Greetings from Nottingham England. As someone else said some people just love to hate!! Your videos are great stuff Charlie... I think anyone with half a brain can see how many years of slogging at it are behind them and that you have really thought through how best to get your take on these concepts across. They're really helping me with some problems I'm trying to iron out in my technique. Mainly accuracy especially as I become a stronger trumpeter, I'm trying to push my tempo up to bop type speeds. So these videos are helping me really reassess my fundamentals. After all everything else is built upon them. One thing I'm finding with the scissor handle 4 step setup (which is amazing in terms of understanding what's really going on and the use of face muscles to play higher is something nobody has ever said to me but was a eureka moment.) is that I sometimes use a little too much pressure. I've never had a problem with pressure as I'm a singer so I already had a good idea about air support when I picked up the horn. Any advice on using your 4 step setup process whilst making sure not to use excessive pressure would be very welcome. Anyway I trust your advice simply from hearing and seeing your beautiful playing m'man. 😉 I should really chase you for a Skype lesson sometime as you're totally my fave TH-cam teacher! Charlie, I've been a trumpet teacher and professional player for for almost 30 years and have studied and played with some of the best in the business in the US and abroad and what you teach is spot on. I recommend your videos to others for good teaching videos. I like your humble approach to teaching and your methods are correct unlike some ego maniacs on you tube, posting videos just to show off some screech notes and not to actually teach quality of sound first before screech notes (and I'm a lead player lol). You're a top rate trumpet teacher and anyone who puts thumbs down on this video has NO idea what they're talking about in regards to the mechanics of the trumpet. I'd love to actually hear THEM play and teach. Keep doing what you're doing, you have educated more trumpeters than you know, young and old! Great work and blessing to you!
This was a great lesson for me. I never could buzz well without the trumpet. Even doing the mouthpiece alone was not consistent. You expressed this in a way I could really relate with. I am working on the lining up of my lips. I was guilty of the over/under slip of the lips. Please keep you videos coming I am disabled and can't get out easily but I am a student of music and the trumpet.

Thank you! For 3 years in high school I held the first trumpet seat in Marching/Concert Band, and Jazz Band. The only issue was, I could only hit high notes momentarily by pressing mouthpiece hard against my my mouth and blowing aggressively. This video just taught me what two band directors and 6 years of playing did not. Trying to use this technique I realize I will have establish a new embouchure and develop it, because my old embouchure was heavily dependent on mouthpiece pressure against my lips.
Thanks for the great videos, Charlie. At 53, I'm picking up my horn again after many years, and your tips and thoughtful approach to teaching are helping tremendously...especially the embouchure lessons. My problem had always been too much pressure on my lips and my range always suffered. After a month of playing 30 minutes a day and watching your videos, my chops are starting to feel better and I feel my range is progressing (for me that's a D or occasional E above the staff, which even in my playing days was a stretch). It's a slow process, but I'm feeling motivated to see how far I can get. Keep teaching us!!

This is the best explanation of buzzing I have seen and the first time i have ever really felt its benefit. The buzzing book gave me some of the feeling of this stuff, but this video gave me a more clear idea of the mechanics

I've been immersing in your videos and now I'm going to take everything right back to the beginning and make the investment to get these basics right. Regarding the camera, you can set a 'focus point' on your face which will tell the camera to auto focus around that area. You could also choose to go manual on this occasion as you are staying in the same position
@Richard Brotzman Agreeing with both Matt & Richard. If you have more light it will allow you to have more range of motion without changing focus. (Depth of field. Note: I learned on film, and Matt knows more about modern cameras than me.) I would try manual mode with more light -- especially in front of you and only lighting you. Light yourself like the soloist you are. Then be a star and stay in the spotlight. Since the image quality is so good, perhaps you could use a higher ISO; the trade off would be a bit of graininess.
This has helped a lot. Really feel like I had a breakthrough by drawing the lips back rather than closing them together to go higher. My mouthpiece buzzing immediately sounded better, more in tune and less spluttery... if that’s a word!!! Many thanks

Embarking on my journey to play trumpet again thanks to you Charlie. Embouchure has always been my problem and I have never had a teacher who has addressed it properly. Now I will learn and achieve that tone and ease of joyous playing.
Glad to meet another buzzer! I got some of these tips from Stamp and Thompson book, but not all. I also use a piano to find the notes. Not many good trumpet players, and I am not including myself, advocate whisper tones and buzzing today.

With four years of lessons with Jimmy Stamp in the early 70’s, I never began with lip buzzing. Always started as you demonstrated with the mouthpiece and piano. It’s a challenge lips alone. But it makes sense as I’m returning to the trumpet after decades away.
This is great. I started trumpet 50 years ago, and this is what I was missing. I put the trumpet down when my mentor died, a long time ago. I picked up the horn a few years ago, and hoped I wouldn't have the same problems, but I did. So I played a few years, and put it down again. There's more to music than just lips, but I'm going to be trying this. Thanks. Also, when I picked up the horn again, I was trying the Mysterytomastery program. I had high hopes. .

Debbie, that's cool! I didn't help that one of my best friends ended up Maynard Ferguson's lead player. He used to buzz his mouthpiece all the time. Even when we went to court after being caught racing our cars after band practice. Now I know what he was doing.
G, I'm kinda relearning a new embouchure, since I had braces as an adult. Didn't have them when I was younger and playing the trumpet. I find I have a whole new set of challenges...just not the same mouth! I find I have too much movement in the red in my embouchure as I change ranges. Mr. Porter makes this look so easy!

thanks Charlie-- every athletic endeavor relies on maintaining "form" and brass embouchure is no different. We are creating the reed that a sax player simply installs in a mouthpiece --out of lip tissue!!--- not always easy and often requires your approach with buzzing and mpc then playing with singing sound. Some lucky people seem to just "get it" but I sure have been helped by your explanations and have performed some very difficult music on trumpet. I will add these lip buzz ideas to my regular practice. thanks!

Just played a couple of your videos in the background while cooking dinner and buzzing along a bit, great tips already! Everybody mentions curling in the lips but you mentioning they should only move closer to the teeth and not actually curl immediately worked for me :) I'll definitely sit down and go through your content over the next couple of weeks, personal progress is always the best inspiration to me!
There are a few rules that NEED to be followed when doing any lip (free form) buzzing. 1. The chops must be saturated w saliva (even if you normally play dry) 2. Never lip buzz on a fatigued (tired) embouchure 3. The airflow must ALWAYS be downward 4. NEVER tongue attack a lip buzz, ALWAYS use a whooooo no tongue air attack 5. Never lip buzz below a 2nd line G in the staff 6. Never just use lip buzzing as a warm-up Lip buzzing is generally used to firm up a flabby chin area and helps with increasing embouchure vibrating fluency overall. Charlie, I "briefly" met you w Wayne Daniels at Sunfest '92 at the Arturo Sandoval show. Then saw you again w Wynton in '94 when you guys were trading solos. I never got a chance to play w you though as I was just getting my chops together when you left West Palm around '95-ish

This and your other video about embouchure are brilliant! At the start of this video I couldn’t even lip buzz, never mind produce a note. By the end, I could play the first five notes of the Bb major scale up and down just with my lips buzzing!!! I will be doing these exercises every day. Thank you!
I can not buzzing without the mouthpiece. What I need to do? Because everything you said is very true, but it is really hard for me to do it without the mouthpiece.
HI Charlie thanks a bunch, this is answered a lot of questions for me to why I am not getting good sound. Now in relation to you asking for advice with the auto focus this is going to sound BONKERS, but the camera was picking up on a lot of OTHER (ghost busters) activity in your room. Lets for giggles say this is true and you are a believer - go to 1:00 and watch just after you pick up the mouth piece you will see what I call a floater rise from the bottom of the screen and float of towards your right, (I know its just dust, NOT) fast forward and watch from 17:55 your auto focus starts to act up and just before 17:79 you should see it (Floater, Dust-NOT, Ghost busters) just above you right eye it comes back into the video and drops down towards your shoulder. Jeez this is hard but after practicing in front of a mirror for 10 mins I put the horn up and hit some super high clean clear notes! Definitely a new daily habit. Thanks Charlie!

You changed my whole attitude for horn playing. Former teacher told me to get a bigger MP for larger lips. I never could increase my range. This 'in the red' idea' has what I've done all my life. Never could get above B flat. Going back to smaller MP and stay out of the red.

Great video, thanks for all of your great work! Regarding camera focus: I agree with other commenters that for this particular video, you probably could get by with switching to manual focus and using a smaller aperture (larger f-stop number). However, when shooting a more dynamic scene, having accurate auto-focus is desirable. I'm guessing you have an older model Canon. Newer models since the Canon 70D (including the 80D, 800D, and 77D) have a much improved autofocus technology called "Dual Pixel Autofocus" which does not suffer from the issues you are encountering.

After working your exercices, something was missing though. i didnt know how to faster the air. I found that pushing with my abdomen and slowing it down with my diaphragm raised the pressure of the air.

You've helped me so much with my trumpet playing, I was glad that you asked for help with something I can do! Not sure how old your canon camera is, but if it's relatively new it should have a face tracking auto focus mode you can find in your settings. Maybe you already got an answer, but when u lean to the left and expose more of the window and bright light behind you, the camera focuses on the window. Great video!
Eeek, will attempt to get this going. Also try to find an option for depth of field on the camera and set it so both you and the background are roughly in focus rather than one or the other

My analogy with many trumpet instructional videos (as great as they are) is like instructing someone who is 4'-6" tall about how to dunk a basketball in a 10' goal. Without unlimited buzz capabilities no amount of effort is going to make any difference. First make the player 7'-6" tall and then teach them how to dunk. The only way to achieve unlimited buzz capabilities is custom mouthpiece designing which is what I do. Instantaneous improvement is exactly what can happen. It's almost 100% about lip interaction with the mouthpiece. Because we can't modify our anatomy, we are left with only the mouthpiece. Changing the trumpet has very little to do with it. Learning becomes automatic once the buzz problem has been solved. It's like telling everyone to wear size 7 shoes no matter what, just make your foot fit. Wrong answer. We don't all fit into a traditional mouthpiece. Trying that for 40 years didn't work for me. I think someone who can naturally play and buzz easily creates a certain disconnect with a player who can't do it no matter how hard they try. Now you can do it or at least you have that hope and an option.
Great video! The camera problem is that the middle point of the film, is the background wall. When the surface of your body is smaller than the background, then the camera focus on the background. This could be solved if you are more in the middle. Thanks for video! It helps me a lot!

Nice videos. Thanks for posting them. I did find the focus going in and out to be very distracting tho. Narrow depth of field shooting is lovely for art photography but for instructional video I'm not sure it serves you. If you are going to use it, at least use manual focus. You are sitting still so setting your camera to one focus setting should work fine especially if you widen your depth -of-field a bit (larger f-stop number) and will eliminate the auto-focus drift entirely. I finally recognised my problem: my lips do exactly what you demonstrated not to do. I tried the last several days to correct that with just lip buzzing, which I guess I got a tiny bit better, but as soon as I poick up my moutpiece/trumpet the lips get to that old position. Its also a really bad buzz, not consistent and no pitch variations are possible. I have sometimes the feeling my lips are to firm. Any tips on how to "unlearn" this wrong lip position?

Embarking on my journey to play trumpet again thanks to you Charlie. Embouchure has always been my problem and I have never had a teacher who has addressed it properly. Now I will learn and achieve that tone and ease of joyous playing.
Glad to meet another buzzer! I got some of these tips from Stamp and Thompson book, but not all. I also use a piano to find the notes. Not many good trumpet players, and I am not including myself, advocate whisper tones and buzzing today.

With four years of lessons with Jimmy Stamp in the early 70’s, I never began with lip buzzing. Always started as you demonstrated with the mouthpiece and piano. It’s a challenge lips alone. But it makes sense as I’m returning to the trumpet after decades away.
This is great. I started trumpet 50 years ago, and this is what I was missing. I put the trumpet down when my mentor died, a long time ago. I picked up the horn a few years ago, and hoped I wouldn't have the same problems, but I did. So I played a few years, and put it down again. There's more to music than just lips, but I'm going to be trying this. Thanks.
Also, when I picked up the horn again, I was trying the Mysterytomastery program. I had high hopes. .

Debbie, that's cool! I didn't help that one of my best friends ended up Maynard Ferguson's lead player. He used to buzz his mouthpiece all the time. Even when we went to court after being caught racing our cars after band practice. Now I know what he was doing.
G, I'm kinda relearning a new embouchure, since I had braces as an adult. Didn't have them when I was younger and playing the trumpet. I find I have a whole new set of challenges...just not the same mouth! I find I have too much movement in the red in my embouchure as I change ranges. Mr. Porter makes this look so easy!

thanks Charlie-- every athletic endeavor relies on maintaining "form" and brass embouchure is no different. We are creating the reed that a sax player simply installs in a mouthpiece --out of lip tissue!!--- not always easy and often requires your approach with buzzing and mpc then playing with singing sound. Some lucky people seem to just "get it" but I sure have been helped by your explanations and have performed some very difficult music on trumpet. I will add these lip buzz ideas to my regular practice. thanks!

Just played a couple of your videos in the background while cooking dinner and buzzing along a bit, great tips already! Everybody mentions curling in the lips but you mentioning they should only move closer to the teeth and not actually curl immediately worked for me :) I'll definitely sit down and go through your content over the next couple of weeks, personal progress is always the best inspiration to me!

There are a few rules that NEED to be followed when doing any lip (free form) buzzing. 1. The chops must be saturated w saliva (even if you normally play dry) 2. Never lip buzz on a fatigued (tired) embouchure 3. The airflow must ALWAYS be downward 4. NEVER tongue attack a lip buzz, ALWAYS use a whooooo no tongue air attack 5. Never lip buzz below a 2nd line G in the staff 6. Never just use lip buzzing as a warm-up Lip buzzing is generally used to firm up a flabby chin area and helps with increasing embouchure vibrating fluency overall. Charlie, I "briefly" met you w Wayne Daniels at Sunfest '92 at the Arturo Sandoval show. Then saw you again w Wynton in '94 when you guys were trading solos. I never got a chance to play w you though as I was just getting my chops together when you left West Palm around '95-ish
Why airflow has to go down? When playing trumpet you want it to go straight I think
Are you sure about all that? You contradict what the video shows but don't provide any rationale, let alone evidence. I'll go with the video.

My band teacher was an accomplished trumpet performer and musical arranger, in addition to our teacher, and I was always in awe of him when he would pick up his trumpet and play so much as a scale. This and your other video about embouchure are brilliant! At the start of this video I couldn’t even lip buzz, never mind produce a note. By the end, I could play the first five notes of the Bb major scale up and down just with my lips buzzing!!! I will be doing these exercises every day. Thank you!
I can not buzzing without the mouthpiece. What I need to do? Because everything you said is very true, but it is really hard for me to do it without the mouthpiece.
HI Charlie thanks a bunch, this is answered a lot of questions for me to why I am not getting good sound. Now in relation to you asking for advice with the auto focus this is going to sound BONKERS, but the camera was picking up on a lot of OTHER (ghost busters) activity in your room. Lets for giggles say this is true and you are a believer - go to 1:00 and watch just after you pick up the mouth piece you will see what I call a floater rise from the bottom of the screen and float of towards your right, (I know its just dust, NOT) fast forward and watch from 17:55 your auto focus starts to act up and just before 17:79 you should see it (Floater, Dust-NOT, Ghost busters) just above you right eye it comes back into the video and drops down towards your shoulder.

Man I wish you had been my teacher 50 years ago! Your videos are such revelations I had no idea trumpet playing was so technical. I must have had the worst embouchure on the planet.
Jeez this is hard but after practicing in front of a mirror for 10 mins I put the horn up and hit some super high clean clear notes! Definitely a new daily habit.

You changed my whole attitude for horn playing. Former teacher told me to get a bigger MP for larger lips. I never could increase my range. This 'in the red' idea' has what I've done all my life. Never could get above B flat. Going back to smaller MP and stay out of the red.

Great video, thanks for all of your great work! Regarding camera focus: I agree with other commenters that for this particular video, you probably could get by with switching to manual focus and using a smaller aperture (larger f-stop number).
However, when shooting a more dynamic scene, having accurate auto-focus is desirable. I'm guessing you have an older model Canon. Newer models since the Canon 70D (including the 80D, 800D, and 77D) have a much improved autofocus technology called "Dual Pixel Autofocus" which does not suffer from the issues you are encountering.

After working your exercices, something was missing though. i didnt know how to faster the air. I found that pushing with my abdomen and slowing it down with my diaphragm raised the pressure of the air.

You've helped me so much with my trumpet playing, I was glad that you asked for help with something I can do! Not sure how old your canon camera is, but if it's relatively new it should have a face tracking auto focus mode you can find in your settings. Love your videos and appreciate your easy to follow teaching!

My analogy with many trumpet instructional videos (as great as they are) is like instructing someone who is 4'-6" tall about how to dunk a basketball in a 10' goal. Without unlimited buzz capabilities no amount of effort is going to make any difference. First make the player 7'-6" tall and then teach them how to dunk. The only way to achieve unlimited buzz capabilities is custom mouthpiece designing which is what I do. Instantaneous improvement is exactly what can happen. It's almost 100% about lip interaction with the mouthpiece. Because we can't modify our anatomy, we are left with only the mouthpiece. Changing the trumpet has very little to do with it. Learning becomes automatic once the buzz problem has been solved. It's like telling everyone to wear size 7 shoes no matter what, just make your foot fit. Wrong answer. We don't all fit into a traditional mouthpiece. Trying that for 40 years didn't work for me. I think someone who can naturally play and buzz easily creates a certain disconnect with a player who can't do it no matter how hard they try. Now you can do it or at least you have that hope and an option.

The camera problem is that the middle point of the film, is the background wall. When the surface of your body is smaller than the background, then the camera focus on the background.
This could be solved if you are more in the middle.

I did find the focus going in and out to be very distracting tho. Narrow depth of field shooting is lovely for art photography but for instructional video I'm not sure it serves you. If you are going to use it, at least use manual focus. You are sitting still so setting your camera to one focus setting should work fine especially if you widen your depth -of-field a bit (larger f-stop number) and will eliminate the auto-focus drift entirely. I finally recognised my problem: my lips do exactly what you demonstrated not to do. I tried the last several days to correct that with just lip buzzing, which I guess I got a tiny bit better, but as soon as I poick up my moutpiece/trumpet the lips get to that old position. Its also a really bad buzz, not consistent and no pitch variations are possible. I have sometimes the feeling my lips are to firm. Any tips on how to "unlearn" this wrong lip position?
