Hong Kong lawmakers and a sports industry leader have demanded authorities recover funds they provided for a high-profile football match that disappointed tens of thousands of fans and undermined the city’s status as an events hub. The events included a February 4, 2024, exhibition match where Inter Miami star Lionel Messi never took the field. Post Sports Editor Joshua Ball tries to unpack what we know about why the world-famous footballer travelled to Hong Kong without playing and what repercussions might lie ahead after the incident.

not only staying on the bench, Messi and Inter Miami didnt even try to greet and interact with the audience. Messi stayed at the corner at all time, even hide behind his teammates in the ceremony. we truly felt we were being ignored
Is not his fault he didn't play or the situation was communicated badly
agree, and disagree with the journalist about it not being Messi's fault - sure not his fault if he was injured, but how he reacted was something he could control, like even smiling or going around for ONE MINUTE round the stadium would have be better than nothing and might have made a small difference in the anger index. And also disagree about this being over-hyped making it all about Messi - so if Federer were to come to Hong Kong at his peak and the organisers should not actually "sell" that he is coming, surely it is really all about him and people want to see him. Same here, people want to see Messi, sure Suarez too but Messi is the GOAT. So disagree about it now being the fault of the hype, next we would say it is the fans' fault for experiencing angry emotions. Interesting logic!

This is no poor communication it is a marketing strategy to entice the people to come and watch the game despite the high ticket price
This is a very bad strategy then because that organization can only scam people once. No one will trust them in the future. There is no forward thinking at all. I guess a lot of people knew Messi was injured, but still hoped that he could play a few minutes. If there was no intention of that, the organization should have announced it beforehand. I thought the crowd was pretty controlled, to be honest. They could have done a lot more "damage" than just booing and kicked off Messi's picture "head".

Just saw it on TV, Lionel Messi said he wants to comeback and play in HK. He probably don’t understand that “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”.
Lol you say that, but the truth it, Chinese fans will still go and pay to see him. 10,000 fans are mad he didn't wave to them? Fine. Out of 1.5 billion people in China, another 10,000 will absolutely pay. Messi is still more famous than any Chinese athlete ever will be 😂
@@jtomyhope575. Messi is more famous than Yao Ming? Messy will retire soon, he will never has another chance to step on a football field in china/HK again.
Messi is FAR more famous than Yao Ming, even at his peak, get a grip please. The sport is more popular and he is a much bigger star in it. What planet are you on LOL@@Goodfellow1234567
@@Goodfellow1234567 Who's Yao Ming? Messy literally does not care if he ever goes to China or HK again. Why should he? There are much better countries to play, and he has plenty of options. Seriously, how arrogant you are. China is a corrupted and polluted country. Messi is better never going back again.
china already cancelled march competition messi in hang zhou, he cant step in china again
Greedy organizer should be responsible for this and not Inter Miami or Messi. Although the club takes a cut from the profit, organizers should not over promised the fans.
Well, the contract says he needs to play at least 45 mins unless injury, so was he really injured?
He played in Japan two days later! ! !He said he was injured on the platform in China. But why is it getting better so fast?
Same thing in Malaysia years ago when Messi visited with his Barcelona teammates. A shame because fans also had to pay. Most went because they wanted to watch Messi play. They were scammed instead.
Messi claimed the grass was so bad he wasnt gonna risk it, hence he didn't want to play when he was in Msia. His feet worth millions.
These sports organizations had sure left a huge Messi stain on their reputation
Dia memang sudah ternoda
That’s a messy situation 😂
If the ticket buyers aren't refunded 200% of the paid ticket price, there is no justice in the world.
Why should they be refunded, they got to see Taylor, Sunderland and Gressel play lol😂
200%?
they don't blame him for his potential injury. It is so disappointed for what he does to his 40 thousand loyal fans.
But you see how strong respect can be, cause nobody was throwing shirts with his name on. RESPECT
Glad I don’t go to these sporting events . Waste of time and money . Better of putting it towards a nice holiday .
The takeaway is not to spend so much on this kinda "friendly games" but to travel to the legit league matches
High difference...
Messi is a talented player no doubt but C.Ronaldo can be a lot more than that, a great example not only because of his talents but attitude as well
facto😂😂😂, more love for CR7 now
of course yes
of course you cannot blame them, they paid alot of money just to watch that star in the bench😢😢😢😢
Money? How about Time? It’s not easy for a ticket 🎫

Typical Clueless people on Internet..... Injured people should never play football during Injury....
@@Vladimirputin11111 then why would he still say "to play this game in Hong Kong" before coming

Cant blame the fans. Being lied to will have a massive backlash.
So what will happen when the Chinese realize that the CCP has been lying to them their entire lives?
Here in America, $600 is a lot for a ticket. Can you imagine for people in China? They have to save up months for this. They should be at least offered compensation in some way whether it’s tickets refund or a ticket to another game.
Not really... Do you even know how much it costs to live in HK?
It’s Hong Kong not mainland China, do you know that HK is one of the most expensive cities in the world?
@@Kiyooneminimum wage in HK just above HKD$30. I’m from the UK, which is below £4 an hr.
@@Kathyyy1218according to their minimum wage it can cost up to half of their monthly salary
We are in 2024. The average salary in china is around 5-6 dolars per hour, and high tier cities even more. Not to mention HK, its quite higher that the average.
he had injury and he can't play, I can understand, but not waving hand to his fans? or he suffer hand injury, too?
According to the organizer's statement, it's Inter Miami CF decided not to let Messi on due to injury, whether or not it is true we will see in Japan.
now we know it is fake
Jonathan wong is spitting facts. The organisers and david beckham SHOULD be ashamed.
David Beckham lost control to Messi's team
I was there. Intermiami didn't tell the audience that Messi will not play until the last couple of minutes, the commentary of the game even told us that Messi would eventually play the game. Everyone there spent more than 3000 hongkong dollar to watch his game.He was sitting there and did nothing for the whole game. He did nothing but ignoring all the Fans and sitting on the bench. He even refuse to shake hand with the person from HK government. What he replied is that his body condition was fine but feeling a bit uncomfortable .I don't really think people will troll on him if he can actually show some attitude or respect to his fans.
Money taken but sorry I’m injured cannot play 😂
then smile in Japan and played happily😅😅😅🤮🤮🤮🤡🤡🤡
not to mention the fact that the ticket price is more than the avg monthly wages in china
As such a big public figure, Messi really made a bad move in HK. Regardless of the reason, he shouldn't have been black faced from the time he landed. You don't disrespect the place you were paid a lot of money to be played and disappoint your fans / supporters!! How can you don't play, act like you don't care and don't even explain yourself to your fans. Poor handling. Proves that he's just thinking about himself. His fans means nothing to him! He has so much money already he doesn't care anymore!!
And NO APOLOGY
We had similar incident with Ronaldo in S.Korea when he was playing for Juventus. Thankfully he rewarded more than all the debts during the last WC 😂
I'm from Hong Kong and i hate Messi.
at first i thought it was not Messi fault but an organizational fault. but his negligence to connect and create sympathy with the Hong Kong fans is definitely his fault. a smile and a wave to the fans is not much too ask from a multimillion dollar earning player. this was not a real match but an exhibition match which basically is just a fan.meeting but now without the meeting, so ofcourse fan.s are dissapointed...
then he played in Japan and show his smile to his Japan fans😂😂😂, what a magical recovery of body and mental, now i understand why Paris fans don't like him, full of hypocrisy.😅😅😅
In a display of what can only be described as an exquisite disregard for the sanctity of fan expectations, the management of Inter Miami CF orchestrated a masterclass in silence. One might have naively presumed that a brief communiqué would have been dispatched to inform the eager masses that Messi, the pied piper of football, would not grace the pitch due to injury. Unfortunately, the team didn't bother with such niceties, leaving fans hanging in a way that even a suspense master like Hitchcock couldn't have imagined.
Let us not dally around the uncomfortable truth; the throngs of spectators were there for the Messi spectacle, not the local attractions of Inter Miami CF or the Hong Kong team, however charming they may be. This silence, this omission, speaks volumes of the managerial acumen-or, more pointedly, the lack thereof-encompassing the coach, the illustrious Beckham, and Messi himself.
To draw a parallel, Cristiano Ronaldo, the paragon of professionalism, recently cancelled an exhibition match in Shenzhen, China, citing 'health reasons'. A model of transparency and integrity, the organisers and Cristiano Ronaldo not only offered refunds but also delivered a heartfelt apology in person. The result? Disappointment, naturally, yet couched in a blanket of respect and admiration for his forthrightness.
One wonders if the luminaries at Inter Miami might take a leaf out of Ronaldo's book, or if they prefer to author their own chapters of how to fan the flames of fan disenchantment.
1:20 am I the only one who was impressed by that clean kick
this disrespect will never be forgotten
It's not disrespect at all
This is not the first time, eh? ask our friends in Indonesia and Singapore... 😂
I feel sorry for the young fans. Thought messi was one of the nice guys, how rude for a player of his calibe to not even engage with his young fans. disappointing.
CR7 at least say sorry directly to his fans for not being able attend the match and show his smile and responsibility to all fans, while Messi only smile for Japan fans and played for them, I now understand why Paris fans also no like him, not for losing game, but the full of hypocrisy😂😂😂
Lionel messi is not a sportman to be respect off. His fame is nothing compare to ronaldo. The same indonesian football assosiation who pay the argentian to have friendly match to indonesia but messi rather take a vacation off. Fifa shold not make him the golden boy. its not worth it
我以为指责和唾弃梅西的只有我们中国人,没想到外国人也对这种事情感到十分厌恶
中国人が外人のふりしてんだろ😂哀れだなお前
Messi let his fans down. We should no longer support Messi. Stop buying anything Messi.
Look, athletes get injured and cannot play, we get that. But to not address the fans, not make any speach, not be there at the cup ceremony, and not be there the next day for the fan autograph, which is not acceptable.
Michel Lamunière, CEO of tatler Asia is the man to blame here, but he's too much of a manchild to apologize, especially when the typical French arrogance kicked in.
He’s already apologized - the only real party to blame is the club for not fulfilling obligations.
Well, arrogance is a French trait, constantly activated 24/7. The typical French is always arrogant even if they aren't triggered
An apology is not enough. They need to give at least partial refund
@@onlydbrasko ask Inter Miami to forego over half of the payments due to them to refund the people. That was the only party responsible for all of this unfortunately. Ask David Beckham to cough it up since he has all the money in the world to do so.
Organizers actually did all they could to make it a spectacle and hype it up, it was the club who disappointed everyone and failed in their contractual obligations.
messi's mouth and tough were injured? that's why he refused to say hi to fans?
Yeah, sure, he gets injured. But he should at least interact with the fans instead of being soo cold. And After three days, he went to Japan for an interview where he said he was not injured; he just didn't feel like playing and played for half an hour.
The point here is - Was messy required to play ? Didn’t his contract not say he has to play certain minutes unless injured? But …
( 1) was Messy injured? (2) why no interaction with fans . (3) why no announcements? (4) why did Messy make his announcement in Japan? (5) Messy used to smile a lot, what happened to him in HK that kept him smileless? Messi wasn’t like this in other countries? Just why? Was this solely to upset HK?
Same stories with Cristiano Ronaldo didn't play when Real Madrid visiting South Korea few years ago.
At that time Ronaldo wasn't in Real Madrid anymore, no wonder you mixed all the facts.
