Let’s talk about a throwback classic, ER. This is the first medical show I’ve ever known about and watched. I remember being a youngin watching George Clooney and wondering what it would be like to actually be a doctor. Now I am a doctor so I’ve decided to share with you what I think about the pilot episode.
We have to keep in mind this show is about 2 decades old and a lot has changed in the medical space but it is still incredibly accurate. I love the character development and writing in this show because it does feel authentic to what happens during hospital hours. I guess you can say that I am a fan and that ER is accurate!

I had a doctor insist I was pregnant based on daily nausea and wouldn't listen when I told him that last time I had the EXACT SAME symptoms it was acid reflux. He tested me for "a parasite" I think it was a pregnancy test. Like if you wanna confirm that I'm not pregnant fine, but don't lie to me.

I love gore and horror movies but open fractures as of late have been added to my list of "Injuries that unsettle me"
@@jonnieneuhart1861 there's two things that bother me injury wise. Compound fractures and incidents involving teeth.
You can also get a fat embolism from a open long bone fracture. This can cause injury to the heart (i.e heart ischemia that can cause a hear attack) or a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung).

One thing that always stuck with me as a new mom was hearing “a baby can’t cry itself to death.” Meaning, if you’re overwhelmed take a break. Let the baby cry for a few minutes, make sure it’s safe, step outside, or in the shower, put on headphones, whatever you need to decompress if you feel yourself at that breaking point. I never had to use that method luckily, but it’s something I’ve told all new moms since then. And also I’m always a phone call away. I will come babysit to give a mom a break. Mental health is soooooo important not only for mom but for baby.
The instinct is to immediately calm the child. But you _can_ walk away from a crying child. It won't be the end of the world. The baby won't love you less.
I've heard it's good for the babies, too. Let them get used to delayed gratification so they won't grow up to be too selfish.
Damn, that intro song still gets me. If you were a kid in the 90s and you heard the ER intro, you knew it was time for bed.
That perfect fist pump to the music was always so satisfying.
In my house it meant it was time to watch ER with my mum, no matter how late it was!

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was 19 and the best advice I ever got was that if I was so tired and couldn’t take the babies cry (because we all know that not sleeping and the babies cry is really stressful) I should put the baby in the crib and walk away. Take big breaths and relax a few seconds then pick the baby up. Because it’s so easy to shake the baby when frustrating.
My parents were also 19 when they had my older sister. Dad worked nightshift so mum was alone during the night. She said when she would get overwhelmed she would make a hot chocolate and go sit in the middle of the oval next to their house to take a minute for herself.

I had my first at 19 too I think the worst part was my baby slept great and hardly cried but there was a few women that didn’t wake to their babies cries which also woke up my baby/after getting mine back to sleep I woke up a lady and asked to hold her baby got hers to sleep as well by the time I tried to sleep it was 7 am and all the lights were turned on and my son started crying I thought I was going to have a break down😭I’m happy she trusted me tho because I was walking around in jeans and a T-shirt my belly was flat and others were wondering what I was doing there(easy birth but I was anemic)
You _can_ walk away from a crying child. It is doesn't warp them. It doesn't make them love you less. If you're frustrated, your baby will pick up on that, making it harder to soothe them and you get more frustrated. Just take a few minutes to relax. You and your baby will be better off for it. And there is ABSOLUTELY NO shame in reaching out for help. Raising children is hard. Rewarding but difficult. Sometimes you need help. Please ask for it. Doesn't make you a failure or a bad parent. 😻

I feel the same way and when your like me and is too stubborn to go to the hospital for any reason that isn't an emergency, I can learn what to do in situations that aren't life threatening while not going!

I am a social worker and we call shaken baby syndrome “Abusive Head Trauma,” now. I love how you address the signs of child abuse. So so so important as physicians and healthcare professionals are often the first people to see this and they are key to helping us address it and to keep the children safe. Doctors not getting enough sleep sounds like a recipe for disaster. I'm sure a lot of mistakes could be prevented if medical professionals wouldn't be that overworked.

This very issue is actually brought up in either season 5 or 6 with Dr. Corday going through residency to remain in the U.S. after her fellowship ran out/was pulled.
Back in the 70s, they had my brother on 72 hour shifts. I understand the influence was due to the med units in the Korean War. Ugh. Such a bad idea.

My father worked as a plumber in a local hospital, he enjoys watching ER because it reminds him how much hospitals have changed and how much they haven't changed
I love ER. I watched it when I was a kid through my teens and early 20s. I grew up with that show (my mom was a fan so I watched it with her. I know, not kid friendly material but I absolutely loved the show and followed all the storylines). The technical wizardy on display on that show is amazing even today. No one dares to do the walk and talks the show made famous. No one will even attempt to film the insanely long shots they were famous for. And they did it every single week with medical jargon tossed around and so many FX in the scene. Impressive storylines and character development. It was provocative and touched very sensitive subjects. They had a gay character in the 90s that wasn't a caricature. The action was unbelievable and it was gory. They even had a live show for crying out loud. Live for both coasts, they did it twice. Each episode cost 13 million dollars. It still holds that record for most expensive show ever adjusted for inflation. Groundbreaking and heartbreaking. A masterpiece

As someone who has polycystic ovary syndrome, that was exactly what I was thinking when you paused to point out how absurd it was that they immediately diagnosed that girl with an ectopic pregnancy. It even works with her not having had a period recently; irregular and/or infrequent menstrual cycles are one of the most notable symptoms. They definitely should have asked whether she has a history of irregular menstruation before jumping to the conclusion that it was any kind of pregnancy.
And the lack of regular periods may not be connected to the lower abdominal pain. They could have entirely separate causes.
All true, however in the manner the symptoms occuring I would initially go with an ectopic pregnancy until proven otherwise. Why? Ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency while the other diagnoses aren't.
@@absolut_dre you can suspect ectopic and do further testing to confirm without jumping to that diagnosis.
Omg I just realised she said it was a few months ago (her period).. an ectopic can kill you by 6-8 weeks, it doesn't take that long to have bleeding and pain. He also never confirmed a pregnancy!? Madness!!
I feel for you, darlin. I have the same thing and those cysts can be soooooooo painful..... the irregular periods, etc.
I don't usually comment on videos but I have watched many of these videos, which I think are great btw, I have to say as a nurse I appreciate how often you mention nurses and the work we do and the challenges we and physicians face. I personally have dealt with a patient getting violent with me once and it is terrifying so I like that you mention that it can create burnout. While I never take it personally, it is something to be thought about.
On a side note, you should totally do an episode of Nurse Jackie- just for the nurses out there!!!

The area I live in Norway the nurses have to deal with patients most often dropped off by police who are going to psyc but won’t be let in before they’re detoxed so they’re dumped in the wards for the nurses to manage, they often get violent, they try stealing just about anything and that makes them very hard to handle and stretches the nurse staff very thin. One patient had to be locked in a bathroom with the soap dispenser removed (since the handwash is alcohol based he would drink it) because he was a danger to everyone including himself. How they manage to be so incredibly warm and sweet despite that is beyond me, they’re pretty amazing people who deserve better and safer work enviorments.
I have worked at a hospital for many years in a non-clinical job, my wife worked for 28 years at the same facility in a clinical position and my daughter-in-law is a physician at Children's Hospital. She can not say enough about the role of nursing in today's healthcare - she has great love and the utmost respect for nurses and the profession. As well, my wife and I share that view. Doctors and Surgeons are obviously the heart of medicine but the Nurses are the soul. Without them, there is no foundation for patient care to stand on. Thank you for the difficult and good work you do each and every day.

I work in teens Behavioral Health, and the burn out from being struck by patients is one of the most dangerous things I deal with every night on a nightly basis

@@NotSandraBullock I don't think it was cancelled the creator of the show said, he wanted the show to be a two season arc.
ER was created and executive produced by Michael Crichton. He went to med school but never practiced medicine. So he had some degree of background and understanding. He also paired with Steven Spielberg to help develop the TV storytelling side of ER.
Destiny McKeever never practiced medicine? Yes he did.... I read his book called "five patients" that he wrote after finishing residency
I meant in that he never gained his license following his clinical rotations at Mass General... Five Patients is based on his observations during that rotation... Mass General is basically why he stopped pursuing medicine after graduation to mainly focus on writing...
I didn't mean to down play his academic knowledge at all... it was a great contributor to his fiction... he also attended the Salk Institute which focuses greatly on DNA and biology...
This is the first T.V. show I've seen where they defibrillated a rhythm that is actually shockable and is not asystole. I was pleasantly surprised!
Michael Crichton the creator was an ER Doctor before he became a world wide best selling author. Its based on his experiences apparently and was originally meant to be a film that Spielberg persuaded him to make into a tv show.

My mum was a GP (she’s retired now), and she always said ER was the most medically accurate of all the medical dramas. For a while, anyway. She said it got silly in its later seasons, and she quit watching.
Personally I stop watching once Carter leaves. I do go back and watch the final season because not only does Carter come back but so do the rest of the old cast
Yea after season 8 it goes downhill
it always happens with shows that go on so long. they just run out of story, and once most or all of the original cast is gone its just not the same

Dr. Mike, I'm a fellow family medicine doctor, transitioning from outpatient practice to a hospitalist in a couple of weeks. When I was coming through residency, our hour restrictions were no more than 30 hours in a shift. I remember going in at 6am and getting off at noon the next day, and early on we did this q3d. What I love about this episode is that ER made me want to be a physician, and what I have a hard time with most shows are the inaccuracies, lol. Thanks for doing this episode. Brought back memories for me!
Now that I am an ER doctor myself, I should go back and rewatch it... I remember watching these when I was a child and thinking to myself, what a miserable job 😂😂😂

Doctor Benton and Carter relationship was one of the best things on this show. I absolutely love how it progressed throughout the seasons.

Gypsy Dust i have a really hard time with that too. I tend to pick shows apart. I had a boyfriend once who kept telling me that I had to learn to suspend belief, if I wanted to enjoy watching TV and movies. But is so hard!

I can just imagine Hollywood producers mining the ERs for newborns and petitioning the parents to use them in their productions, were those rules not in place.

I was always terrified of doctors, but because of your videos, my fear of them decreased enough for me to actually go at almost 30 to my first ever check up since I was a child and i'm now on my way to living a healthier life! Keep doing what you do!

I've always been big since I can remember. Not "plus size", but morbidly obese. There were never doctors that really talked to me as a person (I've even had a doctor dismiss my symptoms when I had the flu to talk about weight loss surgery when I was in college), and rather than keeping on pushing through and finding a doctor to work with, I went the opposite direction. The idea of going to the doctor sent me into a whirlwind of anxiety bordering on panic that even when I was sick, I would wait until I felt like I was dying before I grudgingly went. Hearing dr Mike talk about things in a way that is easy to follow and not intimidating through the safety of a computer video that I could stop at any time slowly helped me overcome my fear. Now i'm working with a great doctor who is helping me stay on a wellness plan that is right for me, and I have never in my life felt so good.
(Sorry my story was so long...)
Some doctors are very judgemental lol... when I was younger I was barely 30 pounds over healthy and everything that would happen to me would be because of my weight. Before I was diagnosed, my appendicitis and gallstones were "just a product of my weight." I'm happy that you're turning a new, healthy leaf now, though! :D
Not trying to be mean or anything, but they were doing their job (if they were rude about then maybe not) but obesity is the number one in killing that is preventable, it kills many many people and shouldn’t be something that is overlooked or not mentioned.
@@boy_2478 I absolutely agree my weight should have been addressed and that being 350lbs is very dangerous. What I don't agree with was the doctors ONLY focusing on my weight. In my example in my last comment, I didn't just have flu like symptoms. I had the flu. And he didn't even want to test for it because he was so focused on weight loss surgery. When you're overweight, it can feel like you're never allowed to be sick with anything not related to your weight.
I could watch Dr. Mike do tv drama reaction videos all day.

When it came to the shaken baby syndrome and hearing the baby have that curdling screaming, I felt so moved. I don’t know anyone that it happened to. And my own son used to have strong crying in the afternoons in the first year. It was emotionally stressful but child abuse is never an option. My heart goes out for all those victims that was completely helpless to this. I’m so happy to be able to kiss my healthy son and get a hug from him every day today at 2 1/2 years old now.
Love the face swap at the end of the video 😂 But FINALLY ER!! Been waiting for this one. Should definitely keep this series going and watch episodes in later seasons to see how they progress! Love it!
My friend's husband has PTSD from a vicious assault when he worked as an EMT. It's scary when patients attack :(

When you said that a primary factor in staying healthy is to know what goes into your body, I was eating a chocolate mousse cake. I can happily report, that I know exactly what that is - so thanks for the good advice, and for keeping me healthy!
There’s a British show called “call the midwife” set in the Victorian times (early 1900s) and I’d love to see your reaction to it, and how the medical skills and knowledge compare to present day❤️😀
pineapples_never_lie _ yes, please. It’s so well done. I worked as a medical tech in the military on an OB ward and I have to say this tv show is so well done. It’s really something to see such young girls out doing home deliveries. So confident just like I was in my early 20s, afraid of nothing until life teaches you there are things to fear.

I have worked in retail pharmacy for 4 years, and healthcare worker abuse is so true. I've been in situations where our pharmacist have been threatened, cursed at, and had stuff thrown at her. It is terrible.
I'm a Therapist, and yes, it happens all the time. Im also kind of a "sponge" so it takes an effort to not let myself get too emotionally involved, although sometimes it's almost impossible. We are all human.

14:24 I recently got certified in Early Childhood Development(I can work in a preschool) the child abuse course was the hardest to take. Shaken Baby Syndrome was one of two things that gave me nightmares when I was taking the classes.
My grandma was a nurse, and she actually helped write an article in the newspaper about the dangers of shaken baby syndrome. Look up Fritz and Shaken Baby Syndrome, if you're interested in reading it.
It was a little eerie watching the scene with the cancer diagnosis knowing that the actor who played the patient, Miguel Ferrer, really did die of cancer last year.

It was sad to see what happened to Vanessa Marquez who was a former nurse on ER. It’s a shame she wasn’t able to find help when she needed it.
I had no idea about this. Just looked it up. I'm a big ER fan and it's sad to hear. Seems like there are more and more mental health issues....a problem that doesn't distinguish age, race sex, financial and media status etc. Definitley needs to be more research on this growing problem.

Frankly I'd be more likely to praise the doctors that spend years learning how to save lives rather than some imaginary 'lord' who does nothing to save lives or reduce suffering!
This show is the absolute best! You really should review more episodes. Carter's growth is wonderful to watch!
I recommend the whole ER season. Why? This was the doctor show that started it all for other doctor shows to come. I do recommend the episodes of when Dr Green was attack, the episode Dr Carter was also attacked and when Carter had to evacuate the hospital and later on in the series had to lockdown the hospital due to a case of smallpox.

Hey Dr Mike! After suffering from anxiety and panic attacks and most people not knowing what this actually is, could you please explain what triggers panic attacks and how to overcome them.
There are so many triggers for panic attacks and it can vary from person to person. The best thing to do to find your trigger is to keep a journal of what you were doing before the attack. Sounds, smells, sights, and feel can all trigger an attack. Hope this helps.
You can also find great coping skills online. Not everything works for everyone. It's a process to find what works for you
When did they start? What was happening at that time in your life? I found it's replays that get to me. Counseling helped tremendously, getting me to process the upsets that built up over time and created the set up for each of the attacks in my now life.

Well, if you have PD (panic disorder), then the attacks can be random. With that said, they are 99% controlable. When I first developed PD from PTSD, I was having 20+ panic attacks a day. Then through being mindful, accepting my emotional state and realizing what's going on, I learned to control them (about 1-2 a year). It takes time, but the payoff is huge.
As anyone would suggest, the very first thing you need to do is see a mental health professional. See if either therapy, or meds, or a mix of both can be benifitial to you.

My mom was a registered nurse for decades with the Mayo Clinic and she loved this show. I remember her watching it a lot and occasionally chiming in when things were ever inaccurate, but she loved it and watched it to the end.

I lost my mother in 2015. She had been a cancer patient my whole entire life and in fact I became her only caregiver at age 5. She died in a hospital. The ten days we were there, I got a touch aggressive verbally when I felt they were taking too long with things and a nurse said to me "You know I have other patients" which earned an aggressive "How many are going to die this week?" After my mom passed I went home and cooled down. She died at the end of October. Around Christmas of that yesterday I brought them a Keurig machine (they were living off of instant garbage and the whole time my mom was there they were bringing her what they had which was better than the hospital coffee and still garbage lol) because honestly... As stressed and angry as I was I know they have it so much harder. Like you said, I lost one mom. They lose people all the time and they were so gentle and loving with our family. Even now I still get grief items in the mail from the hospital. I am so grateful to the amazing staff of Massachusetts General Hospital Oncology. As upset as I was, they were so patient and so good to my mom. People don't think about what doctors and other medical staff need to go through. No they're not losing their own family but working in a profession where you lose people regularly? It takes a toll on the heart. I am so, SO grateful to all that you do. For every patient and family too stuck in their own situations to say so, thank you. So much.
I watched ER as a kid too. Great commentary. Thanks. I’d like to see a video where you react to a montage of different tracheotomy scenes in movies and tv. Like ER: there’s an episode where George Clooney does a tracheotomy in the rain with a Bic pen. There’s another one in The Heat and Sandra Bullock’s character does one in a dinner because someone is chocking. The list goes on... I always find it hilarious.
Always good to see a fellow fan of The Heat. I absolutely love that movie! I watched it sooo many times in a row (something I do with very few movies-I normally only rewatch a movie once every few years, if at all)-several years ago-that I won't be able to get much out of watching it for probably quite awhile longer. I'm sure I'd still enjoy it if I watched it now, but the effect of the humor would likely be dulled. That's how much I like it-I absolutely wore it out.
That's the first episode I remember ever seeing. It's stayed with me since then, and actually got me hooked on the series!

I'm a certified nursing assistant and I do private duty through an agency and I deal with individuals mostly with Alzheimer's and Dementia and they can get very violent at times because they have no idea what's going on. I've been kicked, punch, pushed, spot on, and bitten by clients.

aw man, ER was an institution in my family in the early 2000s. every Thursday night we'd sit down at 9:00PM (Midwest, so central time) and watch it together. that show taught me so much, most of it not even about medicine -- although it's probably a huge factor in why I got so interested in medicine. ER was the first time I saw gay people depicted as actual people, not just caricatures or cautionary tales, and they were in the cast too! I was too young to notice when Ellen came out so Dr. Kerry Weaver was probably the first time I saw someone like me on TV.

One problem with Nurse Jackie is the portrayal of pharmacy. A dispensing robot would NOT replace a pharmacist. There are hospitals that have those types of robots already to cut down on manual labor and the pharmacist and pharmacy techs still have plenty to do. Also, a pharmacy must keep track of what drugs come in and out of the pharmacy. What Nurse Jackie portrays the pharmacist doing in the show is highly illegal and would result in the pharmacist losing their license if caught .

I love you for advocating for health care violence awareness. When I was working in health care I had my nose broken, dragged by my hair, etc.. and simply expected to come back with no sort of consideration. And refused workers comp.

I started having BLINDING pain in the right lower part of my abdomen (regularly), my cycle started being very irregular and I was sexually active (even though it was protected sexual intercourse) and after numerous visitis to the ER it turned out I had an endometrial cyst in my right ovary. I went through surgery and they found more cysts and adesions and a Stage III Endometriosis.
So, THANK YOU for including "cysts" as a reason for abdominal discomfort in women. Sadly I had to visit the ER three times before a Doctor thought it could be a gynecological problem.

Love your commentary, love your insight, you’ve always been extremely accurate and I appreciate that. Would you consider doing some commentary on EMS shows? I know you work in the ER so you deal with ambulance crews on a regular basis. You could sit down with a medic and between the two of you I believe there could be some great observations.

You should react to the anime "Hataraku Saibou" (Cells at Work). It's a Japanese children's educational TV show that basically teaches health education. One episode pertaining to cancer was even praised by a cancer specialist for its accuracy.

I love ER. But I remember when I broke my ankle and went to the ER, I don't remember a flurry of activity around me like you always see in these shows. It was a horrible open fracture and my foot was at a very odd angle. Of course this was over 35 years ago and I was in shock. I think there was an hour between me arriving and going into surgery. The one think I distinctly remember is I kept telling the nurse to cover my ankle so my parents didn't have to see it.
Yeah but ER takes place in a crisis emergency room, which is a designated major crisis center in a city center, so reaction is a bit different, staffing a lot different
Sometimes it's really busy, sometimes it's empty. On my last night shift i the waiting room was pretty much empty, on the one before we were up till 6am.
Still I'm surprised you waited that long, in our ER you would have been seen in under half an hour by a doctor and provided with pain relief before even seeing a doctor.
I got cut in the wrist with a motorized saw. 20 minutes before I saw a doctor. 12+ hours before getting surgery. Then six months on sick leave.
Doctor then told me to go by a lottery ticket.
I still can't believe how some parents can abuse their children especially when they're still so young and fragile. No matter how hard, annoying or tiring it might be, I could not imagine how it would be even considered. This is truly heartbreaking and I wish that none of your children or future children (friends and family in general) would have such traumatizing experience in both physical and mental way.

I was ***shocked**** Dr. Mike did not mention this simple technique.
It's not an actual thought process, I studied psychology for quite a while and when abuse like this happens it isn't a thought. It is merely a reaction to being so stressed that you can't think. Not giving excuses, just explaining what I was taught. Rationality is gone at that point and reaction takes over. Someone here said that the best advice they got was to check out the baby then put them in the crib and walk away to gather yourself. I was told the same thing, make sure that they don't need a diaper change, they aren't hungry she r anything else, put them in the crib and go collect yourself. It is best for the baby and for you. Believe me I have had to use that method when my kids were little a lot, because I did all of it by myself. My husband at the time refused to do anything to help me or the kids which made it harder for me to get any time for myself and destress. But I did it and all 3 of my babies are now in their 30's and doing well.

@@ethanpet113 Well, they do have a time frame for the show, so some things are sped up/skipped over. Furthermore, I think it was the guy whote wrote or created the show had went to med school, etc. Things have also changed since the 90s as well.

Dear Dr. Mike, I love what your doing. Your not only a doctor but a teacher. I think that it is so important that just about everybody know a little about everything when it comes to health and the body. Like what they teach you preparing you to be a doctor or a nurse. You encourage others to learn and to keep researching on their own. Be their own detective in medicine and health and understanding the human body and mind and I think that's so great. You do me proud Mike. I'm sure the rest of the world feels the same.

Im glad you finally did E.R. watched it from debut to end. BUT every medical show has argued about how to do the shock paddles...On the chest or the side/chest.
Yeah but never the abdomen. I also learned to do it with one paddle at the top of the chest and the other one on the lower chest side. They're both still on the chest!

er was one of the BEST TV medical programs. As a now retired Radiologic Technologist, I would follow the entire process from patients entering to the end when they were diagnosed and treated. Great drama and sharing the personal lives of the staff was excellent.

Recommendation: Go REALLY retro! Doogie Howser MD (I mean, COME ON, who doesn't love Neil Patrick Harris and how much of a kick would it be to see him in his first major role again?) or St Elsewhere (Denzel Washington, Ed Begley Jr, , William Daniels, Howie Mandel, David Morse, talk about a show full of celebs!) which was on on Weds so a school night, but my Mom would occasionally let me watch it with her in her bed, and I would fall asleep there afterwards. You should also watch that Scrubs episode called My Sacrificial Clam (which, upon reflection, sounds naughty for some reason) but has some nice little surprises in it!
