Stir in the green onion/scallions (the green part of the onion). Then add the thawed hash browns. Stir really good to make sure hash browns are coated. In this recipe they recommend scooping into individual ramekins to give it an overall crispness when cooked. If not put into a greased casserole dish. For ramekins, place on cookie sheet so there isn’t any spilling. In this video the temperature was never talked about. I subscribe to America’s Test Kitchen and they have similar recipe. They bake at 350 degrees F. Bake for 45 minutes.

When you left tv it broke our hearts and he vowed never to watch food network again. My sons first cook book was the kids book you made. My daddy passed away last year and your videos each night (am in California) feels like a gift from my daddy reminding me of those days watching you on tv with him and him writing down your recipes so we can cook them together in the kitchen. You gave me a bit of my heart back and thank you.

She has 3 restaurants with 7 locations, 15 cookbooks, she’s had 3 tv shows on the Food Network channel and has even earned a 2007 Emmy. She is legendary! I just thought I’d share that in case you didn’t know. I’ve watched her for probably 15+ years now. 🙂 Anyway, that’s awesome that she has inspired you. This is hands down the best hashbrown casserole that I’ve ever tasted. A constant request to make this for every cookout, breakfast or pot luck. Note - I add minced onion. Same exact recipe just throw in some minced onion. Brings out that tasted even more. Amazing
Would I be allowed to share my recipe with you?.. I am so sorry if I am out of line, but this one is a HUGE hit in my family. You melt 1/2 cup butter in a large saucepan, add 1 medium chopped onion, 1 can of cream of mushroom soup,1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup sour cream. Whisk all these together until cheese is melted. Stir in 1 bag of FROZEN Hash Brown Potatoes ( I use McCain Cubed). Spread into a greased 9"by 13" casserole dish. Sprinkle crushed corn flakes over top. Bake @ 350 F for one hour. Sooooooo yummy!!

Im only 44 but i remember the first time i saw pre cut hashbrowns. Im a florida southern girl and never thought of buying precut taters either. My dad grew up in the 30s and 40s and had 15 brothers and sisters. I bet my grandma would have died over this convenience product back then. Our grandmas had it hard didnt they? My dad tells me the story of how his mom would have the whole dining room table full of bread rising on sunday morning while they were at church and my grandma would bake it as soon as she came home so there would be bread ready for the week for all those kids. He hadnt had a piece of store bought sliced bread until he was 20. How amazing that house must have smelled during that day. Thank u for being u my southern sister. I am from Kansas as well and we have been making this for generations!!!! We call it cheesy potato casserole, but the "name" for it I have found is funeral potatoes. We also brown up some corn flakes in butter and put them on the top the last 10-15 mins of cooking. YUMMMMMMY!!!
Hey Paula, here in the Pacific Northwest, and Oregon in Idaho and Utah, we call this recipe funeral potatoes because when one of our church members or one of their family members dies, this is the go-to potato dish that other families in our congregation make for those who are having a luncheon after a funeral, so that's why we call it funeral potatoes. The only thing different about this recipe versus the recipe that I'm used to prepare is that softened cream cheese isn't in our recipe! So I'm going to give this recipe a shot and I'm sure it'll be fantastic!

Out west we make a very similar recipe called funeral potatoes. Delicious! Cream cheese is a lovely addition. Note that if you use the cubed potatoes from the freezer section you have to bake it longer to fully cook the potatoes. They taste a bit raw if you cook them the same amount as the shredded potatoes.

Paula Deen, I just adore you and your family. I have really enjoyed binge watching your quarantine cooking shows, especially while struggling with my MS flaring up. I typically don’t binge watch but I’m having to rest it up and you’re keeping me company and definitely entertained. I relate to you so much and laugh when you can’t read something because I do the same exact thing. I’m up here in Gainesville Georgia and plan to visit Savannah soon as my niece is down there. Out west we make a very similar recipe called funeral potatoes. Delicious! Cream cheese is a lovely addition. Note that if you use the cubed potatoes from the freezer section you have to bake it longer to fully cook the potatoes. They taste a bit raw if you cook them the same amount as the shredded potatoes.
