    Rick Baker was in my high school art class for one semester. He was waaay beyond the rest of us. I never forgot him, so when I saw an American Werewolf and saw his name in the credits, I was thrilled. Ever since then I've enjoyed following his career. Good on you, Rick!

    With everything going to CGI..Rick and others like him are a dying breed.

      TheDeadlyNeck 76 This is nonsense. It take just as much artistic ability to use something like zbrush, as it does to do it traditionally. Rick Bake himself uses zbrush and modo professionally and loves it. He has never said its any easier to do it digitally! And that's coming from the man himself!!.

    • @Bolthrower91
      @Bolthrower91 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I totally agree CGI has made a huge contribution to the industry but Rick himself has said that what really impacted him was the production studios wanting him to go do everything fast and cheap, which is not the way he does things. Fortunately Disney studios and AMC are making a real push toward more practical special effects look at the new Star Wars movies and Walking Dead, really cool stuff.

    • @rokaanalzeer
      @rokaanalzeer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No in fairness, it’s easier to tell when someone is in makeup vs cgi. I’m always a fan of combining both. I think you need cgi to make the face more expressive since the makeup limits what you can express but also use actual makeup for actors to react to.

  • @RoarOfWolverine
    @RoarOfWolverine ปีที่แล้ว

    I was a makeup artist in TV and film for nearly 20 years and Baker was always my idol. As brilliant as Winston and Bottin and many others are, Baker was in a league of his own. His stuff always looked so much more lifelike than any others. I worked with him on the movie Matinee back in the 1990s and was sent his molds from the An American Werewolf In London transitional stages to cast the silicone pieces that were used in the Phantom Of The Opera Makeup Show at Universal Park in Orlando.
    The show had three different stages of the wolf heads and each one would stretch a certain amount by a pneumatic cylinder. The detail in those molds was amazing and the pieces came out looking fabulous. Then I poked in the hairs one at a time using Yak’s hair and it looked exactly like the heads in the movie. They looked so alive, but that’s because they were actually Rick’s sculptures.
    I agree with Rick that other than him and maybe Dick Smith, Lon Chaney Sr.’s is the greatest of all, especially when you condenser the very primitive materials he had to work with. No foam latex, no silicone or any other modern materials or adhesives. Chaney built a lot of his prosthetics from collodion, spirit gum and cotton, yet most of it holds up today. The Phantom Of the Opera makeup is still one of the greatest film monsters of all time.
    That face scared the shit out of me as a kid, but also intrigued me and ultimately led to me doing that for a living. I would ultimately move to doing animatronics for WDI (Walt Disney Imagineering) which was more stable work. Now, I do computer animation and I think all of the years of practical experience really gave me a different feel for the animation rather than the young people who have never made anything outside of a computer.

    Amazing that he opened up his skills and experience. That's how we learn from sharing from one another.

    Just imagine being in that warehouse late at night with all the lights off with only a flash light, that would scare the crap out of me! Amazing collection, too bad he can't start a museum, but they will live on in our memories:)
