New to the channel. Very impressed with the simple and clear instructions. I have downloaded the PDF file and have been preparing my greenhouse for next year (2025). I started growing my plants in my garage and now I feel like having a unique spot for just growing my tomatoes and peppers. I will follow along! Thank you!

Thank you so much for all of the great information on seed starting, planting, trellising, pruning, and harvesting tomatoes. Even though I have had gardens for many years, I really struggle here in the deep South in Georgia, where even in Spring the temperatures can soar over 90 degrees and we have extremely high humidity which means we are always dealing with fungus, pests, and disease issues when it comes to growing tomatoes. I think a few of your tips will really help me be more successful in avoiding some of the pest and disease issues I have had with tomatoes. I really appreciate the free guide also, thank you.

So impressed. by the work that goes into this. 10k lbs sounds like a huge number when you read the video titla but when you consider that they are attempting to market there production it amazes me how tight their margins would be. Farming as a business has to be a strong passion to get through all the peaks and valleys of just one season. We should remind ourselves of all this when we go to the farm market and look at the price of organic heirloom tomatoes. Hearing people complain about $3.99 lb prices at the stand makes me wonder if people understand what goes into making those fresh organic vegetables available.

The only thing you didn't cover was doing a soil test and talking abouth the correct Ph for growing tomatoes in. I'm a beginner to gardening and this was something I had hoped to learn. No one is interested in hydroponics! Except for people that don’t understand what goes into real healthy organic food hydroponics has no flavor and is lacking all the biodiversity in microbe activity that organic soil does 😅
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should 🤢

    • @samuellim8756

@@jeffreythiel5315 not everyone has access to organic soil you know that right? Especially people living in small islands where arable land is few. Some of us actually have to grow crops in alternative ways such as hydroponics. So weird never thought i’d come across a organic food loyalist. I hope you don’t get nightmares about hydroponics 😂

Great video - thanks. Question from a short farmer: how do you prune and pick when the tomato plants are over 6' tall? (We were sad when you closed the Rutland farm.)

A step ladder is the best solution we’ve found!

Noticed your comment about being vertically challenged. I learned a little bit differently about growing in a high tunnel. You will need to adapt your high tunnel for your height. I have a few videos from this season 2023 where we adapted a less than perfect tunnel for tomatoes. This system here will eventually terminate the plants before they are done producing. We like to lower the plants and cover the bare stems with soil/compost to allow them to keep growing. Lastly, if you're young and fit, go ahead and use a ladder but I find it slows management down tremendously, let alone the fall factor. Keep learning and adapting info to develop your own style. Cheers!

hello. Very useful information.I want to ask you a few questions. 1) When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, what is the temperature and humidity? 2) when growing tomatoes in coconut briquettes, the frequency and rate of watering with water.3) the norm of illumination for tomatoes) . I'll give you a blog in advance. Thanks

The temperature fluctuates. We cover this in the video. We have not used coconut brick before

I worked at a store that sold heirloom tomatoes and momotaro’s. 4.99-699 a pound. That’s huge money when some heirlooms are over a pound.

Hi Lulu! glad you liked the video. Sometimes we use a liquid fertilizer (though not always) that is sourced from Nitron Industries in fayetteville, arkansas called tomato booster.

Great video! Thank-you very much for doing this. What method do you use to calculate wholesale/retail costs to the consumer? And, what percentage of profit margin do you add into the pricing? Thanks again.

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank, Ed! Great question. Our general rule of thumb is that your retail price will usually be twice that of your wholesale price. wholesale price depends on local markets and your operation's diversity of product. for example, profit margin on cucumbers is very low because this tends to be a crop that is readily available locally. However, we might decide to grow cucumbers anyway because it increases the diversity of products we are able to offer to customers in one location. Because it is not possible to predict a growing season perfectly, your profit margin will change from season to season, but diversifying your operation gives you a leg-up. Hope this helps!

Nicely done in-depth video, I have been gardening for almost 40 years (practical, feed the family type) and have pruned and trellised my closely spaced, indeterminate tomatoes for many years. The seedling pruning is something I had not known or done, will be on my to do list next year. Thanks!

Last year, I did a side by side test with 4 Early Girl plants grown with double stems and 4 with single stems. My results were non-conclusive. Slightly more weight on the doubles maybe, but more small tomatoes at the two tops. I'm going to try another trial next year, doing the same thing with some MoneyMaker plants which are doing super well so far this year.

You could double your tomatos by using a hook! We do that in germany. You can slide the plants while they are growing more of ghe length of the greenhouse.

    • @HeiferUSA

Hi Richard, we just amend the soil at the start of the season. If we need to add any organic fertilizer we use a proprietary blend from a local supplier that we inject through the irrigation system, but we usually don't have to if the soil is healthy enough.
