    Per wikipedia...The BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) connector is a miniature quick connect/disconnect radio frequency connector used for coaxial cable. It features two bayonet lugs on the female connector; mating is fully achieved with a quarter turn of the coupling nut. BNC connectors are used with miniature-to-subminiature coaxial cable in radio, television, and other radio-frequency electronic equipment, test instruments, and video signals. The BNC was commonly used for early computer networks, including ARCnet, the IBM PC Network, and the 10BASE2 variant of Ethernet. BNC connectors are made to match the characteristic impedance of cable at either 50 ohms or 75 ohms. They are usually applied for frequencies below 4 GHz[1] and voltages below 500 volts.[

    Hey ScannerDanner! Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I have a 96 cherokee similar to the one in this video, but I just had the engine rebuilt and the whole 9, so she runs great. Even though I only work on cars as a hobby and work on computers for a living, I still watched the whole thing because I like how knowledgeable you are. Just got subscribed, and I plan on watching many more of your videos!

    This is so damn good.. what a great case study and brain-storming session! As much as I dreaded going to class, I loved it once I got there.. this is certainly making me want to enroll at the local J.C. to brush-up on the skills again. I have my California enhanced area test/repair smog license. It was a daunting prospect in the beginning, but I quickly fell in love with the advanced level training.

    The major clue here is the shift of timing over separate traces during the seminar, even though timing during each trace seemed to be consistent. Somehow the CMP sensor is able to rock back and forth, giving inconsistent time. I suppose that could happen electronically, too, but more likely it is mechanical.

    The way I learned and remember a 4.0l jeep and many inline 6 cylinder engines firing order is easy to remember, it goes.......to date her is she TOO YOUNG, TOO OLD or JUST RIGHT. TOO YOUNG would be 15. TOO OLD would be 36. JUST RIGHT would be 24. And that is your firing order -->15.36.24

    Hi Paul something that might interest you, measuring very low current with an amps clamp, i saw a clip on it, if you rap the wire round the clamp several times, say 6 it will intensify the magnet field and you should get a reading, the answer you get has to be divided by the number of turns....from Fred in England.

    Great case study. I use a Rigol DS1102E 100MHz Digital Oscilloscope and typically when my leads are too short I take a length of ethernet cable or speaker wire to extend the leads like a long jumper wire. I haven’t seen any signal degradation with this method. Thoughts?

    Here I am 7 years later looking at this video and just for what it's worth I'm guesstimating at this point without doing further diagnosis that it did jump time maybe cruising along tagged the valve that's the way if we have the loss compression or maybe even tag more than one due to a sloppy chain I know it's a Jeep but 40 years ago I was told that on Chrysler that when you have a distributor go in there start to roll the engine over by hand to the distributor moves then start to roll backwards if you have more than 12° variance and the distributor starts to move time for a timing chain

    Keep in mind, this engine has been cranking with fuel pump commanded on when engine sees crank signal. Oil needs to seal the rings on the cylinder wall. Fuel washes oil, if you know there is a lot of fuel in a an engine that has not run, do not automatically assume there is a mechanical problem causing low compression. A skipped timing chain can raise/lower compression however we would see more erratic patterns than just one cylinder. Fuel washout is going to affect the cylinder that is firing the latest or not at all

  • @jeffhival
    @jeffhival 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    When cam and crank waveforms are not in sync the next thing I always do is check cam timing with a pressure transducer. If the cam timing shows good with the pressure transducer then I would be looking at the flywheel or distributor. If the pressure transducer shows a timing misalignment then I would be looking at the front of the motor for a timing chain/ belt issue.

    On this model Jeep I have seen crank sensors installed wrong giving a low amplitude reading and causing a no start. Care must be taken to not remove the felt tip but let it lightly contact the flywheel and to use the semi circle mounting clip to fit the curve of the new sensor when tightening.

I know you're a fan, too, but with so many features and such powerful software and so many possibilities in terms of functions and accessories, Pico makes everything so simple for every user; novice or expert.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you can and yes it is safe. You limitations are with the size of the wire (the jaws must close all the way) and then also, I believe 4v output is the max, so 400 amps (on a 10mv/a scale)

  • @Zahcosta
    @Zahcosta 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good morning. in a twin-cylinder engine, looking at the CKP x primary/secondary of the coil, each cylinder shows a different timing value, each with a different tooth on the ignition pulses, for example: at idle, the ignition firing of cylinder 1 FRONT) appears on the 13th tooth (the TDC mark is on the eighth tooth of the rotor) and the ignition firing of cylinder 2 (REAR) appears on the eighth tooth (the TDC mark for cylinder 2 is on the second tooth of the rotor), with the ignition point of 5° (BTDC) in the workshop manual, what generates this difference in readings on the oscilloscope?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The engine computer or module that's controlling the coils. You're asking an engineer question that is specific to your application

  • @Thunderroad8517
    @Thunderroad8517 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another good video Paul.. Will the pico hook up to any laptop? It is thought provoking ,that you prefer the pico to the verus. The verus is a good tool but really expensive. Does the waveforms on the verus make you guess and scratch your head? I realize that these sound like stupid questions. out the door we are looking at 20+ grand just to stay up to speed on the vehicles coming into the shop. There's no way some of our employers are gonna she'll that much you. Mines fussing about a 300 dollar torch. Just trying to find a way around the cost so I'm not working for Snap-on or Asewave. How are some of you doing it?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Nicholson Yes it will and the software to run the pico is free. You do not need to spend the $10000 on a Verus. There are other paths you can take for sure. Don't get me wrong, I love my Verus too but when I need detail, I'm pulling out the pico

    how does the ecm know where tdc on no1 is... the crank sensor doesnt seem to have an identifiying blip..
    it might work out tdc by using cam and crank signals together... meaning if the dizzy is installed wrongly tdc could be way off..

    • @ScannerDanner

      Distributor engine right?
      It doesn't need to know where #1 is for spark as it is the same coil firing each time.
      So the cam is needed to ID# 1 cylinder for injection control

      ScannerDanner That's what I was thinking. It's a 96 4.0. I replaced the distributor after the old ones gears were eaten away. I got the new one close to being in time, but I still get all cylinders misfiring. I took it to a mechanic. All he did was cut the mount braket off of the distributor so it can be turned in place, and he set it correctly. But now I'm thinking the distributor turns itself out of time due to not having the bracket. Super dumb that he did that in my opinion. Probably need a new distributor now.
