A classification or style of painting featuring cell structures to create unique design elements in modern art. Science and art together on a canvas. Practiced by artist David Siqueiros in the mid 1930’s it continues to remain a fascinating style of painting in abstract art. This video deals with cause and effect and the use of air as a painting tool.

What an eye-opener! I just happened upon one of your videos on cell-making and very much appreciate hearing a thorough and much more believable explanation of how to create cells in modern art. So the silicone bottle has left the art room and now I will try a new procedure in my quest to making paint cells. Please keep making videos. Just these two alone have made a difference in my thinking. Thank you so much.

Many of the other "activated cells" resemble shed snake skins. The art of pouring fascinated me but I couldn't get past the snake skin look until I saw the difference in your "cells." The clarity and definition can only be an example of the "real deal." I have found snake skins hiking and they are incredible. They are the discard and nothing as exciting and beautiful as seeing the snake itself. Now that I have seen this example, I must begin. Thank you.

I have been experimenting, watching what seems like a gazillion videos, and although I have been figuring out some of the techniques, I really feel I have just been blundering around. Well, I have just been blundering around and it is very frustrating. Now I know there is a scientific explanation, I can apply theory as well as ideas and look forward to figuring out how to get something that looks as good to me as your wonderful art does. You are too kind Sherrie 🙏 thank you so much. It is odd that so many people rely on alchemy to take the easy way out and not have a clue as to what is really transpiring. Australian Flotrol is a great thinner but that’s all. The right consistency of the top layer mix is what’s really important and of course nothing will work without the proper force applied to it. I really appreciate your comments🙏

      @@lisajohnson3476 ….present day?
There is no “chemical” magic here. It’s all about density/gravity of paint and controlled force to push heavy density paint down and out onto lighter density paint.
      STEP 1: Main Mix: Base Paint & Color Pouring Medium;
Mix: 3 parts Behr Marquee Interior Semi-Gloss Enamel, Deep Base, Untinted, 3453 (green can, HomeDepot)
1 part Minwax high gloss polycrylic
Add: to the above add 10% Golden tar gel
EXAMPLE: 15 oz (3 parts) Behr
5 oz (1 part) Minwax Polycrylic
      20 oz (4 parts) total
20 oz times 10% = 2 oz tar gel (which is almost ½ part [2.5 oz], but is actually 3/8 part)
***The consistency of this formula is ideal for my use of controlled air. If it is too thick for you I suggest adding small amounts of water to the polycrylic alone until it suits your particular style...this will probably take several trials...so test with small proportions.
Apply a fair sized puddle as the first layer or base paint, it is the identical formula as all the rest of the colors....spin to thin it down a bit and add more base paint around edges of paint that is already down, spin a bit, and smudge base paint out to edges of canvas.
STEP 2: Color Paint Mix; same consistency as Main Mix
Mix: 10% heavy pigment paint (Golden is best)
90% Main Mix (Base Paint & Color Pouring Medium)
Apply Color Paint Mix (second layer) in several ways, using squirt bottle, either very thin squiggly lines or in puddles made of thin squiggly lines that then look like they were poured, doing 1st color, then 2nd color, etc.
STEP 3: Top Layer Mix ; this will be THIN
Floetrol/Water Thinner: 5 parts regular Floetrol plus 8 parts water.
This will be used to thin the Tar Gel or the Liquitex Pouring Medium.
      Tar Gel Top Layer Mix:
10 parts Floetrol/Water plus 4 parts Golden Tar Gel. This makes the thinner for the paint.
Then mix: 8 parts Thinner Mix with 3 parts soft body paint.
      Liquitex Pouring Medium Mix:
4 parts Floetrol/Water plus 10 parts Liquitex Pouring Medium. This makes the thinner for the paint.
Then mix: 10 parts Thinner Mix with 7 parts soft body paint.
Apply Top Layer Mix using squirt bottle concentrating in center or apply as puddle made of thin squiggly lines that then look like they were poured.
STEP 4: Use controlled force on the paint (compressor, blow dryer) to force Top Layer Mix over color paint. This is the most critical part.
      STEP 5: Spin or tilt.

Mr Chase, First of all, thank you for your time and knowledge. I just finished watching both of your videos. Understanding the root of how cells are formed made me rethink many things in my way of painting. Your information was very clear and complete. I hope you continue making such informative videos.

Finally! I did not believe I would ever find a video that ACTUALLY gave a formula. I have watched hundreds of hours of videos and I have been doing this as a hobby for about 4 years. Now that I have retired I hope to actually create something that I don't mind showing. Thank you with sincerity. Mary L.

Steve -- have watched both of your videos -- thank you. I wish I had seen your videos before I started painting. So helpful. I have been trying to figure out this cell situation and nothing that I was seeing made sense to me. Finally --- someone makes sense. I hope you will keep these videos coming because they are certainly helpful, however, I do understand that you would rather be painting.
