This song, which has been sung so beautifully, is about not being accepted for who you are and being painfully rejected by the closest people in your life. Love this song❤
Looking back at it now it seems quite brave to include a song with such a taboo topic at such a time (we're still in the 80s) on a mainstream album. The message is not too clear, but it's obvious to anyone listening. We only had Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" to cling to before. Too bad I didn't get to listen to this song until 94. Still it warms my heart thinking about all the young people who are struggling to come to terms with their feelings and what friends and family expects them to be like. There's a remix of this song on the compilation/remix/live album THE TWO RING CIRCUS (1987) by Little Louie Vega that has a bit more punch to it, which makes it even better (IMO).
Indeed, well said and the comment warms my heart. I think a lot of people find refuge and inspiration in music, and that can take so many different forms. Thanks again for sharing, your comments are a joy. :)
Of all their songs which weren't chosen as a single, this is probably the one that would have deserved it the most. Not just because it's real good, but the lyrics are so important and if this had been high up in the charts it could've been quite impactful for even more people.

The Two Ring Circus album has an incredible remixes of Leave Me to Bleed, Don't Dance and Hideaway
You nailed it again. It's about him coming out, then realizing it's nothing to be ashamed of and the shame is with those who judge.

Anthem❤
This song is not about, Andy. I read it was about a song by small town boy by Bronski Beat.
Girl! It's about being gay!
Oh indeed, as the song unfolded, that became quite evident. Makes sense this is a favorite for a lot of fans!
