On day 7, we tackled the formidable Kuari Pass, braving extreme weather conditions with thick snow, fog, and biting winds. 📆 Day 1: 24 february
📍 Starting place: Wan (2,429m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Bungi Bungalow (3,174m)
📈 Total distance: 14km
🏔️ Max elevation 3,174m
❄️ Difficulty: The initial ascent is easy about 675m of positive gradient but in Kukhin Pass it is snowy and we have to open a route and climb in some parts.
📆 Day 2: 25 february
📍 Starting place: Bungi Bungalow (3,174m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Sutol (2,187m)
📈 Total distance: 11km
🏔️ Max elevation 3,174m
❄️ Difficulty: On this day there is a 1,125m descent through the snow, which slows our pace.
📆 Day 3: 26 february
📍 Starting place: Sutol (2,187m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Ramni (2,843m)
📈 Total distance: 26km
🏔️ Max elevation: 2,843m
❄️ Difficulty: We cross valleys and villages with a lot of unevenness (970m elevation gain + 660m elevation loss), there are many km but there is no snow and therefore there is not too much difficulty.
📆 Day 4: 27 february
📍 Starting place: Ramni (2,843m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Jhinji (2,084m)
📈 Total distance: 12km
🏔️ Max elevation: 3,214m
❄️ Difficulty: We walked through the snow all day, crossing Chechni Binayakk Pass at 3,214m high. It was not technically difficult, but the heavy snowfall and fog made us go slow.
📆 Day 5: 28 february
📍 Starting place: Jhinji (2,084m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Pana (2,454m)
📈 Total distance: 11km
🏔️ Max elevation: 2,545m
❄️ Difficulty: We start the descent of the valley about 400m elevation loss and then ascend the following valley 720m elevation Gain, without snow and by a road that is under construction, we had to deviate a little from the route.
📆 Day 6: 29 february
📍 Starting place: Pana (2,454m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Sartoli (3,050m)
📈 Total distance: 4km
🏔️ Max elevation: 3,090m
❄️ Difficulty: 600m of positive gradient but before reaching the pass there is no snow, we follow the path of Lord Curzon.
📆 Day 7: 1 march
📍 Starting place: Sartoli (3,050m)
⛺️ Stopping place: After Kunwari Khal (3,760m)
📈 Total distance: 12km
🏔️ Max elevation: 3,815m
❄️ Difficulty: It was the hardest day, descending 570m and then ascending 1,350m down the canal, more and more snow and the storm getting worse. Up in Kunwari Khal the fog and wind did not let us see where we were going, we were advancing very slowly, there was about 1m of snow and we had to open the passage.
📆 Day 8: 2 march
📍 Starting place: After Kunwari Khal (3,760m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Karchi (2,278m)
📈 Total distance: 8km
🏔️ Max elevation: 3,760m
❄️ Difficulty: We start the descent but above the snow covers our waist and we have to open passage, we move very slowly and the path is not visible. When we reach the line of trees it improves visibility and little by little the snow decreases.
📆 Day 9: 3 march
📍 Starting place: Joshimath (1,036m)
⛺️ Stopping place: Lohajung
🚘 We take the car+bus and return to Lohajung, the starting point of the trek. Challenge achieved!
For those considering embarking on this adventure, it's important to note that the trail is not marked as it's an uncharted route. We highly recommend undertaking this journey with a professional and local guide to ensure safety and navigation. Our expedition took place in March, where we encountered significant snowfall, but it's advised to attempt the trek between December and February for optimal conditions. Prepare for challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, but rest assured, the breathtaking scenery and cultural immersion make it an unforgettable experience. Lord Curzon never walked this trail, though it is believed to have been improved when the region was expecting his visit.
