I believe its because he wasnt "edgy" enough and he was in a revolving door kinda band. (Starship changed and mutated for like 20+years) And finally, critics, in his last years, think he sold out and strayed away from Starship's roots.
Im not saying I agree with this, its just an opinion as to whty he doesnt get credit for one of the best rock vocalist of all time.

Only on MTV, but that's an entirely different animal. Good to see this again though, it's been too long......almost 43 years!! 😊

Yes....People often toss around the term 'underrated' to strengthen an argument when it's unwarranted....In the case of Aynsley Dunbar, though, it is without question a legit statement of fact....One of the greatest, and most prolific drummers in rock history, and yet if mention him to many, drummers even, you will get the tilted head, quizzical look.

My son has taken after singing like I did in my 20s, he's in school choir and does solos and all of that. Just a few days ago I told him to pull this song up on Spotify. He'd never heard of this song so it was my duty to turn him onto another great song. I never knew Ansley Dunbar played on this song. That man played with everybody, he should be in the rock n roll hall of fame ffs. My son was blown away by Mickey's vocals. Next on the play list was "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop that Mickey sang on as well. Guy is an incredible singer. Grace Slick had great rock vocals as well and happened to write some killer songs herself. Totally deserved a long career in music.

Steve Perry. I saw both. Jefferson Starship New Year’s Eve at the Cow palace 82-83. Dunbar twirling his sticks in between beets, Mickey in voice, Craig hitting every not as played on the album. The whole band was on fire! Then a year or so later at Day On The Green (Bill Graham Productions) I saw Journey. Steve came out and said, “We just got back from our world tour, and it’s so great to be back in the Bay Area, if you guys want us to play all night we will!” I kid not, they played for 3 and a half hours, and Steve hit every high and every low. Phenomenal show! I feel privileged to have seen SO much great rock and roll talent back in the 80’s. Perhaps Steve’s range was a little more dynamic? Either way both Steve and Mickey, equally great.

He played in my group at one mate. I had him, a bloke named Ronnie on bass and a prancing poppet called Rod on vocals at one time.

On this day in 1983 {March 19th} Jefferson Starship performed "Jane" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand'...
Four years earlier on 1979 it peaked at #14 on the Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart...
It was the first release with Starship's new lead singer, Mickey Thomas...
    R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...

I saw this episode of "Fridays" when it originally aired in 1981. I watched it regularly because I was in lust with Melanie Chartoff. This is such a cool song. Aynsley Dunbar was/is one of my favourite drummers...reminds me a lot of the late Cozy Powell.

At the end when the folks from the house band walked over to sing and jam along with the band was the best part. Those are the kind of spur of the moment happenings that make TV performances like this something special.
