- TikTok's Singaporean CEO Chew Shou Zi was grilled about his ties with China during a Congress session about the dangers children face on social media platforms on Wednesday (Jan 31). A US senator repeatedly asked Mr Chew if he had ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party, to which he responded, "Senator, I'm Singaporean. No."

Well not really. Why? Does serving in your nation mean you are loyal? Where is the evidence for that? Plenty of American servicemen have betrayed the US. Not disrespectful at all. Is serving in the military somehow honorable when you are getting paid during peacetime? Oh wait Americans have a privilege that’s called a voluntary force. In Singapore, it’s mandatory conscription. @Nal1 Let me say it again and please pay attention: In countries that don't allow dual citizenship, they may have special provisions for people of special importance. For example, China's Eileen Gu. Moreover, Taiwan also doesn't allow dual citizenship for naturalised foreigners, but if you are of special contribution, you are allowed to keep.your original nationality.
So, let me ask you, are you sure Singapore doesn't have this kind of provision for some important people? Are you sure Zhou is not eligible for this special treatment? I bet you don't know. Neither does the senator, that's why he has to ask! (I bet he doesn't even know Singapore doesn't allow dual citizenship.)
Get it?
Senator forgot to ask: but why do you look chinese to someone so narrow minded like myself??!!!
exactly. this is essentially the issue
Actually.. I hate to kinda impose, buuuut the questions were valid. The issue is the senator is an idiot at saying it. The CEO isn’t off the hook
@@coolsceegaming6178in what way were those valid questions?
@@theaconite1400he is overthinking it to the point where he is starting to rationalize what the senator is saying 😂
Senator Cotton looks like polyester 🤔
I heard of this video from the soundtrack on tiktok.
They used to bring Lee Kwua Yew for a speech back in the 80s. What happened now?
It reeks of racism, xenophobia, poor geographic knowledge, and condescension. I'm glad that Shou Zi stood up to these irrational questions with dignity and gravitas befitting of a Singaporean.
Not at all. Geez Walter, you sound your age mate. Maybe go and touch some grass.
Just a typical American politician. They're really anxious and paranoid nowadays.
u nailed it right, dude
@@mightyhabib1182 do you mean an adult as opposed to how America behaves like a deeply insecure teenage girl? "Oh my god......do you have ties to China? China China China.." lol. Good grief the degree to which China lives rent free in America's head is hilarious.
Sooooo...are you Chinese or Japanese?
LOL, he should probably have mentioned that Singaporean adults cannot have dual citizenship, unlike USA. Minors under 21 can, but must renounce the other to retain Singapore citizenship. I suspect the senator doesn't realise that?
No point….These senators would just shush him if he was to explain further
well then, if dual nationality is permitted in the US and the senator being more familiar with whats permitted in his own very fine nation, the senator should have asked that first
I doubt the senator knows where Singapore is, he's american remember
Lol. I bet the furthest he traveled is Mexico.
Most American can only speak one language and I bet most of them will fail the citizenship test. Ms. Randhawa is a clear example when asked about the civil war. Some of Congress members do not know that the Constitution has been amended not once, twice but 27 times (last being on Congressional Compensation). Do you think this bozo know anything about Singapore? He probably has a hard time pointing to where Singapore is on the map
Even though I don't adore the app, I really adored this guy
did he say he is from Sri Lanka?
As an American with Singaporean family, I'd like to offer a full and unqualified apology on behalf of the United States to Singapore.
Are you in any way, shape, form, origin, manner, method, style, fashion, means, modality, technique, approach, aspect, mode, process, avenue, course, procedure, system, source, root, derivation, channel, or outlet associated with the Chinese communist party?
@@kevwjinwell yes but none of it matters
😂🤡
Were not sorry
Will accept your apology once you are senator 😂.
All of those questions, he's proudly answer with "I am Singaporean" That's how proud he is of his nation
But when we say “im American “ you progressives say “thats racist”?????!!
Hello, wife n children r American n he answered, "not yet, no." as to whether he has applied for an American citizenship. To me, it means he wud, in the future.
Imagine if Mr Chew is Canadian. Or French. Or German citizenship. Would the Senator still lamblast his questions that way?
The senator's line of questions is totally legit because he knows that CCP membership has nothing to do with nationality. E.g., Norman Bethune, a Canadian, was a CCP party member.
Also, from Eileen Gu's case, we know that dual-citizenship is not impossible in China. So even though Zhou kept repeating he's Singaporean, this is not a proof that he doesn't have Chinese citizenship, or he is not a member of CCP. So the senator has to press on!
You find the senator ridiculous is totally because of your ignorance, you don't even know who Norman Bethune and Eileen Gu are!

Senator: "are you with us... Or with THEM?"
This is called American Exceptionalism. Americans believe that their nation is the indispensable nation.
wheres bobba fett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mccarthyism
This is only afforded to them because of the war machine they have created in the last half century. Otherwise they don’t have the same tone they have now. But soon the tide will turn.
No this time it's just Tom Cotton being an ass, pandering to his far right, Fox News watching base.
US has the power to let him do things like this tho….
How proud of him to say “I served my military for 2.5 years and I am a Singaporean “. Respecct
of which is completely irrelevant to the question: are you a Chinese communist party member. You know there is such things as millitary spys right ??
Military service is mandatory for male citizens in Singapore
Why is it so hard to just answer the question "are you affiliated with the CCP, yes or no?"
It should be easy to simply say, "no, I am not affiliated with the CCP" and the whole thing would be done.😂
Facts are every large company in China is affiliated with the CCP just like every large US tech company is affiliated with the CIA and FBI. Who do you think put 4 specific backdoors CVE vulnerabilities, perfect for triangulation in every iPhone?
Your comment only shows the same ignorance as Mr. Senator.
0:41:
Senator: have you ever been associated or affiliated with CCP
Chew: no, Senator
"It should be easy to simply say, "no, ...., and the whole thing would be done"

Even Chew Shou Zi is confused, his face reads “Is this senator this stupid?”
Chew's expression says it all. It's like is this guy for real? He's really having a tough time believing anyone can be this embarrassingly ignorant.

Senator: Hello Chinese mister.
Tiktok CEO: I'm Singaporean.
Senator: So why are you Chinese?
Tiktok CEO: who says im Chinese?
In fact, Singapore's famous travel reservation app and streaming app do not recognise Taiwan as a country. why😅
Because both the United Nations and the United States legal documents believe that Taiwan is just a region, not a country in the first place. Its political status was replaced by the Chinese mainland regime in the last century. There are two regimes in the world that constitutionally call themselves China, but There is only one country, China. Please clarify this. If you only listen to the political propaganda of the media and politicians, you will become a fool. Even Taiwan's own constitution states that they are the Republic of China, and Taiwan's chronology still dates from 1912, the Republic of China!
Only those politicians and Western countries who believe that China threatens their hegemony and want to split China will vigorously promote Taiwan as an independent country. Total open provocation and lying. As long as a liar repeats a rumor ten thousand times, a fool will believe it. People these days are fooled by the media.
USA doesn’t recognise Taiwan as a country either
Bro rlly got a 7-step verification 💀
