I'm addicted to this channel. Try Kevin's bagels. But the harmony they show us is what I use to attempt to get projects done without drama with my husband. We're married 47 years. My guy can measure 3 times and get 3 different numbers. We inherited all the tools but he is clueless how to use them. I, however, grew up in my Dad's workshop and know what to do, but explaining it to him just brings drama. I'm so frustrated BUT if he watches Kevin and Sarah he gets more mellow and we can get thru a project with less drama. Free therapy for us. I love it.

You are my wife’s and my favorite people to watch, in 2006 I was involved with a workplace robbery and was injured with a head injury, we lived in Milwaukie Oregon in town, having a small 8x12 greenhouse, small garden area and blueberries, strawberries, triple crown blackberries, raspberries, Fuji & yellow delicious apples and cherries , God, my wife Terri and gardening is what has got me through this, as I have memory issues, Headaches, and 3 or 4 seizures a month, but I am blessed to have at least 2 hours every day to garden, last year we purchased 2.75 acres next to my Son and his family hear in Ringgold Georgia, and just moved into our home we had built two months ago, major change from Oregon, Thank you for sharing your life with farming and raising plants, you help make my days happy ones, God bless you and your family, ( Did I say that I don’t like snakes and high humidity 😃😃😃) keep on homesteading!

“Starting a garden is hope for the future”
When I saw “tunnel” in the title, my mind went back a few years when you had an arched tunnel growing birdhouse gourds. That was so cool, how the gourds would hang down and grow inside the tunnel. If I had the space, I’d like to try tunnels for climbing veggies like cucumber, zucchini, even tomatoes..like having a walk-thru garden..

Thank you for the greenhouse help! We put up just a 10x20 Dakota from Grower’s Solutions in the fall last year and planted raised beds we added, plus we moved pepper & basil plants into it. I’ve had so much trepidation on how to manage it in our (sometimes extreme) Oklahoma heat. Now I have a starting point to plan from because you did the research and shared. I should add that my dear husband has worked this greenhouse this winter-even keeping most of the plants alive when the temps hit “0” and I had the flu! You guys are so appreciated ❤

Guess what I'm getting? One of those heaters for my green house!! Raised beds drain so fast and you can put low tunnels over them. Build high tunnels with cattle panels and cover them with the shade cloth. Don't need any plastic after the spring rains are done. With starting some tomatoes and peppers now for the green house they'll be ready for harvesting before the ones out in the garden. That way it's easier with canning - half at a time. Plus you can start a third round for the green house for fall time. Watching you 2 today has me so jazzed!!! God willing I'll have pepper seeds started within 2 weeks and then tomatoes 3 weeks later. And so on and so on. I'm so ready for spring and summer. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

This will be our first year using a high tunnel, and I just wanted to say I'm super grateful for Kevin's tip. Will definitely be taking that home to my husband, so he has a good idea of when we need to get that installed in our lower garden. Annnddd... We have planned to get a shade cloth, so it was great to hear Sarah talk about that, because we suffered last year with that intense sun on our plants that were in the open. Thankfully I have a huge old maple that shades the most of my upper garden bed and those plants actually thrived through that bad heat we had. I'm so excited for this year's growing season, just can't wait to get going on it!!

Last summer you had issues with the black fabric on the garden getting too hot or dry. I discovered using two layers of cardboard under the fabric keeps the ground temperature more stable and stops the weeds from coming up in unused holes. After a few waterings I can use the hand drill hole maker to cut through the cardboard then plant. The worms love it. We leave the cardboard behind in the fall as mulch. Be sure to remove all tape and staples. We pick up a bale of cardboard from our local furniture store.

I’m doing a sprout house as well and going to use Solar to make my electricity. Along with sprout house and doing solar for my chicken coop as well. 200 watt arrays respectively. We are closing in on 5 feet of snow here in Utah and it’s brutal but my hens (21) are still laying avg of 18 to 20 a day which I sell for $5 a dozen to help pay for feed and labor. My little girl is paying tithing on the money we make on eggs and we are blessed too. I sure hope my bees make it as they did an excellent job on my garden as we canned close to 400 quarts. I learn so much from you two beautiful people and plan on using grow pods instead of silo cups. I have a Texas seed bank that I catalog my seeds but I love your grow pods/seed pods. I’ll have heat lamps and grow lights which will tap into my solar array. We’ve needed a lot of moisture for our garden so the snow will be a big help. I’ve already planted 120 garlic last fall that are covered to be harvested in summer so am happy for that raised bed. Once again great content and I only wish I had a high tunnel geothermal greenhouse but maybe in the near future. You two are great servant messengers and bless you always.

Thing about using plug tray is that you start your seeds in a much smaller area. I use plug trays and put one seed in each plug.
When people plant in pots, they often put in two or three seeds to insure they'll have one plant grow in every pot. Then they decide which one to keep once they are growing.

for extra growing space in the high tunnel would be to have the chains as in the sprout house holding tall rain gutters put on an angel as high side on one end and slightly lower on the other end. this would put a drip line at top and slowly go to the other end with water. can put lettuce, radish, light or plants with less roots,,, no slugs, less bugs to reach them.. this will free up some of the tubs. can place them to the side of the curve and above tubs below to not interfer the plants below or hit head on.

Our summers are relatively cool and the season is quite short, so we put all of the heat loving plants in the greenhouse and it turned out wonderfully last year. Will be doing so again this year.

Wow your video makes me want to be in my garden so bad! And we’re suppose to get up to 4” snow again today in south central IA! Ugh !
I was going to mention my nephew a few years ago started smoking his veggies for his salsa! Omg delish! You just pile all your veggies on the grill outside on holie cookie sheets that you get in the law. And garden Wal Mart. A couple dollars each. And roast your veggies on low fire a few hours till there smoked! The flavor to your salsa is so awesome! Then make it into your salsa recipe and can it! Wow. Thought I’d throw it out there Incase anyone is interested in this. Amazing flavor smoked salsa at its best ! Yum O

If you run poles and wires over your outdoor garden, you can have saran shade cloth that you can slide or roll back and forth from up above to shade outdoor garden plants [when solar intensity is a problem]. Cheaper than high tunnels and greenhouses. Where do the big black 5 gallon plastic bins come from? You can soak seeds the night before to leach away starch and sugar that would attract damping-off fungi, in case there are any unseen holes in the seeds. Especially for beets. Humidity domes can be made from quarter-inch or half-inch hardware cloth screen material and covered with saran wrap (spray water at overlap edges to hold it tight).

I saw a video last year somewhere in Europe, where they put solar panels over the crops. They were spread out so as not to block all of the sun. So, they reduced the intensity of the sun on the crops & generated electricity. Obviously, this is much more expensive to set up than shade cloth. But over time, it will pay for itself in electricity.

Somewhere in Africa they have turned desert into food crop land by growing under the solar panel fields. Its amazing results for the hungry parts of the world.

Let the FUN begin! Kevin and Sarah- I learned something that I think is valuable, this year, on starting peppers. I am growing some OLD varieties, and first off, I can see why the farmers may have gravitated to the new varieties. Those shells are hard as a rock! Even when they did germinate, the shells came up with them, and after a few days, I had to pick some of the shells off. That is when the AH-HA hit me. HARD as a ROCK. Now, I see why they soaked the seeds, for a day or so before planting. If you are planting a field, that would time consuming! But, on a garden scale- I think worth giving it a shot. Give it a test and see if you have better, and quicker germination on a couple of your peppers, and let us know how it works, if you do.. ☺☺

Soaking the seeds hastens germination too.
Where I live, if I plant a bean that isn't about to sprout (or already sprouting), they are damaged by nematodes and never grow into a plant. But I can have them coming up in a day or two, by soaking and then keeping them in very moist towels until they are safe to put into the ground.

I'm with Sarah. I love to grow tomatoes for sauces but hate them fresh. This time of the year is so exciting and frustrating. Spring is close but still cold. We struggle now with wet springs too. I have a raised bed garden. I usually cover beds with plastic to keep them dry. Our row garden was nearly 3 weeks late last year. 🙏 🌻

Much less evaporation, and nutrient dense soil is really my goals for this year as well. I also will try to shade my raised beds.

I had a shade cloth over my high tunnel greenhouse. I proved to myself the shade cloth works and also my plants inside did so well I am building a second high tunnel cattle panel greenhouse. Yes I love the greenhouse. The heat and dry period we was freak weather, also the frigged cold spells we got early on in October/November was also freak that seldom ever happens this far south. I live about 200+ miles south of you. I was sick that I lost all of my greens, beets Chard etc. I love the California Belle pepper they do very well here. I have found some peppers that I am going to buy and plant. I am going to try my art at fermenting some peppers this year and try to make my own Louisiana Hot Sause that me and my husband love. Good luck with your gardening.

You guys have got me so ready to plant seeds! I'm in zone 5b/6a depending on where you look for the info..lol. but, I have a medium size greenhouse in my basement. I'm in central Illinois. So we aren't that far off from each other as far as starting seeds. I paused this video and got out my garden journal at took notes. You do such a great job at explaining everything. I feel like I was in a nice, easy gardening class with friends! I hope to start seeds this weekend. So excited. Love your videos! God Bless.

Since seeds require dark to germinate (seed pop) and light to sprout after germination, you could leave your grow lights off for a few days or until you see the first sign they have begun to germinate.

I understand the little feeling of sadness leaving a place filled with memories but life is changeable and we develop all the time. What suited us 10 or 20 yrs ago doesn´t always suite us later.
I´m gonna start up my chili next week, after that I will sow my tomatoes. They say that El Niño gonna give us a very hot summer this (and maybe even next) year so I´m gonna try to grow 1 plant of every tomato variety outside, also try to grow corn against a southern faced wall. Really looking forward to this growing season and building a new and bigger green house!

Just a suggestion. Instead of growing less in outside garden grow animal feed that will last over winter. Pumpkin and other squash sunflower that have long storage life can cut your feed costs and give you back up in case something happens that cuts off the feed store.
