I fucking love Golf's in general. The idea of taking my favorite car and making it a full blown performance car really makes me happy. I can't wait to pick one up.
Thanks for posting this. As a former WRX owner and current 2010 Charger SRT8 owner, I have enjoyed some completely different long-term driving experiences. With the announcement of the 2015 Golf R, and the never-ending gas price increases, I am excited for this VW to hit the States.
My local VW dealer noted August 2015 is when they will likely have the first R's. Standard equipment includes Leather and Navigation. No sunroof though, but this will likely be offered later down the road during it's 5 year cycle. Expecting about $39,000. A similarly equipped GTI (manual) is about $33,000.
Great review. My first love affair with newer VW was in 2006 with a DSG GTI, and since then I've own two more GTI and a GLI all DSGs. I think the Mk7 Golf R is a fantastic recipe that has worked great through the years. Really looking forward to driving one and then owning and modifying it. :)
When the Golf R comes to the USA, also in spring-summer of 2015, it'll have 292-hp, 280 lb-ft of torque, and get 23/30 mpg in the city and on the highway, respectively. Unfortunately, the 6-speed manual won't be available until a few months later, according to the VW web site. The "ouch" comes when you look at the price. The R's base price is $39,090. That's almost 15k more than the base GTI price. I'm not sure it'll be worth it. The other thing is I don't know if the R will be offered as a 2-door, in addition to the 4-door. I really like the 2-door GTI and would probably pass on the R if I had to get a 4-door. If anyone has any more verified info about this I'd appreciate it if they would let me know. Thanks.
Base price for golf R is about 36k for the base model dsg. Estimate 35k for the manual. The outside may look somewhat similar but the haldex generation 5 is much different, sway bars and suspension also different, in addition to reenforced engine components. It is in fact worth it. Gti on the other hand is a bit over priced. I bought my 4 door dsg mkv for 23k otd with xenon standard. Now people have to buy lighting package and for a 2 door...and it costs $3000 more than a similarly performances gti from previous generation. The new golf r however is faster than the sti 0-60 ( evidence from a video that showed manual s3 being faster than the 2015 sti) and shares underpinnings with the seat Leon 280 that lapped nurburgring under 8 min. That car's biggest modification were the sport cup tires. Put the same tires on the golf r and you'll very likely break sub 8 min performance. The 2011 sti can't even come close to that performance considering it had to have " safety equipment " for its run on the nurburgring
It better eventually come with stick, or I can't buy it! No automatics for me, ever....driving with finger tips is just not right, don't care how fast it shifts etc, stick has control, feedback, and it keeps ya AWAKE, cus you are actively DRIVING, not going along for the roll. My current GTI is Flawless 116,000+ great fun miles, my last Jetta GLX VR6 316,000 miles, this GTI is much better, the Golf r will be a blast, with stick, the 4 motion gives that added grip, and the extra punch of more HP and Torque, if it ain't GERMAN it ain't a car. The S3 is coming maybe here, but it also looks like only DSG, nope,n ot for me, STICK, The golf R will have stick soon, after initial introduction...2 door also, I don't need four doors, costs more, and 2 more operating windows etc, that don't need, less is more better. Golf R is not a GTI, much beefed up suspension components..
cengeb I certainly agree with you about the stick. I would also not buy a sports car without a manual gearbox. If more people actually knew how much fun it is to drive one, they wouldn't go for DCT's and automatics. I'm not sure if VW is going to offer the Golf R as a 3-door here in the States. They don't say on their web site yet. I hope they do.
I was at the dealer in Ajax today. They don't have any GTI that are 2015. If they did I would have bought one today. They are about one month away so I was told.
david dykeman I never said they were at the dealers, I said they we're at the VW main office in Ajax. The employees are driving them. They aren't available to the public yet.
Amazing car, it will be my next. Not only is it finally worth the extra cost over a GTI, it is a killer bargain vs. the CLA45 and STI. How do you feel it compares to the CLA45? Thanks for the first review across the pond!
Update of my previous comment: I've done some more research about the 2015 Golf R, and it seems it will only be offered as a 4-door here in the USA. I'm not sure about Canada. That's a real pity.
darkpill But what you don't know is the quattro on the A3 is not real quattro. It's just named quattro but actually it is 4motion.Both golf mk7 and A3 are based on "MQB".As a fact a transverse engine fwd car couldn't have quattro on it.
If you want to tune it, you need to buy it with the manual transmission, but if you plan to keep it stock, the DSG transmission is way faster. A wonderful car.: )
The DSG is way faster tuned as well. You don't have to replace the clutch as soon as you get a tune like you do with a manual either. Tune only DSG Golf R's are running low 12's in the quarter mile with DSG.
cengeb not the same as a R32 I test drove the R and ran back to the R32 at full speed, the feel of power delivery could not even come close to the R32. Yeah the V6 use more gas but it makes up for it in feel and power delivery. Watch the 5 th gear R32 episode after watching a golf R vid and you will see. Nothing comes close to the feel of the 3.2 engine and if you want more power slap a super charger on it
I had a VR6 GLX Jetta 2.8, was great, but, all the updates are making this 2.0t amazing, lighter, fuel efficient, smaller it breathes! Less weight over front wheels, turbo spools up fast! Wonder if the 3.2 is what is in Audi S stuff with updates? VW is really making that 2.0T a real work horse, all kinds of versions
It's an amazing car. I own mk5 gti stage1 tune and 1st gear dsg :) always have traction issues as it makes 165 front wheel kws. My next drive will be golf r and mk7 looks so sharp. With only stage1 tune it ll shave off at least 0.5 seconds to 100 :) already making 5 s to 100 is good enough for me. Subaru? I have driven 2008 sti and imo golf s build quality and driving sensation is way better than subaru.
With a manual gearbox and electronic handbrake I'd hate to parallel park on a steep hill. What was so hard to use about a regular hand brake :( Also if your battery goes flat as friends have had.. you can't move your car to convenient place to get a jump start. (Friends parked nose-in at a ski station car park and had to wait for everyone to leave so they could get close to the car to charge it!)
The choice is all about what you value in a car and how much you are willing to spend (My numbers are for the US or projected for the US). Let's look at the competitors. 1) WRX - not a hatch, down on hp and torque compared to the R. But the big difference for a lot of people is that the WRX is just too "boy racer" looking on the outside and not sufficiently refined on the inside. Now if you don't care about the exterior looks or interior refinement, the WRX is an excellent value. 2) WRX STI- hardcore rally car which the R is not. 3) BMW M235i: RWD dynamics and probably $10,000 more reasonably equipped than the R. Also not a hatch 4) Audi S3 - same car in a sedan (US) with the Audi name plate and signature Audi interior. That is what you get for your extra $5-10K 5) Audi TT-S- Its a hatch, but the rear seats will probably be of limited utility and it will be even more expensive than the S3 Bottom line: The R is expected to sticker for around $35K in the US and probably go out the door around $40k with a few options. There are really few direct competitors at this price point offering this level of performance, sophistication and utility.
Throw in the fact that it can be tuned for $800 to produce 360+ hp. And 350 tq and the game changes dramatically. Now we have a car up 50 hp and like 80 tq on an STI...with an interior much nicer than a base Cayman. And it has that transmission which only pales compared to VW's own.
It's most likely going to cost around 30k I was reading that VW makes for the states make their cars in Mexico because it's less expensive than making it in Europe. So he was prob talking about Canada when he said around 40k plus prices haven't been confirmed so it was a guess.
My 2010 GTI is German, i think 2015 starts the Mexico Golf production, my last Jetta VR6 GLX was Mexico, great car, it only went 316,000 fun miles. The dashboard ws made in U.S.A., parts from Italy, Austria, Germany, pick a country, no Chinese though Current GTI has German assy engine is from Hungary, VW is all over the world. Have an Audi A4 S line Chinese light electronics in a GERMAN made Audi, weird, the electronics for the HID are stamped Chinese, first time ever did I see that! With German Goodyear tires, another first Our 2013 Tiguan SEL German, with a wiring Harness in the back from..South Africa! All good, fit and finish superb, flawless superb reliable and funf un fun. If it ain't German, it ain't a car, simple
WAIT...you say Summer 2014?? but we have to wait a year? Man, I wish that was true but clearly you meant 2015... Thanks for the review, I am looking forward to owning one of these(or the R400 :)
the wise car shopper doesn't make his decision on price like that, he bases it on value per dollar. A loaded golf R is worth the extra money over a loaded wrx, the interior is so much better then the wrx, the car is lighter, has a better engine... it's not even close really, the new golf r is in another league as the perfect all-rounder street car.
The base R is approx the same price as a GTI with aftermarket engine mods, which can't put down the power as well. AWD makes 350-400 hp possible, something I am personally uncomfortable having in a FWD car. That is big block Chevy and super high tech Porsche motor power. 2.0 liters....
I think this review talks too much about all the options on the car and not enough about the actual driving experience. I might as well read a brochure.

Mook aton I don't understand whats wrong with paying that much for a hatchback? Does the class of a vehicle really decide its price? That just doesn't make any sense.
Because a hatchback was always the economical atlernative to an SUV. They were popular because they were cheap little fun cars with a practical purpose. It's just my opinion that when you get into these higher numbers, there are just better options available. To each his own, just my opinion on the matter.
Well there you go the previous R36 Passat has all of this and on the second hand car market in Australia at $30000 why would you buy a new vehicle. New car prices in Australia are an absolute rip off for car lovers . What a shame ..
Not a fan. Having both Subarus and VWs past and present, they sure don't make them like they used to. Both the Golf R (US Spec) and the 2015 STI uses the "brake nanny" in their AWD system - with the latter (15' STI) becoming a track monster. Yes Audi (VAG) came out with quattro (AWD) system first when they introduced their rally cars that changed the game of Rally back in the 80s, but manufacturers like Subaru (and others like the EVO and Nissan GT-R) have caught on (equal) and if not surpassed what Audi originally started. VW 4Motion system, Quattro it is not. IMO, there are really only two true AWD car manufacturer out there that specializes in AWD: Audi with their quattro and Subaru with their symmetric AWD systems. Both on equal level. The VW 4motion is a joke compared to these. Stick with the GTi. I would rather have a light weight FWD sub-compact hatch that goes like stink oppose to a middle weight AWD sub-compact hatch that is subpar. As if the current cars aren't getting enough weight put on with all the safety and technologies inside the car, having AWD added to a sub-compact hatch =???? How much does this car weigh?
I like VW but 40K plus taxes that's like 44k , ill go 4 older M3 or Audi S4 for 30 and spend 14 K on upgrades;) I own 2012 Jetta GLI and let me tell u something , they don't make VW like they use 2........its sad but true.....
Lord Staind Good point! but then again its only winter 4 months a year.... you have the rest of the summer to enjoy your ride! If you drive in the city most the time the BMW is prefect but If your more in the country a AWD is definitively a better choice.
Reviewers who treat you like you can't read are the worst. Matt Farah and Chris Harris treat you like you want to have fun. This guy treats you like you are too lazy to read a spec sheet. If he would've mentioned the defeat-able traction control on the 2015 I would've let all of this slide.
can't get fuglier than a golf, I guess the VW group needs to protect their audi brand, sucks for vw owners though. i think homer simpson could've done a better job.... oh well whatever- next!
You're forgetting the larger turbo and the reinforced engine internals, there's also a lot of kit that comes on standard in the R and which are cost options on a base GTI
What do you think I'm wrong about? The info comes right from the VW web site. If you go to the Golf R info page, you'll see that the base price is $39,090 as I said. And it won't be available as a 2-door-at least not initially.
one of the boringest cars, this is soooo 2009 lookswise, time for volks to desgin something new....this looks like that 09 golf with some fast and furious add on kits
Terrible review. He keeps repeating himself and doesn't really sell the performance of the car. He was in Switzerland for Pete's sake, couldn't he have found a mountain road to show some capability? Whoever paid him to go to Europe and give such a dead fish handshake to the car was wasting money. Awful.
looks are subjective. the interior of the STI is cheap and pretty ugly/dated looking, and personally the car is fucking butt ugly. i'm kind of apprehensive about hot hatch cars too, but the new golf R is not too bad looking IMO. the cars are really close in performance and every review i've seen has said the STI has a much much poorer ride quality. the DCC option in the golf looks more alluring in that sense but it's all a matter of taste. i have a girlfriend who has a stage 2 '07 STI and the car is a fucking monster, however it's noisy as hell in the cabin and it feels like the wheels are made of concrete, REALLY uncomfortable ride quality. Also in Canada the price for a 2015 STI and Golf R are almost identical. so stop yer midget hating.
naaaah. as much as i respect the STI's ability the mk 7 golf R has it pretty well beat in every category. plus i'm into midgets. check out the mk 7 R's with the armytrix exhaust. total beast mode 🇩🇪
bitch please the STI looks like stevie wonder designed it. and the interior is tackier than your jokes. also if you like an inferior suspension and engine have at it.
I fucking love Golf's in general. The idea of taking my favorite car and making it a full blown performance car really makes me happy. I can't wait to pick one up.
seems like an easy decision for you. what is your annual income and are you married with kids? random curiosity...
Thanks for posting this. As a former WRX owner and current 2010 Charger SRT8 owner, I have enjoyed some completely different long-term driving experiences. With the announcement of the 2015 Golf R, and the never-ending gas price increases, I am excited for this VW to hit the States.

I like the design of the vehicle and its performance
Great review as usual. Concise and entertaining to watch.

Check VW's site now. The now correctly show the $36500 base price and $39000 loaded price, both with DSG. Manuals will be $1100 less when they arrive.
There's a 2015 GTI that is around the VW office in Ajax...I see it all the time! I've also seen the new Audi Q3 on the road too.
What else do you see running around the VW office in Ajax? Any Amaroks/pickups?
I was at the dealer in Ajax today. They don't have any GTI that are 2015. If they did I would have bought one today. They are about one month away so I was told.
david dykeman I never said they were at the dealers, I said they we're at the VW main office in Ajax. The employees are driving them. They aren't available to the public yet.
This guy in just 6 minutes talked more about actual car details than what they do in the american version of Top Gear, in one season.
This car is really nice. Just needs a custom exhaust... Tints... And nice set of rims and we good to go
Question for you, how do you get to go to al these exotic places to do car reviews?
Please do explain, cheers!
Amazing car, it will be my next. Not only is it finally worth the extra cost over a GTI, it is a killer bargain vs. the CLA45 and STI. How do you feel it compares to the CLA45? Thanks for the first review across the pond!
Nice car in 3 door !!!
Will the TDi version be available with 4Motion AWD as an option in Canada like in Europe ?? !!
Is it symmetrical AWD or does it apply power to the rear wheels only when needed?
From what I've heard in the reviews, the system will split the power heavily to the rear if the front starts to slip.
Update of my previous comment: I've done some more research about the 2015 Golf R, and it seems it will only be offered as a 4-door here in the USA. I'm not sure about Canada. That's a real pity.
can u turn off the traction control?
Zack great review. Could you comment on the interior fit/finish differences and quality between S3 and the R?
When is the new generation Golf Sportswagon coming to Canada?
I'd pay $4k more for that Audi badge anyday...
Of course you would, because paying extra for the same thing is fashionable and makes you sound cool.
darkpill Audi uses the Haldex sytem in the S3....
darkpill But what you don't know is the quattro on the A3 is not real quattro. It's just named quattro but actually it is 4motion.Both golf mk7 and A3 are based on "MQB".As a fact a transverse engine fwd car couldn't have quattro on it.
Lee Fuchen Correct me if I am wrong. But aren't a4 and a6 also FWD with Quattro?
40K for a golf is crazy. Rather put that money on a mustang GT or any other RWDs.
I really like the sharp exterior design compared to the rounded design cues of the Mk.6
If you want to tune it, you need to buy it with the manual transmission, but if you plan to keep it stock, the DSG transmission is way faster. A wonderful car.: )

Great review!! love the car!!
Will the TDI come with AWD ????
R is only awd model in golf line.
A 2 L FOR A R VERSION WOT HAPPENED TO THE V6 ENGINE OF OLD ...
4X4 OK BUT A BIGGER ENGINE YES .
VR6 is not as efficient, or meeting emissions etc, 4 cyl is lighter, more power 300HP out of 4 cyl!! lots of torque

My 2013 Golf R was around 33k to 34k. This is 40k wow! I think they are not going to sell well due to the high price.
I want the Golf GTD (GTI diesel) or better the Scirocco.
WAIT...you say Summer 2014?? but we have to wait a year? Man, I wish that was true but clearly you meant 2015...
Thanks for the review, I am looking forward to owning one of these(or the R400 :)
it's for the Golf, not Golf R
I just wish we could get this car in a 2 door version in America...
I think it will come in a year or two
good review
is there still a golf GT-D?
Yep
good video doc though
This square minivan's design looks like something from the '80
I would really love to own one of these with a manual transmission. Maybe after I graduate.
Golf R is as cool as Audi S3. German cars are the best as usual, even in smaller classes.
Won't a wise shopper go for a WRX for 30,000 $ instead of 40,000 $ for the Golf R?
WRX STi with 300hp and fully loaded in Canada is $45,000. The Golf R comes fully loaded, the only upgrade is the DSG tranny.
people who want a Golf R probably don't want a STI, and vice versa.
The STI will destroy its driver daily and the WRX itself hitting 4.9 to 60.
the wise car shopper doesn't make his decision on price like that, he bases it on value per dollar.
Ty for saying "simplicity of use" and not "simplicity of usage"
My grandma called, she wants her hatchback back
LOOK THIS AUDI S3 TEST AND OTHER CARS LAPTIMES
L'avis complet de Soheil Ayari sur l'Audi S3 Sportback
395HP shares similar with Porsche...they did a test Audi S3 Golf R Golf R is the better handling and much cheaper better deal...
Nice vw golf r
when did this had a 2.5 engine ?
The Audi doesn't only cost more when buying, it will also fetch more while selling.
Brand new car and already drivers seat is worn out... WTF?!
30k I think not. I would rather the fun and handling of the Ford Fiesta ST for only 22k
太棒了!
I think this review talks too much about all the options on the car and not enough about the actual driving experience. I might as well read a brochure.

Like all three previous Golf R models, the all-new model transfers its power to the road via a permanent all-wheel-drive system; in this case, the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex® coupling. To help ensure great chassis dynamics, there’s a new sport suspension, a new variable-ratio steering system, and a stability control system which can now be deactivated for track driving. The most powerful and fuel-efficient Golf R will be launched in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2015 in four-door form only.
I had to stop when he said $40k..... Not paying $40k for a freakin hatchback.
It will be closer to 35k, not 40k. Good review but don't scare people like that lol
MK6 R was 40K in Canada
I wouldn't pay 35k for a hatchback either.
To each his own, just my opinion on the matter.
so much nicer than that Made in Mexico GTI they're trying to pawn off...
Well there you go the previous R36 Passat has all of this and on the second hand car market in Australia at $30000 why would you buy a new vehicle. New car prices in Australia are an absolute rip off for car lovers . What a shame ..
It's very nice but for $10,000 more I'll stick to my S4.
At this price you could get the new BMW M235i....
hahah, I know right...
Lord Staind Good point! but then again its only winter 4 months a year.... you have the rest of the summer to enjoy your ride! If you drive in the city most the time the BMW is prefect but If your more in the country a AWD is definitively a better choice.
mproductionsmusik Well just this year, it started to snow from end November to just now april.
More than 4 snowy months in our great Canada, haha.
mproductionsmusik dosen't have to be just snow! out here where i am on the canadian west coast it rains a lot which makes rwd not always so fun =(
Canada is 6 months of winter and 6 months of summer..
Reviewers who treat you like you can't read are the worst. Matt Farah and Chris Harris treat you like you want to have fun. This guy treats you like you are too lazy to read a spec sheet.
If he would've mentioned the defeat-able traction control on the 2015 I would've let all of this slide.
2.5l 5cylinder...WTF are you smoking??????
can't get fuglier than a golf, I guess the VW group needs to protect their audi brand, sucks for vw owners though. i think homer simpson could've done a better job.... oh well whatever- next!
VW is dumb with the R, $10k more than base GTi for 2 extra spinning wheels, need to make a base R version thats $2-3K more than GTI.
You're forgetting the larger turbo and the reinforced engine internals, there's also a lot of kit that comes on standard in the R and which are cost options on a base GTI
bigger brakes, more torque more HP, other upgrades over GTI 4 motion, traction, changes everything
Unfortunately, it's actually almost 15k more than a base GTI-$39,090 compared to $24,395, and is only available in the 4-door version.
Jeff Puha Wrong Jeff
What do you think I'm wrong about? The info comes right from the VW web site. If you go to the Golf R info page, you'll see that the base price is $39,090 as I said. And it won't be available as a 2-door-at least not initially.
Zach, you are losing weight....are you ok? You dont look your robust self.
dull styling still especially the dash..
Oh, look... 4Motion.
is it made in Mexico ?
No, the Golf R is made in Germany (along with the eGolf). The rest of the Golf and GTI line is made in Mexico.
That's good to hear... I've owned a Mexican made VW and it was nothing but a problems.
I've got a 2 year old GLI made in Mexico. No problems here.
I must have gotten one of the copies made when someone was having a bad day....
Amazing car, but really.. who's actually going to buy a 40k$+ golf.
The same people who pay $44k for an Audi A3.
people who appreciate it for what it is. i mean people do spend $40k+ on a STI or Evo
The same people who pay an extra ten grand to customize their Mini.
Golf R is not just a Golf, just like GTI ain't a golf, entirely different cars
This guy's murder.
Bmw 2m is much cooler
Same garbage AWD system in this? Fail.
I really hope its symmetrical
아저씨 발음이 아나운서 뺨칩니다.
Awesome car but easily some of the worst journalism I've ever seen. "... It really scoots"?? C'mon.
what's wrong with that?
one of the boringest cars, this is soooo 2009 lookswise, time for volks to desgin something new....this looks like that 09 golf with some fast and furious add on kits
Terrible review. He keeps repeating himself and doesn't really sell the performance of the car. He was in Switzerland for Pete's sake, couldn't he have found a mountain road to show some capability? Whoever paid him to go to Europe and give such a dead fish handshake to the car was wasting money. Awful.
Do not buy German cars.I prefer cars made in Korea or Japan.
VWs keep getting fatter and fatter.
it's lighter and more powerful
VW Golf R ...$40k not including Nav, etc. Give me the WRX STI w/ awd... looks better! The Golf always reminds me of midgets. VW are expensive junks.
looks are subjective. the interior of the STI is cheap and pretty ugly/dated looking, and personally the car is fucking butt ugly. i'm kind of apprehensive about hot hatch cars too, but the new golf R is not too bad looking IMO. the cars are really close in performance and every review i've seen has said the STI has a much much poorer ride quality. the DCC option in the golf looks more alluring in that sense but it's all a matter of taste. i have a girlfriend who has a stage 2 '07 STI and the car is a fucking monster, however it's noisy as hell in the cabin and it feels like the wheels are made of concrete, REALLY uncomfortable ride quality. Also in Canada the price for a 2015 STI and Golf R are almost identical. so stop yer midget hating.
then get the STi..eh!
naaaah. as much as i respect the STI's ability the mk 7 golf R has it pretty well beat in every category. plus i'm into midgets. check out the mk 7 R's with the armytrix exhaust. total beast mode 🇩🇪
VW's are clown mobiles.....are you Bozo the Clown?
bitch please the STI looks like stevie wonder designed it. and the interior is tackier than your jokes. also if you like an inferior suspension and engine have at it.
