    I have a fennec fox,
    They are not social with other foxes although I have 2 dogs(which get along great)
    And my fox is never stressed out only as long as you let it get out its energy and give it some room to play
    They are great pets!

      Wild animals belong in the wild. Plenty of cats and dogs in shelters who are in dire need of help.
      No way you can reconstruct the conditions they live in in the wild. Add to that the horrible protection laws in the US , breeding for profit in general leading to awful conditions for the animals and the overwhelming need for conversation rather than ownership of animals and there is no non-selfish reason to want to own an exotic pet.

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@gleiraffe I mean, what about the ones that were born into captivity? They need some place to go and be cared for or they'll die. That's the only way I think it's okay for people to own them. They wouldn't survive out in the wild, if they were born and bred in captivity. I guess a lot of animal activists would rather the animal die than be taken care of by a human who has the resources and what not to take care of such animals. Not you, don't think I'm calling you one of these, but a lot of other "animal activists" think that way.

    Here I was, wanting to own a fennec fox my whole life, and expecting to hear why fennec foxes are really hard to keep as pets (thing like, they have sensitive ears, they don't do well with a lot of people, they are really active and constantly demands your attention) and all I got was
    _Fennec foxes are easily stressed so don't get one cause it's bad_
    If you want information on fennec foxes as pets, I recommend watching the video that 'The Dro' made, it's more useful than this bs

    • @zumis1011
      @zumis1011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nathan Shireling that's a philosophically unsound statement, drugs can be good and bad, it's all about perception, intention, and moderation. Of course, heroin, meth, coke, or anything like that are always bad, but psychedelics, when used responsibly and with the intention of seeking spiritual betterment can be profoundly good for you I don't like getting all fucked up on anything, but I recognize that life is better when your free from presumptions, and able to mix it up, which is pretty hard when you have kids Now, that's a bit of an over generalization, but I've never met parents in their early twenties that weren't yearning to do things they couldn't because of their lifestyle.

    • @zumis1011
      @zumis1011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Goat I don't really drink too often, but I do look back at high school fondly. I stand behind what I said, you introduce me to someone who's never taken drugs/drank, yet still has strong opinions about them, that isn't a boring douche, then I'll change my opinion, but I gotta tell ya, I'm not counting on it.

    • @zumis1011
      @zumis1011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goat So, you have "different kinds" of friends for "this very reason", meaning, if we're on the same page, you must have similar sentiment on this matter, but are unwilling to confront people who project their uppity opinions about drug use. Anyway, being too scared to try drugs and not trying them because of strong negative opinions are two different things, people who hike can be some of the most interesting people out there, and pretty commonly smoke weed and seek the occasional psychedelic experience. I'm not saying this because of his probable social choices/ hobbies, it's more about him having stupid preconceptions about things he doesn't really know about, that's why I called him a nerd turd, because it's a nerdy turdy habit to base your strong negative opinions on what you've read or heard, and then using any stupid excuse in an attempt to validate those beliefs, like in this case, where he's sighting someones quirky personality to justify the cons of drug use.To be clear, nothing wrong with being "nerdy" either, just "turdy", it's a particularly bad mix when you put em together. K? Now quit being turdy, and maybe go take a hike..:)

    A. i agree with everyone, she sounds drunk and high
    B. i fail to see the reasoning behind the title. you have hardly explained WHY "Fennec foxes make terrible pets". here are the 3 bullet points i gathered from you that loosely support your title: 1. they are nocturnal 2. they get stressed easaly 3. they are social animals and you should get 2 instead of one
    already i can see that we can take away bullet point number 3 if you spend time with your fox and be the social partner for them. also we could minimize bullet point 2 if you train your fox to associate any loud noises and strangers as something normal using positive reinforcement. if you did that you probably can get it to a easily manageable level.
    in short you could just re-title the video to "Why fennec foxes are for experienced owners" or something about how advanced you should be to give a fennec fox a proper home.

    • @seanmcfetridge5635
      @seanmcfetridge5635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I have read online on websites like the San Diego Zoo website, the only reason they are nocturnal is to keep cool during the day in the desert. If u dont live somewhere that's as hot as the Sahara or somewhere in africa I'm pretty sure it would have no need to burrow to keep cool during the day. so basically, even number 1 could be removed, making this video completely pointless.

    I have only ever heard good things about foxes as pets. I don't know where miss Katie here gets her facts from, but all animals have their challenges, and if you think a fox's challenges make them bad pets, you have no business having any animals of any kind.
    Everything about them makes them sound like the perfect animal to be domesticating-- social, smart, visually appealing, small... Sounds like everything we want out of an animal companion in today's world. We already have several species under our belts that we have breed to be our friends, what makes it so wrong to add a species of fox to that list? What are we actually hurting to begin the process of domesticating a species of foxes? The wild species will still be there. Given their habitat and ours do not intersect as often as you would think, I don't see the harm.

    • @taski1
      @taski1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know much about fennecs, but I do know you have to constantly buy puppy training pads. And they like to dig as much as rabbits like to chew and cats like to claw your sofa.
      I know more about red foxes, if that's helpful. I know that the domestic ones lost some (but not all) of their musky smell, they're high energy animals (so don't leave them unattended in your house), needs an outside enclosure, can be loud, not allowed as pets in some states, and needs vets that know how to treat foxes.
      Also, once they escape, they don't come back home like dogs.

    • @YourWaywardDestiny
      @YourWaywardDestiny 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      furseisekilulz That sounds like owning a good amount of dog breeds, having a red fox. (Minus the specialist vet.) Also ferrets. A lot like a ferret. I really don't see anything wrong with owning a fox if it matches you. If you're looking for a cute, high-energy animal, foxes match that without some of the genetic problems you get for getting some dog breeds. They have special care needs, just like anything you take in.
      I think they makes good pets. Maybe not for everyone, but no animal is going to please the personality of everyone.

      @YourWaywardDestiny 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dancydoober57@gmail.com I feel like you're trying to use a quote in there somewhere, but are unsure how to operate quotation marks...

    • @YourWaywardDestiny
      @YourWaywardDestiny 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      dancydoober57@gmail.com First, you just replied to yourself, just thought I'd point that out. I don't know if you meant to, but that seems strange... Not to mention, you didn't make an argument to even counter. You put words on a page and made nonsense because that's what ends up happening when you don't properly use the written language in a forum where the the biggest way to communicate is through the written language. There's not a whole lot to respond to intelligently there.
      Second, dogs were adapted from wolves who are naturally predators to humans. That obviously isn't a good first choice either, is it? But guess what, here we are, having domesticated wolves and molded them into what we want them to be because of a handful of desirable traits.
      Third, very few people have the space or patience to keep a black lab happy, being a being bread to be high energy hunting and herding dogs and all, and yet, you seem to waste your time worrying about a pet choice very seldom made and assuming everyone who makes that choice is incapable of caring for them. Somehow a dog is a better choice because no other reason than we've kept them as pets longer. OK. Which leads me to my next point...
      Fourth, you're acting like nobody is capable of ever giving these animals a good home. Remember how a couple of sentences ago I was talking about how people can't even get the right environment for the dogs they decide to get? Well, I'm not suggesting anyone to willy-nilly get a fox. Nobody should adopt ANY animal if they aren't a thousand percent ready to care for them. That's a no-brainer. That is how it is. Period. It is irresponsible to just go out and get an animal without knowing about what it needs to be happy and healthy. If you have the habitat for them, and you are up to the challenge, what is the problem? That you're selectively squeamish about which animal we consider among those worthy of our homes doesn't actually make foxes bad pets.
      Fifth, there are people who breed foxes specifically as pets. They have been doing this for years. Whatever animal was pulled from the wild once had a very sad story. However, their offspring aren't prepared to survive in the wild. These are not wild foxes. These are foxes breed to be pets, and pets they are. If you work in an environment where you rescue mistreated wild animals, I don't think you have any authority to say what kind of success people have with the animals as pets. All you see is the failures from the failure people who could not provide.
      Last, "alot". I don't even know how people still use this. I mean, it comes up as a misspelled word for most spellcheckers...

    • @taski1
      @taski1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      dancydoober57@gmail.com
      oh boy. I was kinda hoping I would stay away from this one. For one thing, if you are saying that we humans don't deserve foxes, then perhaps you are right. However, that's not all you're saying.
      "you would not say we need to "mold " more animals"
      He didn't say it at all.
      "One generation of breeding stock is a joke."
      "Russia has had a breeding program for half a century"
      "One generation"
      "half a century"
      Are you listening to yourself?
      "Watch it on PBS"
      It's on youtube
      "when the novelty of these bat-eared creatures wear off"
      Foxes have been in human lore and culture for a long time. That aside, irresponsibility should be your number one point, because its very provable. It's sad that we *need* the aspca police, but some people are just uncaring slobs.
      "If you ever get a brain"
      childish. Stop that.
      "animal handlers who WORK with these animals tell you they do not make good pets"
      Which ones?
      "I NEED a cute, social, small new pet that hardly anyone has. You HAVE to be Paris Hilton's poor doppelganger."
      You're ASSUMING. Projecting. You cant tell him what he's thinking, and I don't think you know him.
      "You are so breathtakingly stupid in your arrogance and ignorance, you cannot and will not be helped."
      You're giving up way too easily, not that he's going to take you seriously; you're very toxic, do you realize that?

      Well, there is a difference...Cats and Dogs have been domesticated over thousands of years to live with humans and not get freaked out. They've been selectively bred for *so* long that it's built into their DNA now to be OK with living around human beings. With Foxes, they've only recently begun to be selectively bred...so not all the "bad" traits have been bred out of them yet. There is also something called capture myopathy where when a wild animal is captured it gets stressed out so much that it simply dies. A good example is a deer -- I think the figure is like as high as 75% of all adolescent and adult deers that are captured will die in captivity just from being stressed. I don't think Fennecs personally make great pets, but if you have the time to properly raise and socialize one, and you get a good one from a well known breeder who takes their job as a fox breeder seriously, then you should not have any major problems. The big problem with Fennecs is that they are extremely skittish, especially around strangers, but sometimes even with their owners, if they hear a loud noise or something spooks them, they can hide for hours -- they're also nocturnal naturally, and, the worst thing about them IMHO is that like all foxes, they have these scent gland things that cause them to smell sooooo bad...it's like a combination between a skunk, a sewer, and a public toilet...it's rancid...and giving them a bath or grooming them will not help, this is their natural smell. They also can not be left alone for a long time as they will become extremely hyper and sad / stressed -- so if you have a job and want to leave the Fennec at home during the day, please do not get one. They require constant attention, especially when young -- even leaving them alone for a few hours while you go to the store will cause them to be very upset. If you have like a stay at home job or something or don't need to work, and you have someone that can look after the Fennec while you're out then that's fine but keep in mind if you get one of these guys they have to come first before anything else in your life; it's a BIG commitment...that's why they don't make very good pets...people love their cats and dogs but if you told them that if they left their cat alone during the day it would possibly die and become so unhappy and emotional they probably would not want the cat.

    They are not for the casual pet owner. They require a lot of care. I had a fennec at one time when I was dating a woman who works with animals for a living. I wouldn't suggest fennec foxes as a casual pet. But if you are a professional who can give a fennec a life that is comparable to the life it'd have in the wild then go for it. But I'd say that most people cannot or aren't willing to do that.

      +Michael Quindlen I'd agree with you, they are not domesticated like cats or dogs, a person has to be very patient, make sure they are given the proper diet (including bugs, worms, and fruit) and understand they are not lap pets. I can't imagine one doing well in an apartment having had a friend who owned one. The need to hide, and dig, and I would also say never get one that grew up in the wild, they just don't domesticate well. I'm not an expert but that is how it seemed to me. My friend had a big house, he make a very large sand box in the yard, got it the right foods and it did fine.... right up to the point an unfamiliar human got near it.

    • @ArtaherDuron
      @ArtaherDuron 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Blackmore Yes you're corrected they are not domesticated like dog's or cats because no one has genetically morph them like with dogs or cats . People get what domestication means.... Quite confused and more often misused the term..
      The Fennec Fox is currently at the beginning stage of it's domestication. Once someone breed them to gain certain traits - example lets say there's a smaller ear Fennec fox who happen to have a strange coloration. Well you breed them with another Fennec with that same Trait in the hopes to make that trait more dominate.
      "Genetic difference between domestic and wild populations, and between the domestication traits that are presumed to have been essential at the early stages of domestication, and the improvement traits that have appeared since the split between wild and domestic populations." (wiki.)
      Exotic Reptiles is a domesticated animal.
      "Domestication traits are generally fixed within all domesticates and were selected during the initial episode of domestication, whereas improvement traits are present only in a proportion of domesticates, though they may be fixed in individual breeds or regional populations." (wiki.)

      I never got "a life that is comparable to the life it'd have in the wild". Surely your average animals life in the wild consists of desperately trying to find the supplies to sustain their own lives. And in the case of a fennec fox it's a case of roasting in the sun most of the day, looking for water before they dehydrate and looking for something to eat in a wide expanse of fucking nothing for miles while keeping its ears peeled for the next enormous snake that's going to eat its face.
      I mean I could stick it in the oven for most of the day at 50 celsius, hide its water bowl on top of wardrobe and unleash venomous snakes in my house every night but I don't think it wants those things.

      +Knight-Errant I think what most people mean in the end is it getting the exercise and freedom of movement it usually accustomed to. They are an active animal, so if you coup it up all the time it won't be a happy pet. Sadly, a lot of people forget that with a good number of pets and then don't give the animal the proper care or play time to work out it's muscles but it's brain too. They hunt too, so playing with it letting it "hunt" would be good for it too.

But if you ask me if an animals is capable of being a pet it should be more up to, will the animal be "happy", safe, taken care of properly, and not be suffering as a pet in a house, apartment or whatever, which would be the most important part of it, NOT what YOU think of it as a pet.
      And some random person in the comments has no more credibility than this video. If you want something as a pet you should get in contact with someone who actually knows something about these animals who are experts/professionals.

    I hate to break it to people but the typical "house cat" is not domesticated either. So if you are against owning a fox but for owning a cat, you make no sense. A house cat is semi-domesticated at best. Unlike most cats however, the fennec requires a lot of attention. This is what leads them to get depressed. Just like parrots, they will become aggressive when they feel neglected. You need to have a companion for them as well be it another fennec, a cat, or a dog. If you don't spend most of your time at home, do not get one. Seriously. They make horrible pets because they aren't and never will be fully domesticated, but neither will the house cat... So take that for what it is. They do make amazing companions though, once you understand them.

    • @SidewaysGts
      @SidewaysGts 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Britanica How would you define domestication?

    • @TheReKinn
      @TheReKinn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Britanica There's a difference between "tame" and "domesticated." Cats are tame animals. Meaning that you don't have to worry at all about them becoming aggressive towards humans unless mistreated or trained incorrectly. In that way, cats are tame. Fennec foxes (All foxes except for some in siberia that have been bred 10 generations in to be tame) are not tame, but CAN be domesticated. You can domesticate an animal without it being a tame animal. Comparing foxes to cats isn't correct.
      TL;DR - Tame = Genetically safe to be around humans. Domesticated = Trained to be around humans.

    • @austinallen734
      @austinallen734 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +ReKinn You got that backwards.
      Domesticating an animal takes generations of breeding and carefully selecting the traits while exposing the animal to humans. Dogs were domesticated thousands of years ago by humans.
      Taming, on the other hand, is something you can possibly do to most animals, but it requires getting it as a baby and carefully trying to train it. The animal is still feral, just tame to you, meaning it is NOT a safe family pet.

    • @TheReKinn

      +Britanica But unlike the cats, it's very social... Cat's go fine on their own, they are solitare hunters, which means they do not live with other cats in the wild, necessary. :) Just to point that out - it's not cruel to hold cats alone, but it is to hold fennec foxes alone.

      Yeah. If they were as quiet as most cats and dogs, they would be amazing, just about perfect. Fennecs literally scream their lungs out at everything (there are some exceptions, different temperments, etc. but it's generally a universal thing with them as you probably know). Sigh, can't have perfection I guess. For me that is the only issue, but it's a pretty big one. It's basically like having a (human) baby 24/7. Cute as can be, but can make you want to rip your hair out sometimes.
      Funny thing is they are much quieter as babies. It's when they grow up that they just. don't. stop. ever.

    Basically this whole video is wrong.
    Fennec foxes love humans.

    I don't even think Fennec Foxes should be kept as pets. They are wild animals, and they should be in the wild where they are free, and like it said in this video, they can become incredibly stressed in captivity. To be honest, it makes me angry to see a wild animal in captivity (unless they have been rescued and cannot to released back into the wild) but I hate the fact that people scream out "I WANT A FOX! I WANT A FOX! I WANT A FOX!" I know everyone wants a fox (Well, I wouldn't want a pet fox), But having a wild animal as a pet is torture for the animal.. Keep this in mind before getting a wild animal for a pet! Wild animals should be kept wild and free, because we already have dogs, cats, hamsters and such, so why should we want more? I apologize greatly for this HUUUUUGE comment, but today I feel the need to express my feelings. :)

      Any animal in captivity can get stressed. Also all dogs at one point were wild but now look...there are a lot in captivity. Chuahuas and german sherpards. The list goes on. So the fact that you just said you hate it when people want wild animals means that you clearly think that people should not own dogs, cats, etc because at one point they were all wild or they are all wild. And also under the constitution of the USA people have the freedom to get and own what they want, whenever they want. Thus your thoughts and opinions that youve just shared mean nothing. Think twice next time before you troll

      @DFX2KX 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Frank Suarez To an extent, that's true. However. Big cats? Not good pets all the way around, the cost to do the care justice is astronomical. Same with most primates.
      Foxes like these can be pretty destructive, so you wouldn't want it in an apartment (or a house you can't reasonably foolproof). And they need lots of outdoor time and expensive food. Bad? Not exactly, but far better options exist. Unless you're allergic to cats and dogs and want a fuzzy creature you can take for walks.

      that vet cost is expensive. I used to follow a channel some years back, they owned two rescued foxes. The setup they needed was a bit mindboggling. Fennecs aren't quite as bad because they're small, but that vet bill won't pay itself.

      Just remember : In the end a fox is still a wild animal not like a dog who has been domesticated for centurys. So inform yourself and stay cool before making a decision.

      Foxes make fine pets, but its a big responsibility - even moreso than with more domesticated species.
      As the person above stated, really need to make sure you're well-informed and up to the task before obtaining one (which, really, is the case for any animal you're taking into your charge).

      That's why if you're going to own one you should have enough space for it and know how to take care of it properly. I know someone who owns a cheetah (legally) who was a rescue from a Zoo that was mistreating it's animals and they have acres and acres of farmland and field for it to run around on and it is super happy and content.

    No, they're not always legal to own. They are banned in many states. As for making terrible pets- that depends on the owner. They can be wonderful for some, but then again some people shouldn't even own a goldfish. I have many exotic animals that some would consider "terrible to own". I disagree. But they are entitled to their opinion...

    There is no such thing as terrible pets...only terrible owners who don't know how to share their living space with another creature. There's lots of people who get domesticated animals as is and expect them to do things outside of their nature without any real understanding of the other living being that is under their responsibility regardless of the fact that domesticated animals function well with human beings. To say nobody should get a certain pet because most other people are selfish and thoughtless and make terrible owners isn't fair to those who are intuitive and share a wonderful life with their preferred animal companion. Do I think most people should get a fox? No because not every person is a fox person. But I wouldn't tell a fox person they can't have a pet fox either. That's like saying nobody should have a dog because some people out there are not dog people. We should be educating people about individual animals and what it takes to be a great owner rather than saying an animal is a terrible pet.
