The story involves the four chasing a den of robbers out of a house, and taking it for themselves. They work together to drive out the robbers, in the same manner as in the movie.

Normally don't like things being cut from other releases, but fully agree not having the part of a human clearly wanting some cat and in that way. That can stay as a deleated section I want to erase from my mind.
The sad thing about this picture is that it could've been good. "The Musicians of Breman" is not a hard story to adapt into something. Hell, Lamb Chop did it for an edutainment PC game in the early 90s. Also, the music is actually well produced, with some good people backing it (fucking B.B. King, man!). Instead, they turned a classic Grimm fairy tale into a bizarre oddity that includes polarizing CGI that doesn't mesh well and an evil corporation that doesn't even know the meaning of the word "subtle". Awesome review as always, Shade!
The review is great! A small notion: the thing the hunter have at the beggining isn't coke, it's tobacco (that's why it's colored black and not white). In the old times people used to inhale it like that. Which is still not exactly kid-friendly, but not as bad as, well... coke. Also, I really enjoyed the ways of fixing the characters you've suggested. Especially when you supposed the rooster could've felt guilt because of the cat's mention of a betrayal of a loved one - that would've made a good character arc. Also, what the HELL was that deleted scene? The cat literally shook her butt, trying to seduce the guy, what on earth?? What a nice message to kids from the movie's only female main character...

I'm honestly confused why they even went with the Fearless Four name, especially when the source material's title of "Town Musicians Of Bremen" is way more distinct and relevant to the story. The film came out in 1997, so I doubt they were trying to make people think it was a superhero movie. It _could_ be a reference to hip hop group in the 80's called the Fearless Four, but why would they use a pre-existing band's name when said band had no affiliation with the movie? Especially when the cast voicing the animals are all famous singers themselves.

Tortellini The Rooster. Dr. Greed English Dub is Ian James Corlett. Same guy who voiced Goku in the Dragonball Z Ocean Dub and Cheetor in Beast Wars and Beast Machines. 22:00 A Kurusu? Aww. That is adorable to hear, good for Sir Shade Nocturne. Even the film had terrible writing and bad CGI at times. The soundtrack, 2D animation and main character designs are actually good. At least this movie and Felix the Cat the Movie have one thing in common, both have amazing soundtracks! At least with Felix, that character's owner eventually managed to cobble together an official soundtrack with some of the master tapes he managed to recover. It's not everything that's in that movie, but it's something at least, we get to hear the music Princess Oriana danced to more clearly now. This movie however would need a miracle for something like that to ever happen.

I actually checked out the original fable after watching the Musical Hell review of this movie, and I’ve been thinking of making my own animated interpretation someday. 😎 I was playing with the idea of giving it a western or film-noir tone, and playing up how Bremen is controlled by organized crime (like a modern-day mafia) and after our heroes scare a few of them out of their hideout, they spend the rest of the story making music by day, and fighting crime by night. 🤔
The Bremen Town Musicians seems ripe for adaptation…. Shame that outside of the decent animation and good musical numbers, this mess ended up the way it did. Nice review, bud.

Felt more like a 'song that turn the evil beast' ploy more than *Unzips trowsers* "A cat is also fine." Ok the latter is just straight funny in a ridiculous sort of way, ALMOST as funny as the idea that Gwendoline gives a shiet about the other trapped animals. Felt like the chicken was better with the heart of gold character trait. A cawk with a good heart joke would work of several levels Might be bias, but mostly view cat characters as a "dont do shiet for the homies. Let me reiterate, Dont. Do. Shhiit. for the homies. -A Pimp named Slickback" " kind of way. All I got as rich cat Gwendolyn mourned her owner, now other humans want her dead, now shes out on her own. Maybe if her owner was some wildlife conservationist and doing this to keep her memory alive in her heart, maybe itd buy it. Closest thing I see if she sees more evil humans and she wants to do good just to spite them
I'm glad someone else mentioned the Town Musicians of Bremen connection. I tried to watch all the way through but it's like 3 AM and I can't make it. So there are points I can't know if you surprise know by the end. All the animal voice actors are musicians, and professional ones. That's why they have good music. The song "Powertool" literally sounds the same in German, they just changed to English lyrics. I like it, it's needlessly but nicely camp. Buster and Gwen are, to each other and, actually, all others apparently, Harkness compliant. They are of age for their species, have sapience, and can meaningfully communicate. And since this is fiction, that means it is just a romance. They mutually pass the Harkness test for each other. It's like getting upset that Rita and Hugo from Jungledyret Hugo have such a close relationship. And they're only able to speak to each other and other animals. They have less Harkness proof. It's a silly thing but this always gets to me. Harkness Compliance is an essential part of sci-fi and fantasy. Humans can be shown with elves and Klingons, and some even accept Caitians. That's humans and inhumans. Harkness test working as required.
This movie is like a fucking fever dream. Don’t get me wrong, I like the animation, the casting choice, especially the singers and the iconic Canadian actors like Garry Chalk, Scott McNeil, Ian James Corlett, etc. But the amount of weird and disturbing moments like Tortellini fantasising himself as a fat penguin-like chicken with an interchangeable face, to putting poor Fred in a torture room with blades covered by gloves to tickle him for whatever reason, plus Tortellini going through the machine on some psychedelic acid trip was just fucking weird. The latter scene I speak of was advertised on Cartoon Network long ago, with my brain racking years later. Liked Powertool’s design, but he looked as if he was a character from Space Jam or some other hand drawn late 90s to early 2000s Warner Bros film, or even an early DreamWorks film like Antz. Funny how Munich Animation also worked on the Danish film Help! I’m A Fish, though.
I watched the movie when I was young, too young to check all the sexual connotations. I thought it was ok but yeah, it is very weird and in english it sounds even weirder. But I like the dark style and Spawn as torture master.
I remember watching this movie a few times as a kid on tv, though I didn't remember much beyond the first 30 minutes and the ending song. I also recall going "The fuck?" when the CGI singing robo-centaur showed up.

@@ShadeNocturne there’s a few, the first one I found was on complete accident because I got board one day and remembered seeing fan art of a blue dragon from some obscure thing called wings of fire while researching for graphic arts, I saw a review of that thing on a random obscure TH-cam channel I was browsing and clicked it, I thought oh it’s a children’s story that is some dumb bland chosen one thing where the mistake of the chosen ones proves themselves, instead it went in what I could only describe as the direction of a robot chicken sketch then became the darkest thing imaginable, the memory of this shock stuck with me, there’s one about owls that i encountered but forgot the name of, I think there’s a couple more that I discovered but I can’t really remember them that well.

It’s a shame cuz I actually really liked this movie, and, as bonkers as it may sound, it was one of those movies that kept me sane during high school…. Then again the Open Season sequels also did that so I’m probably not the best person to judge

It's the performances of the main four and (most of) the songs that I find to be charming. But yeah, it's a whole mess after all that. It feels like an incomplete project that's never going to get a release. But hey, awesome review Shade! Can't wait to see what's next you have in mind!👍

Fun Fact: Germans often do incredibly weird stuff in animation. Judas and Jesus for example. Plus Grimm Brothers fairytales. They are horrific in their original form, in general, Germans can make very questionable stuff. Other than that Movie focused a bit too much on bland Characters, and not enough on trying to make Movie where, protagonists would learn on their own what's happening, challenging their moral compass in a way. Are you happy if you can't show sadness? Is you own ego worth emptiness it will leave in its wake, when reality breaks your delusions of grandeur? If you can't trust others because of few people who weren't worth it, can you truly avoid becoming Heartless - becoming those who wronged you? Are you willing to suppress your own insecurities, at the expense of those who will be unfortunate enough to be near you when you eventually break? It would've been all possible in this setting, with Antagonists being nothing more but Grim reflection of all four protagonists, with them talking to each other, using same thought processes, making them realize just how thin the line is between "tormented artists" and "sadistic exploitative manipulators" Hollywood angle would also work, if rooster would have been shown to slowly being groomed into the thought process of the old guy villain, showing how this exploitation goes on from generations, as well as showing how Egocentrism and Narcissism can justify any deed, in minds of those who let it take over their personalities. Showing how Old Hollywood elites Pick New Leaders by giving them emotional (and material) stakes in it
I LOVE the idea of trying to groom yet another evil person out of the Rooster bro, if ya work the Hollywood allegory for the villains that actually would help to add Eben further layers to the story. And of course be a great lesson to not trust people who exhibit negative qualities and promise the world, largely a great lesson for young kids and adults alike! Shame people like yourself weren't in charge. I don't get what happens that makes people say "yep. This draft is the final one, for sure."

I had to wait until I had finished my shift at work to offer my 2 cents. In the film, there are animals with human level of intelligence and are able to own property and enter contracts with humans. And also, animals are also working themselves to exhaustion for thier humans, such as the dog and donkey who escape. Are the animals second class in that world? How does one govern the laws between human and animal labor if they exist? As for the meat processing plant that also doubles as a recording studio, why isnt there more of an outrage from the citizens that consume human level intelligent animal meat? Sorry about that. I just really like learning about society and its governing ways.
Nah these are very good questions. The movie makes you ask them and never... really attempts to answer any of them XD but it's a cool thought experiment, for SURE!
Its interesting to see animated European movies get some coverage because outside of US, Japanese and on rare occasions French animation you never hear about them. I thought Felidae was pretty good. This though... yeah, I can see why this was forgotten.
I always appreciate when movie puts an interesting spin on an old fairy-tail like the Bremen town musicians in this case, but sadly this one missed the mark when it comes to the story which is sad. The idea is an interesting idea to put this old story into a more modern setting and the quality of the songs and animation is amazing, but the story isn't well written enough to match this quality, not even closely

Well, and the music. And the sometimes decent animation... that fluctuated in quality more than my relationship with me dad :( (jk, actually but yeah XD)
At least this movie and Felix the Cat the Movie have one thing in common, both have amazing soundtracks! At least with Felix, that character's owner eventually managed to cobble together an official soundtrack with some of the master tapes he managed to recover. It's not everything that's in that movie, but it's something at least, we get to hear the music Princess Oriana danced to more clearly now. This movie however would need a miracle for something like that to ever happen.
I will hope in vein for the release of a soundtrack 😭 but I agree, it's a bit of a pipedream.

I actually checked out the original fable after watching the Musical Hell review of this movie, and I’ve been thinking of making my own animated interpretation someday.

I was playing with the idea of giving it a western or film-noir tone, and playing up how Bremen is controlled by organized crime (like a modern-day mafia) and after our heroes scare a few of them out of their hideout, they spend the rest of the story making music by day, and fighting crime by night.

The seducing cat scene was more funny to me in a Bugs Bunny "no way this is gonna work-Oh damn" sort of way.
Felt more like a 'song that turn the evil beast' ploy more than *Unzips trowsers* "A cat is also fine." Ok the latter is just straight funny in a ridiculous sort of way, ALMOST as funny as the idea that Gwendoline gives a shiet about the other trapped animals. Felt like the chicken was better with the heart of gold character trait. A cawk with a good heart joke would work of several levels
Might be bias, but mostly view cat characters as a "dont do shiet for the homies. Let me reiterate, Dont. Do. Shhiit. for the homies. -A Pimp named Slickback" " kind of way. All I got as rich cat Gwendolyn mourned her owner, now other humans want her dead, now shes out on her own.
Maybe if her owner was some wildlife conservationist and doing this to keep her memory alive in her heart, maybe itd buy it. Closest thing I see if she sees more evil humans and she wants to do good just to spite them
I'm glad someone else mentioned the Town Musicians of Bremen connection. I tried to watch all the way through but it's like 3 AM and I can't make it. So there are points I can't know if you surprise know by the end.
All the animal voice actors are musicians, and professional ones. That's why they have good music.
The song "Powertool" literally sounds the same in German, they just changed to English lyrics. I like it, it's needlessly but nicely camp.
Buster and Gwen are, to each other and, actually, all others apparently, Harkness compliant. They are of age for their species, have sapience, and can meaningfully communicate. And since this is fiction, that means it is just a romance. They mutually pass the Harkness test for each other. It's like getting upset that Rita and Hugo from Jungledyret Hugo have such a close relationship. And they're only able to speak to each other and other animals. They have less Harkness proof. It's a silly thing but this always gets to me. Harkness Compliance is an essential part of sci-fi and fantasy. Humans can be shown with elves and Klingons, and some even accept Caitians. That's humans and inhumans. Harkness test working as required.

This movie is like a fucking fever dream. Don’t get me wrong, I like the animation, the casting choice, especially the singers and the iconic Canadian actors like Garry Chalk, Scott McNeil, Ian James Corlett, etc. But the amount of weird and disturbing moments like Tortellini fantasising himself as a fat penguin-like chicken with an interchangeable face, to putting poor Fred in a torture room with blades covered by gloves to tickle him for whatever reason, plus Tortellini going through the machine on some psychedelic acid trip was just fucking weird. The latter scene I speak of was advertised on Cartoon Network long ago, with my brain racking years later. Liked Powertool’s design, but he looked as if he was a character from Space Jam or some other hand drawn late 90s to early 2000s Warner Bros film, or even an early DreamWorks film like Antz. Funny how Munich Animation also worked on the Danish film Help! I’m A Fish, though.
I watched the movie when I was young, too young to check all the sexual connotations. I thought it was ok but yeah, it is very weird and in english it sounds even weirder. But I like the dark style and Spawn as torture master.

I remember watching this movie a few times as a kid on tv, though I didn't remember much beyond the first 30 minutes and the ending song. I also recall going "The fuck?" when the CGI singing robo-centaur showed up.

@@ShadeNocturne there’s a few, the first one I found was on complete accident because I got board one day and remembered seeing fan art of a blue dragon from some obscure thing called wings of fire while researching for graphic arts, I saw a review of that thing on a random obscure TH-cam channel I was browsing and clicked it, I thought oh it’s a children’s story that is some dumb bland chosen one thing where the mistake of the chosen ones proves themselves, instead it went in what I could only describe as the direction of a robot chicken sketch then became the darkest thing imaginable, the memory of this shock stuck with me, there’s one about owls that i encountered but forgot the name of, I think there’s a couple more that I discovered but I can’t really remember them that well.
Don't mind me, just making a list of my favorite comments.

It’s a shame cuz I actually really liked this movie, and, as bonkers as it may sound, it was one of those movies that kept me sane during high school…. Then again the Open Season sequels also did that so I’m probably not the best person to judge
Anyone can like the movie! I didn't, but it had good qualities for sure! The music and some of the character designs, and the voice actors certainly did pretty okay all things considered.

It's the performances of the main four and (most of) the songs that I find to be charming. But yeah, it's a whole mess after all that. It feels like an incomplete project that's never going to get a release.

Fun Fact: Germans often do incredibly weird stuff in animation. Judas and Jesus for example. Plus Grimm Brothers fairytales. They are horrific in their original form, in general, Germans can make very questionable stuff.
Other than that Movie focused a bit too much on bland Characters, and not enough on trying to make Movie where, protagonists would learn on their own what's happening, challenging their moral compass in a way.
Are you happy if you can't show sadness?
Is you own ego worth emptiness it will leave in its wake, when reality breaks your delusions of grandeur?
If you can't trust others because of few people who weren't worth it, can you truly avoid becoming Heartless - becoming those who wronged you?
Are you willing to suppress your own insecurities, at the expense of those who will be unfortunate enough to be near you when you eventually break?
It would've been all possible in this setting, with Antagonists being nothing more but Grim reflection of all four protagonists, with them talking to each other, using same thought processes, making them realize just how thin the line is between "tormented artists" and "sadistic exploitative manipulators"
Hollywood angle would also work, if rooster would have been shown to slowly being groomed into the thought process of the old guy villain, showing how this exploitation goes on from generations, as well as showing how Egocentrism and Narcissism can justify any deed, in minds of those who let it take over their personalities. Showing how Old Hollywood elites Pick New Leaders by giving them emotional (and material) stakes in it
I LOVE the idea of trying to groom yet another evil person out of the Rooster bro, if ya work the Hollywood allegory for the villains that actually would help to add Eben further layers to the story. And of course be a great lesson to not trust people who exhibit negative qualities and promise the world, largely a great lesson for young kids and adults alike!
Shame people like yourself weren't in charge. I don't get what happens that makes people say "yep. This draft is the final one, for sure."

In the film, there are animals with human level of intelligence and are able to own property and enter contracts with humans.
And also, animals are also working themselves to exhaustion for thier humans, such as the dog and donkey who escape.
Are the animals second class in that world?
How does one govern the laws between human and animal labor if they exist?
As for the meat processing plant that also doubles as a recording studio, why isnt there more of an outrage from the citizens that consume human level intelligent animal meat?

I always appreciate when movie puts an interesting spin on an old fairy-tail like the Bremen town musicians in this case, but sadly this one missed the mark when it comes to the story which is sad. The idea is an interesting idea to put this old story into a more modern setting and the quality of the songs and animation is amazing, but the story isn't well written enough to match this quality, not even closely
