When I was in elementary school, Adventure Quest was the game for kids who were too cool for Club Penguin and too poor for the monthly World of Warcraft subscription. I have so much nostalgia for this game, I created my first character on a friends account in 2003 during a sleepover at a friends house. Soon after I created my own account, eventually becoming an X-guardian. I've been playing AQ and all the spin offs on and off ever since, playing Mechquest on release, playing AQW in Alpha&beta, and supporting the AQ3D kickstarter to get the game off the ground. So glad to see Artix Entertainment getting some love, even if its in 2020.

The difference between mobile games and something like AQ is that AQ wasn't created from the ground up with the explicit purpose of trying to get as much money from sucke- I mean players as possible.
Excuse you, the term 'players' is rather presumptuous and predefines our game experience. we prefer the term 'Whales' the most grand form of sea creatures.
TheTundraTerror ehhh not really. While there was a decent amount of stuff you could play for free there was a limit to what you could play along with weapons and skills to get until you had to have a purchased membership if I remember correctly.
@@judeskater93 You are wrong, and this will be rather long post but read on if you are interested. The difference between free and guardian in AQ (not AQworlds) was the extra exp from (xguardians), access to more story, classes could be leveled up over 5 up to 10 and maybe better spots to get exp/gold cap per day(not so much but guardians had things like the infamous labyrinth, what a snooze fest that was). Oh and the best thing guardians get, replacement for the default "free armor/weapon" replaced by guardian armor/weapon and awe weapon eventually. You had to work around and get 2x elements on 1 weapon as free player because free armor/weapon was useless and couldn't be replaced unless you had a temporary armor. Items at end game was the same. You still had access to all the "uber sets" (best in slot items) like Golden Plate and eventually Nemesis (I think it was called Uber the first time) or Reign Set. Followed up by multiple ones later on but still free. It only got pay 2 win later on (way later after aq worlds released) but the end game sets could still be purchased by free players (up until today but now you need ztokens to get "loot boxes"). The z-token items we're useless and only looked good. Anyone that played back then will suggest not buying weapons and saving only for houses (that would go up in price by huge numbers and resell for much more ztokens, still an option today but slower) The Guardian only weapons we're good only as replacement until you reach end game. For example lets take a weapon I remember, Poise was free lvl 90 water weapon then 110 guardian weapon(always had different water options) and followed up by free 120 poise weapon (bis for water). Classes we're fun but useless so ranking to 10 didn't do much but was fun for the story. Only Necromancer was insanely good but it worked fine for free players too. Beastmaster lvl 10 if I remember correct was a parody after Leroy Jenkins youtube video. So, AQ was not p2w for a long period of time but if you enjoyed the story and you wanted that extra power early on, guardian was a really good option. Even the priority queue that he talked about was bs. I was free player back then and had no problem. Day 1 of release I had to wait 20~ min to get in but back then AQ was close to Runescape in popularity. I played a lot of AdventureQuest ...
@@vlad- agree, though not P2W it still frustrated me that even though we have level 10 classes F2P players are stuck with being only able to use up to level 5 skills. This was such a disadvantage to the Ninja and the Vampire Hunter classes until Artix decided to rework all of the classes to be more balanced and not locking out elemental affinities of the skills. This was especially fun with the Berserker class. Another matter you forget is the amount of potions each account teir gets to retain after logging out. Free Players get the default 2 red and blue pots, Guardians get 5 while X-G gets 10. I remember "fondly" (read that as frustratingly) to go on a certain quest to fight a certain plant monster then use a certain low-level earth based spell and slice up said plant monster to farm upto 20 red potions. That said, when they updated to introduce player owned houses that the routine was buried as the higher leveled houses comes with free potion refills that reset at certain times of the day. Then there's the rudimentary PVP system they created for Clan Vs Clan battles which was fun until they abandoned the development of the Clan stroylines.
I'm in my late 20's, studying my bachelor's, working and yet I still find myself logging 9n at least once a month just for updates and what not. So many memories these passed 20 years 9f that game.
as a kid who spent more than "a lunchbreak" on this game , it held a dear spot in my heart. all though i didnt care too much about the story it was something about collecting weapon and armor sets to min max winning a fight. also id say the "pay to win" guardian membership was necessary to fund this and all the projects artix was running at the same time. that dragon that came with the guardian sword actually sucked ass when you got to the higher levels unless you got a 1% chance for "power word, die"
AQW was the first and only MMO I've played. It was the core of my life from 2009 to 2012. I really miss it :( AQ3D is aight but it's just not the same. If I'm playing an MMO nowadays I always think I might as well play FFXIV or ESO and get turned off by the amount of time MMOs ask for.
Fantom I still play AQW from time to time to see what goes on. 🤣 I miss the active players, it used to be lit. It started going down hill for me when they got rid of Cysero server.
I was never really all that into Adventure Quest, but Dragonfable was my go-to game for years. After a decade of playing, when the first major storyline finally ended, I decided to stop playing, having other responsibilities and not wanting to get tied up for another ten years in a constantly-updated storyline. Artix Entertainment created some of my most cherished memories, and I even played Adventure Quest Worlds for quite a while. Really, there's no other company that I can point to that so consistently shaped the entertainment that I digested growing up. Edit: Also, Gravelyn was my girl growing up.
I just feel you both, i kinda love the feeling of logging in once in a while to remember, yeah the main storyline of the fire war or the 08/9 mogloween really has a place in my heart.
I loved dragonfable too. However, I saw the updates becoming worse and worse. More instant travelling instead of exploration, more grinding to get items (like, defeat this boss 50 times) instead of random drops etc. Terrible terrible class balance etc.
@@FlashPlayerGames I played it when I first came out for a few weeks. It had a long monotonous grind like the old game except you had to walk to your enemies and locations. At least the old game you could move to the next location at the click of a button. I quit around level 10 after several days of gameplay. The grind to level 10 was insane compared to other games. Not to mention that besides grinding fighting creatures or doing monotonous quests the only other thing to do is walk around looking around. It is basically a action/adventure version of Gaia online. They are obviously taking advantage of the old nostalgia to make a phone game to try and make some more money. If I wanted to grind like that I would go back to WoW.

Innocent childhood days spent on Newgrounds and Kongregate with all the constant Adventure Quest ads on the site it was inevitable everyone was gonna try the game. A flash game offering a deeper experience than a 5 minute timewaster was incredibly rare back then, so it's no wonder AQ became so popular and became the home for many a poor flash gamer. We maybe be older today with money to spend on real videogames, but being a broke ass kid you'd play anything for free, a big bonus if it was actually good, plus flash games are just pure fun, hearkening back to the arcade games of old for simple experiences that just work with simple graphics instead of complex slow simulators or endless progression systems. I kind of miss the simplicity of gaming in those days, mobile and micro transactions have taken over and it's just sad what a lot of casual gaming has become.

Ah Adventure Quest... I played it back in the earliest days, when the strongest monster that nobody could beat was the Undead Giant, at level.... 15? 20? Back before there were even quests beyond the Undead Attack. Back BEFORE the moglin looked as good as he did. Back when the zards were the foes you saw the most often.
Dude, the Dragon egg was the hypest thing. I remember the exact night when they implemented the hatching update. To this day, its still one of the nost hype moments of my life.
Browser based flash games were awesome, let you get your game on in sketch places like school, friends house, family computer and crappy laptops. I miss everyone in class playing the same flash game and the teacher not knowing or caring what the heck was going on.

This was my favorite game as a kid! I went back to it about a year ago and... yeah, didn't age super well. But it was such a fun and nostalgic trip down memory lane! I'm looking forward to this video.
Hahaha i remember that whole... franchise? I played AQ and DragonFable a ton when I was a kid, but I know there was also a mech one and I think a superhero one?
I believe the mech one was called MechQuest. I also remember the superhero one but can't recall what it was called. I don't think it got our of beta. They also had Adventure Quest Worlds, which was an MMO version of Adventure Quest, where you could play with other players.
yeah, the superhero and mechquest are dead. I think you can still go and play them tho. DragonFable is alive. I pretty much reccommend playing it if you are willing to pay for the dragon amulet. the cutscenes are pretty good and fun and it's nice that there's a veriety of content and generes (sometimes serious, sometiems jokes) there's in fact a new arch where people could pick up the story if they don't want the hustle of all the misions.... but one would pass the jokes like the HOLY WASABI!
The Superhero one you’re thinking is called Hero Smash. All though it’s still around, it’s basically dead, and no longer gets any updates to my knowledge.
Dragonfable has and still does get a lot of great quality of life updates. Still updates every friday even. Every old class was redone a while ago with updated art and new abilities to match more current classes. New storylines have gotten darker and deeper. The art has improved immensely. I love the game more now a days than I did back as a kid.

The website would full on crash often from too many visitors.

Billiam: "AdventureQuest was weird" Dude, you don't have to tell me, I still play it and it has only gotten weirder. They're actually trying to make it a 2D Dark Souls, you can't roleplay after level 50 anymore because everything is so strong that unless you're wearing a hodge-podge of armor, shield, and weapon that are all from different sets and look terrible together you'll get 1-shotted. They don't even have the decency of Dragonfable, because at least DF gives you the option to make an outfit and have it cover up your class and equipped items with other items so you can get the look you want with the stats you need.
Yeah. Min-maxing gets pretty important later on in the game. Gotta make sure you're putting points into the right stats for your build, make sure you have good armours for every element (hello, compression) with either an FO or FD lean based on if you're an offensive or defensive build etc. etc. Lots of fun still, though.
@@ediblemandibles I play a Battlemage Tank build purely because it gives me more RP opportunities. Max END, Max INT, and the rest in LUK. It's still hard to enjoy any of the "even fights" against stuff at my difficulty level. I only get by because I'm kitted out with Z-Token gear sets like DoomKnight and spells that fuck with defenses and elemental modifiers. It's still fun, sure, just nowhere near as fun as it used to be.
I remember those days when all the boys from my grade every recess ran to the library computers and fight for a computer seat just to get to play the game
10:07 that last option in that menu is "Flee". that means you can run away from the fight so you don't have to just sit there turn after turn just to die. you can run away and reset with that option.

This inspired me to go back to my old AdventureQuest, after multiple days of guessing the email for it I finally realized it was my mom's email that she stopped using 12 years ago. After getting into the account I saw "Last played 2520 days ago" (about 6.9 years), and even then I remember doing that only to check up on the game "after all these years" so it's been at least a decade since I made my account. Been playing it nonstop the last dayor two and having a blast just like I did 13 or 14 years ago, already got my level 48 guardian to level 53. One thing I also did was change my character's face from the boy face to the man face, it's symbolic of me returning as a fully grown man lol.
bruh lemme tell you there was no bigger buzzkill then going to the library in 2005 with your measley 30 minutes of computer time and having to wait in a long ass queue to log in
Selkies are creatures from Irish mythology! They’re like Irish mythological mermaids kinda. They’re women that can transform into seals, but when they come onto land men capture them and take their seal skin from them so they stay as beautiful women. The selkies are forced to stay on land and marry the man because he keeps her seal skin locked up, but if she manages to get her seal skin back she’ll put it on and transform back into a seal and return to the ocean

How is Dragonfable in 2020??
I love dragonfable still.
Dragonfable still continue every week also the story is slowly interesting is fun
@@justin_38 Very different from how it was originally, but still very good.
I have AQ3d on my phone, I should really play it more.
Man, there's a lot of videos you can make from Artix Entertainment alone.
So glad to see someone bring this back into my headspace.
It's like everyone played them, but nobody wanted to admit it. Flash games dat guilty pleasure.
Anyone that played back then will suggest not buying weapons and saving only for houses (that would go up in price by huge numbers and resell for much more ztokens, still an option today but slower)
The Guardian only weapons we're good only as replacement until you reach end game.
Thinking back, 25$ once for everything for the rest of your life on all created characters is great.
I remember when AQWorlds still had 90-60k active players 9 years ago, now theyre 6-3k active
i miss aqworlds
it's getting a "remaster" and will be called AQ2D
AQW was the first and only MMO I've played. It was the core of my life from 2009 to 2012. I really miss it :(
AQ3D is aight but it's just not the same. If I'm playing an MMO nowadays I always think I might as well play FFXIV or ESO and get turned off by the amount of time MMOs ask for.
@@Ryio5 try swtor, you don't have to grind for levels and the storyline is good.

@@FlashPlayerGames
I played it when I first came out for a few weeks.

For the superhero one you might be thinking of Epicquest
yeah, the superhero and mechquest are dead.
Billiam: "AdventureQuest was weird"
Dude, you don't have to tell me, I still play it and it has only gotten weirder.
Max END, Max INT, and the rest in LUK.

second was, i think, a Crab-Monster.
Hope i get help!
The future-proofing “I miss retail stores” probably wasn’t supposed to hit this quickly lol
I have a level 78 or so in adventure quest, I remember most things about the game and it’s lore. It’s were draclpires came from- and wearpires ((the first in a quarter dragon quarter werewolf quarter vampire)) pretty insane. I love this game because it’s so close to me I made my first account in 2006 and I still remember the login. Adventure quest worlds is actually a very good MMO please try it out.
