I had this when it came out, I thought it was pretty amazing at the time coming from RAW on the SNES. The intro video was awesome, all the moves and reversals were great, tons of wrestlers to choose, and the crowd and backgrounds in the arena looked much better than WCW vs. NWO.
@@marcludwick512 the menu music always sticks in my mind. It was awesome. I love the piped in sound effects in the intro. And the match bgms are good as well.
Scott Steiner has the best moveset in every game he’s in! Mullet singlet Scott is arguably the most talented to ever wrestle Chain mail rocking Big Poppa Pump is one of the greatest transformations in history White Lightening Peaks&Freaks haha This game though I was always fond of along with Power Pro Wrestling? Could be wrong on that title but it even had in ring announcer! This game was more than likely a port of Fire Pro back then? But felt its underrated
Aki is well known for their fictional wrestlers in their WCW games. I believe that they are based on real wrestlers, but they didn't have the rights to their name or likeness, so they alter the characters enough to get away with it and slapped a different name on him. For example, on WCW vs nWo Revenge Jekel is supposed to be Dr Death Steve Williams.
Went from WrestleMania on Sega Genesis to this on PS1 in 1997 and it blew my mind! I was 12 years old. I lived in an apartment complex and 3 of my friends had the game. We'd have Title Vs Title Matches every weekend. We'd also run 4v4 tournaments taking turns against the CPU. This was the best wrestling game experience of my life. I always used Billy Gaijin because I LOVED Scott Norton.
What a time to be alive. I have to admit, I grew up with the PS2. So seeing better graphics between game consoles and hearing about technical limitations was cool. But now, it seems we've almost reached the summit. So the console graphics jump isn't really meaning much now. When I was a kid, HD was a distant dream. Then in a short time it became the standard. Technology moves fast that's for sure.
My only memory of this game is seeing on the shelf in the games section of my local video rental store but unfortunately around that time, I was on Team N64
Sanders Keel said on a podcast he was a tester at THQ his mentor asked him to play Virtual Pro Wrestling for 2 weeks and see if these guys should make a WCW game for THQ. Sanders played for like 20 minutes and loved it because it played like grappler instead od a fighting game so he had them do a quick and dirty localization. WCW gave them the shots of Sting months before he debuted as the Crow as well.
@@beanomac3126 Sanders is also on the Insdiers Edge podcast. I provided some questions. Justin Leeper was a creative on the SVR games doing a bunch but most knonw for Road to Wrestlemania for 2009, 2010 and 2011, which he has director's commentaries on TH-cam for where he gives a behind the scenes stories. He's a big AKI guy as well. He's still making games.
this was far better than the nitro and thundar games for PSX. I still dont understand why they moved away from this format for the PSX but gave pure gold to n64.
They seem to have gotten lazy. The developers of Nitro and Thunder I don't think we're even wrestling fans. THQ left them to their own devices and they were more interested in putting themselves in a game than actually making a good one. That said, I've still got to try Nitro and Thunder before I give a final grade to it.
This game has some moves AKI never put in the games that followed. For example the straightjacket powerbomb or a military press done quickly as a light move.
"the Man Breeze" has to be the funniest name for a company I ever heard. They should have just named themselves "Gentleman Farts" lmfao
@@jonbourgoin182 never thought of it like that. But yeah, now I won't be able to think about it in any other way. 😂
The Unknown was Super Delfin of Michinoku Pro. Delfin never competed in WCW, so him being added to the roster is pretty random.
He does look similar. Thank you for solving this. Its been something that has bothered me for a while despite it being in my face this whole time.
I enjoyed this game back then and the music was top notch
@@rh8560 yeah, the music is great. A real fighting game feel.

I'll have to look into power pro wrestling. I feel like I've heard of this game before. But I've certainly never played or seen footage of it.
Also I agree. No one is finer than Scott Steiner!
Vs The World was so fun back in the day. This game was the beginning of my nerdom into wrestling.
@@seeowins I think mine was No Mercy. But I heard from a lot of people how awesome this was when it was first released!

Yeah, but the names they came up with in this game for those fictional characters are hilarious 😂. They definitely had fun that's for sure.
