  • Italian, Chinese and even Thai restaurants are easy to find in Tokyo. However if you're looking for less-known cuisine like Hungarian, you'll have to do some research.
Totoratei is a quaint and cozy restaurant specializing in Yoshoku, which is Japanese-style Western food. In addition to their regular menu, they serve dishes from around the world. On this particular visit, they were serving Hungarian dishes so it was time to pay them a visit.

Eiji Totora I just saw this video and took a look at your site. The Swedish dishes (December 2019) looks authentic. The meatballs are served just this way in Sweden. The combination of the ingredients, tastes, textures, is what makes the dish very delicious.
Fish/sea food is very popular in Sweden. Pies are popular lunch dishes in the summers. Great wine pairings to. Love to see Georgian wine on the menu.
We have a growing domestic wine production in Sweden, the white wines are become quite exceptional, the grape Solaris is the most common. But rose, sparkling and reds are made as well.
      Great video, great restaurant :)

We had visited your country in the summer solstice of 2018.

Then as you known,we had share our experience with typical Swedish cuisine in 2019.
Our purpose was not only introducing cooking but also make a chance to know unique advanced Swedish social system.
In Japan, generally,Sweden is known for its rich social welfare.
However,we think,it was only a part of these qualities.
So we had try to introduce diversity, tolerance, ecological economic, balance of work and life of Sweden to our people.
True, we have adopted similar social systems such as democracy and capitalism,
but there are considerable differences between Sweden and Japan.
So we believe,we can learn much more from these differences.

      Hi Mónika!
We had visited your country twice because of its sophisticated culinary culture.
In fact,we really think,Magyarian cooking is quite unique in the European countries.
Especially, way of using spice is we couldn't find in another places.
      (We missed Gulyás and Csirkepaprikás!)
We are also interested in the Finnish, Estonian and Komi food cultures,
which are part of the Finno-Ugric languages as well.
The commonalities and differences will point us to the breadth of cooking.
And it will also tell us that we are interconnected.

Wow, as a native Hungarian, I'm impressed! Looks like the chefs really did their research on Hungarian cuisine.
The fisherman's soup is indeed made with several diffrent kinds of fish traditionally (although in Hungary it is usually carp, catfish and other smaller freshwater fishes, we don't have a seaside).
And caraway is very commonly used, my mom puts ground caraway seeds in basically everything :D
Also, "nokedli" (the thing with the stew) is an egg dumpling, so you are right, it's similar to spätzl.
This restaurant must be amazing, everything looks sooo good!

Keltani can you tell me why there is so much paprika in the hungarian dishes? I love it just curious, my mum(dutch) allways makes hungarian goulash with lots paprika.

    • @Keltaani
      @Keltaani 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

Your mom does it right! :D I guess paprika to Hungarians is like basil to Italians or soy sauce to Japanese, it's just what we got used to. I'm not sure why it became so important in our cuisine though, it's not native to Hungary, we got it from South America through traders, like most of Europe. Anyway, it is now part of our "holy trinity" of cooking: paprika, onion and sour cream :D These are very common in meat dishes. Plus caraway, marjoram and parsley too.

Italian here, my mum uses mostly basil, garlic and tomatoes, very common for Italian cooking. It took me a few years to perfect my pasta sauce and other dishes, all family recipes that we carry with us in our minds and in our hearts as food is family time and family is love. Have an awesome day!!😃

I heard once that in Hungary there was a time where pepper, black pepper was banned. Black pepper was our common used spice before, but when it was banned, Hungarians needed something instead, and that was paprika. Paprika can be very hot, or sweet one (which is not hot at all), it depends on your own taste which one you use (my stomach hates hot spices, so I prefer sweet one, but some family members put super hot paprika in nearly every dish, which is similar to chili). Now that pepper is not banned, we use it a lot too, but Paprika became our main spice!

Man this place looks fantastic. It's so nice to see people actually take pride in the food they make and serve. In my area, 99% of restaurants are not businesses of passion but rather just people thinking its a way to make a living. And they are all just the same menu of frozen things tossed in the deep frier. No love, no care.
Also thanks so much for pointing out that this place is english friendly. That's one of my big worries for when I finally have funds to go overseas is the language barrier. It would be beyond awesome if you could make a video showcasing places that are friendly to non japanese speakers or how to find them easily while planning a trip.

I love how you use the music in this video ^^ And yes: You are right with the Spätzle. There are different types of Spätzle: there are thin long ones whose dough is scraped from a plank right into hot water and little chubby ones like you had in the video - the chubby ones are called "Knöpfle" = "little buttons" and they are made with some kind of sieve where the dough can drop through into hot water. In my home area in the Eifel (Western Germany near the border to Belgium) we like to eat "Mehlklöße" (literally translated to "lumps made from flour"). They are made with the same dough as Spätzle but have the size of chicken nuggets. It is food to fill your stomach quickly and even poor people could afford the ingredients back in the time when the Eifel was a really poor area of farmers.

Yeah, the Hungarian cuisine got quite a lot of German regional dishes once via K&K, and also through Germans who moved to Hungarian territory back in the 1700-1800s. Meine Familie gehört zu den Letzteren 😁 Nokedli is quite surely Nockerln originally, and actually Knöpfle, as you said. Galuska is a similar variant, they are neither scraped nor dropped but spooned 😊 anyway, Grüße in die Eifel von einem Donauschwaben in China 😂

Oh my god! We were visiting Japan in December with my Husband and really liked it, but we did not know about this place! Now I am really sad, because I wanted to taste how Japanese chefs do our common dishes like stew and ribs! And at the end of our trip we missed our home food really much! :D Next time if we go back to Japan I will make sure to go here and eat a lot! ^^

@TabiEats It is March 16, 2020, and I am watching your lovely channel from NYC. After I watched you Katz's Deli video [and commented, lol ] I watched your top 10 plus 1 on places to visit in Japan, and it brought me to this video of this wonderful couple. You both are adorable and I truly enjoy the vicarious experience of watching you eat and share your travels with us.

You know, whenever I watch a video of Totora-tei I'm conflicted, the owners are so lovely and passionate about food from around the world, but would i prefer more traditional Japanese food? Well after this video, I can confidently say I'd LOVE to try it. Those ribs and matcha cake... they changed my mind. Here they are, using some traditional Japanese flavours, but creating something completely different. The passion on the ladies face when she talked about the ribs.. (not to mention Satoshi's!:P) is what food is all about isn't it? To master one cuisine is an achievement, but to honourably pay respect to so many is an art form. Great video guys!

We Hungarians really like to eat, we really like great food and we can cook very well! The average Hungarian can also cook excellently! We have great food when we ship to Japan too! Eg winter salami, Szeged peppers, goose liver pate. Many Hungarians live in Japan, who love to prepare Hungarian food and offer it to the Japanese people! We Hungarians really like the Japanese! :)

The Hungarian dishes (first 3) in order:
Fisherman soup = Halászlé - It is made of sweet water fish, but more important to have more fish types, so you can layer the flavors.
The crepes with chicken = Hortobágyi húsos palacsinta - Crepes from Hortobagy with meat. You can use Chicken Paprikas (paprikás csirke) or other Hungarian stew (pörkölt) recepies for the filling.
Stew = Pörkölt - This can be made of any kind of meat. It is a base made with onions, garlic, pepper, and some other spices, sweet paprika, and sometimes tomatoes where you add the meat in big chunks. It can be made in a kettle too on open fire. It is usually either plated with Nokedli (Shinichi called it Spetzle and he was right, it is the German title). You can also serve it with boiled potato or with rice.

Fisherman's soup is usually made with 1 or 2 types of fish, usually carp or catfish, the other hungarian dishes were fine.
