Well.. It was a machine-translation! What did you thunk? That sounds conscious from a production-standpoint. Or do you expect that a person with no mental-issues whatsoever will be robotic enough to not comprehend a broken rendition of his mother-tongue?
Love that you took a moment to point out how translators and interpreters are used (tech, talking to the patient rather than the terp or translator). Most people don't know how that process works and it warms my heart that you took the time to educate folks about it 😍 Sincerely, a former ASL interpreting student. 🤟
I'm an interpreter, though I don't work in healthcare interpreting, and I also appreciated this aspect! @Pagan Deva that's unfortunate and unprofessional for an interpreter to say that. Sadly, in many countries, cost-cutting measures have put pressure on healthcare interpreters and degraded their working conditions to a point where many qualified professionals are quitting and their positions are having to be filled by those who are less (or not at all!) qualified. Sadly, short-term cost saving measures cost a lot more in the long term in terms of costs and patient safety :(
I am in recovery and have 2 years sober. I typically find myself rolling my eyes when doctors talk about addiction due to stigma inducing comments. HOWEVER, I loved how you showed some compassion to addicts in this review.
Congratulations on your sobriety! I have friends who use, and agree with your post about stigma around drug use. That stigma needs to change. It will save so many lives.
As a fellow doctor, I strongly recommend you watch Code black. I feel the writers really think about the cases they want to bring to screen. It’s placed in an ER so you obviously don’t spend much time with each of them, but it’s realistic. The relationship between doctors is portrayed really well. And no on call room sex haha.
Paola Andrade but that's the best part😩....I'm joking of course🙃 but fr tho who really watches these medical shows for their realism and medical accuracy😂 (except maybe actual medical professionals🤔...I guess.😐) I tune in to watch exagggerated medicine:) like the best heart surgeon in the globe perform heart surgery on a dude in a plane with nothing but a butter knife, a plastic straw and a sewing kit.😎
Yes, yes, yes...that show is probably the closest thing on television to actual medicine while not being a documentary. Chicago med has some good parts too. I just hate when they justify making ethico-legal violations.
I agree with Code Black, but just like most medical shows it can be over the top. They inserted a Foley cath into a nose top the bleeding, then inflated the bulb with 10mLs of hot coffee!!
As someone with chronic illness I can absolutely agree that medical professionals who smile, have a laugh and a joke with you, actually pays attention to you and builds a rapor and relationship with you makes an ENORMOUS difference to your time in the hospital and even sometimes to how you feel. They don't even need to be a doctor or nurse, it could be a cleaner or the lady who pushes round the tea trolley; feeling that you're not alone in a building full of strangers makes a world of difference to a patient's experience.
This show was on TV for the first time in France last night. My mother (she's a nurse) has stopped watch 2 minutes after the beggining : it was too "fake" for her... x')
TO be honest I find it boring and too dramatic. The only reason I would "watch" it (means I am doing something else whily the show runs) is because of Matt Czuchry who I love since the first time I saw him playing Logan Huntzberger. :)
I think it gets so much better after the first few episodes and the writers figure out how to write for the characters. The pilot sets up a show that they don’t really follow through on and redeem some of the more irredeemable characters from the first episode.
@@MrJagermeister i found it fun to watch, since i dont know much about medicine at the moment i am glad to watch it before everything comes crashing down
I really love your expiation on drug use. I remember one of my many trips to the ER for being a 9 year drug addict. I was actually home and got so high I was on the verge of an overdose and I passed out outside and it was a heat wave in my area. My family found me and rushed me to the hospital and I could only make like growling noises as a result of the drugs and I was severely dehydrated (so much that my kidneys were shutting down causing a ton of pain) and I had severe heat stroke (running an internal temp of 104) Luckily the doctors and nurses took really good care of me and were able to save my life. And I was definitely a very unpleasant patient because I was combative and confused like you said alternated mental status. Luckily I got some help and have been clean for almost a year now so thank you for doing what you do. You truly save people’s lives.
I’m a nurse in Sweden and I always tell doctors when they are about to do mistakes or if I’m unsure about their decision, because I don’t want to give the patient the wrong medication or send somebody to the OR if their INR is too high. Everybody’s human and makes mistakes and I just want the best treatment for the patient. The doctors I’ve worked with almost never get upset, and especially in the ER some of them asks us for advice.
We do not have much hierarchy in Sweden, which makes it easy for people further down the ladder to dare to speak out. Employees in Sweden are also expected to make their own decisions and do not always wait for orders. It's no problem to tell a manager that his decision is wrong and there will be no reprimands for such things.
“Maybe I’ve just worked in the wrong hospital” I’m sure all his colleagues want to grab him and pull him in a dark room like that... But.. ethics? idk Not exposing your colleagues at all, nonono I’m just saying
If he's not getting any, nobody is. 😄 Also having worked in a hospital myself, I have never witnessed a romantic anything. I was far too busy fantasizing about my next bathroom break to think about sexy time.. that's how you get bladder infections people!
Hey there Doctor Mike, I watched this video a few months ago and it was a bit hard to speak out on this, but I just wanted to thank you, your speech on doing the right thing for your family members who are in the situation of possible brain death and horrible quality of life after whatever happened really made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own situation. My mother passed just over a year ago now due to a stroke caused by TTP, and as I was her next of kin I was the sole decision maker in what happened with her. I of course spoke with my close family about what I should do and what would be best as she had 2-3 strokes prior which she struggled to bounce back from, and after a few days she still wasn’t responding. I fought myself so long on the decision just holding on for hope, but I slowly realized it was different from other times. I decided she shouldn’t suffer anymore, but I always question whether or not it was right. Every single doctor and specialist I spoke to said the same thing; That the risk is very high for her quality of life being extremely poor, and that my decision is honestly the best one they felt I could make, saying if it was their family they would be in the same situation and make the same decision. It just helps me feel better knowing I made the right decision, and that you have the same view they did. I knew the doctors hearts were in the right place, but hearing you say that where we know yours is in the right place, just gives me so much comfort and trust in the doctors that I had dealt with. Thank you Doctor Mike, I know it may not seem like that huge of a deal, but it really is to me
I'm so sorry you went through that traumatizing experience. I'm sure your mom appreciates the care you put into taking care of her and looks over you now. ❤
I would LOVE to hear your take on a newer episode. There is a villian for every season, but the more recent episodes started talking about insurance issues. Greys Anatomy has had some episodes recently about medical insurance complications as well. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE review a medical show dealing with that!
Chicago med or the night shift. Chicago med is less drama, more action and the night shift is about doing medicine in the field. And it’s all military doctors. Chicago med is my favorite show!
I need you to react to more of this show. It gets intense with drama, but also a lot of medical conditions that I think you would find interesting, and I would LOVE you’re take on it.
Dr. Mike, please do a series about correct FIRST AID in every, or in the most common situations. That would be such a great help. Have a nice day, dear. Love from Transylvania.
I was a drug addict. I’m in recovery but I’m happy you talked about it and did so with respect. I overdosed a few times and I’ve had nurses be incredibly rude to me but the last nurse I had was the nicest and actually talked to me. I overdosed from a relapse and she knew my mom was calling my phone and I was crying and wouldn’t answer. She asked why and I told her I relapsed today and she sat down and talked to me. I ended up telling my mother but I still had to get home on my own etc. I had the drugs in my bra and nobody knew. I didn’t have paraphernalia on me so they didn’t know if someone drugged me. The nurse hugged me goodbye after I was discharged and I got out of the hospital and dumped the drugs without thinking about it. I wanted heroin but I got carfet. Fetanyl I would of been ok. The amount I did shouldn’t of made me overdose so I know it was probably carfet at this point. And also- THANK YOU for what you said about physical dependency and it truly is the worst pain in the world. It’s the flu x100. And the restlessness is horrid. I hope any addict out there can get clean and see the light like I did. God willing, I’ll stay clean. Thank you for being a great role model and talking about addiction so unbiased.
Nicole Shett i know i’m a stranger but your story touches home & reminds me of my cousin who passed a few years ago. just wanted to say that i’m proud of you & i believe in you 💜💜
I'm glad you made it. Especially how you're keeping your outlook so positive. Having a positive outlook is the toughest thing to maintain but it just goes to prove how strong you have been. I wish and pray the best for you!
So when you want to be accepted by nurses you should accept that some nurses can react rude. Its not because they dont like you personally but because a lot of drug addictive destroy their bodies and still want treatments every day. Its very hard to be kind and patient all the time especially when some of the drug addictive patients misbehave as well
My parents are deaf and having an interpreter in the hospital or at doctor's offices have always been rough because they think that an interpreter on an ipad is good enough. But it can be laggy or not work well at all. So an actual person there interpreting is always best, and I love the fact that you mentioned talking to the patient directly instead of the interpreter because that's another big thing in the deaf world, eye contact and body language
About a year ago someone in my orchestra fell down without a pulse and he is still alive because someone with no medical training or first aid training started doing chest compression. This also inspired a lot of people in the orchestra to do the course.
I worked as an interpreter and I think it's great that you made it a point to say you're supposed to have a conversation with the patient and not the interpreter. This statement really educates the masses and makes interpreting easier
12:38 doctor mike influenced me so much that, when the dude said that she had no pulse, I was already shouting at him to do chest compressions. Even before mike mentioned them. Lmao 💀 thanks for the good influence. I'm trying to get into university to get my degree in medicine and to become a cardiologist
they told a little girl on greys to sing staying alive while giving her mom chest compressions on the phone. i didn’t even know this and now this is so cool to me

If you'd like to make comments with no backtalk, I suggest talking to yourself instead of posting on the internet.
The first episode is so far off from the rest of them. Looking back at it now, it feels like a whole different show. If you watch the most recent episodes (5-12) you will see it gets a lot more realistic, especially when they talk about the importance of nurses, medical errors and cost-based treatment decisions, that’s when things get intense. I hope you keep watching it, because it is really worth it
Love the content. I've watched a few episodes of this in Pre-med and was impressed. Now seeing your videos I've realized sticking to your books, watching content from doctors like you who give realistic and accurate information is best. These shows, even if they have some good examples, are purely fictitious and forced for entertaining not for educating at all.
I was introduced to the show by looking at Mikes reaction, now i watched all of it - was crying almost every episode, especially the season finale! "i love you -- i know, i love you too -- i love you more!"

@ 4:00 lol in Conrad’s defense (the blonde guy) he was purposely being a prick to Devon to shake him up & see if he would speak up for himself/have a backbone. Basically a test. And Devon passed the test with flying colors hah cause now they’re best friends and work wonderfully together
My mom was the lighthearted one that smiled all the time and made everyone on the ward happy to see her...as she was dying from cancer...in the last 10 days of her life. She was amazing. Love you mom💗
Doctor Mike, thank you for commenting on the translation/interpretation portion of this scene. Please remember that in the event a Deaf or Hard of hearing patient/family member/person is on hospital grounds, or any private/public facility the ADA covers, they have lawful rights to a qualified American Sign Language Interpreter live in the flesh. Should a live, qualified interpreter not be available, the Video Remote Interpreting on the iPad is a TEMPORARY tool for live saving, emergency situations. I work predominantly in medical settings: interpreting port placements, MRIs, labs, and other consultations. Being in the room and having access to the patient, physician and environmental visuals is integral to accessible information for patients to make decisions.
Omfg he HAS to watch the most recent Greys Anatomy where they *spoilers* take a cold main character and bring her back to life with 3 hours of chest compression. I wanted to tag Dr. Mike in the WHOLE time.
I love this show! Conrad gets better because you see that while some of what he does isn’t right he doesn’t care about money or what the head of the hospital thinks what matters to him is that the patient is taken care of and gets the treatment they need
YESHASettler this is absolutely true BUT I think the medical accuracy is better than in most shows. Also, the whole Dr. Bell thing is supposed to be that bad. He’s no longer a good surgeon but he refuses to let that be his reality. So peoples lives are in danger because of his pride.
xxxilva he’s only watched one episode and said in the medical situations, besides the opening surgery, it’s accurate. The life that the show says the doctors live is inaccurate. But in regards to how things are handled medically, it’s generally accurate.

Damn right!
That ‘Jurassic World®’ line rings to my mind!
Most people don't know how that process works and it warms my heart that you took the time to educate folks about it 😍
Sincerely, a former ASL interpreting student. 🤟
I’ve had phone interpreters tell me they don’t understand the dialect, and once tell me the patient is stupid.
Sadly, short-term cost saving measures cost a lot more in the long term in terms of costs and patient safety :(
I'm only learning ASL but I love it

I am in recovery and have 2 years sober. I typically find myself rolling my eyes when doctors talk about addiction due to stigma inducing comments. HOWEVER, I loved how you showed some compassion to addicts in this review.
Congratulations on your sobriety! I have friends who use, and agree with your post about stigma around drug use. That stigma needs to change. It will save so many lives.

Omg yes! He should

I just hate when they justify making ethico-legal violations.
blessing B But...does what you want to watch also involve people having sex in hospital and senior doctors being an authoritarian ass all the time?
I agree with Code Black, but just like most medical shows it can be over the top. They inserted a Foley cath into a nose top the bleeding, then inflated the bulb with 10mLs of hot coffee!!
Dotti it's still on
As someone with chronic illness I can absolutely agree that medical professionals who smile, have a laugh and a joke with you, actually pays attention to you and builds a rapor and relationship with you makes an ENORMOUS difference to your time in the hospital and even sometimes to how you feel. They don't even need to be a doctor or nurse, it could be a cleaner or the lady who pushes round the tea trolley; feeling that you're not alone in a building full of strangers makes a world of difference to a patient's experience.
I teach CPR and get my students to sing "another one bites the dust" 😂

Scrubs, but i'm not quite sure how much you'll get from the first episode. Might have to do a later one to get more into the medical stuff.
I agree. most of season 1 is mostly comedy & introduction of characters.
Its for sure worth checking out. Everything except for Dave Franco's season, season 9 doesn't exist in the Scrubs universe 😅
Jan-Erik Svenning we dont talk about that season
The episode 'my lunch' is a good one with ethical debate about organ donation, maybe season 3 or 4?
What about Nurse Jackie? Idk
So..
What about "Scrubs"?

Thank you, for all that you do! With best wishes from the UK❤
Team work makes your dreams work.
We do not have much hierarchy in Sweden, which makes it easy for people further down the ladder to dare to speak out. Employees in Sweden are also expected to make their own decisions and do not always wait for orders. It's no problem to tell a manager that his decision is wrong and there will be no reprimands for such things.
I do have a favor! One of my classmates are planning to become a nurse so I was wondering if you have any tips that I can give to her!

That's the thing with nurses, they can be either great and empathetic or be rude and judging.
You are amazing, I hope the same for you! Stay that kind beacon of light for those in need

He would rather ban Dr. hope from his channel. It's completely not ethical and just overall douche baggery. You're saying everyone got over that? Who is "everyone"?
Snek Chan so if Dr Hope was the first to open a channel of this kind no one else can / must? Gerrara here ✋
The Resident is my favorite medical show, and I’m going into the medical profession to become a midwife, so I also really learn a lot from you explaining different things about medicine and I think it’s all really interesting. I would love if you kept going in the series of The Resident, I would watch every video of it! 😊
