Watch me react to Everything Wrong With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Nebula! nebula.tv/videos/cinemawins-cinemawins-reacts-to-cinemasins-eww-kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes
You know, in case you’re doing Back to the Future movies for its 40th anniversary next year, I could send you a few notes on Patreon in case you’re interested.
CinemaSins are so unreliable and biased and they’re doing senseless and irrational reviews on well-received and positively reviewed films (Especially 20th century studios film adaptation franchise of Pierre Boulle’s Planet of the Apes instead of one film of the series that is awful itself from 2001 directed by Tim Burton and is the only bad movie of the beloved ip to date) because the franchise much like the 1963 book of the same name is so dang popular.
Fun fact: apparently Caesar's face looked different in the opening of this from how it looked in the prior trilogy - potentially to avoid paying Andy Serkis for likeness residuals. However, it could also be seen as a sign that, shortly after his death, Caesar is ALREADY being misinterpreted from the ape he truly was.
What I love about Raka's (hopefully not) last words of "Together strong" weren't just for apes. I feel a big part of this trilogy will be humans and apes having to learn to coexist for both species to survive.
No body no death. Even if they planned for him to die there, he’s become too much of a fan favorite. It’s possibly they’ll bring him back. At least I’m hoping. We just did not get enough of his character
This was a pretty good movie. I don’t think it tops War for Planet of the Apes but that movie had a completely different tone. So glad they added Ceaser’s funeral in the beginning.

Reminds me of a debate I had with a friend over this movie, he viewed Mae as a straight up hero fighting for her people who's actions are justified, where as I viewed as a straight up villain who wants the apes extinct. We came to a truce of "Agree to disagree until a new movie is unleashed... if one is ever unleashed."
@@JwsponkyI thought of Mae as an agent on a mission (exactly what she was). Agents always operate in the grey area (unless their orders are completely evil of course). I agreed with everything Mae did, even the blowing the dam and endangering the lives of every one (warlord age getting that bunker would have been horrific for even other apes).
@@pmpowalisz A fair interpretation, I do admit to giving Proximus something of the benefit of the doubt as most of the atrocities committed are done by his subordinates who could be... loosely, interpreting orders, not by himself. At the very least he seems a better boss to be under than Koba.
@ yes Koba was worse, but at least Koba had the excuse of being horribly mistreated by humans. Proximus was clearly just power hungry, and his vision would have just led ape kind to make the same mistakes humanity did.

oh my goodness, the scene towards the end when you can see the blood dripping out of Noa's mouth/staining his teeth when he's getting beat by Proximus-- I swear I've never seen CGI look more real. Literally made my jaw drop
One thing I love about the scene when Mae speaks for the first time is that it also mirrors when Caesar speaks for the first time, it even sounds like she’s saying “No” the same way he did, but she’s saying “Noah.” Wonderful parallel and reversal.
I think it's an awesome detail that most apes have completely forgotten their society's ancient history and the few that haven't are either missing the finer details or have completely twisted it to suit their own agenda. It makes total sense for a society where it's main tool of preserving history would realistically be by word of mouth

Mae really has a lot of potential in this new trilogy. I love the grey morality presented with her. She clearly cares enough about Noa to ask him cute personal questions (like his crush on Soona) and say goodbye at the end. But she’s also so bought into whatever propaganda she was fed by humans that she can’t break away from it easily. So it’s up in the air what will become of her and Noa and I think that’s a really fascinating hook for this series.
If they choose to go with that angle, I think it does her storyline a great disservice. It removes the grey. Her actions and attitudes do not require some xenophobic propaganda. She's truly on a mission to save her people. She is their last hope, as everyone else in her party has already been slaughtered. That is a lot of responsibility, legitimate responsibility that does not require brainwashing to be felt.
@@KarbinCry It’s not xenophobic propaganda she was fed. It’s the propaganda that apes aren’t really meant to have what belongs to humans. She says at the end she doesn’t know what should be given to apes because nobody ever really told her what the endgame was of re-establishing human contact.
Having the marketing mislead that Noa and Mae would be friends was one of the smartest choices. Much like the OG trilogy marketing you expect one type of story but then get something much more layered, nuanced, and not so straight forwards. Having a new human ally essentially also a villain, the heroic ape not trust humans, that was a ballsy move and I'm so glad it paid off.
Part of what makes these films compelling is (especially in Rise and this one) the humans and good guy apes both have a solid point. In rise the humans are just trying to survive the horrid experiences they have had. There is fear and mistrust but it is possible to overcome it. The Apes are also trying to build a life for themselves and for the most part are happy. In This film Mae is a schemer, dishonest and is constantly shifty in her motives. She is also a line young woman on a mission that is functionally trying to save what is left of her species. And the film shows many times she is physically a lot weaker than any ape she encounters. The fact is this conflict (Noa vs Mae) does not have a bad guy in a good way. Each side favours their own interests and goals. It bodes well for interesting character arcs down the road. Possibly giving us the first film with a returning human character.
Also that kind of disturbing parallel of how Proximus's army wields electric prods as weapons, like Dodge in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". A symbol of oppression, almost, but now wielded by fellow apes.
I feel like something not a lot of people know that makes the water scenes so much more terrifying is that apes don't float. Their body fat percentage is too low so they just sink unlike humans. So any time you see an ape go under water during that flood, they drowned.
I also appreciate the level of force they show the water having. Similar to the saying about tornadoes, it's not just that the water is moving, it's what the water is moving.
The most powerful reveal to me was when Mae handed off the component to someone with a hazmat suit, and then walked away. She can never go home again. Every decision of hers was made with the knowledge that she could never go home again.
Im surprised you didnt mention the clear Old Testament inspirations for this movie. The main character is named Noa(h), hes gifted knowledge with how to make things, theres a flood that comes in to destroy the remnants of the old world that he saves his people from. Only thing missing was a boat and a rainbow.
I think Trevathan saw Noa as threat to his self preservation after he learned that the ape was able to repair one of his taser staffs which is why he said “He’s gonna skin your monkey alive…” showing some contempt to the one who can threaten his “good life”.
Another one I caught is during the rapids scene Raka says to Noa "together strong" leaving "apes" out of the quote because he doesn't want to exclude humans.
The more you think about the more it looks like Proximus tried to recreate Ceaser's OG Squad, A huge strong Gorrila for Buck/Luca, and a forgettable hairless chimp for Rocket I think he tried to get Rakka and his buddy for wise old Maurice but when they refused Proximus had them killed 😢
@@jacobcox4565 I was talking about real chimps age of development. I am pretty sure for movies they would not follow this but It is kind of funny to think about it. Chimps reach aduldhood at 10 years old aprox. So Mae is like.....20 years old? xD She was traveling with a 10 years old and... Raka could be 20s too.. They may have the same age...sooo wear if you keep it accurative.
I gotta say man, your videos always brighten my mood - not just towards films (like this one) that I already thoroughly enjoyed, but also towards films I didn't enjoy as much. Your perspective, appreciation, and excitement for things (particularly things I didn't notice) is infectiously satisfying and improve my overall opinion of a given movie. But I do also mean your videos literally brighten my overall mood of the day because they are so positive and supportive of a thing you enjoy even while acknowledging flaws without faulting them too much. thanks for doing what you do.
Erik Winquist, VFX supervisor, actually stated there are no bonobos and Proximus is actually a just a giant, dark skinned chimp and Eshan Bigloo who designed Proximus posted concept art with him appearing to be a chimp from the very beginning.
These Ape movies, Kingdom and Dawn especially, are so incredible to watch! These movies are the only ones that rival the Avatar movies in terms of showcasing visual effects and performance capture.
Author's Saving Throw (from TV Tropes): For people who didn't like the Mythology Gag of having a mute human female named "Nova" in War for the Planet of the Apes, just 15 years after the downfall of humanity (Planet of the Apes (1968) took place after two thousand years): this film reveals that “Nova" has become a generic ape name for female humans after a few centuries and they will presumably continue to use it as such in the future.
I think it's still on the 'War' page saying 'no one expected Nova to return for War' when it's clearly not the same character and even then it was mainly a callback/reference.
I just realised that Proximus was searching to steal knowledge from "superior" beings and got killed by eagles on a rock. Dude is an evil Prometheus, seeking knowledge only for himself while Prometheus wanted it for others.
One thing the ending of this film implicates to me - the trilogy' Simian flu understandably led everyone to assume that _Rise_ onwards was a full-on continuity reboot of the franchise. But then this film concludes with the reactivation of a satellite network, and sapient humans active in bunkers. Who's to say the nukes still can't be activated? What we thought was a reboot might actually be a stealth prequel to the original movie... On a lighter note, please do an EGA about Red vs. Blue: Restoration, in light of the upcoming Blu-Ray release; that or some other Rooster Teeth property.
I loved this movie one reason specifically for having stakes but at the end, none of the main characters loved ones died on the climax, it was surprisingly refreshing and wholesome! And villains claiming Caesar's name is such a "how dare you say his name/use it like that!" 😂
I really enjoyed this movie. A lot more than I expected, I was a little cautious with the trailer as something seemed off. But, I was very happy to be proven wrong. Thought this was very comfortably in the same league as the trilogy.
I absolutely LOVE the new POTA trilogy, and loved this film as well. I can't wait to see where they go with this. I think Dawn is still probably my favorite. But this may be 2nd, or 3rd behind War.
Also they are lead by those female apes who are not the strongest or tallest in the group but those who are best at estbalishing connections with other female apes/ best social net work.
The visualization of the overgrown cities in this film and the detail in their individual buildings when the trio is doing their initial climb for the eggs gives me real hope for a good (at least visually) live action Horizon: Zero Dawn movie.
15:58 okay thank you for saying this because I also kept thinking that Noa was a “handsome” ape but I felt so weird for thinking that, I know I’m actually thinking the human face underneath is attractive but still
This movie was a great experience in imax, and the CGI realism was absolutely insane besides some of the weird fish-lense action scenes. It's great that they released a movie cut where the mocap-guys haven't been replaced by the apes. Very respectful.
20:02 Noa didn't see a planet. If I'm not mistaken he told Raka he saw a "tunnel that eats light." So a black hole maybe? A wormhole for some astronauts to whoopsie into?
I thinkn proximus is the only living type of ape where his rib cages and hips are connected, so that's why he walks straighter and taller than everyone around him - pretty sure Durand said that in an interview.
I like to think Anthropologist would love some of this movie. Its very VERY close to early human cultures. The old is created but it branches out and soon the new cultures it spawns forget where they came from. Put all of human history into perspective and you see that it all happens pretty quickly. Without the written word and long range communication it takes like 10 generations to forget. Which makes it boht funny and a little depressing when you realize these apes havent left the West Coast of the USA AT ALL in all those generations.
I noticed on my second viewing that Noa at 12:04 says you were "not true" it seems like his clan doesn't even have the word "lie" in its vocabulary. I like that little world building.
15:51 People have said that about Transformers One. Trailers highlight the comedy and action while the nuance and drama is skirted over Gonna b seeing it later today since it finally released in the UK
I think another thing that’s interesting is the way Mae says Noa’s name at 11:28, it sounds like “No!” which creates a moment where both species “first words” being no. Ceasar in Rise, and Mae in Kingdom. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I thought it was a cool connection!
Wasn't brought up but another great detail is that after she shoots Lightning dead, Proximus asks if there are more weapons like that inside with a bewildered almost joy-like look on his face. Really showing how he's excited for the destructive power our technology will bring him more than the safety of his people.
Something not mentioned: Historically, the Romans had the habit of conquering surrounding tribes (shocker, I know) and then suppressing their culture, so that within decades, while not being Romans themselves, their culture definitely was and they could be relied on being loyal to their rulers. One of the first things you notice is how distinct the culture of the Eagle clan is, and how they are all about symbiosis with their birds. After being captured, this part is actively suppressed, as Proximus, the new Caesar, has no need for eagles, he needs slaves to work on the door. And in the end, it turns out that Noah was able to hold on to his culture and with the help of his clans eagles kills the Roman Empire Larper.
I like to think that there's some Prometheus style parallels you can make with Proximus' death. Being pecked to death by birds and casted into the depth for trying to give his people knowledge, or in his case opening the vault
the part that is painfully real, is that proximus will be the one remembered, despite the fact that it was always caesar who said "APES TOGETHER STRONG"
I went into this film not expecting much especially after such an amazing ending of the original Serkis trilogy but I honestly think they’ve done an incredible job with this film ❤ it feels like a completely new journey and not just a rehash of Rise, dawn and war.
i liked the movie. i thought it was great 'new trilogy' being the descendents of the original trilogy and not understanding the lessons the original movies tried to tell us about war. and about trying to get back to what they considered the "norm" (the humans trying to be the dominant species again) but also showing the apes are just as known to be as corrupt as the humans they hate.
When you said you wished more of Kevin Durand's face came through from the motion capture, I was unfamiliar with the name so I looked up "Kevin Durant" I was like oh cool they got an athlete to play a role in this movie. I was so confused when I couldn't find any other information about his role or link to the movie. Now I know about two new Kevin's :)
I've never seen anybody mention the scar Noa gets from the cattle prod is almost exactly like Caesar's birthmark. Which is never commented on but, I'm pretty sure, intentional
I would be fascinated to see a cut of the movie from Mae’s perspective. A version with her framed as protagonist would be an interesting contrast in how stories can appear.
Just came back to this video after rewatching your videos on the series to officially announce I now have Nebula!!! Granted I’m also excited to watch new videos from new people I haven’t known before as there seems to be a lot of good content on the site! But very excited and just wanted a place to celebrate it!! (As well as the fact as I had just gotten done rewatching this video of yours too, which helped make the decision to subscribe to Nebula!)
I appreciate how competitively low stakes the movie is (just a single clan vs another clan mostly, not the fate of the world) and I kinda hope every movie after this one jumps a few generations each time to explore more personal stories in this timeline.
I find it interesting that the film uses so much of its dystopian post apocalyptic setting to make humanity seem like a lost civilization that had wonders and were incredibly advanced. It both adds to the mystique of the setting while also twisting the knife that human "advancement" led to them destroying themselves and leaving echoes of their former selves behind. And even more it pushes that maybe things can still be reclaimed and made better. Especially because humans are technically also apes, and apes together strong
I don't blame Mae at all for her decision to destroy the dam, imagine what would've happened if Proximus did get a hold of the weapons inside the vault (including tanks, a ton of freakin tanks!) even if her personal reasons were clouded by her bias. I'm so excited to see what kind of relationship she'll have with the apes later, and if she'll have a redemption arc with Noa.
My mom‘s been a long time playing the apes fan and she modern trilogy and also this movie is actually surprisingly very well done that you don’t necessarily need to know everything that has happened in the last couple of movies
When I saw this in the cinema, I always hoped that both Noa and Mae would suddenly see a spaceship hurtling to the sea. I would've lost my collective shit, given all the other callbacks to the original.
Yeah. My honest reaction to the end of this movie was that that disc could be thing that helps humans take the world back... and I kind of hope that they don't. It's a very subtle but well-made point about what we've done to the planet as a species.
I definitely realised that it leans into the fact that the world isn't black and white at all, there are so many shades of grey and all the character are pretty much a shade of grey. They all want the best for themselves and those they care about, wheter it be a bad or good reason.

2:01 Fun Fact: Chimpanzees grow up faster than humans. That means if Noa and his friends are in their late teens they're around 13 or 14 years old.
Actually they could be about 8 years old. That´s the age chimps become teenager. xD Caesar did a revolution at that age.
@@casandradorantes3042 Yeah, but he said they were in their late teens, meaning they're nearly reaching adulthood.
Love the detail with Sun being the eagle that keeps holding on until the very end as if to ensure Proximus' death.
Raka forEVER!
Hmm, somewhat similar to how Raka seemed to be the last of the orangutans.
This was my most anticipated movie of the year and it did not disappoint so many fantastic moments and performances and the ending was mind blowing
I was so confused when I saw that little girl being called "Nova" because I thought: There's no way she's the same woman from the original.
And villains claiming Caesar's name is such a "how dare you say his name/use it like that!" 😂
No, I don’t want to pet Sylva’s fuzzy little head.
The weird thing about using bonobos as villains is that the species is more peaceful and sexually active than most other apes
The fact that you mentioned them both makes me wonder if there is a connection that could apply well to humanity.
It makes sense. As a civilization grows more complex, power is less and less tied to physical aggression and physical strength.
I don’t think we needed to know that last part….
@@KuruttaSeibishi lol, too late
Also they are lead by those female apes who are not the strongest or tallest in the group but those who are best at estbalishing connections with other female apes/ best social net work.
The visualization of the overgrown cities in this film and the detail in their individual buildings when the trio is doing their initial climb for the eggs gives me real hope for a good (at least visually) live action Horizon: Zero Dawn movie.
15:58 okay thank you for saying this because I also kept thinking that Noa was a “handsome” ape but I felt so weird for thinking that, I know I’m actually thinking the human face underneath is attractive but still
This is random but.. would love to see "everything great about the secret life of walter mitty"
One of the few Ben Stiller movies I liked (I'm not a fan of most of his comedy), and I think it puts an interesting twist on the origin.
Aren't we thankful for cinemawins, what a wonderful day!!
"jk, They often made more than one doll at a time." is the peak comedy & I WILL be using that as soon as the chance presents itself.
I think he was just trying to describe the telescope itself
It would make sense because a black hole can look like saturn
Can you do Godzilla Minus One next so I can confirm my opinion of how incredible that movie is?
Please consider making EGA The Adventures of Tintin (2011) one day.
Yes I adore that movie!
15:51 People have said that about Transformers One.
Trailers highlight the comedy and action while the nuance and drama is skirted over
Gonna b seeing it later today since it finally released in the UK
If the arc was split over multiple years and films, it might have some weight. Within the span the week or so it actually takes? No, it's nonsensical.
I like to think that there's some Prometheus style parallels you can make with Proximus' death. Being pecked to death by birds and casted into the depth for trying to give his people knowledge, or in his case opening the vault
I love this movie, one of my favorite movies I have seen this year.
the part that is painfully real, is that proximus will be the one remembered, despite the fact that it was always caesar who said "APES TOGETHER STRONG"
I love Kevin Durand’s performance as Proximus Caesar! 🦍
7:18 Well he DID say ancient, just never specified HOW ancient.
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAAAAY!!!!!!!
It is unlikely to be a coincidence that orangutans are by far the best swimmers of the three species, and only the orang drowned. He’s alive, period.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the bunker was hinted at by the Colonel in War
The return of the Friday uploads! WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!!!
Great movie, I hope they continue this story. Mae was awesome
I very much look forward to the day that you do the OG Apes movies.
Noa looking through the telescope is one of the best shots I've seen in a long time.
I went into this film not expecting much especially after such an amazing ending of the original Serkis trilogy but I honestly think they’ve done an incredible job with this film ❤ it feels like a completely new journey and not just a rehash of Rise, dawn and war.
I just found your channel!! I love it!! A movie suggestion…Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost! Thank you for keeping me entertained.
CAN YOU PLEASE DO THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION! 🙏 🙏
i liked the movie. i thought it was great 'new trilogy' being the descendents of the original trilogy and not understanding the lessons the original movies tried to tell us about war. and about trying to get back to what they considered the "norm" (the humans trying to be the dominant species again) but also showing the apes are just as known to be as corrupt as the humans they hate.
Adore these films so much so getting to watch you gush about them is a lot of fun.
I've never seen anybody mention the scar Noa gets from the cattle prod is almost exactly like Caesar's birthmark. Which is never commented on but, I'm pretty sure, intentional
Gotta admit I was singing along with my ape NOA here in this moment 23:06
3:30 Siberian here. Mosquitos definitely go much higher than 25 feet (MUCH higher). Not all of them, but even one will destroy your sleep.
Like a 100 feet high is reachable for them.
My mom‘s been a long time playing the apes fan and she modern trilogy and also this movie is actually surprisingly very well done that you don’t necessarily need to know everything that has happened in the last couple of movies
pls do The Iron Giant, it's definitely worth it
When I saw this in the cinema, I always hoped that both Noa and Mae would suddenly see a spaceship hurtling to the sea. I would've lost my collective shit, given all the other callbacks to the original.
Been waiting for you to cover this gem 💎
I've been waiting for this one. What a wonderful day!
i like that your honest i to would not open that door with out more guns and some doom music playing in the background
I would love to see you do Everything Great About The Village someday!
Yeah. My honest reaction to the end of this movie was that that disc could be thing that helps humans take the world back... and I kind of hope that they don't. It's a very subtle but well-made point about what we've done to the planet as a species.
The only thing wrong with this movie is supposedly killing off Raka
Thank you for your positivity and sharing your love of movies 🐵
Great timing! Just watched this movie yesterday
Thank you LOTR for making this mocap possible
God, even just the few seconds you showed of the CinemaSins video for this movie made me profoundly angry. So glad you exist, man!
I definitely realised that it leans into the fact that the world isn't black and white at all, there are so many shades of grey and all the character are pretty much a shade of grey. They all want the best for themselves and those they care about, wheter it be a bad or good reason.
Great vid about a great movie ^_^ I look forward to seeing you cover twisters!
Haven’t watched yet, but if there isn’t a win for every time Proximus says “EE-VO-LUTION,” I’m gonna be upset.
This movie introduced me to the franchise, I love it sm
I'll eventually watch but liked taking in the film this way in the meantime. Thansk Lee!

21:12 I like to believe she truly did feel sorry she had to betray him (albeit just him) but she truly did not believe that the apes having the bunker would be best (for humans).
I quite enjoyed Kingdom and am very much looking forward to the sequel(s)! Thank you for the video. It was very well timed since I just rewatched the movie about a week ago, lol.
God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)
Seeing frank gallagher in this movie was crazy
We got the most wholesome fella on TH-cam making 9/11 jokes before gta6
