Genesis has exceeded expectations and climbed up in the luxury class. Unfortunately, people tend to subjectively shop cars for prestige first then designs after. Genesis needs to maintain its beautiful engineering for a few more years to get further reputable attention. People will still go for Germans and Lexus because they’ve been around for a while.
They go for Lexus because they’re bulletproof and have nothing to prove to anyone. They go to the Germans because they’re still status symbols and can still be fun to drive.

My only issue is calling that a coupe. I know they didn't start it (looking at you, BMW X6), but the FAR better word would be "Fastback" So much sexier than calling a 4 door softroader a "coupe"
I bought a MDX Type S and comparison shopped with the GV80 so was very interested in the video (an avid viewer of Savagegeese). But the title is misleading - the video spends most of the time comparing the GV80 to German rivals, NOT to Lexus and Acura (Acura really not at all). Why isn't the title "Surpassing BMW, Mercedes and Audi?"
The Type S is a far superior vehicle to the GV80 but to be fair thats a one off for Acura. According to Hyundai marketing they are conquesting, Lexus and Acura and lessor extend Audi.
@@savagegeese I hope this is fake... You have in your description the MDX. To be comparable in price to the GV80 it would be the Type S variant (which isn't a one off - they have it for the 2025 model year). More importantly, the main part of my comment is that you barely mention Acura or Lexus and focus mostly on the Germans - so you title should more accurately reflect that. Right?
@@davidlehr9213 eh, the title is just a title. Genesis wants to compete with segment leading German cars, and that ends up being how the discussion goes. Luckily there are many other videos from Savagegeese about the GV80 comparing it to the other non-german luxury cars

@@savagegeeseI'm sure Mark and Jack already knows this, but you shouldn't always trust what a marketing department has to say about anything really. Their main job/function is to spin a narrative that furthers their company's agenda, regardless of whether it's true or not.
I have considered the GV80. My problem with it is they are not really that much cheaper than a BMW X5. I think the Genesis is priced about $8000 too high to lure BMW drivers away from BMW.
I'm a former BMW driver / fan and I'm switching to GV80 (likely the hybrid variant when it should be out within the next 1~2 years). The reason is that I buy my vehicles 1 to 2 years old and drive them for 10+ years. Over the longer term, I'd bet I'd have fewer problems with the GV80 vs the X5. I also prefer the exterior/interior of the Genesis, prefer the tech (video in the instrument cluster gauges when changing lanes, augmented reality), the Goldilocks ride, quieter ride, the warranty and the dealership experience is actually better in my area (Genesis will pick up and drop off a loaner during servicing and return the vehicle to a location that is convenient to you). To each their own I guess..but how user unfriendly the German tech has become is such a turnoff...
The wireless CarPlay vis OTA update coming to USA September. I have the 2023 2.5T GV70 and is by far the best vehicle I have owned ,superb design elements and best value luxury purchase . Where I live, the dedicated new Genesis dealership is so far an excellent experience (‘concierge service) . agreed the reliability is the one unknown, unlike Lexus / Acura but I’m hoping with the 10 year warranty it won’t be too much of a worry .. 14K miles and 21 months on, no issues at all .
I wish the sales and service from Genesis would be up to par with Lexus and Acura before saying Genesis can compete at their level. My local Genesis location is part of an existing Hyundai dealer and everything is just low rent.

@@jr1885 I’m in my 50’s. When Lexus/Acura first came to my area back in the day, they were mostly located together with an existing Toyota/Honda dealer, but had separate self contained buildings with their own stag, and the inventory was divided if they shared the same lot. You could be at the Toyota or Honda dealer waiting for service and go next door to experience a whole different level of product and customer service. That’s how my dad got his first RX300 and my brother his first Acura Integra. But Honda/Toyota sales/service was already good to begin with, which is something I cannot say for Hyundai.
I got rid of a 2022 Tucson last month and replaced it with a Lexus. Never in a million years would I ever consider a Genesis. That was the worst car ownership experience I’ve had and the fact that my Hyundai dealer was also a Genesis dealer tells me all I need to know.

They were very quiet about this be cause they're having problems with the update in North America. Been postponed 3 times since June. It has been released in other countries though...successfully.
The problem i have with Genesis is that the dealer experience / service is not quite there for a luxury car. A lot of Genesis dealerships are very much extensions of exieting Hyundai dealerships
Even Mazda has surpassed Acura. Genesis is definitely a level above, matching Lexus. I'll never purchase another Acura again. They're playing at the kiddie table with Infiniti.
@@naveenthemachine ... by this pathetic logic, Acura never even existed. Seeing as Lexus has more than doubled sales over Acura for the past decade. But yes, Lexus should be on notice because Genesis is coming out with some really great cars. Acura isn't even in the conversation. If Acura was in the Olympics, they'd be breakdancing for Australia.
Genesis has absolutely killed it since they entered the market and they have only improved year after year. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, all Genesis cars are sold through Hyundai dealerships which have some of the worst reputations in the US. Once the honeymoon phase wears off and you start having issues with the car, the only thing that matters is the service you have to fix the car you tied up $30-$80k in. Getting lied to, scammed, dragged through the mud, etc ruins any experience no matter how nice the car is.
Well to counter what you said, Acura and Lexus came out with bats swinging. Legend beat the Germans, NSX beat the Italians and Lexus nailed the S class for cheaper.
@@rahimi4762 How exactly does the fact that Japanese brands have hit some home runs over the years take the stench off the purgatory of a Hyundai dealership experience? I'll take my answer off the air.

Lexus is boring in comparison but has a proven track record of reliability. Meanwhile hyundai, kia and genesis have electrical gremlins and engine implosions at sub 50k miles. My neighbor parks his on the street because of all the fire recalls... lol
Yea still hanging. Although as of 2020, they came out with all 'new' engines. Like the 3.5 has both GDI and MPI to avoid carbon buildup. But only time will tell. I hope they can put it behind, the competition is good for consumers, whether people like the cars or not.

Thinking about getting this for my wife. Shes always gets Lexus SUVs from her boyfriend every year and she’s been talking about trying something different for once. Wonder if this will be to her liking. I have enough money in my allowance for it.
Hyundai needs to figure out their place in the industry. Lexus came out and had a vision of who they wanted to be(dealer experience, reliability and price), Hyundai came out and just tried to make a poor man’s German car but priced them very close to the Germans. Why not just buy a BMW or MERCEDES.

Hyundai products have lots of great tech, but the drivetrains are just so sketchy. My wife and I just sold our 2022 Sonata N-Line with the 2.5T (direct & port injection, good call) 4-cylinder and Hyundai's 8-speed DCT. It had 67K miles and the transmission failed out of the blue. The dealer where we bought it gave us a decent price for it and promptly submitted a warranty claim on the DCT. The engine also consumed oil beginning at only about 30K miles. Shortening the oil change interval appeared to help w/consumption. This same drivetrain is in the base G70, GV70, GV80. I just can't bring myself to buy a Hyundai product over a Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura. Too much long term reliability risk.
Genesis shares zero motors with the Hyundai lineup. 2.0t Genesis = Theta II Hyundai = Theta θ 3.3t Genesis = Lambda II Hyundai = Lambda Λ While the naming convention is similar, none of the (modern) Genesis lineup have had any widespread motor issues. The only thing I've seen on these have to do with the fuel pump recall and a potential oil leak. The 2.5T you're speaking of that is in the base G80, GV70, GV80, and now G70 are Genesis only, with the exception of the Kia Stinger. (RIP) It is not shared with any of the N-Line series. Again, no comparative reliability concerns beyond a periodic lemon across all models for going on 5 years now. The worst motor they've used was that shitbox 3.8 Lambda II, which was phased out with the overhaul in 2020. The transmission seems to be the weakest link, but with the insane warranty offered, and how little occasions I can find on total failures, I wouldn't think this is anymore a concern compared to other manufacturers. The dealership situation does suck some serious butthole, though. Month and a half wait to get recall work done is fucking bananas.
@@borkoman To say they don't use the same engines seems to be splitting hairs to me. The engine in my prior Sonata N-Line is the Smartstream G4KP (for FWD vehicles) while the Genesis products use the Smartstream FR G4KR (for RWD vehicles) that has a higher compression ratio and makes few more horsepower. Both engines are made by Hyundai and appear to be virtually identical mechanically with slight differences in tuning. Buy a Genesis if you want. We enjoyed the Sonata until it started showing premature unreliability.
I've been up with my 7 week old since 4am and haven't slept a second. The second your video was cast onto the TV she descended into a deep calm slumber. I'm not sure what this means for your newborn demographic/metrics.
I love the Genesis GV80 Coupe; however, I hate the way that the dealer network is set up right now. It's basically handled like just another Hyundai---which, for a segment like this, you don't really want. If you want to compete with Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, or even Infiniti, you gotta completely separate the luxury brands from their sister "consumer" brands.
Disagree. Some dealerships are offering valet service...pick up and drop off a loaner until the service is complete. Drop off your vehicle at your home or office and will even do a minor detailing, including vacuuming the interior. They realize that many affluent value their most prized commodity, which is their time. You can keep your espresso at the dealership...happily trade that for valet service
I appreciate that Hyundai put so much effort in building this brand from scratch but the character and language of this brand seems a bit fake and tacky. They are trying too hard look like an affordable Bentley from the grille, the quilt pattern and even down to the logo. At least Lexus, Acura, Infiniti has carved out a vision of what Japanese luxury can be; even though they are slacking a bit in recent years.
The GV80 was styled by a former Bentley designers (Luc Donckerwoke, who also designed Audi R8, Lamborghini etc.) and Sangup Lee (designed the new Camaro and former Bentley designer too). So you can't really say 'Genesis' is "copying" Bentley if the actual designers are ACTUAL Bentley designers. Of course they are going to bring over their design ethos and philosophy over...that is to be expected. Aside from Lexus which is bland, it's now almost laughable to say Acura and Infiniti have "carved out a vision of what Japanes luxury can be". Most knowledgeable auto enthusiasts would probably say Genesis has over taken Acura and Inifiti already... When the hybrids come out in the next 1 to 2 years, they're going to eat into Lexus sales as well. Heard it here first
It's possible in some areas like technology available for cheaper, powerful drivetrains, etc. But none of my Acura ever caught on fire, or my Honda products, not even lawn cate or generators or pumps. None of my family Lexus or Toyota ever caught fire 🔥....but.....

Just say no to that frozen matte paint. I have it on my motorcycle, and it looks great, but it's really sensitive. It's not too much of a bother on something as small as a bike, but on an SUV...forget it.
@avery4528 - came here to say that. If you get a matte paint, you definitely need a matte ppf wrap. However, if you do that, you may as well save the money of the matte paint and get a regular paint and do the matte ppf wrap. The look will be the same. But then, you could choose the nice red or blue and have that as a matte color, which they don't have as an option.
I test drove a couple of these when I was SUV shopping in 2022. Ultimately we went with a Durango SRT however. The interior space is quite a bit lower quality but the powertrain and rear seating space more than makes up for it. I just can't help but feel like if you're getting a car this size you should have the option to occasionally seat 6 normal sized humans for those edge cases where you might need to.

You can criticize Genesis all you want, but the fact of the matter is that they’re essentially a standalone luxury brand that happens to be owned by Hyundai/Kia. And that’s why I like them.
@@cbotten106 If you share no parts and no platforms and could very well exist on your own because your cars are built from the ground up to be uniquely yours, I’d say you’re standalone. Lexus doesn’t build anything uniquely Lexus since everything is sourced from Toyota parts bin. I don’t want to be reminded of the Camry or RAV4 underneath my car when I spend big money on something and want it to feel like an accomplishment. Who’s BMW sharing parts with when building the 3 series? Who’s Mercedes sharing parts with? Nobody. And Genesis is like that. That’s why I like their cars. That’s just my take. I’m not a fan of mainstream-turned luxury cars because they weren’t designed to be luxury first, and thus you can likely feel those mainstream roots and compromises whether it’s driving feel, interior, power, performance, etc. I rememeber when I drove an ES and a Camry back to back, and I really couldn’t tell the difference while the ES was more. Meanwhile, I drove a 3 series after and that was night and day different from the ES. So yeah, that’s my take.
@@KNRS927 Well, the 3-series has a very different intent than the ES. If you like sporty the ES in a non-starter. Lexus definitely doesn't do sporty as well as BMW. I do feel the exclusive RWD platforms for Genesis models does give luxury credibility vis-a-vis the Toyota-based offerings at the bottom of Lexus' lineup. But BMW does platform share with Mini at the bottom of their lineup as well, so it is not so clear cut. But I take your point. Somehow my reply to your comment got deleted so it looks like you replied to yourself....weird.
@@cbotten106 it does have a different intent, but it’s built from the ground up to be a luxury car through and through, and there’s no mainstream roots. Meanwhile, the ES is built on the same platform as the Camry, and a top trim Camry is really nice. So why pay more for an ES when you can get the fully loaded Camry and it’s the same car and cheaper? The GV80 isn’t just a gussied up Telluride/Palisade or Santa Fe/Sorento, and that’s what the GV80 would be if Genesis went the Lexus route. BMW does parts share and I’d be ok with if if it’s a few models, or the differentiation is so clear that the cars feel like different vehicles. Issue is Lexus platform shares on everything but the 2 flagship cars, and the differentiation doesn’t seem that clear. Hence, that’s why I feel Genesis is more standalone luxury than Lexus/Acura. Thats just me. Those exclusive Genesis platforms just feel special and make you feel like you actually got something special.

My local Hyundai dealer officially separated itself from Genesis earlier this year. They actually built two new dealerships along the same street separated by an Acura dealership, which surprised me. And the service has improved too.
I think when this becomes the standard people will feel a lot better about dropping $85K on one of these.

The sponsor segment is the best I’ve ever heard😭, doesn’t even feel sponsored and is genuinely funny because it incorporates what makes y’all so special
They aren’t reputable because they depreciate harder than all of the others and are horribly unreliable with recalls every month.
I’m always going to see genesis people as “couldn’t or didn’t want to get a luxury car but got a luxury car anyway” segment.
They go for Lexus because they’re bulletproof and have nothing to prove to anyone. They go to the Germans because they’re still status symbols and can still be fun to drive.
genesis' biggest problem right now is their dealer network, or lack of.

2.0t
Genesis = Theta II
Hyundai = Theta θ
3.3t
Genesis = Lambda II
Hyundai = Lambda Λ
While the naming convention is similar, none of the (modern) Genesis lineup have had any widespread motor issues.

Not true about Lexus/Toyota. They do catch fire and even explode now! No Genesis has ever done that.

Just say no to that frozen matte paint. I have it on my motorcycle, and it looks great, but it's really sensitive. It's not too much of a bother on something as small as a bike, but on an SUV...forget it.

@@avery4528My thoughts exactly.

You can criticize Genesis all you want, but the fact of the matter is that they’re essentially a standalone luxury brand that happens to be owned by Hyundai/Kia. And that’s why I like them.
But if you share your house (and sales staff and service bays and staff) with a Hyundai/Kia dealer are you really, truly "standalone"?
