    Great review as always Guido! I have a manual 7R and couldn't agree with you more(biased I know, but if i didn't think so I wouldn't have it!). The engagement with the 6 speed while driving is what enthusiasts really want in a hot hatch. It is just so well balanced and capable. Sure it is quick in a straight line, but once you get into the curvy technical bits it is just confidence inspiring. And lets not forget it has five seats and a big trunk! Bravo VWAG!!

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Trevor Cook Haha, I'm sorry :) I can tell you though most GTIs make more power than claimed and as far as straight line speed goes the difference really wasn't night and day because the GTI has great torque. The R really outperformces it in corners and in the wet, but that doesn't mean the GTI is bad. Still a very very fun car, so you should be happy Trevor :D - Guido

    Your reviews continue to look more and more professional Guido! This is TV quality stuff! It was great to see how much you enjoyed the Golf R! I'm starting to like sleepers more and more as well and don't know if I could live with an STI with a huge wing either. If I wanted a fun 4 door car, this would be one of the cars I'd seriously consider. I just wish they came with the same great panoramic moonroof that you can get in the GTI. I know it adds weight in the worst possible place, but I love the views it provides.

    I have watched dozens of Golf R reviews on TH-cam over the last few weeks - I am considering a 2017 facelifted car (310 BHP, manual transmission) - but yours is certainly one of the best. After a recent test drive, I think the R is in a different league to the S3 (which i used to own) but interesting to hear that you think it is also better than the (much more expensive) RS3. VW's masterstroke was to offer the R as a manual or DSG...

      +Nik Brudar I wasn't ready to love it this much, but it's a cracking car. All good reviewers will tell you that actually. There was a great comment on one of the EVO car of the Year vids from 2014 or 2013, that really describes the Golf R perfectly. Check that video out and I bet you want to drive one as badly as I did after seeing it :)

    Great video... I have the a Lapiz Blue Mk7R Manual.... it is easily the best car I've owned... for an extra $800 I got the APR stage 1 tune and this thing is a now a mega-beast.
    It's perfect b/c as you say, the car is unassuming and no one thinks it is fast, so when I pass a 2015 M3, the look on their face is priceless lol. And this thing handles like a champ!

    Another very good video with review. Honestly did not expect you would be so enthusiastic about this Golf R. Not sure why a lot of reviewers (apart from Evo) made quite a few critics. this is definitely a great one to drive as you said. The only thing I could say about this car is that it does not look aggressive enough when looking at the front. the rear is definitely cool with 4 exhausts...

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nick Regnier I thought Evo and also Chris Harris and other were very postive about the Golf R. What were some of the critics you heard, I would like to know if I overlooked something :) The appeal of the R is that it is such a sleeper. Even the GTI looks meanser with those red lines around the headlights. I like that. You can always fix it with some aftermarket glory, I guess :)

    Wow what a stunning color and configuration! Very elegant and stylish, yet a rebel under the skin. Superb combo. I'm a Mercedes guy but with the kind of customers AMG is recently attracting, from the A45 to the GT S, a classy Golf R seems like the much better choice. Understatement, no show-off factor but still high quality components and very fun to drive! AMGs sadly became show-off cars for posers. They used to be the connoisseur's choice but not anymore.
    But the best part is the fact that it's also available as a station wagon! I see them quite often here, great cars for sure!
    Thanks for another superb review Guido! Would be nice if Ford could provide a RS for you as well.

      +slaWterCH Thanks for the great comment, buddy ! I fully agree with you on the customerbase. Still need to drive a facelifted A45. The Ford RS will be hard to get, since the demand for testcars will be so high, but I will see what I can do :)

      Nice, where are you from? I ordered mine with dsg, carbon fibre mirror caps, silver, pretorias, DCC, parking sensors, rear back camera, keyless and the big sound system. Got it for about $10k USD / less than new because they have a campaign here in Sweden so they are really aggresively priced to compete with the focus RS. So I bought one!

    • @Doggepp
      @Doggepp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice! I ordered with DSG, planning to eventually put a tune on it, and the clutch on the manual gives up on most Stage 1 tunes, and I fell in love with the DSG on my gti so..

    I'm curious to find out what you think of the new Focus RS but honestly, as you've said, I like performance cars that are subtle. No one does this better than VW/Audi Group. And the R is a true embodiment of that theme.

    Brilliant review Guido! We must be kindred spirits! I've been banging on to just about anybody that cares to listen how the gearing on the Cayman is just too long (140 kph in 2nd gear etc) and was disappointed that the Cayman R was similarly afflicted. Great for CO2 emission tests but just blunts enjoyment, and makes me not want to buy one (not that I could afford it). It does make me question the commitment of companies like Porsche to build the performance cars the hardcore enthusiast wants.. And now, to hear from you, for the first time from any review of the Golf R I've seen, that the manual has shorter ratios, even in top gear, is enough to fill my heart with joy and make me want to literally RUN down to my local VW dealer this very second and order one! At the moment I have a Mk7 GTI and it's been great but I think it's time to move on. I test drove a DSG equipped R last year and loved it. Only question remaining is, R or Clubsport.....???

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stan Hawrylak Thanks Stan ! I think EVO did bring that in a few of their videos too, mainly the 2014 car of the year where they complained about it in the GTS. For some reason it was less of a problem in the 911s to me with the 7spd manual. A friend of mine even changed from a manual Boxster S to a PDK, because it was too long geared for the mountain roads in switzerland. Would love to hear your thoughts about the R compared to the GTI, eventhough I read great things about the new Clubsport too. VW is in a hot hatch hot spot it seems :) Greetings, Guido

    • @SuperOrbit69
      @SuperOrbit69 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheGetawayer Comparing the R with the GTI, it really comes down to 4WD versus 2WD and their relative pros and cons. With the GTI, you feel the lighter weight so it's generally nimbler, but this time of year and with some wear on the front tyres, a lot of throttle modulation is required, even with the Performance Pack car with diff. Frustratingly so. Fresh front tyres make a huge difference to the GTI. It would still struggle to stay with the R on road however... I had a spirited test drive in the R and it was clear you could take big liberties with the throttle mid corner and it would just stick, no understeer at all which was impressive. But it felt a bit less subtle, more of a blunt instrument. The frame of reference is changing now though, as thoughts turn towards the Clubsport. The one disappointment is no Brembos or weight loss relative to the stock GTI. Even so, with the same power as the R, in favourable conditions, it's the quicker car point to point. Decisions, decisions...

    Guido, what a great video, as always! I would absolutely love to watch a video from you on the Honda S2000. It is, in my humble opinion, the best driver's car ever made. I have not driven the amazing driver's cars you have on your channel, such as the 911 and the GT4, but I have let owners of those cars drive my S2000 and, to my surprise, they agree with me! I know it's a long shot, but if you're ever in the state of Indiana (U.S.), I'd love to let you drive mine! Best wishes, brother.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Arthur Sperotto Thanks Arthur ! I hear so many great things about the S2000, but I've never been in one. They are super rare here in germany, where people drive TTs Z4s and Boxsters instead. Would I even fit being 6'4 ? I often struggled with japanese cars being too small for me :)

    • @PIchillin456
      @PIchillin456 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheGetawayer to be honest I don't think you will fit haha. I'm 6 feet tall and the S2000 is much to small for me. I can drive one, but I could never own one. I loved the drive but leg room and foot room were really limited for me and I couldn't spend more than an hour in it before I needed a break. I have long legs though.

    • @ArthurSperotto
      @ArthurSperotto 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheGetawayer You're very welcome! I believe you would fit without a problem. The seats go back a lot! There are no backseats, but plenty of room for the two occupants, while still giving you that tight cockpit feel. Matt Farah is 6'3 and *considerably* larger than you in.... um.... width (lol), and he has reviewed two S2000's. I can see a fat person having a problem, but not a tall person.

    • @LivingLifeSlower
      @LivingLifeSlower 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you drove the RS3 or the S3 I'd suggest that vehicle dynamics are pretty low down your list of priorities. the Golf Mk7 R, although better than previous versions, is not as crisp and nimble as people make out. It's frustratingly slow with a very narrow power band. I guess it's just because I'm used to cars twice the price.

    • @amitpatel3055
      @amitpatel3055 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've driven the R, S3 and RS3 and agree it has nothing to do with price having owned cars nearly twice the price. The RS3 is all about straight line pace and very little else in my book. The S3 is a touch heavier than the R which is why the R probably feels a little more nimble on its feet. Agree however that the power band is very narrow and like the review says, if gear changes are not "your thing", its best you get DSG. Can't fault the R in terms of ride and handling though. Its a great all rounder that few can match at that price bracket.

    Great review, Guido. I tried the Audi S3 and found it quite good as daily machine. But I didn't enjoy the DSG so much. This Golf R with a manual would suit me well and is reasonably anonymous, which I appreciate. VW could have avoided the 4 exhaust tips. Apart from that, the car looks great, has everything needed, seems to be comfortable with DCC for cruising, and curvy roads are made for the Golf R. Thanks for the great review. You're doing a good job. Do you know if "strietzel" Hans-Joachim Stuck really helped develop the car?
    Kind regards,
    Armand

    Conversely, the short gearing means you don't have to change gear that much if aren't in the mood, because it will happily pull from low speeds in fifth or sixth gear. Great car, great review.

      +evoermine Thanks ! True, but you will notice the higher rpm level once you driver faster than 50mph / 80km'h. On the autobahn it most noticable. Gives the car great bunch, but also like I said spoils the consumption abit. I really did like it

    I would love to buy a Golf R variant but they won't sell them in NA because of our challenged cousins to the south of Canada. I'd say the sweet spot for Audi would be the S3 sportback with a manual Guido. Good looking with a little more cargo space. Maybe the issue with the RS3 was the weight in the front of the car. The bigger and heavier engine just might not be as agile. They probably geared the Audi differently because the different characteristics of the RS engine. Anyways, I love your no nonsense, cut to the truth review style Guido!!

      +kevin n Thanks Kevin ! The S3 is a good car, but still not as playful as the Golf R. The Audi badge is a good selling point for some people, but I have a friend who owns the S3 ( he's AutomannTV on YT if you're interested ) and after testing the RS3 and Golf R he agreed with me. Currently has a new Focus RS on order, so can't wait to see how he likes that haha

      Ah the Ford RS. That is looking like a great package. The only thing I don't like about the Ford is that rather big wing. Too bad you can't order the RS without that wing to be even more discreet.
      I wonder how Audi changed the package. I'm not stuck on buying an Audi badge, I just need more space for "family stuff".

    The Getawayer, one reason that the new Golf R's may be much better than RS3 might be because VW tuned the car with a Porsche Veteran Legend who been driving many tournaments. Not sure Audi use him also? But yeah i understand thers many other factors than speed that makes a car good. What you guys think?

I had been interested in the R when I got my 2014 BMW 435 xDrive. Do you have any comments as to how the R would compare to my car? the 435 understeers a bit more than I like. When I drive it at about 70% of it's capacity, it is lovely. Is the Golf R like that too? Great job man.

    @TheGetawayer Really nice editing on this one. The review is great as well, I just got a GTI with the PP, I just wish the gears wear shorter like in the R. By the way how do you compare both? I found heel and toe in the VWs a bit tricky (small accelerator pedal) in comparison with BMW for example... But all the rest is amazing, specially the engine and gearbox :)

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kees Zoutzeling Thanks ! I liked both cars alot. Prefered the R's chassis being awd and just even more capable on a wet twisty road. From my experience in the Seat Leon Cupra with 280hp to the front wheels, there's just a limit of traction which the R doesn't struggle with at all. The pedals are the same in all VW group cars these days, I already talked about them in my Audi S3 review way back in 2014 :) I have big feet so I'm fine, but I know what you mean. BMW and Porsche have the best pedals for my taste, too bad VW ditched the standing gas pedal. I guess they did so for safety reasons and moved the brake pedal more to the left for that reason, just so it gets harder to hit the wrong pedal ;)

    Long overdue - excellent review of the manual. I just got a manual R in black, and everything you said is true. One car to do it all. How do you feel about the engine / exhaust sound & the soundaktor? I think VW did the best they could with the turbo 4.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +azsori Thanks ! I think they've done a fine job. I really like the sound inside, it's almost abit like a fivecylinder induction tone. Could be abit louder from the outside to me. The GTI PP with DSG did these lovely pops on upshifts, which I guess the R with DSG does too, but it seemed abit louder to me. Still a decent noise which never got annoying :)

      I'm not a big fan of the new RS. Check out what Dan Prosser from EVO says about it in their latest Car of the Year video. That's 100% what I feel about it. I hate the high seating postion, weird ergonomics, the engine doesn't feel as strong as I expected, the ride is bad unless you drive the RS really hard and the drift mode doesn't do much for me on the road. Hey Guido, tolles Review. Ich suche aktuell nach einem neuen Daily Driver. Fahre aktuell ein W205 C250 Bluetec suche aber etwas mit mehr Charakter, mehr Sound, mehr PS aber auch für schlechte Tage ein Auto mit Fahrassistenz / am liebsten Autopilot.
    Denke an einen C450 mit Fahrassistenz Paket jedoch abgesehen vom Anschaffungspreis erscheint der Wagen etwas zu langeweilig. C63 ist etwas out of Scope und naja - so schnell fahre ich dann doch nie. Fahrleistung 25000 bis 30000. Verbrauch egal.

    Awesome i have been waiting for you to review the Golf R. I have a SEAT Leon Cupra 290 on order. £7k cheaper than the Golf R. I have not driven the Golf R - how do they compare Guido?

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +highjumpking Thank you ! Well, I should drive the Cupra 290 in a few weeks, just been offered one for another test haha. I love the Cupra, it's such a good car. I would say it struggles abit to put the power down compared to the R, which has to be expected of course given that it's awd vs fwd. In the wet the Cupra stuggled more with traction than with grip. I had wheelspin up to 3rd gear and over 100 km'h. Not dangerrous at all, but that's the thing where it loses against the R...The Golf R also has slightly better suspension too, better dampening, but there's not much in it. It's really traction and the nicer cabin that justify the Golf R's higher price for me, but that said I still prefer the Curpa over the GTI and any other fwd car. You will love it ! DSG or Manual ? :) - Guido

    • @highjumpking
      @highjumpking 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheGetawayer I ordered DSG. Thanks for the insight Guido!. For me i cannot justify AWD and a nicer interior for £7k so i will stick with the Cupra. I have also been told that wheelspin dramatically reduces if the cupra is fitted with good tyres unlike the rubbish Bridgestones that comes with the car. Apparently the 290 comes with better (continental) tyres so i look forward to you making a video of the cupra 290 reviewing any changes compared with the 280. Thanks!

    Hi Guido. I watched your GTI video again and I have a question. Considering performance, steering, driving feel, and ride comfort, would you choose the GTI with the manual gearbox or the R with the manual gearbox? Thanks a lot.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff Puha I prefer the R, because it just feels more capable being awd and just has an even better chassis for spirited driving. Power wasn't feeling that much bigger to be honest, they both make similiar torque. The steering is abit better in the R, but not by much. The ride was almost the same too, but harder for me to judge since the GTI had summer tires and the R winter tires.

  • @germi1
    @germi1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried the Golf R with manual transmission after watching your review and I was very surprised with the transmission. The clutch is light and unnecessary long and the gearbox is as well very light and the reach on 3rd and 5th are a full stretch arm away, making it to far (if you have long legs). It doesn’t feel at all like a sports car should feel. The direction is as well a bit too light but I could forgive it. Compared to my Mini you get a much sportier feeling from transmission and direction as well as a feeling of a higher quality product. Trust me, it kills me to acknowledge this since I want to sell the Mini and buy the Golf R... I was honestly super disappointed since I was ready to buy it. I’ll try one with a DSG today maybe I like it and I finally buy the Golf R!

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Le Germain Coming from a Mini I'm not surprised you feel this way. But even BMW/Mini manuals feel very light and rubbery these days, its hard to find something that feels mechanical. The new 7spd DSG is the better choice these days for a daily. I still like working a manual and VWs ones are still amoung the best as far as new cars go

      @TheGetawayer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FLammenCraft Really ? Who ? You know what I like them all, but the R has more expensive feeling suspension and just has the advantage of awd. The GTI is a great car, especially with the Performance Pack like I tested it last year. I can't even say that the R feels alot faster to me, because GTI has great torque low down. I still was more confident in the R. It feels sportier to me...The Cupra does struggle abit to put the power to the ground. On a wet road in 3rd at over 100 km'h I still had wheelspin. But the chassis is lovely and I like the styling too. I will actually test the Cupra 290 here soon, because Seat offered me one. Maybe I will come back with some new impressions then, but right now...The Golf R is my favourite :)

    Hi Guido, nice review, i ordered a gti clubsport manual. But im still hesitating to take a DSG... Because now i have a scirocco R. I drive it on the nurburgring and sometimes i miss the "envolvment" or how to call it. Otherwise the DSG is a nice auto. What do you think? Will you do a review about this car?

      I did drive a Clubsport for the german magazine Auto Bild Sportscars ( video is on their channel but not subtitled yet ). I did like the manual, despite the fact that the Clubsport feels abit slower than the Cupra 290 and Golf R. Laptimes for the magazine test suggested the same, the Cupra was quite abit faster ( also a manual ). I would go for the manual. They are easy to shift so no problems on traffic that would justify the DSG for me :) Let me know how you like it when it arrives ! - Guido

    What a machine, and an affordable one too! I've got some great roads near me that would put a similar smile on my face as yours. If you were driving it to work, you'd just drive past the front door. Is it crazy of me to suggest a station wagon version? ? Oh and by the way this one's a lovely colour too. Thanks always for the great video.

      +John Webster Thanks John ! I heard great things about the wagon and it would be an even better sleeper :)

    Bravo on the video. It's the most poignant and articulate car video I've seen yet. I am most appreciative of the work done on the editing.
    I have the 2016 .:R Manual. I waited a year, and bypassed the DSG. I support all of your points, and agree with your driving assessment. But I have one annoying question. The Golf R's that were deliver to the US, do not have a performance monitor. Ironically, the monitor is available in the 2016 GTI with the performance pack - not the R! Is that the case as well in Germany???
    And thanks again. Keep them coming.

      +jm sma Thanks ! Really great to hear your feedback as an owner. I didn't evenm try the performance monitor if I'm honest and don't know much about it. My bad. - Guido

    Thank you for Great Reviews.Can anybody share opinion/experience on DCC vs non-DCC option? Is the DCC option worth it since the base car already came with 3 modes (Normal, Race and Individual)?

      +For Li Thanks ! Well I only drove this car with the DCC and really liked it as a good feature. I guess the standard car would be fine too
