    I always feel so weird when people are complaining about Goodreads, feels like I'm the only person alive who actually have no problem with the way the website looks and usually actually find the books I'm looking for quite easily 😂 (totally get the Amazon complaints though)

      In their database authors don't even have a proper ID! And it definetely makes things complicated when two authors have the same name...

    • @TKDDLJ09
      @TKDDLJ09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That might be. But from a users 0erspective its very easy to navigate and that should be the main thing. 🤷‍♀️ like it aint the prittiest website in the world, but its pretty easy to figure out. Their app could be a lot better, but their desktop version is easy to use.

    That was such an interesting video! To add to your reflexion on Goodreads, when your native language isn't English you end up being so much more aware of the new books coming up in the US or the UK rather than the new releases from your own country, which can be weird / reinforces a form of soft power.

    • @strawb2811
      @strawb2811 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yes that is a problem. It would be cool to have different language / country pages for any goodreads-type site. Users could set language preferences so their recommendations are in all the languages they want to read in. Also being able to filter reviews by language would be useful. For example, I'd be interested in French literature as it's a language I've studied for a long time eventhough my native language is English.

    • @pinjah1471

    • @guitarsauce5978
      @guitarsauce5978 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sometimes was able to solve this issue by trying to find a similar site in the native language I'm reading in. For instance, for Japanese novels, Bookmeter is a great site with companion app.

      Its an american website? What did you expect?.. 🤣 Amazon doesnt have a website for my country either, they dont have for any Scandinavian country. But im not telling them to fix that. I just accept that ny country isnt big enough and that its an American company. Like goodreads. 🤷‍♀️ i dont expect goodreads, an American website to have books in my language, but somehow they always do anyway. 🤷‍♀️

    Storygraph looks amazing and I can't wait to join when it launches. I've already found their insta so I can keeps tabs. However, at the beginning of the video when you were listing the things you didn't like about goodreads (binging and quantity vs quality of reading) I found that I actually experience that more with booktube than I do with goodreads. For me, my goodreads goal is a very personal thing but then I hop onto booktube and I see people displaying a massive stack of books thats supposed to be their TBR for the next month? Or the books that they read last month or sometimes even the books that they read in one day?! Its very easy to compare and feel as though I'm not reading enough and feel the pressure to catch up at the expense of deep reading or truly reading for leisure and growth.

    • @Lucadonta
      @Lucadonta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Yes this! Completely agree. I always set quite a low reading target, as I don't want a random number to influence my reading choice - if it's high, I'd find myself leaning towards shorter fast paced books and while they can be great, I don't just want to read them, some of my favorite books have been long and slow.

    Side note: Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq (pronounced Tag-ack) is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Possibly my favourite book of 2018. I live in Germany and most public libraries work with the service Onleihe (website and app) which works just like Libby I expect. I have always used it for audiobooks and it is absolutely amazing. The catalogue changes depending on your local library. I am signed up with my local library and one in the closest bigger city and always have enough to listen to. Of course not all the books are there but then you can treat yourself. Whats your local library fee against the monthly price of audible that is robbing you from money that you could invest in small book suppliers and independent artists....

    As a former Amazon employee I try my best to stay away from things that Amazon owns. Like I never buy books from Amazon, and other things if possible. But as someone who likes reads a lot and for the longest time didn’t own a lot of books, it was hard for me to keep track of books I had read, so I joined goodreads last year. hey, person who self published through Amazon here. One reason why I didn't put my ebook on other platforms was that Kindle basically still has the monopoly on ebooks. Which meant putting it on KOBO or others just didn't seem worth the time cost. However if consumers move away from Amazon, authors like me and publishers are more likely to see the effort of branching out more worthwhile.
      I think in the case of an individual author it might be worth it to even send them an email telling them you want their book, just not via Amazon. It will help them understand their readers preferences a bit more.
      Tldr: Don't feel guilty for trying to buy from ethical places. You're awesome for doing so and good people/ authors will understand!

    Really enjoyed this, Amazon = such a massive conversation starter right now! Have so many mixed feelings. In honesty, I've relied heavily on Amazon this year...for audible which I'd be lost without, to sell books to followers in countries who can't afford the shipping fees from Irish shops, to order baby and pregnancy things during lockdown when I couldn't find other places delivering - mostly from small businesses who are thriving because they have Amazon as a platform to sell through - and I feel like I've come to terms with the fact that they own... EVERYTHING lol. I'd personally feel like a hypocrite to avoid using - or mentioning, to my audience - Amazon, as my whole career and my own small business has been built from TH-cam, who in my mind are in the same camp as Amazon! TH-cam take such a huge percentage of our Adsense/are impossible to contact and they randomly delete and demonetise videos we've worked on for days with no good explanation, they're most certainly a monopoly, could go on for days! I just try really hard to strike a balance between supporting small and big businesses and think I'm happy enough with that for the time being

    I've been moving off goodreads for a while - I never used the «social media» aspect of it, it's always been for categorizing/sorting my books. I also dislike the gamifying thing and the ratings. I've built a spreadsheet to help with tracking and everything instead. I still use goodreads to check what people thought of books I might pick up. If I were to migrate to another platform I feel like I would either need a deep purge of my to read list which is far too long, or a completely fresh start. A new place to discover books would be good though, thank you for informing me!

    One thing that is rarely mentioned is that if you don't live in US or Europe there are hundreds of thousands of books that is literally impossible to get anywhere else. Amazon effectively has replaced the postal service in hundreds of countries where the state postal service is effing shit (and I mean shit level absolutely unrelieable even in the higher costs).
    I've never had a Good Reads account but Storygraph sounds actually pretty cool. One thing I really would like would be to see a wider array of non-english written books on those websites. Sometimes I feel like the reading world in spanish is absolutely different, like we have our canon, our struggles, our representation and then I meet anglospeaking people who have read García Marquez and think that is basically it...
    So this sounds pretty cool

      With webtoon you for example have different sides of the same site, i think they should do that too with these booksites, since a lot of books are translated into other languages, so i think it would be amazing if we could add extra languages to our accounts of what we want to see (with reviews and book recs on our 'feed') then i think we could really enjoy these sites even more.

    And I really mean this, I don’t even agree 100% with the goodreads thing (most of those problems don’t actually happen to me), but I absolutely love the courage and dedication to think about it and put it online. Definitely is something I’ll be thinking about for weeks.

    One really cool thing I just noticed about the StoryGraph is that it asks you what language you can read in, apart from English, which is brilliant. As a bilingual person, I always mean to read more in German as well as English, but Amazon and Goodreads only ever recommend me English books, which means it's really hard to find good German books. Reading books from other countries and other languages is something I feel really strongly about (and a really good way to read more diverse books), so that's a great sign!

    LEENA!!! oh god, i love how you talk about things so well!!! and one thing that i thought was really interesting was how you view reading - i, as a teacher of portuguese/english, am really concerned about this. i have to make students read, cause that is part of life, but also have to accept the right to students not to like doing it (and making it more enjoyable during classes). and i just LOVE the book you've mentioned, about the rights of the reader - we studied during my graduation and it opened a discussion of what was the rights we would create during our classes. i mean, i like how you talk about this whole process of buying books, borrowing books, having books and reading in general. it is a really complex thing thinking in the school environment and i really like that there are apps that can make it more interesting for students, make them want to partake in this process. ANYWAY, thank you so much for the video - i love how you put things into words and make it all didactic!!!! lots of love and take care
