I was listening to this song as a young boy when I heard my father had died. The song had just been released that week. Still haunts me 41 years later. Beautiful song.
it IS a beautiful haunting song ...im so sorry for all those lost this song reminds us of...may they forever live in the sunshine of our timeless memories and heart.
As an 18 yr old apprentice listening to this hit in the workshop in the early 80’s in Adelaide .. brings back great memories... cars, girls, mates, music.... simple times, but great times.
Better music , nice , more humble non woke women, could buy a paddle pop=40c; play an arcade gme for 40c as well! And i remember wrigleys chewing gum could be bought along with 3 or 4 footy cards in early 80,s
Today I walked into a shop that had this playing. I stood with tears in my eyes. It took me straight back to a time when, for me, things were so much simpler. It is a beautiful song 🖤
It is a beautiful song, although I doubt that 1981 was a simple life, even as we look back, it seems so. I bet your chemicals and thoughts were rushing back and forth, your doubts and dreams were throbbing and plummeting moment to moment. Unresolved. It is still great to be alive.
A beautiful timeless classic. I remember being 10 years old sitting next to the family record player playing this single and now I am sitting here tonight listening to it on my laptop 35 years later, loving it just as much.
Another classic from the 1981 Chemistry album...this album deserves much more recognition and appreciation as one of the greatest Australian albums ever released.
I recently found an old and very heavy sharp radio cassette ghetto blaster in a council hard waste collection ! a mondo rock tape in the deck ! I get if home plug it in and presto old school Aussie 80's music it doesn't get any better and probably the first time the tape has been played in decades ! as I get older I'll always be grateful to have been old enough to remember this music when it was first released even if I was only a kid !
Another Aussie classic. Used to play this song at our nightly teenage beach bonfires at Greenpatch in Jervis Bay during a summer long ago. Stanley Leasingham, Winny Blues and life without care.
I'm annoyed that no-one here in the UK knew about this band in the 1980s. I'm sure their songs would have been very popular if people had been aware of them.
Everytime I view these guys, oh the memories take me back to the best days of my life. My teenage years, tears come into my eyes, the 70, 80's. If I could turn back time. XOX
But do you like to have got older now and had kids maybe Grandkids? Are you retired yet ? Yes we’re great times and everyone tends to make the same comments so does mean that you wanted to be a teenager forever ? Never grow up , get married , have kids etc ?
In the UK we didn't know anything about this band which seems totally ridiculous. I'm sure they would have been popular if the record company had released their records over here. Summer of 81 and Come Said The Boy are my favourites.

I love everything about the 80’s. Being a little girl in the 80’s & a teen in the 90’s. I’m so stuck in this era, so much great music & great memories of the world.
Written by Eric McCusker, guitarist in Mondo Rock. Said he was disappointed Springfield changed the song somewhat, but happy with the big paycheck when it went up the US charts!
I never knew about this version. I had only heard of Rick Springfield's cover. Both are very good. I also like his former wife Pat Wilson's Bop Girl. The 80's were so good music wise.
Hadn't heard this song since the early 80's when I was about 10 years old....hearing it again takes me straight back to those beautiful summers when your a kid in Australia. Coming at the song now as a musician, I realise just what perfect songwriting it is. Great musicianship, the drums and bass lock in so well. Had to learn to play Mondo's Cool World in my band (another brilliant song) and started to listen to some of their other stuff that I hadn't listened to in 30 years....glad I did.
i met ross Wilson at a gig in Albury 2004. he was a legend. took time to meet fans and sign tickets. very friendly. and the performance was unbelieve. true rock legend
Every Mondo Rock song was fantastic. They were awesome to listen to during the 80's. Ross the Boss Wilson was successful with Daddy Cool and over ten years after Mondo Rock just as Big.
Saw you last Saturday Ross and this is still my favourite song. A timeless classic. Love it. Thanks for the photo and the signed CD. You wrote Stay cool Leanne. I am so touched. xxx regards Leanne

Wow.... this was a magical song to me. I remember camping at Moreton Island and hearing this. My boyfriend came over to see me. So nice. I was 17. I wish I knew what I knew now. Sigh....
Mondo Rock was the first live band I saw as a teenager. It was at a place called Stewarts Hotel in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, one of the best bands I've seen and still love their music some 25 years later.
One of my fav songs from the Australian music era of that time. Living on the Gold Coast were you could experience iconic Aussie bands at the Bombay Rock at Surfer's and the Playroom at Tallebudgera. Both pulled down many years ago!
Bombay Rock at the top of Cavill Avenue if I remember rightly. I lived in Brisbane from 82 to 87. The Rock, The Calamvale and The Roxy in The Valley were the 3 big venues for touring artists. I saw some great bands in those venues during a golden age of Aussie pub rock. You don't appreciate how special the times are until they are gone and all you have left are the memories.
@@MisterRSG remember the Jet Club? It was a little further down Cav as you headed to the beach. Then there was Hemi at the Beer Garden on a Sunday arvo.

Reading the comments and listening to this, bought tears to my eyes. Tears of happiness that I grew up listening to these songs. Tears of sadness that the world has serious;y turned to shit. To all us 70's babies, we are seriously the lucky ones.
Immensely grateful that Garth Davis' film "Lion" brought me here. What a fantastic and underrated song especially here in the States where the Rick Springfield Cover played mostly. The cover by RS being exquisite too.
The window man came as i played this song,he was so Happy!! Said aww wow i was at the Countdown show as a teen 😊 Memories for All..Least we can hold onto those 💜💜💜
I love how they sing about love do much back in those days ..nobody sings about romance from the heart ...❤ So much more love then. Bring back the love 💕
Just heard this version after only knowing Rick Springfield's cover for the longest time. Love both of them! For me, Mondo Rock's original reminds me of a 50's doowop ballad with some slow 60's British rock feel and 70's instrumentation (specifically the electric piano). The sparse instrument arrangement gives it a very intimate feel, like you're in a tiny nightclub. My only criticism is that the last minute feels very repetitive and can either be cut down a bit or use some variety. Rick Springfield's version is definitely a full-on 80's commercial ballad. It's a very lush arrangement with layers and layers of synthesizers, but it works quite well. I feel like the new bridge works really well considering the lyrics it transitions from, and the ending feels a less repetitive and more conclusive. There are elements that I love from both. I love Mondo Rock's sparse instrumentation and slower beat, and prefer Rick Springfield's bridge, ending, and angsty lovelorn singing. It would be awesome if someone could cover this again with these elements.
Yes, interesting how persons 9 to 15 back in the mid 80s, having wet dreams drooling over the songs like come said the boy. The question is did anyone turn the song into reality when 17? Yes agreed what a legend of Oz music should be so appreciated with all the shallow crap around now no Instagram Facebook can take away the way we loved and lived in the 80s it rocked like nothing else on this planet
Heard this during a scene in the movie Lion, had to find it, after hearing the whole thing I remember hearing this as a kid....so happy to hear it again...great song!!
I thought the song was appropriate for that Qantas jet scene in movie. Saroo is a confused state of the heart. Although he is moving on to a new and better life in a first world nation, he longs to see his natural family in India.
I remember arriving Oz in "76, a snot-nose kid from NZ for a one year backpacking holiday and discovering the Aussie music scene, and never left...until 22 years later to work here in Singapore. Give my left testicle to go back to those days, awesome. Still remember (although fading with age) seeing INXS live at the Trade Union Club in Surrey Hills as one of many fond memories,,fuk lol
I'm 55. Anytime I feel down or need to escape today's crap. This is where I go. Late 70s early 80s music. The ultimate lift.❤

If I seem a little strange
It's just the state of the heart
I'm waiting here for you
In the state I'm in
If I seem confused
It's just the state of the heart
You know I wait in the dark
In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah
It's the state of the heart
The state of the heart
The state of the heart
The state of the heart
Yes agreed what a legend of Oz music should be so appreciated with all the shallow crap around now no Instagram Facebook can take away the way we loved and lived in the 80s it rocked like nothing else on this planet
Heard this during a scene in the movie Lion, had to find it, after hearing the whole thing I remember hearing this as a kid....so happy to hear it again...great song!!
I thought the song was appropriate for that Qantas jet scene in movie. Saroo is a confused state of the heart. Although he is moving on to a new and better life in a first world nation, he longs to see his natural family in India.
Omg same! I’m watching it for an assessment at school and I’m like OH THIS SONG IS AMAZING
Timeless good music. Hard to believe Ross Wilson turns 70 this year.
I bet he looks and sings as well as ever too!
