I have my own little win for this movie I’d like to share:
As an Australian, I was legitimately surprised to find that Jack’s actor, Tom Burke, is British. His Aus accent is so good that it actually fooled me into thinking he was an Australian actor. Which has never happened to me before. It’s usually very easy to spot a fake Aus accent because you can almost hear the actors overthinking it. But Tom in this movie is spot on!

I agree, Aus accents are always way too over the top. Even by aussie actors, the one that comes to mind is Jai Courtney in Suicide Squad.

i watched some actor interviews before the film came out so I knew he was British
i think what surprised me was that Tom Burke was actually quite insistent on doing an Aussie accent, I think George Miller originally planned to just have Tom speak in his own Engish accent but he wanted to be authentic as possible

if you look closely at what Dementus is eating, while his men are killing P Jack, you can see they are mushrooms, more than likely psychedelic mushrooms, kinda adds to the "I'm bored." line, the trip was over, he's so desensitized by all the killing he has to take hallucinogens just to enjoy with anything, and like a long time drug addict, he doesn't even feel the pleasure from either the killing or the shrooms, probably from anything. and he probably doesn't even miss it. to quote my favorite song "I don't even miss the pleasure I can longer feel"

The problem with box offices these days is that Covid basically killed peoples drive to go to the theater, while streaming has killed the secondary revenue stream of DVD sales that could allow movies to do just OK at the box office as they new another paycheck was coming a few months later when dvd/blueray sales started

Consistent detail I love in this movie is how bad Dementus is at leading. Aside from the History Mans constant distaste for Dementus' ways, First after he gains rule over Gastown, it falls behind in production and the people are chaotic. His solution is to ask for MORE resources. Then the Octoboss leaves him. When Furiosa escapes Dementus, we can see Mr. Davidson sheathing his machete, implying he cut her down and helped her, then when Furiosa steals the car from Scrotus, in the background we can see Mr. Davidson cradling a dead Mr. Harley in his arms and we can assume he joined Joes side. Dementus tries to rule through pure fear and intimidation but he has nothing to offer but bloodshed and fighting. He is constantly being undermined by his own men but he either doesn't notice or doesn't care because, like you said, he's just trying to use bloodshed and pain to distract from his past. Max said it best in Fury Road. "If you don't try to fix what's broken. You'll go insane."

    • @thisbubblygoodness7611
      @thisbubblygoodness7611 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

yeah, that's what makes him so entertaining, he walks over his own men, not even to 'get ahead' but because he just has zero respect for anyone or himself, he's really just a dog chasing cars who's convinced other dogs to chase cars with him.
still tho, he can't be a terrible leader as he managed to run Gas Town for 13 years give or take. the spiral downwards of morale only seems to be a recent event imo

    • @thelastholdout

@@thisbubblygoodness7611 The easy answer to Gas Town lasting 13 years under his rule was that it was run so well prior to his takeover that it took 13 years for his terrible leadership to run it into the ground. 24:00 actually you can see mr harley sheathe his machette, because he actually cut off her arm. you can see throughout the movie that mr harley struggles with the whole kill-to-survive thing, or at least more than others. he doesnt want to shoot furiosa's mother so someone takes his rifle, he doesnt want to give up furiosa and the organic mechanic, and he wants to hurry the warboys along with refueling to make sure the chaos in gastown doesnt erupt any further than it has. also when he pulls furiosa and jack from the car wreck he still LETS them hold each other, all he does is have his hand barely on furiosa's shoulder.

Something that i noticed that i havent seen anyone else discuss is the way that the movie echos moments from classical Myth. The death of Jack always makes me think of The Death of Hector from the Trojan War, where Achilles drags Hector's body around the walls of Troy. And Dementus' suffering reminds me of the punishment of Tantalus where in the underworld Tantalus is surrounded by abundance but cannot reach it. Specifically that the fruit grows above him but there is no way that Dementus can reach up to it.

21:59 I'm fairly certain the changing colors of Dementus's cape and overall outfit are meant to represent the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The first Horseman is Conquest, riding a white horse. Dementus begins the movie wearing white and we see him going around conquering and abducting smaller gangs in the Wasteland, all while also hunting for the Green Place in order to take it over. He's literally doing conquest.
The second Horseman is War, riding a red horse. When Dementus goes up against the Citadel he becomes Red Dementus, staining himself with the red flares. However, the Citadel proves to be a far more challenging foe for Dementus than he had planned, one who cannot simply be conquered. So he goes to war with the Citadel, sparking the Forty-Day Wasteland War.
The third Horseman is Famine, riding a black horse. After taking over Gastown, Dementus dons more black and becomes Dark Dementus. However, time and the war have dwindled his supplies, leaving him and what remaining men he has starved for resources. They're in famine.
The fourth final Horseman is Death, rider of the pale horse. Once Furiosa finally captures Dementus, all of the other dyes and pigments he's used have been blown off by the desert winds, leaving his now graying hair painfully visible. The death comparisons become even more stark in the final shots of him with the peach tree growing out of him. Dementus's body is shriveled and emaciated, almost like a skeleton. He's not dead, being actively denied death and ironically used as sustenance for the tree's life, but he almost certainly would rather be.
All of this also makes the History Man's description of Furiosa as "The fifth Rider of the Apocalypse" feel a little more poignant.

yes and no. From my understanding Miller wrote a bunch of notes about the lore of the Wasteland as he was plotting Fury Road, and he shared those notes with the game developers. So he's wasn't exactly nodding to the game, more so he was referencing the material that was also ALSO used by the game. The game isn't exactly canon, which is why Scrotus looks very different from his game counterpart. Another example is there is a mission where you drive a car with a Skeleton on a motorcycle on the roof. That vehicle belonged to a dead warlord named Dr.D... the D stood for Dementus.

I dunno why I love the line of the "fifth horseman of the apocalypse"
According to the google machine: fifth horseman of the apocalypse rides a white horse into battle to bring a time of peace. The fifth horseman is a symbol of the end of the world's turmoil and the beginning of a new era.
Furiosa is the beginning of a new era.

This movie was my first 4D experience, and boy howdy was it fantastic. With the rise and fall of the seats as cars and bikes shot up and down dunes and canyons, getting water spray with each headshot, or the pounding score you could feel in your chest: it was a ride in the truest sense of the word. Add onto the physical experience with a really gripping story of pain and the strength you have to find within yourself to endure it, and you’ve got one of the best movies of the year. The fact that the movie kind of flopped at the box office is a tragedy, because it deserves all of its’ flowers, or I guess, peaches.

One time I went to the cinema for a different movie and while I was waiting in line the Furiosa trailer was playing. One part of it was the shootout scene between Furiosa and Hemsworth, and right as Furiosa is done speaking it cuts to Hemsworth firing a rocket launcher he got out of nowhere, and I just thought that was hilarious. Props to the editor for that.

There is one silver lining in that the Australian government funded $100 million of the budget for Furiosa, so it's not impossible the movie made back its money. I would really love for George Miller to get the opportunity to finish this trilogy -- these movies are unlike anything else out there, and people (not to mention film students) will be watching them as long as people are watching movies.

Cranky Black, I believe, is an offroad version of the Beck Customs F132 hot rod that was featured in the 2015 Need For Speed video game.
The car with the missing wheel that Furiosa is given by the hunchback and takes to the front lines, I'm fairly certain, could be the player's vehicle from the Mad Max video game, prior to the hunchback meeting Max.

When I saw Fury Road in theaters I immediately went and got tickets to see it again the next day. When I saw Furiosa in theaters I couldn't help but keep comparing it to Fury Road which was unfair. As I have now watched it twice more plus Sins, Wins, and Pitch I have a full appreciation for just how good this movie really is. The only fault I can find in it is that it didn't come out first as it seems that was the original intention. Also I know the game isn't considered canon but damn was it cool seeing the cross refences. Also Also if you ever play the game it needs surround sound or good headphones because it is an audio masterpiece.

It’s amazing how the story of this movie seemingly remained in tact for nearly a decade before it was made. Huge chunks of it made it into the 2015 game as flavor text and note and going back to that game after Furiosa makes it feel like it pretty much is what Mad Max The Wasteland would be.

The thing I really appreciate about Fury Road and Furiosa, is that a lot of the violence that is on the darker side is implied. They don’t need to show you the worst of it, because they trust their audience to be intelligent enough to get it. I also just genuinely believe that things like explicit SA and torture things aren’t in the directors taste.

As I said to some friends: I don't care if it's not the fashion the moviemakers want to go right now, this movie is how movies should be made. ESPECIALLY because of brutality and the actual physical props. People today are too used to bad films where everyone's clear and everything might be good to at least one character. In a real Wasteland there's always something to worry about and even if not real, it's just epic. And with some beautiful shots among all the characters's suffering

That knife that Furiosa uses during the truck fight is a real weapon (or inspired by one), it's one part gun, one part knife and one part brass knuckles (or knuckle duster), it's called the Apache revolver but it was actually invented in either France or Belgium with it being used by French gangs in the early 1900's.

I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember of George Miller’s masterpieces, but since Furiosa release, we have been inundated by reviews, stating only the box office, and I needed reminding I felt it was so brilliant, for fear that I would succumb to the belief that it was somehow lesser.
