    It is for us still guys, who do not need 4K, but want a FF at a decent price.

    I did a quick check of several different shopping sites. The 6D Mark II is $1000 cheaper than the cheapest full frame camera that offers 4k. I think people are expecting to much for to little money.
    BTW, I am a Sony shooter. So, this camera doesn't really have an impact on me.

    So I was out in the middle of nowhere. Doing photography with my 6D but frustrated with the autofocus and low light capability. Also doing a little video with my 5D Mark II but not happy with the sensor. Also doing a little video with my 7D Mark II but frustrated that it did not do continuous autofocus during 1080 60fps. And wishing I had a tilty flippy touch to focus screen. Suddenly a brand new 6D Mark II dropped out of the sky. And SOLVED ALL MY PROBLEMS. Awesome. Thank you Canon.

    I have been playing with cameras for over 55 years from pentax and hasselblad and the 6dmk2 is the first one that satisfies all my needs or requirements. With nothing left over.

    After a lot of mumbling I went on and bought it. I'm interested in stills, I don't shoot video, and I come from an ancient 50D that served me well but started to make me feel "behind", especially in low light situations. I got it for 1100€, which is a fair price (the retail 2000€ was just too much, that is A73 territory!) and I think it was the best choice for what I do: I shoot mostly landscape and wildlife, so the original 6D AF would have been a little too basic for my needs. Also, the GPS is great for traveling, and the tilty screen would make shooting in live view much easier. It's an honest camera, at this price point, it gives you a lot of feature in a small body (much more tough and sealed than mirrorless ones). Really, its only downside is the cramped AF points in the middle, that is just a stupid decision

    As a stills photographer this is pretty much my perfect camera, so thank you Canon. Pity about the lack of dual card slots, but in ten years I have never experienced card failure. And thank you Gordon.

    To me, the canon 6D Mk ii so far looks like the camera to have as a secondary full frame body, if one has a higher end Canon DSLR such as the 5D Mk IV or 1D X Mk ii. It has many new features and benefits that lacks now in the higher end DSLRs, and that's a plus to me as long as one has any of the higher end camera.

  • @chrislj2890

    A very rational synopsis of this camera, without all of the angst and emotion over the lack of 4K video. I'm still interested in it, although I will wait for the price to drop a bit.

    I only shoot stills so no 4k is not a biggie for me. My only criticism would be that the focus points are not spread out enough. When I shoot portraits with an 85mm at f1.8 I do not want to have to focus and recompose if I'm fairly close to the subject as this may shift the focus plane. Being able to have the focus point on the eye and to just focus and shoot would be a huge plus for me. For me that's the biggest miss on this camera although 45 cross-type AF points is a substantial upgrade from the original 6D, which only has the centre point as cross-type.

    • @AnthonyMC67
      @AnthonyMC67 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am with you on that...my only gripe is focus points spread and not having a second memory card slot. Since I am not into videos not having 4k is not a big deal and I will still get the camera. I do understand other peoples' disenchantment since they probably had very high expectations for the new 6D. But if the had put 4k in it it would compete too well with 5D4.

    I just purchased a 6D2 with Canon BG-21 battery grip, extra Canon Battery, 64GB SanDisk memory card and a Canon Pixma Pro 100 printer with 50 sheets of 11x13 paper for $1349 (USD) after rebate. I can easily sell the printer and paper for a hundred or two hundred dollars which would really bring the price down but, I think I will keep it and sell my older Pixma Pro 9000 Mark ii for fifty bucks or so...

    4K is literally expensive. You need to consider you need a camera with 4K, a tv or screen with 4K. External hard rive big enough for a lot 4K videos. Higher end computer for faster operations that can compress 4K easily...

      Joost Hoedjes I'd put money on it that image quality is noticeably better on the 6DII. If you 'genuinely' shoot video I get your point. If you don't and youre not an action/sports photographer then I can't see your point. I'll take IQ and better ergonomics any day of the week.

    Great informative vid Gordon, I think all brand in any market do this, slowly upgrade even-do they could do it in one step,, but , like audio and computers , models have to become out dated, only Canon is messy about it because they have so many models and difference is meanly stripping lower priced one of functions , so if continuously doing this tactic then people run the risk of buying a cat in a bag !! So with Canon i study the whole product line wait till the price gone down (and still looks great comparing with the other models , and look what fits my needs , >video

    May I make a suggestion for all the haters? Hire the camera for 1 week, if you don't like it, then its no great loss. BUT, if you take the camera out and do some astrophotography with it, I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Maybe do a 4k timelapse while you're at it?
    Think about it, 1/180 sync speed, 1/4000 shutter speed, no headphone jack, no 4k video 40000 native ISO. This is primarily an astro/nightscape camera, if Canon marketed it this way, we wouldn't have all this whinging.

    I am learning photography right now. I started with a T6i, and now have a 6D MKii. The familiarity with the Canon system, the lenses I already have, and the fully articulating screen are what got me to buy the 6D MKii. The 5D MKiv would have been great if not for the rear screen. Being disabled I like being able to use live view at lower angles that I just can't get with those fixed screens.

    Leaving out 4K of a $2K camera in 2017 is bananas. Can't wait for a fullframe mirrorless camera to arrive with GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, flippy screen, eye focus and compatibility with Sigma's brilliant lenses.

  • @basilbcf
    @basilbcf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very disappointed that Canon did not spread the AF points out a bit more rather than just transferring the AF system from the crop-sensor 80D. Now, on this FF all the AF points are jammed into the center portion of the frame. So, for example, if you want to use rule of thirds and have, say, a model's eye at the upper right 2/3 cross point, you will still have to focus and recompose. They should have at least spread the points out a bit so that AF at the rule of thirds points would still be possible without the need to re-compose after focus. It's not a deal killer but come on Canon!

    I'm just aiming for an 80D... but for those who want to go for a FF in this price range without 4K, it's no sense, unless you don't want video at all.

  • @stevenwaldstein2249

    Gordon, I enjoy your detailed reviews but for the 6DII reviewers seem much more enamored with 4K video than they are with Full frame capability. I never see you guys give negative or disparaging remarks when the m43 or APS-C manufactures leave out full frame but offer 4K. At $2000 US I don't know of a single camera that offers both FF and 4K. You can't have both, at least not yet, even from Sony. Now I am not a Canon fan boy but I do shoot wth both Canon and Sony and own several of each and if your a Landscape and or Architectural or IQ based photographer and not a videographer they probably are happy someone makes a camera for them. TH-cam reviewers value 4K more so it appears that is pushed into every review as a negative where 4K is not provided. Is that really fair and balanced? I'll look for your next Olympus, Fuji, and Panasonic review where you say "but its not full frame". Then I will know it has become a level playing field.
    Keep your reviews coming.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right, there's no full-framer with 4k for $2000 - YET! I would be surprised if Sony doesn't revamp its A7 series this year, bringing 4k to the lower cost models. The thing is, a camera like the 6D will have a shelf life of 3 to 4 years, so you have to think about not having 4k in 2020 or 2021. I think it'll look a bit old fashioned by then. But yes you're right, you're watching reviews made by people who care a LOT about video - after all, they post video reviews here on YT! You'll find when the more traditional camera publications get hold of it, they'll be more forgiving about the lack of 4k as it's not that important to them. But they will - or should - complain about the lack of twin card slots. As for me, I fall between both camps, so i have to point out all the pros and cons.

    • @stevenwaldstein2249
      @stevenwaldstein2249 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the next Sony A7III will be interesting if it has 4K but no Type II card or best in class touch screen or fully articulating screen or no GPS and still poor ergonomics. I'm told they will have a much better AF system. I sold my A7II once I got my A7RII because there was no comparison between the two AF systems.
      I've really learned to love the touch screen on my 5D Mk IV and when looking at what Sony did on the A6500 is a joke and for me (being left eyed) more problem than its worth. For me a camera is much more than just 4K and I think the 6D II will probably still sell well. Could it have been better, yes. What would they have to take out to keep the price and add 4K.? Any opinion?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm looking forward to Sony's next generation of cameras. The A9 is so much nicer to use than the A7 Mark II series, so i hope a lot of it makes it into the next A7 models.

    I've been watching/reading about the 6D Mark ll, 77D and 80D because I'm going to retire my 60D. While you mention the 2 main issues most other complain about the 6D Mk2 I appreciate how you actually talk about them with a no-nonsense attitude. I am not into video so the 4K thing is not a deterrent and don't see the value for 2 memory card slots for what I do.
    I am 100% with your comment about people wanting everything in a FF for "cheap", I think the ÜBER/Airbnb mentality is permeating anything, even cameras.

    As a loyal canon user, I have about 6 Canon L lenses, and a few EF lenses and 3 EFS lenses when I started with the 7D.
    But since there has been nothing competitive since the 5D3, I havent bought anything new from Canon. Im heavily invested in their system, and I recently bought a 5D3, but only second hand and feel I do not have to support a company that does not support its Enthusiast / Part time Professionals. Sure the new 6D ticks the boxes for so many, but when I cannot afford to leave canon's lenses but if I do its cheaper to move to another brand, the best of both worlds is to stay in Canon, buy second hand and vote with my dollars.

  • @viajer2011

    Canon should clean their line up of cameras. Few years it was very clean with the entry level rebel series, mid-level xxD series, the 5D and 1D for pros. Nowadays Canon have all those in between cameras that are just giving a little extra than the previous model in the line up. It is unbelievable that my 80D has the mic jack but the 6D does not to protect the 5D....or Canon put Bluetooth in the new 200D but my 80D does not have it....I think that the 80D is the last Canon camera I will ever get....when the time is right, I will sell it and I am done with canon's cameras. The marketing philosophy is pure garbage.

    Hi Gordon,
    Could you please tell me your thoughts on the 5D MK4 Verses the 6D MK2..¿?
    I really loved the 5DMK3 for portrait shooting.
    My priorities are:
    - Portrait/Fashion/Lifestyle
    - Video VLogging C Neistat style
    etc.
    Things of importance:
    - Dual Pix Focus
    - Articulating screen (However, with the 5D4, couldn’t you just use the Canon app on a smart phone and attach that to your gimbal or is a small vid display??) any latency issues?
    I don’t know :((
    Was really hoping the 6D2 would have 4K..
    Trying to figure out the best route to go to purchase..
    Thanku so very much!!
    Great work btw!!

  • @douggottlieb
    @douggottlieb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Gordon: dual pixel seems like a good indicator of AF capabilities of using current EF glass on a rumored FF Canon mirrorless. Is that fair? And if so, in that context, think an EF FF mirrorless is a viable A7 competitor?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would definitely say the performance for photos, video and AF in live view on the current FF models, like the 6D II and 5D4, are 100% indicative of the performance you could expect from a full-frame mirrorless - when fitted with EF lenses anyway. And it would be as good or maybe even a little better with native full-frame EF-M lenses if they went down that route. I think it could be a great move for Canon, but they don't seem in any hurry to do it.

    • @douggottlieb
      @douggottlieb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gordon Laing Thanks Gordon! I guess they're happy with their market share and don't feel threatened by Sony, Fuji, Oly, or Pany. I've held on to my Canon glass, hoping to own a FF EF mirrorless. I won't be buying a 5 or 6D, however. I'll see how it performs on a A7m3 later in the year.

    After such a long wait I believe Canon shooters deserved better than that ! Let's face it , the message from Canon is clear : Its DSLR's line is made for those who shoot stills primarily. When the 5D Mark IV was released it was obvious that Canon made a move to protect its cinema line (heavy cropped 4k and unusable codec) and I encourage video shooters to look within the C series . Selling the 6D Mark II for $2000 with such old tech (except for the focus system) is a big let down when we know that the Nikon D750 released 3 years ago has the same feature and comes with a built in cinema profile like the D810 and cost 600$ less and has dual SD card slots ! The Nikon D810 (36mgpxl) perfect for stills and video with dual card slots cost just 300$ more than the Canon 6D Mark II... Wrong move from Canon ! Love my Nikons !

      Found it for $2800 which considering the camera is not a bad price. Nevertheless it is an older camera that is just about to get replaced. Not even mentioning what it would cost to replace quality glass. My personal experience with the 6D is great as long as you don't expect it to behave like a 1Dxii or a D500. The image quality is so beautiful that I have barely seen any other systems of equal or lesser money match. I would imagine the new 6Dii will be even better with the higher megapixel count and new sensor.

    Canon and Nikon are still living in 2006 when they had the full marked for themselves. Why don't they follow the example of Fuji? They put 90% of the features of the X-T2 in the X-T20. Draw people to you system and eventually they will upgrade anyway, or not, but at least you bound them to your system. Canon is making a huge mistake, no 4K, really?

      Why is that relevant and what's your point? I was talking about Fuji as an example of their strategy. You can put 4K in a cheaper body. Besides every cheap mobile phone has 4K these days and you tell me they can not put it in a body of $2000!? That's just a load of bs. At the replacement rate Canon replaces their FF camera's, 4K is already on all major consumer devices in a couple of years (even before a replacement of the 6D mark II shows up), but your $2000 body, can not do it. A bit strange isn't it?

    The camera seems to be quite good, but is 4K really that big a deal , I went to a Fuji XT2 event which has 4K & neither the ambassador or Fuji users present ever use the video at all.

      The only difference in quality between 4K and 1080p is when you crop in 200%, otherwise you can't tell the difference. These 4K fanatics have fallen for the hype.

      Most of the people who screaming "no 4k!" drama are not even using it themself. They just want a reason to bash on canon.
      Sony did exactly the same with their A7 series.. A7ii didnt have 4k but sony a7Sii/Rii had. They simply wanted to offer a cheap FF option without hurting their more advanced options

    The flip screen on the Canon 6D Mark II is great. It's not only a valuable feature for video it's a valuable feature for stills photography as well. I hope Canon puts that feature on more of their DSLRs. Too bad they dropped the ball in other areas. Oh well, hybrid users will look elsewhere and when Canon loses enough business they will hopefully change their ways.

  • @JesusChristIsLord__

    Agree with the 4K; they should have included it since even smart phones have 4K now. Personally, I don't shoot videos, so it's no big deal for me. (I'm an old timer from the film days.) But for most (?) people, video, particularly 4K video, is a must.

  • @johnhaynes9910
    @johnhaynes9910 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A further thought which is a bit of fun too. My view is that the 6D MkII is primarily a stills camera and there are better options for shooting 4k but I would go further than that because I think shooting RAW video is way better than 4k, it also requires a heck of a lot more effort but get it right and its brilliant. Although a family holiday shoot, if you haven't seen it, check the following out, Magic Lantern RAW video shot on the original 6D, its an achievement : th-cam.com/video/ARhuUCsGfbc/w-d-xo.html

  • @daycreek

    Thanks for the review Gordon! Even if Canon did include 4k with the 6D Mark II, they would more than likely screw it up by only giving you the option to shoot in MJPEG. I have not completely gotten away from Canon since I have a major investment in their lenses but I doubt I will buy another Canon camera until they make up major policy shift and embrace high quality 4k features on their DSLR's. Such a shame since their autofocus technology is so good. I love the GH5 for video and that is primarily what I use nowadays.

    I do think the 6.5 fps is heavily improved for action /sports. It is a great do-everything camera, however, maybe just get a used 1D series for the same or less $$? If I could pay $500 with trade-in on my 6D, I would get this. For $2000 (6dm1 is worth about $900 used. $1100 upgrade), I will wait. 4k in timelapse ONLY is also a bit of a slap, isn't it?

  • @elgandahc
    @elgandahc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoyed this review. 4K isn't that important to me, frankly, and the articulating screen is a huge plus on a Canon full-frame. This could be the right upgrade for me from my 70D.
    However, you say there is "no chance" of any slow motion video with the 6D MkII right after saying it shoots 1080p at 60 fps. Isn't that Full HD slo-mo? What do you mean by "no chance"? Admittedly, my iPhone shoots 240 fps, but no one expects that on any DSLR. So please explain. Thanks.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on your timeline. if your project is 24fps, then filming at 60p will give you a 2.5x slowdown. Or 2x if going from, say, 60p to 30p or 50p to 25p. But that's not really much of a slowdown. You really want 4x or more, which means having 100fps or faster...

    I don't care that it doesn't have a 4K output. If the camera can do it, possibly Magic Lantern will put it.
    But they screwed up the AF system! The thing that allows us to focus when taking photos! WITH A DSLR!
    No headphone jack? don't care. no 4K? same. But screwing up the AF system in a dSLR? It doesn't matter if they are more sophisticated when you can't compose/track a subject with the edges. If things are moving fast you can't do a focus lock then recompose. Which makes the 6fps kinda moot.

  • @milkteaTreadway
    @milkteaTreadway 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The videos are recorded in MJPEG, which gives you very large file size an not portable. Canon needs to learn from others how to compress videos using H.265 codec. Both the EOS 1D X and 5D Mk iv doesn't have H.265 compression either. Canon is simply way behind its competitors in this area.

    I have had Canon camera's for almost 30 years. I have the old 6D and have been eagerly waiting for the MkII.
    But the lack of 4K really is a dealbreaker. I don't want the 5D: I want a 4K full frame with a swivel or at least a tilting lcd panel.
    So I really am going to consider if I want to continue with Canon....

    As ever Gordon, great review and if I may, I would like to pose a question but first a small background, I do shoot Canon but also have a Lumix G80 which I mainly use for 4K video. Looking at the various comments, most bemoan the lack of 4k as a 'deal breaker' although I would consider a bigger omission the lack of dual card slots. If this camera had 4k would the people who bemoan that it is missing, actually buy a 6D MkII ? I suggest not because it is really a stills camera with limited video capabilities, if video is your main thing there are other far better choices than this including cheap and now fairly decent 4k video cameras designed for the purpose.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends what you want from a camera... personally I think it would be received better if it had dual slots OR 4k, even better with both, but just one of them would have resolved a lot of complaints. After all, Nikon offered dual slots back on the D600...

    Great video Gordon and yes, I agree with you. Canon should build as many features as they can into each new model. Their priority is clearly to preserve their product line as they see it, rather than pleasing the consumer. Buying a Canon camera (and maybe a whole system) rather than a rival's is obviously a win for Canon regardless of the model. Unfortunately Canon can't see that.

  • @tomscott4438

    Decent specs... three years ago. I see this appealing to existing 6D shooters or Canon users/fanboys who want FF and don't have the cash for a 5DmkIV. 4K isn't important to me, but it is to just about everyone else. What's really disappointing is single UHS I, and missing camera features designed to protect the 5DmkIV and missing video features to protect the Cine line. With all the other cameras available in this price range (Fuji X-T2, Sony A7R, Nikon D-750) offering more for the same or slightly less money, I can't see this camera creating any converts to Canon. This one's a head scratcher for me. BTW, really nice video. Compact, concise, too the point, and all in just over 10 minutes. Thank you.

    • @MikedieONE
      @MikedieONE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What does the D750 offers more? it doesnt even have a touchscreen or articulating screen, nor 4k.
      A7R doesnt have 4k either and no touchscreen nor articulating screen... and focus system sucks.
      Fuji X-T2 is a cropsensor camera and a totally different line not competing with the 6D series.
      Dual Pixel af alone is worth the upgrade already.

    Congratulations. Another helpful review.
    Bluetooth has inherently very low data speed but is very very convenient for the transfer of a few jpeg photos.
    Sony still sells new the a7 full frame camera body at 1000$ which is a bargain. Canon should do the same with new Canon 6D mark II.
    Canon was the first in 2003 to sell an APS-C dSLRs below 1000$. Sony has raised the bar and succeeded that with the full frame a7.
    I think that Canon should do the same with the Canon 6D.

It's a big camera, you can easily have dual SD slot, and come on ! UHS I ???? in 2017 No 4k ??????? even a Lumix G7 offers it... not to mention OVF, no IBIS, no AF joystick which you don't want to back when you've tasted it. If you want Full Frame and 4K pay $700 more (today) for an A7RII. That is the only 4K FF body out there.
      I guess every want 4K and not IQ. For me that is not the trade-off I would make. I would either spend more and get both or settle for HD only and get FF. Might not be what you want but there are those non-videographers that are OK with it.

    • @BokehMarket
      @BokehMarket 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue with this is if you're willing to settle for 1080p video, then there are considerably more options that compete with Canon. An A7 II can be had used for $1000 cheaper than this and probably has cleaner video. 4 years and beyond the DPAF, the changes are all incremental? Canon is acting as if they have no competition, when in reality it's the opposite.

    • @StreetsOfVancouverChannel

      The A9, A99II, A7SII, & A7RII are all full-frame 4K video capable (and the original A7S can capture 4K to an external 4K recorder via the HDMI port).
      Additional Sony cameras capable of 4K video capture: RX100IV, RX100V, RX10 II, RX10 III, A6300, and the A6500.

      @stevenwaldstein2249 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only compare B&H pricing so at $1698 the A7II is cheaper but it does not have a touch screen or a full articulating screen and or the dual pixel auto focus. Its not $1000 cheaper new at a reputable camera store. Not defending canon but each one of us have specific things we want and we discount all the other improvement should some how come for free. Like GPS, BT, NFC

    It's better to cannibalise your own sales than have the competition eat it up. We all agree with that. The only problem is that Canon has enough lead to not have to worry about it until a couple more generations of cameras. They are confident that all they have it under control and it is probably true. Can't blame Canon, but you are right it is a dangerous move. I think a swivel touch screen sony a7iii will give Canon a run for their money.

    The good features of the Canon 6D mk II can be had in the T7i, 77D and 80D. There is no compelling reason to upgrade from these unless you want to spend a lot more money.
    Comparing the 6D mk II to the 5 year old 6D is pointless. Of course, this 2017 camera is better than the 2012 version. Canon should be trying to outperform the competitors' 2017 cameras. Sadly, they continue to disappoint!!!!

      "outperforme" in what regards? Its a entry level FF cam. there is no other under 2000$ FF option with 4k.
      The only FF with fully articulating screen is the Sony A99(ii) which is way more expensive. None of them have dual pixel AF.
