Why is batching your art important? (And what IS batching, anyway?!)

  • As artists, we often fear that we don’t have a unique style or voice in our art. It’s a concern that is hard to define and style typically evolves over time. Many artists argue that they don’t want the restriction of being subject to one style or message. But who exactly said you have to have the same style? Picasso was successful during his lifetime and he certainly had multiple styles and forms of artistic expression. Despite the change in style, there are still shared qualities in all his work that make it distinctly his.
Let art historians and critics debate over those details. Just make your art. By the virtue of your decision to create it, there will be similarities because all of your art has one thing in common: YOU.
I wonder if the fear of not having a unique voice is an excuse to avoid trying to sell or promote our art? We all have a unique voice, but we have to make art regularly to have it consistently show in our work. And art can take a long time! This is why batching is your friend.

I have done four 100 day projects and three Inktobers. For most, I had a theme and/or medium. By the end of each, I had developed a nice body of work and clear style development. I agree with batching and will contemplate how I incorporate it more.

Sue that sounds great. Love how you've found strategies to show up and create art in series. I look forward to hearing how this may help! (I could see for a 100 day project batching a single size of paper for all 100 days - pre cut 100 sheets for example. It doesn't have to be complicated, just things that help us jump into the art faster or get more done during the time we have).

@@artiststrong for one of the 100 day projects, my limit was marker paper 4” x 5”, all precut, along with copic markers and permanent ink pens. I ended up focusing a lot on lilies. I almost always do this and two things I've noticed when it comes to sales are: with a series or batch you've spread your net wider and given a buyer a couple of options which might seal the deal. Ouch! I was new to this and naive, I'd love to do that kind of show now. I still have differs style but they are mostly in series. My watercolor is different from my oils just the way it is. when i saw "batching", first thing i thought of were the Florida Highwaymen : black orange pickers from Vero and Ft Pierce, who broke out of that treadmill and elevated their station in life by gathering up in a back yard to batch out panels, paintings and frames (made from house trim), then hit the road to sell them to motels, dentist offices and such, priced to move. Real grass roots, outside the box, "just do it" attitude, their art celebrated Florida scenes with vibrant, honest appeal, which is now highly collectible 😁

Great approach to get into the flow and a lot more likely that a style will emerge over several pieces. Reminds me of the story about the photography class where half were asked to take one picture and the other half could take 100 pictures. The one picture half all spent most of their time stressing about getting that one perfect shot, whereas the 100 picture half just got out and started taking pictures, refining their choices and ideas as they went along. Your batching idea is like the 100 picture half of the class; much more chance to grow as an artist.

I lay down the watercolour washes on four to six pieces, usually in a similar colour, then slowly do the very detailed ink overlays on those works. I never assigned a name like batching to the way I work as a painter, and it just occurred naturally because I was an illustrator and designer for most of my art career where I would illustrate stories with common theme narrative work for books or create greeting card art for major manufactures which always required a series of imagery. I did the same in the textile industry. I find that in painting as a fine artist that approach still works but I break it up from painting to painting. I don't want to bore myself and make it feel like a production line with constraints so I will create about eight paintings that are all different as a grouping and then repeat that process and this way I feel fresh and discover new things. It's all about discovery and things find a way of working together. I like mixing it up when it comes to painting. It may not work for every artist and we all definitely go through phases. I agree very much on what you said is that it's all you regardless and there will be common ground from work to work. Art has to be fun. It's serious as well, but you have to enjoy doing it.

@@breakfastclosed Great! I never like labels on creative people. I had to where many hats in my art career and worked within companies as a senior illustrator/designer for many years and worked freelance for major companies as well. It's a very broad portfolio of work with one connecting element of the art of design and finish. It's problem solving. you start working and things happen. In painting I was very much the realist painter for thirty years and then several years ago started doing abstract work. They both involve underpainting, but one involves a defined image and the abstract is very free and evolves as you paint. It's unpredictable and I like that. I like the results of both. My belief is good realist painters can be good abstract painters if they want to give it a go. It's all about shapes and composition and much of realist painting is actually abstract. I think what happens is some painters let the outside world dictate what is value in an artwork. It's safe to be a realist and I get that. People come to expect a certain thing from you and that can get to you in your work. You end up trying to live to someone else's expectations. I'm too old for that and have been there done that. I find equal value in both and defiant on that. I will always head to the contemporary wing of an art museum because there's an energy there and I also love the realist master paintings and impressionist works. How can we not love it all? It's powerful stuff and I get emotional about it and often shed tears. I feel that Art is somewhat under attack these days and a mass of many people don't appreciate it as they once did. We see art schools closing and no uproar from the public of asking why that is happening? The many cultures around the world always prided themselves on their art. In every major conflict in the wars that have happened the first thing that is stashed away in keeping is the art. It's important to what we are as humans.

Working on a few pieces at once helps save paint. You clean your brush by emptying it onto another surface. Because you arent focussed and fussing over just one painting the results can be more random and spontaneous. Boring jobs are best done in batches . Things like priming or wiring for example. I’ve watched a few videos recently, from both professional and hobby artists, to hopefully get ideas on how to make more time for art. My profession is environmental science. I feel like my brain is 60% analytical/logical and 40% creative/intuitive. For the most part, the two halves get along and form compromises, but other times the analytical/logical side overpowers a bit. Idk if you would describe this approach of yours as being logical, but that’s how I see it. Advice/methods offered in the few videos I’ve watched from other artists were too abstract and leaned heavily towards the creative/intuitive way of thinking, but your logical approach really resonates with me. For the #birbfest challenge in January 2024, I painted, drew and printed 31 - predetermined - birds, trying to use a different technique or medium for each one. After this batching process, I was able to say exactly which ones I would like to expand on and which ones I would rather not.
As a printmaker (Linocut), I did some rather involuntary batching last year, because I had created paper myself that only carried one layer of print due to its structure. This meant I had to simplify my otherwise quite complex approach to multi-layer prints. The results were absolutely stunning.
Furthermore, I have noticed that in the works of other artists, as different as they may be, and as little as the idea of batching may have been intentional, I usually quickly discover certain recurring elements, and I suspect that this is also the case with me.
After your video, whose reasoning makes immediate sense to me, I will probably take a more relaxed approach to such repetitions and no longer try so hard to be innovative and new with every single work. Thank you so much!

Good advice. I have thought about this before and I think I'm already applying it to a certain degree regardless of intention. However in general as I force myself to innovate and avoid repetition, I tend not to "batch" much, meaning that while I retain style and themes, I try to avoid something that feels too much like a series, and that adds pressure and block, when actually I should just let go, because when I enjoy a painting I do feel like repeating the process to some extent, to explore it again from a slightly different angle.
I can also see how this would strengthen style and technique.
I will keep this in mind and follow your advice.

Good advice. I do this because I just cannot stand to do colors & values in the same session. It’s almost like it uses different parts of my brain. I tend to paint an underpainting or in grayscale, then glaze color, then do final color & highlight layers.
I enjoy coloring less, but it’s def easier & requires less brain power & decision-making than the early thumbnailing/ sketching/ values underpainting phases

Instead of making one entire piece at a time (unless I was in a flowstate and that was ok), a lot of the time I wirewrapped elements or created extensions or measured and cut chain or posted pieces for sale, several at a time. I found it was easier on my brain because I was making less decisions.

@@artiststrong You don't. That's why I put "rule" in quotation marks. It's just simply not something I'd ever heard before, either as a rule, suggestion, or guideline, so it took me by surprise is all, and I wasn't sure whether or not it was something that was more commonly known, that had somehow never reached me. But I know we're all free as artists to do things how we please. Have a nice day!
