- Just a few weeks before the unveiling of the finished Zoidberg Project costume, effects artist Frank Ippolito begins painting Zoidberg's foam latex mask to bring him to life. Watch as Frank explains his airbrush technique and how he approaches the painting process.

Frank talking about his "pretty big" air compressor reminded me of a time we were looking for a big (about 50 gal) sonic cleaner. At first we looked at jewelry industry suppliers. One of them said they had some "very big" ones. When asked how big was "very big," they replied "All the way up to a full gallon." I guess perception of size varies according to purpose.

for a portable and "compact" compressor, it is big. and i do have a big floor model in my shop as well. sorry for the confusion.
i love Zoidberg so much, it's one of my favourite characters ever.

Those gloves he was wearing looked perfect, like they were made out of a cast of his hands, they probably were. I want some white gloves like that for costumes

For some reason i find this vid extremely fascinating
I know, I normally have videos like this playing on my second screen while I play videogames. But when it started showing the air brushing I just sat back, spun my chair a little to the side, and watched the last ten minutes. This stuff is just so cool.

It's amazing. Just a hard critique here, I don't feel it's shiny or red enough for a lobster carapace type shell.
Zoidberg is one of my favority characters. It's really good, the color is not yet ok, as he said "to much red", but man, really good job!

zoidbergs shell covers his head, it cracks on occasion and when he takes off his shell his head is also a shell,
but he's a Jewish space lobster so eh, lot's of questions remain, go nuts with the details.

You can paint water based paint over an oil base? In traditional painting the water based paint will eventually delaminate from the oil.

Doesn't water based paint over oil based paint cause problems? Or does the cement base help with that?
Hey sry if this is an old question being rehashed. I'm canadian and VM&P naptha isn't sold here (at least where I live). I can get a container on amazon.ca for around 90 dollars CDN, haven't checked if that's with shipping or not what does it cost on average in USD? I don't mind paying the mark up as long as I'm not getting overcharged. I've been looking around and people say Coleman Camping Fuel is an okay substitution. What's your thoughts on this? I'm thinking it would be harsher fumes and needs a resperator more. As well as maybe a lingering aroma in your finished product unless sealed and maybe the chance of poisoning a child through prolonged contact over time. I only ask cause I've recently used some odorless lighter fluid to thin silicone caulking to make realistic water (the effect worked out okay, but i got some paint on it later lol will have to redo).
I guess my question is, the lighter fluid itself says its poisonous. This I assume is if ingested since that's all the warnings say to deal with not contact. What about cross contamination from fingers to mouth?

does mixing rubber cement help allow the paint to be more flexible and/or adhere to a rubbery material like silicone and soft vinyl?

What size compressor do you recommend or what PSI do you spray thinned silicone? I don't want to buy too small of a compressor.

I think the inside of the eye should be black. No need for a screen. Think of an actual eye. There's a bloody red retina in the back, but you can't see it through the pupil. All you see is black. If the inside of the eyes are painted black, from nearly all angles, it'll probably look pretty natural.
By screen I think he means a piece of black material that the wearer of the costume can see out of but to everyone else will look black.
