    Trinidad is a culture, not a racial group. It is made up of mostly the following groups: African Diaspora , some Europeans, and Native Americans of South American heritage, and with Asian ethnicities, who contributed to your genetic ancestry. But I don't recall a pre-Columbian tribe called Trinidad, maybe Arawak/Carib Natives. Trinidad is a name given by Cristopher Columbus

    • @KymPossible
      @KymPossible  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Angb will you're right there is no tribe called Trinidad but I was more so referring to either the Caribs or Arawaks, either way, I'm something! But it's only less than 1% so I won't dwell on it too hard.

      The majority population in Trinidad is actually South Asian, then African is a close second.

      How do you know the slaves came from Africa? At that time most native Americans were also black and the Europeans had been exporting them as slaves since 1492. Expensive tests that claim to trace a person’s ancestry from a DNA sample are no more than ‘genetic astrology’, scientists say. The raw data only suggests similarities, not actual percentages. It is no different than looking at someone and saying they look a little like someone else. Your DNA information is much more useful to the drug companies that buy it than it is to you. You can't read off your identity from your genetic code.
      The more markers you share in common, the more likely you are to be related. The probable relationship between any two people is calculated based on the percentage of markers they have in common. But there are problems with tests of this kind. First, there is no complete database of the world's DNA. Data have been collected for different purposes, and different companies have access to different databases. Second, even if, in the ideal case, we find meaningful clusters of similarity in the space of genetic variation, there is no reason to think that these will map onto ethnicity or other categories in terms of which we understand our own identity.
      It’s all a numbers game based on one fundamental assumption: that people who live in an area today (say, modern Englishmen and -women) and who have all four of their grandparents born in that area are typical of the genetic signature of that population generations ago.
      When AncestryDNA estimates that I have 31% Scandinavian ancestry, it does so based on the results of testing samples from 272 people who were born in Scandinavia and whose grandparents were also born there. Skeletal remains are even more problematic. Because you are dealing with even less information from a basically unknown source.
      General information is being presented as personal, and claims someone is related to a famous figure such as Cleopatra are often no less likely to be true for a random passer-by than for the subject of the test. Our most recent common ancestor dates back just 3,500 years, meaning many of us will find the same colorful characters in our past. The DNA tests used today were designed to look at a whole population, not individuals. This means results are vague at best and more often than not, just plain wrong.

    I'm Trinidadian and I did the test with a different company. I was very surprised to have Scandinavian just as you. I have no clue how that happens because history classes in Trinidad never mentioned Scandinavian migrating to Trinidad so maybe we're just part of a group that had Scandinavian. Trinidad's history is very diverse so I shouldn't be a surprise to have a little of everything. My results were 73% African, 11% south Central Asia (Indian), 7% European with DNA from the British isles and Scandinavian, the rest of my DNA had trace regions from South America and North American natives, Polynesia /Oceania, Middle East and south Eastern Europe. +LePoissondAvril94 @LePoissondAvril94

    • @001islandprincess
      @001islandprincess 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jamille St.Hilaire The Scandinavian DNA results is most likely from the English/British as some English people from various part of England have Norwegian ancestry. Your results does not actually mean there were Scandinavian people in Trinidad or any other part of the Caribbean. I'm Canadian born to Jamaican parents and my mother and I have English and Norwegian DNA. Obviously the English is not surprising and looking at my chromosomes and who I match, it is correct. Interestingly enough my Sicilian DNA percentage is more than my english courtesy of my mother's grandmother. Bottom line is that you have to have a greater understanding of the people who colonized the Americas and their mixed ancestry to understand your DNA results.

      Scottish who fought on the wrong side and were put into penal indenture probably. There were several Viking villages that over time assimilated into the clan system.
      Political prisoners were indentured for life to hard labour but most didn't live very long. They were not to be trusted because like the Irish they tried to start rebellions.

    All you Trinidadian who are amazed and surprised to have Scandinavian DNA. No, there was not Scandinavian migration to Trinidad but there was a massive Scandinavian invasion of Britain after the Romans were gone in the 8th century. So your Scandinavian DNA comes to you via Great Britain and the colonial masters. Same thing goes for 99% of African Americans.Blacks in South America have a lot of Iberian( Spanish and Portuguese) DNA for the same reason . And I bet you that there are a lot of Iberian DNA in Trinidad too. And degrees of variations to that effect all over the Americas

    just a note on the "native american". most islands of the caribbean were populated by the Taino and Kalinago groups, who migrated out of the Orinoco region in Venezuela. Migration patterns for the americas show the movement of peoples from north America through central and into south American continent.
    While most Taino and Kalinago disappeared due to genocide, some peoples of the Caribbean still have small traces of DNA (of course there are still some indigenous groups such as in Dominica)

    I did both MyHeritage and Ancestry and I think its weird that Ancestry has no Kenya ethnicity ever listed for anybody or North Africa when I look through all my relatives charts but MyHeritage gave me 8.7% Kenya and 4% North Africa but ancestry didn't show either one of those at all. Plus they gave me South African countries that MyHeritage never did. Every other country pretty much the same but more detail about how many and actually which ones. Myheritage just clumped all my European countries together into 31% Scottish Wales and Ireland. And 1.6% Balkan. 1% South Asia. But Ancestry shows every single European country 18% England 5% Scotland Ireland Germany Norway Sweden Denmark. So I think its just whether or not that company has even tested enough people in that location or not. More than what you actually are. Like they say for entertainment purposes only

      Becky Eckert - if you are interested in doing this yourself, google it like I did. You can not win a comment section argument. TH-cam ghosts me when I post too many links. If you want to discuss specific aspects of ancestry testing I'd love to. I didn't say it was false. It just isn't what you think it is.
      DNA sequencing is real and it can be useful. The math involved in ancestry testing is also real. It's the advertising that's false. At least in so far as what it implies.

      The math used and the test population are what make the results change. Not the minor changes in a person's DNA sequence over time.

      Becky Eckert1 - As far as your journey into your family lineage, I have heard it's possible to find actual living long lost cousins if they happen to be in the same database used by the company you choose.
      It may be fun to look at those percentages they give you but that part should be taken with a very large grain of salt. It is not really science and can not take the place of an oral history. Like in America when your mother tells you your grandma was native American. You can't say she's wrong based on an ancestry test. In most cases, it is certainly the other way around. Now there were what's called $5 Indians but that's a whole different scenario. Those were whites who claimed to be Indian in order to get 150 acres of land. Real Indians were often penalized for admitting their heritage.
      You can prove someone is not your parent with a DNA test but these ancestry tests do not prove anything. Many people don't realize this and that is why I've taken the time to post a comment here.

    • @rawmilkmike
      @rawmilkmike 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Becky Eckert1 - Thanks for the thoughtful conversation. "When referencing the slave trade we commonly envision domestic purchases and exchanges of plantation owners and traders culminating in the overland transporting of slaves. Shipping human cargo via coastal waterways from one region to another is often forgotten history. It is estimated that over 1 million slaves were transported using either coastwise ships to the southern ports along the Atlantic, or channeling them along the southern coast and the Mississippi River using southern tributaries."
      What registry? You are not going to find most native Americans is any registry and if you do that doesn't prove they were Indians. Google the $5 Indian. Most black people were all told the same thing by whom? Maybe most black people were all told the same thing because they are native American. Who's more likely to be the liar here? If you are a true skeptic don't put any stock in the ancestry percentages you get from any ancestry DNA company. They prove nothing. The number of Native people who have tested remains small. If your tribe is not in one of their databases all their ancestry percentages become meaningless right from the get go. I've heard “None of the 567 federally recognized tribes have endorsed or participated in DNA testing.” If that isn't true please let me know.

    • @joolscezar
      @joolscezar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Durae Duncan of course they are Native American. They emigrated from North America, some settled in Yucatán, others continued down the Central American Isthmus, while others moved further South. The Caribs supposedly were pursuing the Arawaks, who were farmers etc. The two tribes were found in Trinidad. And these indigenous tribes in Trinidad mixed with other ethnic groups over the years... so chances are that many Trinis have Native American DNA

    Yes the native American part is either carib arawak or taino from the Caribbean or South American native tribes. Your north Africa which is amazigh is was brought over by your iberian ancestry due to barbary slave trade off the iberians peninsualar, all iberians will have north African DNA and all north Africans/amazigh will have South European DNA too.
