    Time for another prop-making tutorial with effects artist Frank Ippolito! This week, we stop by Frank's shop to learn how to transform a cheap plastic skull into a gory horror prop using simple materials. By layering and sculpting cotton and latex, we can simulate gross charred flesh on the skull or any other body part. It's very effective!

      There's not a char to the skin or does the skin just completely melt off by the time someone dies in a fire? There aren't charred bits left?

      It is hard to quantify the time it takes to dry because it's based on how thick the latex is applied. The thinner it is the quicker it will dry and vice versa.

    One thing that you could also do is before you apply the black coat do a spray over with clear spray resin which will give the flesh a wet look and help pop the color more then when you apply the black for the chard burnt look it gives it a bit of a juxtaposition of wet underline flesh with dry chard flesh. Great tutorial and thx.

    A good trick that we do in makeup is to add colors in the latex itself. Food color works well and what you get are layers of color that are semi transparent so it is deep layerd.

    Glad Frank mentioned using tissue paper. I always go with a combo of tissue & cotton to get that perfect separation between skin/random flesh & muscle. I also like to use cut up paper plates or thin poster board for skull fractures. For an extra fun twist fill said fracture with dyed oatmeal smothered in corn syrup & randomly pick it off your head & eat it in front of people. For edible wet ends on torn limbs, I recommend a combo of the same trick with the addition of Fruit by the Foot or other fruit wrap candy sheets. Horrifyingly ugly, deliciously sweet.

      Keep trespassers off your property. Out of sight of the road and other neighbours etc place skull in areas like compost heaps, below the fence (where thieves might climb over!)
      Place bullet holes and crossbow bolts for added effect! Occasionally add rotting pet food etc when available (if you are far enough away from neighbours)
      Might be advisable to inform the local cops what your new property protection scheme entails- so you don't get bluelight alarm calls at 3am in the Morning from your local S.W.A.T or AOS unit intent on finally finding the local serial killer!

    a cheaper latex for a lower budget is Elmer's glue. works about the same. just have a hairdryer or a heat gun. if you push the heat gun real close to the glue it will bubble up and give you a nice burn-looking thing.

    • @sharonwilbourne7256
      @sharonwilbourne7256 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using the standard type or regular Elmer's Glue you would need to keep the skull from getting wet. Regular Elmer's Glue is water soluble. Instead make sure to use Elmer's Glue All because it has components in it similar to latex which makes it impervious to water. By using the standard or regular Elmer's Glue as the sticking component, if it gets wet it might run or melt off unless it is completely sealed.

    Great video! Seems like something even I could do! Love how Norm keeps "regrounding" the artsy dialogue to maintain the sequence of steps. As a newbie (and this tutorial seems geared to newbies given the easy techniques and common materials), I find pros can busily work on a project and forget to talk about it, or talk in very vague terms.... They're almost *too* familiar with it. Thanks Norm!!

    Thanks for this awesome video! I am actually redoing this right now, with a 12Euro Resin Skull from China, some Cotton and Latex. As an Archaeologist I am pretty fascinated with prehistoric preservation techniques of corpses, like different methods of mummification, but also recent forms of ritural modification of human remains... well... and I admit that I am just one of this weird people who have always had an obsession with all kind of morbid stuff. I am just creating my first "Mummy-Skull", for my kind of "19th Century-Stile Cabinet" at home, and it comes really handy, that I am having a seminar right now at an Institute for Forensic Medicine.

    I positively adore this tutorial but for one thing -- Chan. He's kinda annoying and in the way during this tutorial. I recognize the fact he's there to ask questions that we, the audience, would wish to know and to facilitate continued interest. Usually I dig his "twerpy younger brother" vibe, as I think it's kinda charming. This time, however? Mebbe in a different video have him actually build his own beginner [version of what's being done] alongside the actual artiste?
    Anyway, thank you again for such a great video treat!

      I like the build his own skull idea. It would be interesting to watch both take shape at the same time. Also he would ask questions differently because he would see the situation in a hands on action way. ..... I would have added a light dry brush with red at the end around the Frontal and Temporal lobes for a more realistic look.

    • @RaeCarson
      @RaeCarson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Asha Wheeler I would've added just 2-3 washes of yellow, probably between the brown and red washes to give it more depth. I also would like to do the final touches like you suggested -- only with paints with a higher gloss finish to give it that "fresher" essence that Frank mentioned. :)

    Too much black on the end process. You had it perfect until you "rubbed" the black all over. The black should have been applied sparingly on the outside fringes (showing red underneath), just like real burned flesh would appear. Other than that, great job!

    Honestly I've come back to this Video and all the hate on Norm is uncalled for and wrong. One comment said he should kill himself. I don't care if you say it's a joke, that's not ok. Norm is a good guy and if you find him annoying then ok. But there's no need to go around telling the person off. We don't need more hate. If you don't like someone that's fine. But don't just go saying these things. It really is harmful.

      Norm asks questions and gets the makers to add details. He points out things like if your doing a smaller scale project you don't need the high quantities of supplies the makers buy. Also he gets details that makers take for granted.

      That means he's doing his job. I don't think his background is entertainment, he approaches videos more like a journalist and comes prepped with questions and is constantly asking questions for the purpose of helping the audience understand what's going on.
      He can only pay attention so much to what's happening -- he does have to make a video too. It's not as easy as we think.

    • @donovangilbert7180
      @donovangilbert7180 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      He's just asking questions to make it obvious for the audience to know what Frank is doing, and what his technique is. He's basically conducting an interview, and that's his job. To ask questions, and to try and make certain things obvious

    • @TomWDW1
      @TomWDW1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He's fine ... but in reality, he has little chemistry with the people he interviews/works with. He is not a natural on-camera guy.

    • @jaybrewster2475
      @jaybrewster2475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're just so horribly awkward and socially inept that you find an actual human interaction painful. Even if it's just observing the interactions between others. You project these feelings on to norm.
