One pin for +12v power from the fuse box Front SAM, one pin for the -12V tigger from ECM and one pin is to cylinder head ground, this is the noise reduction one.

    Around. 14.30 to 15.30 you can see the difference in voltage changes between the feed side and the ground side.:. when current starts to flow through the coil the voltage on the coil's feed side slightly drops, whereas on the ground side voltage slightly rises. Nice!

    Sir Paul, good day and may the god with you and your family. I just want to ask if, we can always use the LED test light on all low current circuits, as long as low current,I mean if we cannot hurt the module rather than using a incandescent test lights,.. specialy on which the driver is inside the computer or modules which is a very low current circuitry?....2nd is.,, the test lamp that good to use for outputs ex.actuators,solenoids,motors etc.....to verify the integrity of circuits and the present of current is incandescent test lamp as a load,and not a LED?

    • @shieldcracker
      @shieldcracker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have it all right. You can safely use the LED test light anywhere, in low and high power circuits because it wont load the device/circuit under test. However its high impedance and rectifying effects limits its usefulness when testing the circuit path integrity.

  • @canadatransistor

    Paul quick question. Are the "transistors" that are built in to the coils true transistors or something like mosfet IBGT in nature? If they are truly transistor based, I think (in theory you could break the circuit to measure base current) and see if the transistor is switching and isn't fried. Mosfets are voltage threshold based (so base current isn't a thing it's zero) and saturates the substrates to low value RDs on (drain to source resistance while on - acting as close as possible to a short circuit). Anyways, I was trying to think about how you demonstrated the test light bulb / led situation and how perhaps these 2 types of semiconductors could throw a monkey wrench in troubleshooting tactics - - or perhaps open a new perspective to interpreting what we see on the scope or what our tools reveal. Great video as always!

    • @ohnoitisnt
      @ohnoitisnt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in this context the transistor terminology/schematic symbol represents a collection of components. I think its an igbt with microcontroller frontend. Just think - if there is a pin which outputs diagnostic information like on the 4 wire coils, youd realise that these coils have a lot of intelligence in them

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First question. Was this an aftermarket coil? Or was it a factory one? Second question or comment, you absolutely need to test the PCMs control of this coil to be sure. Yes, it is possible the PCM driver failed and caused this as well as a wiring problem.

    • @100ega8

    This realization, that you can't get to the coil negative primary wire in a COP system was a forehead slapping moment for me. It didn't really sink in until I tried to find it one day. And I loved your demonstration of how an incandescent light with low resistance can drop voltage enough to almost erase the signal. By the way, is it fair to say that when testing primary voltage on an ignition coil there will never be enough of a voltage spike to justify a 10:1 voltage reducer to protect the scope? Is the voltage spike on the primary side naturally low because of the small number of windings on the primary side? Is it only needed on the secondary, or on injector leads?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the style where you cannot get to coil -, yes, there is never a concern. But on the 2 pin COPs, that would not be true as you can tap into coil - and you'll see upwards of 400+ volt spikes on those. Definitely scope damaging signals for sure.

    Great ending. The real question is why the timing light failed? Was the timing light test gone before and after the ig coil was replaced? I think it is possible that the increased secondary current observed could be related to the cylinder's mixture/and compression curve....

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timing lights are triggered by the high KV, not current, which is super small. Low compression equals low kv to fire the plug. This is why the timing light test failed.

      @juergenscholl2843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ScannerDanner

A lot of your videos about (ICM) and I have tested all the sensors,CKP signa,5 Volt Referenc,Control signal for Ignition ,working perfectly and there is no short circuit, the connection with the ecu is also excellent and no Check Engie on the dashboard , I suspect the protection system turns the car off after a second. My question is about your experience, can the Anti-theft system PassKey III, make the car turn on for a second and turn it off? Note that the lock alert sign disappears when the key is placed in the socket, and there are no error MIL. Sorry for the broken language, I live in Africa where I am thousands of miles away from you and there is no one to help me except for your videos.

      Yes absolutely the antitheft system can do that.

    Hi ScannerDanner , I have subscribed to your channel after search TH-cam for help, and this channel is the best resource going. I been trying to get my Harley going with its ECM system going for weeks, it cranks but no spark, I have fault traced most of the system, and replaced the crank sensor,spark plugs and leads, and new coil.
    These coils has four wires , 12v source, ion sense, ECM front trigger, and ECM rear trigger, but it doesn't have a GND
    I have tested the wiring to the coil with a test light which confirm , I have source, ECM front trigger, and ECM rear trigger both pulses when cranked.
    My digging around on the net has confirmed these coils don't use a negative GND on the secondary and rely on the spark jumping the gap to compete the circuit with the source linked to both primary and secondary of the coil, is this correct the way these three coils work , source, sense, and trigger, do you have a video on fault finding on these type of coils.
    I just watched your bad block GND video, and my next step is going to check voltages, maybe not enough to jump the gap.

      ECM front trigger and ECM rear trigger?? These are goofy names, one of those is definitely a ground and the other is a switched signal from the ECM

    • @swamppifi6186
      @swamppifi6186 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScannerDanner Thanks for the reply, The ECM front, ECM rear are for front & rear cylinders, I have now found out this coil doesn't have the igniter on the coil but built into the ECM, so the ground is from the ECM side. I am now looking at a voltage drop and bad ground as my next possible fault, as the signal for the triggers is flickering very weak when testing with test light to ground, I also brought a USB oscilloscope yesterday. This has been a learning experience trying to fault find.

      Hi scannerDanner I removed the battery box to get access to the block ground underneath, and sure enough the point where the main negative lead from the battery attaches to the motor, there is a voltage drop, the other 4 ground wires attached to the frame was fine. It didn't look badly corroded, but I disassembled and cleaned all the terminals of the ground , it fired straight up. your channel is a great resource , thank you

    Hey, SD, I have a question. After every lesson I generally do my best to apply that what you taught into practice, so I went to my brother in law's Mercedes C200 1.8 and back probed the coils (COP).
    There are three wires, so one power feed and one ground (they share the same wire colours as the rest of the coils) and a control wire. If this helps, they are all the same gauge.
    But when I tap into the control wire, all I am seeing is a secondary ignition waveform. I'm not seeing any sort of pulsing on and off signal.
    Am I doing something wrong here? I mean, it isn't magic, those coils have to know when to turn off and on.
    Is it some sort of power/ground side switching?
    I haven't watched your other lectures on premium about ignition coils, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. I didn't have time yet as I was trying to diagnose a very slight misfire which I think I have. The secondary ignition waveform differs on one coil at the oscillations produced during spark. I compared to the other three and they all have around 4+ ups and downs (coil intermediate section?) This one coil only produces one.
    I can feel I'm on the right track, as this waveform followed the coil but I watched this lecture just to make sure that the wires were showing proper values.
    Thank you!
    Although, if it's something obvious, you can give me a clue, I'll try to figure it out by myself. ;)
    EDIT:
    Although, I've just realised that primary and secondary ignition waveforms are very similar (as per Pico 6 Automotive).
    I'll maybe go and study a bit more... Seems that I've been seeing a primary waveform in the wire this whole time.
    But, where does the control come from?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I have some videos on the Euro design. Essentially the 3-wire coils are 2-wire designs. Coil positive (12v supply) and coil negative is switched directly by the PCM. The extra wire is a ground for the secondary winding. Instead of tying into coil +, they connect it to - (ground). GM HEI coils did it this way to many, many years ago. So what you are seeing is a primary voltage waveform, which mirrors exactly the secondary circuit.

      @Farseer1995 the one in particular I'm thinking of is on a 2016 Mini with a misfire, but that one is on my website.
      I think I have one here on a VW Passat but that was a waste spark coil design (same thing though with the secondary winding being grounded)

      I was watching your three part series about ignition waveforms, and in the meantime stumbled upon this video on YT.
      Once I finish that 3 part I'll look into the videos you've named here, thank you so much.
      I try to go with a certain plan following your chapters, but sometimes I need to skip around and find some random videos depending on the car problem I'm working on. I wasn't planning on doing ignition now, but my brother in law is one of those people that fuses to the car seat and feels every single ripple and he wants that gone.
      All the best!
