Another reason to pull the calf away asap is supposedly the coating on the calf when consumed by the cow has a long term effects on weakening the joints.
Eric, excellent explanation regarding the calf mother relationship on a dairy farm. Your feeding of the calf reflects lots of practical knowledge of calves.
Nice to see the cross montbelliarde giving birth. Montbelliarde can have strong temperament, so you have to be carreful with the choice of the bull. I used to have 65 montbelliarde in France and try a few cross breeding with some red fresian. Take care.
I love watching you feed the new baby calf the milk, you're going to be doing that for awhile and I wish I could be doing that job. I should have been a farmer or so my wife says since I watch a lot of farming videos and thoroughly enjoy watching your channel.
Great video! Sweet seeing you bottle feed. Lovely shots from the drone. Always impressed with the great help you and your Dad have brought in. Thanks for the video!
I saw SaskDutchKid had some wheel bolts sheered off and he fixed that problem in the last video. I'm glad you are safe with the tire problem fixed, and nothing happened while driving it. I take my tires a lot more seriously later in life when I realized their importance. For cars it's important to keep tire pressure properly set. Rotation helps and watching for uneven wear.
It's such a relief when they understand how to drink out of a bottle right away. Every once in awhile you get a stubborn or dopey calf that just doesn't get it right away. We ran a small dairy (milked about 80 cows) as well as custom raised holstein heifers for other dairies, and also had a 40-60 cow beef herd. 2 specific breeds I remembered being frustrated with were brown swiss calves, and full blood Maine Anjou calves. The swiss were so stubborn to take a bottle, they'd about starve to death rather than eat. With alot of work they would finally get it. For the beef herd we had mostly great big Maine Anjou cows, always great growth rate, size, and maternal instincts. The calves were just so dopey they'd always have trouble finding a teat. We'd have to run the cow up in a head gate, and try to wrestle and push this 120lbs calf down under the bag and get it in their mouth, which was a feat in itself.
I enjoy your educational videos Eric…. I must admit I was extremely nervous seeing the handle left down on the Jack All. (Widow Maker) They are notorious for letting loose with the handle coming up with extreme force. Wishing you a nice rest of the week. Stay Safe.
In they early vidio's you were feeding the brewers grain. I saw one farm that uses that to put a small layer above the silage. Because the brewers grain is covered in plastic it doesn's spoil. And because of the "wet layer" above you will decrease spoilage enormously (and you will add up forage stock). Good luck with rationing!
We don't have milk cattle, just beef cattle, but it's pretty much the same thought. It's only if the cow can't nurse them, that's when we feed them colostrum, as soon as we can. We certainly want to feed them within 4 to 8 hours, if at all possible. I like those aerials, great view. Thanks for sharing, I hope you have a nice Friday and weekend ahead!
We use fly tape and we have on a wreel so when it's full of flies we cut it throw it away and unwind the next batch. We haven't tried montbelarde, but we tried lineback and we really like them. Heard good results on procross dairy cattle
with the flies in the calf barn idk if you guys are feeding grain and how much but adding clarify to the calf grain has worked well for us as well as Mr sticky roll which is just sticky rope that can hang in the barn but best to replace every other day
Hi Eric, the calf is very healthy and drank down the milk without a hassle. The corn is looking good, should make some great silage to fill up the bunkers next month. It would be good if someone come up with an organic supplement to give your cows and calves that would reduce the smell of their poo to keep the flies away. Thanks for your video. Chris from Australia 🇦🇺.
Yes but his vids aren’t as good. You never get to actually see a project from start to finish. Though these are getting to be the same. Much rather see 1 project then 7-8 clips of projects
love your site/videos...I got a hat a while back, one w/leather logo...let my students smell the leather..../most of these inner city school kids had never smelled leather...the way you/your father run/manage your operation is a credit to your trade...no daddy funded play time farming...like some you tubers...bug zappers, fly traps...
Hi Eric, I thought I’d offer a friendly observation and suggestion: you bought the robotic floor scrapers used, and I’m sure the guy before you had a reason to sell. I think you’d get a lot of help with a new system and then YOU can be the farm that sells the used units. Give yourselves a break with a new system and plan to recoup half that investment when you sell it used and buy another new system. You have plenty of other things to do than always repairing the scraper robots. 😊
The flys in the calf barn... do you have sauders adding clarifly to your calf feed? Also for the bottle calves you can get clarifly add packs to put in the milk coming out of the pasteurizer.
montbeliarde cows are know for being a bit wild here where I'm from. We tried a little bit of CrossBreeding but I'd never do it again. The udder fell off everyone of those animals and honestly you cannot beat a pedigree black and white
On our beef operation, we have found that if you throw a little hay silage (alfalfa) on top of our corn silage before we tarp it then we have little to no spoilage
Good video as always. How do you get rid of the spoilage? Just put it in a bucket and put it on the compost pile? The cows won't eat the spoilage, right? Would it spoil the surrounding feed?
If you don't mind me asking, what are the thoughts with trying the monty's? Are you liking to improve solids or add more hybrid vigour? In the UK PLI is the index some use to breed their cows but a worrying trend is narrow chest width with shallow bodies which I personally feel will lead to problems down the road. What index do you find useful when you breed your cows dwp, tpi or met merit dollars?
I have never heard of a weed commonly referred to as pickles. My sister and brother-in-law grow corn and soybeans in Iowa and they have never mentioned having a problem with it.
I work at a dairy farm here in California. First feeding of a calve here we hive her 1.5 litters of colostrum for the first 24 hour's....we give a second bottle of 1.5 litters of colostrum for the 48 hours after finally after the 3rd day we give her powder milk replacer....we have no issue's with scours, witch is a big issue when dealing with newborns
You know Eric, I don't know if those robots are worth it. Constant repairs, time you could use for other needs on the farm, and replacement parts all the time.
Isn't this the tractor that you shortened the steering bar.??Maybe it need adjusted. You did add a 1000 lbs to the front at the same time. Could be chewing up tires
I loved seeing the new baby heifer. I hope she grows up to be as good a “milk-maker” as she is a “milk-drinker”.
I sure hope the editing-ception will continue as a nice little running gag
Another reason to pull the calf away asap is supposedly the coating on the calf when consumed by the cow has a long term effects on weakening the joints.
Really? Never heard of that before.
Never heard of that before.
Thanks Eric. Love stopping in for a visit with you all. Cheers 🇨🇦
Hope your silage lasts until harvest. I know it wou0nt be fermented yet but it's something to feed.
Yeah thankfully the first silage we will harvest is a variety that feeds pretty well green.

The crops looked really clean. Looked pretty green as well must have been getting timely rains.

I fed so many calves as a kid too!
Great technique.
Enjoy the dairy content. Hope the crops turn out good this year for you. We are really short on hay here in KY this year.
Feeding baby calves is the best! Thanks for sharing your time. Love this channel 🥰

To bad Furadan is not available anymore. You could apply it at rates that gave protection for as long as you needed it. 1 pass could last 4 weeks.
Always lovely to watch your videos. What video editing program do you use?
He uses DaVinci Resolve.
I calved one of my Monty heifers just today too, a bull calf.
Do the cows just wait until the scraper comes by to crap on it? I can't believe how bad it gets so quickly!
Hey great job at the farm i was asking what do you use as bedding for your young calves?
1:29 oh that's Indian Company🇮🇳 BKT tyres
Did you repack the bearings when you change new tires? Just wondering ?

Pickle vine in the fall and chick weed in the spring.

We use golden malaron in our hog buildings for fly control works good but not as good as the yellow stuff that the government outlawed.
if you put a net in front of that fan it will catch and kills flies

Interested what montbeliarde bulls you used
Pickles.
Could you plz show us your dog dutchess? Or the brown dog Casey?
Just wondering how long you have to bottle feed the calves? Is it a while or do you train them to feed themselves pretty quickly?

Hey Eric, question, why are the dilds nor square in your area? Is there a reason?
You should put marks on the wall so you don't have to step off the bunkers.
