1:21:20 - recommendation for a safe to keep watches in?

1:24:59 - what shortfalls, if any, did you notice with the Honda Civic Type R (FK8) that you would address via aftermarket modifications?
1:26:01 - I've sacrificed a fun winter car (STI hatch) for two fun cars for three seasons (997, hot-rodded MR2); would you sell the MR2 to help fund a GR Corolla or keep them both and buy the best STI hatch that you could?

We bought a Odyssey before our first kid. Updated it with the 2nd kid. We also have 2 large dogs. There's nothing better for family transport. I had a 6spd X3 with the single kid as my car. With the 2nd kid, I downsized to a E91 manual M sport wagon for the 2nd kid. Small cars work fine with kids. I don't get why people think otherwise, but I see it all the time. Kids are older and we no longer have a minivan for the family hauler, but now we have a trailer to compensate for the lack of cargo room for the big trips. A $1500 trailer is easier to use and better to have than a pickup or oversized SUV. I also don't get why people don't do this, especially when they make folding trailers.

With the big cars for a first kid thing - we have a GR Yaris that I have had since my Son was 6 months old and is now 4 and we just Swapped a 2010 Civic to a Honda N-Box Kei van.
You adapt to the circumstances in front of you, both our cars are big enough for the full family and the weekly shop and back when my Son was in a stroller we got an amazing fold up one from Gb Pockit.
There are occasions when you can't collect some stuff, either with my Wife and Son or for very big things in the N-Box even with the seats down (huge amount of space inside). When these scenarios come up a few times a year then we just pay for delivery.
Having previously had estate cars too I do occasionally miss them, but actually my practical experience has been I really don't need them as often as I thought I would.

Devil's advocate on the size of vehicles: when I was a Mazda salesman lots of people swapped their CX-5s for CX-9s because rear-facing infant seats are so long that the front passenger would have to move the seat all the way forward. Midsize crossovers like the CX-9 have long rear doors and sliding second row seating that make it easier/safer/more comfortable for all. That being said something like a Camry would have enough rear leg room for the child seat and enough trunk space for the stroller.

The discussion around needing a large car for when you have kids made had me thinking how we had a Honda Fit when we had our first. When we were expecting our third, we got a Rav4 hybrid and we had three car seats in the back (two forward, one rear facing). And minivans are the answer. I bought an old Mazda MPV and I hated driving it because it was a but but you can not love the thing for just having all the room.

My gf has 2 young kids and while I have a sedan (e39 540i/6 sport individual) and I want a different car because I keep the car super clean and kids can make that tough. A full size truck is an easy choice and checks the boxes, and allows track car towing, going to the mountains/lake. Trucks and full size SUVs are just so big and boring to drive lol.

Like holy shit, tech companies literally tried to keep this from happening and tried to make a universal remote so it was basically the same in every car!

Unfortunately my fellow Europeans are coming around to the realization that when everyone drives an SUV they no longer have the biggest car on the road so they find themselves really desperately NEEDING a GLS or an X7 or even a Ram 2500 for daily use which are becoming more and more common around here. "Space and fuel prices be damned MY CAR NEEDS TO BE BIGGER!"
I now see multiple full size trucks on my commute in Berlin every day and I have yet to see one with more than one person in it let alone any cargo on the bed.

The "you're just getting old" is rage bait. Most young people in the U.S. can't even afford a new car let alone a high end Mercedes. So if we're all in our late 30s and "old," then who the hell are the cars being built for? The Mercedes system in my late mother's G550 sucks pretty badly. It just isn't intuitive. And having little mini track pads on the wheel seem pretty unnecessary. My brother got a Cybertruck and it seems to me Teslas have a dangerous amount of settings tied to the screen and barely anything else. There's no way for a person who hasn't memorized the OS to get around in one of those to do anything safely while driving unless they use the voice commands.

Diesel is still getting bad rep - sounds like, because you're in the US where jars of gallons cost nothing - but in its long line of premium diesel engines - BMW, as one of the world's undeniably premium ENGINE builders - continued its line of diesels from M57 - into N57 - and then into B57 - all being 3 litre inline 6 cylinder diesels ranging from E39 era (with the M57) and into the modern times - with the B57 - achieving phenomenal power and torque - and laughably low consumption, esp. for barges like the 7series. Also Mazda developed a somewhat recent diesel engine - and there are many more, even from Detroit. So no, DIesel is not dead - and hopefeully, the governments can pull their heads out of their green .... well.. backs. Second. Battery chargers/tenders DON'T MATTER if they're Porsche-branded or not. Been using Noco chargers on two of my diesel (of course) cars - one with AGM battery, the other - usual (but large) regular lead-acid type. Noco detects the AGM (or any other battery technology that it's designed for, refer to the owner's manual) - and charges the battery without overcooking it, even if the battery has been left for several months. If a tender was on the battery for a sufficient time (like 2-3 days) - and AFTER that - the car's dash says something about the onboard voltage - (that it's too low) - there's something wrong with the charger/tender. CTEK or Noco might matter - CTEK or Porsche-branded CTEK - cannot matter. There's another reason for that - the Environmental Act (of all places) of the US - expressly prohibits OEM manufacturers of various equipment (initially intended against the "let's do whatever the F we want" by John Deere, but refers to all machinery, incl. passenger cars) - so the act specifically prohibits the OEMs from pressing the user into "propriatary" equipment when maintaining their cars. Yes there are many tools which OEMs manufacture for their cars (but there are cheaper tools of the same quality doing the same job without the OEM badge) - but you cannot have "only this type" of software or hardware - to be able to maintain or repair the piece of equipment that YOU OWN. Louis Rossmann in his "right to repair" campaign talked about this several times - and if it's in legislation - hey, you (even Porsche!!) must obey this. EIther way - thanks for another great podcast from Latvia.

...on the mercedes c63 topic of emissions and thinking about the future: What if a manufacturer kept its more powerful engine as long as it was always paired with an electric motor and the user could have a monthly quota of use of the engine, any use over that the user would have to pay to offset their carbon footprint and the manufacturer would act as a middle man and have the certification tool within the car and in turn make some money in the middle, dystopia much? (i mean bmw is charging for activating stuff already in the car anyways)

Who are these people bringing up the Cadillac Blackwing every podcast? I haven't even seen a Cadillac dealer in 20 years, much less an non-SUV vehicle that's not 30+ years old and driven by someone who is 80.

Diesel fuel is the best solution as its energy is so high per gallon, thats why if you wanna move cargo/people...
    truck=diesel, train=diesel, ship=diesel, bus=diesel, tank=diesel, plane(and abrams)= JetA which is very close to diesel.
I bet it's not used purely because of stigma.
