Before anyone reads this, it is meant to be an explanation, not an attack. When a someone doesn't subscribe, it might be because they have people controlling them (parents, guardians, other) who don't want to let them subscribe. I created this account solely for the purpose of not having it show up on my parents' browsers, because I wasn't allowed to subscribe to anyone. Additionally, for those who are in the closet, watching channels with LGBTQ people in them is awesome, but we'll go to insane lengths to cover it up. Thank you for being openly gay. It gives me hope.

    • @MOTHHMAN

It could also be that some people watching her just don't have a TH-cam account for whatever reason so they can't subscribe! :0c But ya, you're explanation for this is really reasonable! I probably tried to hide the TH-cam channels I watched from my parents as well a few years ago(aka when I was much younger), lmao.

    • @feverspell
      @feverspell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

Just to add an anecdote to your story, growing up, my two best friends were Jewish, and they celebrated Christmas, albeit the secular aspects of it. They put up a tree and decorated their houses with Santa Claus and snowmen and reindeer and twinkling lights...all that jazz. Their rationale was, Christmas is mostly a secular holiday nowadays anyway, and there's nothing religious about a man sliding down your chimney to deliver presents underneath a pine tree you've propped up in the living room. I couldn't find fault in their argument. You wouldn't see Christians celebrating Hanukkah, however, as there's no secular aspect to that holiday for non-Jews to partake in. I do love a good latke, though.
I'm an atheist, and I celebrate Christmas the exact same way. I love the music and the lights and the decorations and the food and the togetherness with friends and family. You don't need religious faith or even _Christian_ religious faith to enjoy that.

It's so nice to see someone of another faith celebrating festivals that have pagan roots and actually noticing/accepting this without trying to cover it up. Another reason to love Jessica 💕
I've always found Quakerism interesting to learn about. Personally I'm not really religious, I believe that everything is sacred and nature is our provider (not a god but I realise the importance and power of nature) but I don't dismiss the idea of a higher being/deities etc but don't particularly worship any. I also celebrate most pagan festivals, mainly the esbats and equinox/solstices. So some kind of off the path paganism 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Who isn't down for that? I can be atheist and still appreciate traditions and cultural practices as well as see a decorated tree and think it's beautiful and artistic. I just don't attach any god or goddesses to it. It's a tree with pretty lights. Family is coming over and bringing 10 tons of food. I’m a Wiccan and have been for well over 10 years at this point I celebrate Yule as well as Christmas because of family, but in recent months I’ve came to the conclusion that possibly in another life (if you believe in that sort of thing) that I could happily be a Quaker. While it’s not for me in this life who knows what’s next so this very well could be what I lean towards eventually. I love the fact that it’s a well deserved break and breath of fresh air from the whole of ceremonial Evangelical beliefs that exist today and tend to focus more on conversion and at times within the last 40 years, violence by a select few people towards others who don’t agree with this. It’s a lot more friendly, accepting, streamlined and in ways less complicated and flashy than a lot of modern Bible based religions and beliefs which deserves a ton of respect in itself.

Thank you for this video Jessica. I love a good ponder on meanings! I agree with the idea that it's nice to make life meaningful and appreciate the gift of getting to be alive, I think adversity can really bring that into focus. Personally, I celebrate the summer solstice, because it makes sense to be joyful on the longest brightest day of the year! And at midwinter, I celebrate the darkest longest night, and the knoedge that the spark of light will return with longer days and warmth, as a metaphor for life too. At Christmas, because I live in nz, but we do a family christmas in the garden, and I enjoy the picnic food, relaxing, and appreciation through small gifts my family does. I really appreciate how open and relatable you make your spiritual questions, I guess that's a reflection of the non judgement of the quaker philosophy, the encouragemnt and trust to speak your mind and also listen to others genuinely too. My dad was a quaker for years, and I'm realising how much of what you say is familiar through him parenting me. Anyway, all the best

Thank you for enlightening me on the Quaker religious practices. You opened my eyes to aspects I never knew of. Like you, I find myself in the middle when it comes to Christmas, balancing the religious & festive ( or 'commercial') goings on. The one overall concept I never waver on is the act of giving. Whether it be monetary donations or food donations or clothing donations or donating my time ... I truly enjoy giving of what I have and/or can. Sharing something that helps achieve a happiness for another is what I have & always will cherish, not just during the holidays but year round. I believe it to be healthy and fulfilling to celebrate traditions. As the saying goes, "Peace on Earth, goodwill towards men." 🤔 Perhaps it's time to alter that. How about: "Peace on Earth, goodwill to ALL"
Thank you for the video, Jessica. #Vlogmas is off to a fantastic start. Maybe for a future Vlogmas video you could discuss any traditions you & Claudia share, or any the two of you wish to begin. Thanks again! Take care!! 👍🤟💝

As someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas in the standard sense, being Jewish, I really enjoyed seeing how you as a Non-Christian or a Non-Standard Christian that's different from what you see in the media. I personally do celebrate with family members because they have chosen to not embrace Judaism, which is their right, but they have chosen to celebrate Christmas secularly. So I buy them gifts for Christmas and we spend time together and we also visit other family. I just love hearing about all the different ways the holiday seasons are celebrated by different people.

Thank you for the blog as and the idea of the “prompts” in the advent house!
A “tenet” is a belief. A “tenement” is a large housing project (with a rundown connotation in the US). Both have a root from “tenere”, to hold.

Given that if the Christ-child did indeed exist, then he was not born on the 25th of December, but sometime in march. The sole reason Christmas is celebrated at that time that it is, is due to the pagan rites of rebirth and renewal associated with the 'death' of the sun on the shortest day of the year and the feasting associated with the defiance of the scarcity of resources.

  • @justTOwatchANDenjoy

Honestly Christmas season use to be a time where I would spoil my family with multiple unique gifts and also celebrate baby Jesus and the virgins Mary’s birthday (raised catholic) but now this year I lost my job with no real hope soon, I’m finally made to rethink it all, I do appreciate time with my family with food. So Christmas means a time to gather and share a piece of each other’s stories from the year and really get to understand each other.

This was a wonderful video! I love hearing about other people's beliefs. I especially liked the "you can't smell your own Christmas" bit. What an important thing to remember. It is easy to identify other people's traditions, beliefs, and biases that are different from our own experience. This season is a great time to take a moment to "smell our own Christmas" - examine why we think, believe, and act the way we do and be genuinely interested in why others think, believe, and act the way they do. In fact, that sounds like a great tradition everyone can enjoy. Maybe every year we should learn about a different culture/religion and celebrate with them.

"the third day of the twelve month" is usually how it is said in the arabic. We do have names for the months but none of my relatives really remember them. Also the days of the week go by numbers too, Sunday being the first day. So people don't get confused, the days of the week are the names of the numbers pronounced a bit differently. (The numbers are where the names of the days of the week originate).

I found what you said about being religious and leaving behind the religious part very interesting. I'm an American Quaker (I go to an unprogrammed meeting) and I see that a lot here. Some of even our Elders (though I think we use the term differently) are not sure if they believe in God as a being so we are always careful to use the Light in place of God, or at least say both. It something that troubles my mother (she was raised Christian and now attends meeting every now and then) and leads me to deep thought. For us, and I think it's fairly common in non pastoral unprogrammed American Quaker meetings, we don't think God has to be named as such or tied specifically to Christianity, though we recognize it to be the origin of our religion. Personally, I tend to use God-language and see the Light as our own internal manifestation of God. I hold no judgement, only interest in Quakers who do not believe in God (whether as a literal being or the spirit who guides us), but without a God Quakerism does seem to veer more into "spiritualism" than a religion which is how many of my friends try to rationalize Quakerism when I explain it to them. But like most Quakers I talk myself into circles because of course who am I to decide what is religion? I love watching your Quakerism videos because I like to see how it's practiced differently in the UK! In my meeting we tend to make note or do little activities after worship for all major holidays regardless of the religion, though Christmas does tend to get a bit more attention. Is it the same way in the UK? I get the sense from your videos that Quakerism there is still more solidly rooted in Christianity.
