Ford Transit Custom ignition lock fault

- We made this video, because over the last 4 months, we've been out to as many Ford Custom vans that have jammed ignition locks. The vans we have fixed have all been 2013-2015 and both key and lock have worn out. We think this will be a major problem over the next 2-3 years and we wanted to show you how we deal with the problem.
If you have a Ford Custom or Ford Transit and the key is getting difficult to turn, get it sorted out soon, before the small irritation becomes a major problem.

Oh no! It's important you get this sorted while you can still turn the lock. Ask your local garage if they have a good local key man and I'm sure they'll be able to put a lock in no problem
Stupid question,but where do you obtain the key code please?
Hi David, well some Ford dealers keep the codes, but it is only by the selling dealer, and it relies on the individual sales person to do this. Other brands such as Vauxhall and Citroen have a national database, but not Ford.
You need an Autolocksmith to work out the code for you

Or if you’re desperate, leave the barrel pin /pins that are high remove them from the barrel? Or file the profile down on the pins so they are flush with the barrel? Downside of removing one or two pins, what does that mean in respect of how many other Ford keys would fit?
Ah, you’d need to be a good mathematician to work that out!
I wish you'd shown how to remove the barrel, its driving me insane 😫
Hi, does the lock turn?
I'm the same mate, I just need to know how to get the actual barrel out of a MK8 transit . There is a key blade snapped off in side and it doesn't turn . I have a new barrel and keys that I can do nothing so I'm just sat watching 10 grands worth of van gathering dust and not earning any money. The quote the lock smith gave me was a joke and he refused to tell me how to get the barrel out, that is all I want !!
@@Lazerusman1 I worked it out in the end, there's 2 small holes underneath, you need to turn the key to position 1 and push a small pick up into one of the holes and it releases it and you can pull it out.

@@ELL23OPC sorry for late reply. Can you share the pics? I have to do this and the barrel is frozen. I may need to drill it out in that location your describing in order to remove it
I’m working on a 2018 transit and it’s a nightmare. No accessible ejection port to remove the ignition. I am going to have to remove the shear bolts and remove the entire ignition switch module. Spent 6 hours trying to find a port for ejection, and steering wheel is locked and key is jammed.
Hi, the lock needs to be turned to remove it. Can you turn the lock?
@@TheCarKeyMan I was able to remove it. I had to force it over with key and vice grips. I also did see a tiny hole in switch assembly. 2018 ford transit 350 XLT
@@TheCarKeyMan no key was completely jammed so it would not turn. Even made a fresh cut key. Weird thing tho, I did get it removed by force turning, but now the cylinder works as should, I put new one in as I’m using old one to gut it and try to figure out how to rekey it. Seems like it turns smooth now and locks when it should…I will be taking it apart tonight. I had to remove the whole ignition switch to release it, but I think I didn’t have to do all that work

this is the issue I have today. 2014 custom and today the key got stuck and no ignition. Stupid of me to ask this I know, but are Ford not liable for this given how essential and hard-wearing this part should be?. I had a year 2000 mk6 before the custom and in the 11 years I owned it there was never a key issue.
HI Chris, it's not a stupid question. In the last 4 weeks we've seen a 2015 Fiat Ducato, a 2016 VW Transporter, numerous Citroen and Peugeot vans with worn out ignition locks, ad of course a selection of Ford Transit and Custom vans from 2014 onwards.
It's all made of cheese, nothing lasts now and owners are getting stranded because it's all so cheap and nasty. OK rant over.
I don't expect you'll get it sorted under warranty. To Ford, a 2014 van is ancient. Try and find a decent Auto Locksmith to sort it for you, and yes the old stuff was so much better.
@@TheCarKeyMan I got a new barrel for £50 through a mate in the car business and them a auto locksmith made it up and fitted for £80 today first thing.

Its because things are made of a new material called Chinesium...... It's like metal but worse.......

Ok, we've seen this before. The one we saw, the ignition was ruined. The good news is that the remove the it ignition it has to turn to the first position. That means it can be removed, and replaced.
