    I was always confused by them saying she looks even more like a wolf then balto. She is more dog then wolf unless Jenna is hiding something. Then there is the fact I am sure people would be eager to have the pup of the dog who saved their children.

      Haha no problem. I actually did like Balto 2 though since it was one of those childhood movies that I watched and kept re-watching several times for a while. I guess as a kid everything seems more magical in general and this movie kinda fit into how my mind worked at the time. But after re-watching it recently and then seeing your review I kinda realize how ridiculous it really was. But at least it was less laughable than Balto 3 XD

      I'd argue that Balto 3 was the closest to a sequel to the original. Balto 2 felt more like a spin-off than a proper sequel.
      As in Balto 3, the events of the first movie are directly mentioned, whereas in Balto 2 it felt like the first movie didn't happen as Balto still had doubts about his mixed heritage. Not to mention the villain in the first movie was actually evil and menacing

    I actually like the ideas in the movie. I especially like the part of Balto letter go of Aleu that's a message to adults of when it's time to let your kids have their own life. But it was just a matter of overall execution in my mind that makes the movie unfortunately not as good as it could've been.
    If it was made by a creative team not driven to make some quick money like, (actually almost every movie studio!) it would've worked better.
    I for 1 feel the filler moments should've instead been replaced with more scenes to fleshed out the rushed last 3rd of the movie.
    At least it takes itself more seriously & has far less songs (& the few songs they use are at least not as annoying to listen to) then pretty much every Land Before Time sequel.
    It's also more watchable & tries to give the audience more of a moral lesson then eveyr Alpha & Omega sequel.

    • @ShadeNocturne
      @ShadeNocturne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Mostly agreed here.
      At least they tried something NEW and the ideas weren't all bad. It needed better execution for sure. Movies take so many people and opinions clashing and flowing to work, it's a miracle when one is great or even just good.
      Sometimes it hurts knowing how many movies' potentials were squandered.
      ...Press f boys. Press f.
      Also I appreciate the comment and insightful opinions. It's a breath of fresh air as well haha, hope you're having a good day/night and I do hope you enjoyed the video overall :)

    I've always wondered why the dream sequences were w/ Balto and not Aleu, since it was her so called "destiny". Her role is really downplayed until the end. Maybe it's implied she saw the same visions as here dad, as hinted with the bear scene and the one were she saw the ice bridge, but its so damn VAGUE! But the movie is called Balto 2, not Aleu 2.
    And you're message is 100% right, and this movies ending can be somewhat harmful to any young mind who thinks too deep into it.

    • @ShadeNocturne
      @ShadeNocturne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah, he seemed kind of tacked onto the story for the sake of the title, and Aleu's story certainly suffered for it. (Not that they had all of her story thought out that well, either)
      Also thanks, I was worried I came off a little preachy at the end, there. :)

      Is it just me or are none of "Steven Spielburg's animated movies allowed to have GOOD sequels. Think about it, "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West", the endless ass pile of "Land Before Time" sequels, and now this.
      If you ask me, "Balto 2" has the same problem that "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" had. That being that their plots are far too out of character to be a sequel to what came before. In Fievel's case, it went from a simple story about a Jewish Mice family migrating to the USA and their son being separated from them and stopping at nothing to find them while also helping the mice put a bunch of hungry cats in their places............to an uninspired unoriginal unfocused goofy western. Balto meanwhile went from a simple but effective story about a wolf dog battling his way to bring a supply of medicine back to a town full of dying children...............to this barrage of prophecy, supernatural crap. I can't tell if these were really Spielburg's ideas or if Universal forced him to slap familiar faces onto these plots and call it a day.

    Shade, don't you think that these so called sequels should be called, midquels instead? Because in the first movie, there were two live action segments that were supposed to take place after Balto won live and won the race. Remember?

  • @daliborjovanovic510
    @daliborjovanovic510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I hear ya. I personally really enjoyed Balto as a kid, still do. Then I saw this sequel and I was.....left confused. Spirits? Vision quests? Wolves that can merge with trees? Magical ice bridges? This is a Balto sequel, right? I think what annoyed me the most is how the whole cast from the previous film was either sidelined or completely forgotten about.
    Speaking of that? Why wasn't Steele in this movie? Considering how vindictive and unsubtly mentally unstable he was in the first film, you'd think after his humiliation in the first film, this raving narcissist would devote the rest of his life to destroying Balto and everyone he cares about? Most Disney sequels face the issue of having killed off their villain in the first film and are forced to replace them with some forgettable nobody, but this didn't have that problem. Plus, both films would have been a lot more fun if they had Jim Cummings chewing the scenery as the main antagonist. Considering how Niju and his three lackeys pay such a likeness to Steele and his three goons, I'm wondering if Steel was set to appear in this film but was axed after the script got a "spirit quest" rewrite?

    I like Aleu's design and how this story didn't give her a sexy wolf to be her cliche romantic interest. That's all I really like about this movie and maybe the fact they're willing to explore the wolf theme a little more than in the original Balto, albeit in questionable ways. I've been curious for a while now, how do you edit your videos? I've been trying to learn video editing on stuff like premiere but I don't know how to do stuff like put letters or other objects in the foreground while a video is playing in the background. Or make objects move across the screen also while a video is playing in the background. Could you explain to me how you do it?

      As for editing, thanks man lol I appreciate wanting some help and all, best I can do without doing a full tutorial is you create a new legacy title and use the x and y controls in effects to position the text/image, then all you need to do is toggle the keyframes to control where and how long the text or inage moves.

    This sequel suffers from the same problem that "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" suffers from. In that they both only act as sequels to their respective previous films, but only by name. They also have the misfortune of having fanboys who swear by these sequels who 9 times outta 10 haven't seen the originals nor could they even be bothered to do so. If you want a sequel to "Balto" that at the very least has the spirit of the original? Watch "Balto 3: Wings of Change". It doesn't hold a candle to the first film, but its less headache inducing then "Balto 2".

    I forgot how weird the movie was. It was one of my favorite movies as kid. Now, looking back, I realize it wasn’t all that great. However, while listening to your review, something hit me. What if this movie was about death?
    Okay, I know it’s weird but the spiritual and magical elements make a lot more sense if you look at it through the lens of Alu is dying and Balto is doing his best to prevent that. Balto could’ve been trying to overcome trials to get his dead daughter back, with each animal being representative of different obstacles. It kind of reminds me of that Greek myth where this man overcame multiple trials to get his dead wife back only to loose her. The fox could be the one to tell Balto where the river styx is, the raven could be death himself watching over everything, the wolverines might be the fates, the bear could be Cerberus, and that wolf at the end could be death.
    Idk, I just feel like it actually fits as a story about a parent trying to get their child back from the clutches of death more than what it was.

    • @ShadeNocturne

      Interesting idea. Even if done poorly, it could still have salvaged most of the otherwise strangely spiritual plotline. As for the rest? Rewrite out Boris, extend the runtime, and build up this clan earlier.
      you almost have to wonder, why not just make a movie about this and forget the balto series tie-in?

    Hi! A long time ago, when I was probably 7 years old, I watched this movie for the first time and oh boy I got several heart attacks while watching this movie. My first heart attack was Boris screaming for Balto to wake up. My second heart attack was the Wolverine totem on the totem pole. I can COMPLETELY agree with you that the Wolverine totem is very creepy and terrifying, I even had nightmares from that thing! Then I got scared of the totem pole again right before Balto's second dream. Then after Aleu runs away, and Balto receives his first dream, hearing Aniu say the totem meanings, I yet again got another heart attack, from Aniu's Howl as soon as the Caribou totem disappeared. I also got another heart attack during "The Grand Design", which the totem pole with the Wolverine appears again. My final heart attack was from Aniu's second Howl at the end of the film. Thankfully 5 years later and just Yesterday, I finally conquered my fears of what gave me heart attacks in the film. Overall, the Film was pretty good, and because this movie is kinda similar to Inuit Culture, I like it even more. But still, that freaking Wolverine on the totem pole is still a little terrifying, despite conquering my fear.

    To reiterate from a video I previously watched on it:
    The most unrealistic part of this movie is the main conflict. You can’t tell me a town in ALASKA wouldn’t want a dog that looks like a wolf. Huskies, cut and dry, are basically Aleu in a nutshell, without the heritage. A musher or Hunter would absolutely love to have her, you can’t convince me otherwise. She would just look like a gray husky to them, because wolf-dogs look like giant sphepherd husky crosses.

    I’m a religious person, but I 100% agree with you on the Destiny thing. So many people think it’s a good message to tell kids “don’t worry! Everything happens the way it’s supposed to happen because God exists.” No... that’s a flimsy excuse for people who just don’t think it’s possible for them to ever make a mistake. The Disney short Small One handled the concept of taking part in something great so much better. The donkey was involved in a historical and spiritually significant event, not because of destiny, but because he was in the right place at the right time. It was still involved, and it was still an important event, but it wasn’t born only for that purpose.

      Shade Nocturne also, I learned this lesson a long time ago when I was going to church one morning, my brother and I are animal lovers at heart, and a puppy ran under my mom’s car while we were driving leaving him quite dead. My brother cried about it rather profusely and told a lady at church that he was crying because we’d killed a puppy by accident. The church lady had the audacity to suggest that we were sent by God to kill that puppy because it was suffering.
      That is bullshit. The puppy was perfectly happy looking and it’s Death was down to it not understanding the consequence of running under a moving car. That’s like saying “well, the Nazis were just ending the suffering of all those people, cause that’s how you end someone’s suffering!”
      Voltaire’s Candide has a great moment where this guy who insists that everything happens for the greater good gets serious comeuppance.

    • @ShadeNocturne

That’s dangerous thinking that causes cultures to stagnate. I wrote a novel several years ago, and in that novel, I basically tried to make humans and immortals separated by immortals having predestined lives and fate, while humans, a far weaker, less powerful species has free will, and is therefore more likely to change the world in spite of their feeble existence.

    There's something I noticed about Balto 2 - Wolf Quest, there is a lot of New Age tropes in this film, you could practically play New Age bingo watching Wolf Quest. To summarise, there is cultural appropriation of Native American heritage, Aleu as the Indigo Child, plus there is channelling, crystals, frequency, magical thinking, ESP, appeal to nature and everything is connected. All Balto 2 needed was pyramids, but I think the totem pole was the stand in for that, afterall, they are monuments, and the totem pole spirits fill the role of chakras, as something destined to guide Balto and Aleu to some esoteric prophecy. This I believe is why you notice metaphysics, Native American woo, and energy, these are things common to New Age, and I really like your closing comments, it's more beneficial than what Balto 2 - Wolf Quest was trying to achieve. By the way, that half-assed prophecy could easily apply to Aleu's siblings, they are wolf hybrids and do not know it, just because they look like Jenna, does not mean they didn't inherent wolf traits from Balto, technically, _all_ of Jenna and Balto's pups are second-generation wolf hybrids, but I suspect Aleu was someone's OC written into the film, that could explain it.

    This wasn’t pointed, but they fucked up Balto’s design. He has white eyes in this movie! When you FUCK UP YOUR MAIN CHARACTER’S DESIGN then your movie definitely sucks. Also they used the white wolf, and then shoehorned it in as Balto’s mother. Jesus they should’ve used the director of the last movie, or make this one’s director watch it first.
    They also said Alue looked more like a wolf than Balto, when she had traits(such as blue eyes) that wolves can’t have. She even looks like a recoloured Female Balto. If they were going with Alue looked a lot more like a wolf, they could’ve made her more wolf sized. What makes things worst, HOW IS THE TOWN OF NOME’S HERO’S KIDS NOT MARKETABLE? I thought people would jump at the chance at getting one of the hero’s kids. Especially Alue who looks the most like Balto.

    I jusy recently rewatched the first then watched the second and I could not feel extremely disappointed in what I saw. Basically with what everything you said I agree with. But there are two things that bothered me over anything in the entire film.
    First, Jennas and Baltos voice actors changed in this. I thought the voiced for them in the first movie were a great choice (Jenna especially) but in this I feel their forcing way to hard to sound like the first movie.
    Second is the design of Balto and Jenna. Was it a different team of artists? Sure probably. This still doesnt strain from the fact they, atleast to me, look nothing alike. Balto in this doesn't look as good as he did in the first. In the first he looked like an outcast which is how he was portraid. If they kept this design I feel I would have cared a little bit more. Jenna though, she had the worst overhaul. In the first movie her design look pretty. She was portraid as a beautifull character and it worked. In the second I feel while its trying to imply, it doesnt work. Her face is not at all the same, the eyes are always happy and the rest of it is just ew.
    One last side thing is I don't like Aleus voice in it. Going into this Aleu is my favourite character design so I was expecting a better voice but thats not what I had gotten. Atleast her puppy voice made sense.
    I am scared to watch the third one

      I totally agree! Jenna's design was inspired by Belgian actress Audrey Hepburn. Even Rosie, her owner, looks like a little redhead Audrey! But the sequels made Jenna look so plain!!! And Jodi Benson is NO Bridget Fonda!
      And Lacey chabert's whiney Eliza voice is so grating to the ears! I've heard her normal voice before, so she has no excuse to make Alue sound like a little kid!!! They should've gotten Grey Delisle or Tara Strong to voice her instead!!!

    Aleu was always one of my favorite childhood animals. I still find her relatable at times.
    It’s also cool that the same one who voiced Eliza Thornberry voiced Aleu too (Lacey Chabert).
    I also find it funny that the length of this video is 20:02 , which is the year this film came out.

    I love this film mainly for nostalgia. But your right the plot makes literally no sense at all. Aleu had no plot. Baltos role is confusing. Why is magic in this film? There is no solid plot. I feel for you man

    Sadly didn't.

    Don't you wish that this should be an HD treatment in order to grade the colors naturally?

    • @eugeneketaminekrebs3403
      @eugeneketaminekrebs3403 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alexander The Great: An HD remaster of this movie wouldn’t mean colors would be graded. All it would have done was make them a bit sharper. I think the film was actually made to look that drab. Now, supposedly there is an HD version of this film and the 3rd movie, but I don’t know if it is an upscale or not.

    Do dragons start out as little drakes what does that mean exactly

    • @ShadeNocturne
      @ShadeNocturne  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a drake is a type of dragon (a broader term for a certain bodystyle among types of dragons)
      So certain dragons are drakes.

    If you look at Lady and the tramp 2 Scamp's Adventure you could see that Scamp ran away cause he wanted to be a wild dog like his dad
