Ex Army MAN HX Falcon radio truck - walk round in depth SPECIAL

  • Meet Arnie, stable mate to Rosie and similar base truck. He’s ex UK Army (Gurkha Battalion) built as a very complex Radio Truck. All the radio stuff has been taken out, but the majority of it is there.
    Plus I’ve not purchased him to convert, he’s got another job to do which I explain in the video.
    Join me on this in depth walk around as I take in what I have purchased. And no? I’m not kidding, this is the first chance I’ve had to go around him myself!
    If you are interested in Arnie, or anything else I’m doing. Do give the like and subscribe buttons a tap and come back and see what I get up to with Arnie.
    Fancy one yourself? Buying unseen (or on the strength of a short video clip) isn’t without some anxious moments but if you are interested, and want someone who can walk you through and make sure you get exactly what you are expecting, talk to Withams Specialist Vehicles.

    The frames around the back of the cab are for ECM, electronic counter measures. Basically various signal jammers for IED's. The Khaki rubber thing you found in the cab is a Picitanni(probably spelt wrong) rail buffer for a rifle, used to smooth off the sharp edges on the accessory rails on the rifle. As for the back body stuff, no idea, I was a VM not a scalyback!

    What a great purchase and well done you! I would be all over that as my OCD would go bonkers finding out what everything did. I used to be a Chargehand at MAN and we did a lot of corrective and modding work on these when they first came over. Basically MAN are great trucks as long as the Electronics are working.
    Google what an MAN Conversion File is ... 🤭
    But you have to ask what on earth the MoD were thinking getting rid of a clearly very usable truck in times of tight budgets. Even if the box of sparks on the back was obsolete the truck itself still has miles in it.

      @@j-p-1 From the F2000 and absolutely from the TG series trucks, MAN made the two major ECUs (FZR and ZBR) in each truck re-programmable. So whenever you changed a part or in any case after every Inspection or service the dealer software (via the ever present laptop) would a) approve the part numbers fitted and b) register all changes. This would then create a digital file (the Conversion File) that was sent online to the MAN Main Gate in Munich where the mainframe systems would update that truck's unique data file. Having done this it would then generate an updated Conversion File that would then be uploaded to the truck ECUs. This file would have any fixes or updates created by MAN as user experience in the design improved.
      it was actually a clever idea but very (VERY) time consuming and it often required extra quite unrelated work. For example after replacing the door electric switch for the windows, mirrors and locks you had to calibrate the throttle and clutch operation on the laptop! That is if the system allowed you to fit the part number you had in stock ....
      God bless technmernology!

      @@1chish Hi thanks for this detailed explanation ! But is this also neeeded for the MAN HX60?

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j-p-1 They first came into service in 2007 so had a version of the architecture on the TGA series so yes although 2007 was when the later TGS series was introduced. We certainly updated the ECUs on the ones on which we did correction or modification work.
      When a PTO was fitted or some petroleum regs mods were done the conversion file had to be updated to deliver the factory support to make it all work.

    Just in case you're not aware, you could probably get a few hundred quid for the cables and connectors in the back of the van, assuming you're going to strip them all out?
    IIRC the connectors alone are usually £30 - £70 a piece new

    At around 22:40 you were struggling to get the water cans out. They were most likely swollen due to the heat. If you’d open the lids and released the pressure they probably would have come out easier.

    Thank you so much for these videos, its kind of a dream of mine to convert a HX60. Whats your thoughts on doing something on the roof and access to it. What's your thoughts on designing some sort of fold out space on the roof of the box? I think you could still have solar pannels ect, but utilse the top of the box for another seating area or similar.

    • @projectoverland5264
      @projectoverland5264  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carl, thanks for the support and you're welcome. In answer to your question - I did think about it and a lift up roof (more like a pop roof than a Pangea lifting roof) was in there at the beginning but I gave up on when the reality of costs and complexities became a factor. I do have the ability to use the roof and to enter/exit and cross the roof from the cab to the rear and back again.

    I'm not sure if I saw you out driving on the A38 between Exeter and Ivybridge a month or so ago, I was going the other way and saw an orange military truck (at a glance)...I didn't get a good look to confirm anything in particular.

      Hi, yes all good. It may well have been me, just coming back from either the Overland show if it was late evening or having the alternator done. Lack of updates is I'm just busy IRL. However, I'm editing 1 of 2 if not 3 updates, because I have so much footage. Watch this space.

    • @projectoverland5264
      @projectoverland5264  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, the Falcon doesn't make a good conversion in my view. You pay a premium for the box on the back which is shorter than the bed, and shorter than human height. It has terrible thermal properties and it weighs a hecking lot. HX60 is a good base truck, but buy a flatbed and source/build a box. You will get a nicer habitat that way. Otherwise you compromise your build from the start. Hope that helps.

    It means he selling or what, is it secret how license or permission been to targets' eyes only? How to just live life normally, as the safety is common sense choice of someone on a journey. If accidents been from anger of long time to obtain "license" like losing something in life(experience of life permanent damage)?

    Do you always film in Narrow As your camera only ever frames a very little segment of your content. With respect and constructive feedback some learning on framing and shooting basic video as you could deliver a better quality of content and a better field of view

    • @projectoverland5264
      @projectoverland5264  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback, all helpful.
      When you say 'narrow' do mean portrait rather than landscape? It really depends on the device I am using to film with. In general I'm watching playback and editing with a Macbook Pro but I only use iMovie for editing. I'm looking at it during editing and thinking 'looks ok to me' (which isn't saying a lot because I am a total noob and no more than a point and shoot at best) - and it's not something anyone else has mentioned (although it's possible they haven't the knowledge you have) so without seeing it from your perspective, I'm not really sure what it is you are expecting to see or not see?
      It's an interesting point and maybe you can give me an idea by mentioning specific points that you think could be better, vs bits you think are ok and work for you? I can then get a better understanding of what you mean?
