as an American, i’m no longer embarrassed by seeing this awful behavior because i stopped believing in the greatness of America a LONG time ago. this nation isn’t anybody’s dream, nor was it ever heroic. Huntington put it best: "The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion...but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence.
Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.”
edit: for those who don’t know, “the west” refers to Western Europe and countries settled by them, so the United States, Canada, Australia, etc., it can also include Latin America but that is sometimes referred to as “global south” along with Africa

I'm not American, so you'd be right to correct me here; The rest of the world is not that great/better than America. The main difference is, we (the rest of the world) tend to have an enormous amount of pride in our country.
Also, don't forget that the US had and still has the highest rate of immigrants moving into your country. This means that there are clearly many countries FAR worse off than America as well as many people who are willing to pay an arm and a leg to live there.

The senator's line of questions is totally legit because he knows that CCP membership has nothing to do with nationality. E.g., Norman Bethune, a Canadian, was a CCP party member.
Also, from Eileen Gu's case, we know that dual-citizenship is not impossible in China. So even though Zhou kept repeating he's Singaporean, this is not a proof that he doesn't have Chinese citizenship, or he is not a member of CCP. So the senator has to press on!

Well not really. Why? Does serving in your nation mean you are loyal? Where is the evidence for that? Plenty of American servicemen have betrayed the US. Not disrespectful at all. Is serving in the military somehow honorable when you are getting paid during peacetime? Oh wait Americans have a privilege that’s called a voluntary force. In Singapore, it’s mandatory conscription. Meaning you have NO CHOICE

Issue is most people don't have disciplined parents so they don't have an understanding of discipline from the get go, so military is a very excellent way to gain discipline.
You find the senator ridiculous is totally because of your ignorance, you don't even know who Norman Bethune and Eileen Gu are!

@Nal1 Let me say it again and please pay attention: In countries that don't allow dual citizenship, they may have special provisions for people of special importance. For example, China's Eileen Gu. Moreover, Taiwan also doesn't allow dual citizenship for naturalised foreigners, but if you are of special contribution, you are allowed to keep.your original nationality.
So, let me ask you, are you sure Singapore doesn't have this kind of provision for some important people? Are you sure Zhou is not eligible for this special treatment? I bet you don't know. Neither does the senator, that's why he has to ask! (I bet he doesn't even know Singapore doesn't allow dual citizenship.)
