What is the most accurate way to test your blood sugar level? Here’s what you need to know!

6:04 The best method to determine your blood sugar level
In this video, I want to talk about the most accurate method to determine your blood sugar levels.
A1C is not as accurate at blood glucose. Why? Because it does not measure your blood glucose levels directly. It only gives you a rough estimate of your blood glucose levels over three months. This is done by measuring the hemoglobin that is bound to glucose.
If you have anemia, your A1C test will be thrown off. Infections, kidney disease, liver disease, pregnancy, and numerous other factors can throw off your A1C measurements.
A1C tests will give you more of a general estimate, but they aren’t 100% accurate.
A normal blood sugar level will be around 80 mg/dl. If you’re a diabetic, you will have insulin resistance. This greatly affects blood sugar levels. Over time, keto and intermittent fasting can bring your blood glucose within a normal range (70-90 mg/dl).
You always want to consume healthy, nutrient-dense foods-particularly vegetables. This will help keep your blood sugar levels under control.
The best way to determine your blood sugar levels is to do a post-meal glucose blood test. After 1-2 hours, your blood sugar level should be under 120. Very healthy people will be under 100.

As of today, I am no longer on meds for blood pressure or diabetes, I am down 135 lbs, and A1C of 5.3! I was so depressed that I didn’t take before pictures. I can’t find a way to add photos. Thank you for your help in making this possible. I have given up TV for college degree on TH-cam. I have 48 lbs to go and I am taking Ben Azadi’s advice and doing 5-1-1 schedule. God Bless!

I totally get that. I was not taking pictures of myself all throughout my 30s. I hated the way that I looked and I was 5 foot 2 and 207 pounds and my highest was 215 pounds and size 18. When 5 foot 2, I only need to be 130 or 125 pounds. At 150 I can feel it in my hips and knees. I'm about 145 now. I'm a size 8, I was a 16 for a long time. I got to 127 in Aug 2019 (size 6) and then Nov 2019 hit and I gained some. Then I gained TONS in 2020. We all did. Now I'm back to 145 down from 160. I can't believe I was up to 160 in Sep 2020. My hips were in so much pain. I take MANY pictures of myself now. I love the way I look. Ah maz ing.

One thing that is never addressed is age. What a active person in there 20's should be versus what a sedentary senior should be are 2 different things! The Geriatric society states normal blood sugar A1C should be between 7 + 7.5 Try telling that to a doctor who thinks everyone should have a A1C below 5.6! The numbers are also higher for blood pressure + BMI too.
I will not call them a doctor when they lump everyone together!

I simply became aware of sugar consumption and try to keep it down to ~30 gm max per day (so no soda, for example.) Sometimes that's all it takes - awareness. HbA1c (which we agree is not perfect, but still pretty good indicator) went from 5.8 to 5.1 in a few months. So these videos may help people with higher levels, they can also turn those of us on the borderline around and headed in the right direction.

Thanks for the info, Dr.Berg. I was pre-diabetic and mentioned to my podiatrist the wound on one of my toes which was a friction burn from my winter shoes. I then noticed the following month a similar wound on the similar toe but on the other foot. I then noticed a further red patch on the outer edge of the ball of my foot. I'm off to see the nurse on Wednesday and will ask her how my feet are doing as I have been doing keto for 6 or 7 weeks and there is no longer any itching (which was driving me nuts at night) and the wounds seem to be healing too. I'm convinced it's the keto diet. :)

Great channel, Dr. Berg, thank you for providing helpful information!
With diet (similar to keto), regular/daily intermittent fasting and exercise, I have lost 80lbs and totally reversed my Type 2 Diabetes.
I was diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension and acid reflux in 2006 and was prescribed 4 medications, and then started insulin in 2010. But around summer of 2017, I decided to put the information on your, and others, channel to use. And over a year ago my doctor gradually took me off all medications. Today I'm not on any medications. My blood sugars range from 72 to 88, my blood pressure 110/72.
I'm an American living in the Philippines so my biggest challenge is getting enough vegetables. All vegetables are seasonal here and broccoli is almost $3/lb! But these are minor challenges! Thanks again!!

I saw a great TEDTalk (link escapes me) that explained that we could use the blood sugar testing of 1-2 hours after the meal to detect the foods that we (personally) should be avoiding and/or should be consuming. The reactive (bad for me) foods would spike blood sugar more, and non reactive (good for me) would not spike the blood sugar that much. This will help us build a perfect meal plan that is good and healthy for us! Remember we are all different and some things good for one person are bad for someone else.

You have to test just before eating to know if numbers after eating are good or not. At 1 hour after you see how much your sugars rose, at 2 hours they should be coming back down. But you have to know your before food numbers to understand your after food numbers.

HbA1c is absolutely critical when assessing blood glucose over time. The HbA1c is used for diagnostic purposes where an isolated BS level can’t. The HbA1c is a great measurement for those on a keto diet who’d track the progress of moving away from metabolic syndrome.

You've mentioned benfotiamine in the past for the neuropathy and retinopathy. After three or four quarterly extended fasts separated by healthy keto practices, I decided to try this, and eventually added magnesium threonate. I rarely, if ever, feel anything resembling neuropathy. The one caveat is that I began feeling the retinopathy after being diagnosed diabetic (A1c 7.2) and was already reversing my diabetes. The major point, though, is that it worked for me, and that IMO, diabetics should try it and keto, and not give up hope. I think I had some neuropathy for about a year.
I did take your diabetic support for about 90 days, but I don't know what role it may have played. Other things that may have played a role are cinnamon (tablets and in my black tea), astaxanthin, ACV, and lemon juice in my water. I'd be skeptical of those, though, WRT neuropathy.
As for retinopathy, I'm sure the stuff in the first paragraph helped, but really what most worried my doctor was the ischemia, which was brought down with blood pressure medication, of which I new take the smallest dose of Lisinopril (5mg.) I'm off and on it, hoping to be completely off it if I lose more weight, because I estimate that's a factor.
_Interestingly enough, nobody ever mentioned the possibility of prediabetes until I was later diagnosed._ That probably cost me a lot of beta cells and more trouble than I would have had if I'd been diagnosed when I had my "hypertensive crisis." On the flip side, I did see a lot of specialists for my feet, eyes, kidneys, etc. While that should have provided clues that I was diabetic but not "technically," it really just ran up a lot of bills and led to inadequate treatments. In fact, I serendipitously discovered what helped me most before keto: magnesium. The doctors, who again, should have alerted me, did not. I feel this is particularly true of the neurologist, but also the nephrologist.
Bottom line: There are were many symptoms that I know now are classic symptoms of hyperinsulinemia (basically, diabetes) and they began so early, first with hypertension and chronic spinal pain, that the state of medicine in regard to diet is truly shameful. Pretty much every doctor I saw, which was in excess of a dozen in total, had an opportunity to alert me to the possibility, and I was never tested for hyperinsulinemia AFTER my A1c was officially "diabetic"-and that was a test I ordered, having become informed by you and Dr Fung, Dr Berg.

Just had appointment with new endocrinologist. I have been a type 1 diabetic for 8 years, adult onset. Have had a pump for about 5 years. I eat a ketogenic diet as much as possible and intermittent fast daily. My functional doctor shared this endocrinologist’s report with me today. The nurse wrote things that were not true, taken out of context, even some made up. Said I fasted and only ate when I was hungry. True. Then she said I didn’t eat 3 meals a day as my doctor had suggested. No one has ever suggested this to me and if they did, I wouldn’t follow it. They wanted me to change my pump settings and wanted me to call them for every blood sugar reading under 80. I feel great in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and have a 4.9 A1C, average of 94. The settings they wanted on my pump would put me back to A1C over 6. I told them I want to stay under 6 as studies have shown 5% brain shrinkage per year with those carrying higher A1Cs. They thought I didn’t take my diabetes seriously - they are so wrong. It is a daily battle and I wish there were more choices in my area for endocrinologists who don’t endorse SAD, eating 3-5 meals a day, and happy with ADA recommendations for T1D to carry A1C’s around 7. I won’t be going back and thankfully my functional doctor will order my needed bloodwork and write the scripts for insulin and test strips. Next will be to get a continuous glucose monitor and i think this will help with hypoglycemia- as every day in a T1D life is different. What maintained ( diet/exercise) blood sugar in the 80s and 90s one day can result in low blood sugar the next - doing exactly the same thing. It is like balancing a yo yo 🤣

Glad you finally mentioned, in this video, how in some circumstances the loss of Beta cells of the Pancreas might be causing some issues. I have posted this fact on several TH-camr videos when it comes to T2D glucose levels. This can become more problematic in trying to control blood glucose levels. Supposedly there are tests that show how high glucose levels can actually destroy those Beta cells. If ones Insulin Resistance is singly responsible for Diabetes then you do stand a chance of truly reversing(curing?) however if loss of Beta cells, which causes lower insulin production, is also contributing then fully reversing Diabetes(Type 2) can only be achieved by a controlled diet. This is where actual insulin levels should be measured using tests to help determine. C-peptide, etc
2 weeks ago I was seeing fasting blood glucose levels in the 70s-80s with the occasional 60's, which I was quite happy to see. I'm T2D since 2011 btw. For the last several days however mine are back up in the 90's and I'm trying to figure out why. Keto diet and fully fat adapted at this point. Verified using Keto-Mojo for Ketone levels. I use a different meter for blood glucose however.
    Love your videos.

      @Dharmicaction 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Type 2 diabetes is NOT a chronic and progressive condition. Reason - there are 2 theories out there. Dr berg here talked about one theory - that is "destruction of beta cells" which looks as if the damage is not reversible. So, the main stream medical science is more than happy to embrace this theory since it advocates no cure.
But there is another well validated theory (clinically proven by Dr jason fung) - that is ectopic fat theory (not just abdominal fat because some obese people may not have diabetes but skinny people do). Ectopic fat targets our organs (especially pancreas which blocks the insulin release NOT due to destruction of beta cells). 36 hrs fasting reverses fatty liver and 72 to 105 hrs fasting/week for 2 to 6 months gets rid of the ectopic fat which accumulated in pancreas. Combine fasting with keto, otherwise it is a waste of time. The second theory advocates cure. The definition of cure is even if you eat a big high carb meal eg mashed potato, your post meal blood sugar should be between 80 to 100. But consuming excess refined carbs (polished rice, bread, pasta, cereals, sugary drinks) can create ectopic fat again. So, the logic is eat unrefined carbs, moderate protein and fat to sustain the cure

🤔 Damn Dr Berg, I don’t know how exactly you knew I needed this very video. I just got me a “Keto Mojo” Meter for blood monitoring of Ketones and curiously for blood sugar monitoring. As I’ve heard you say before in a video that monitoring actual blood for Ketones is more accurate than the strips. Got it and it’s fast and accurate measurements. I’m just doing One Meal A Day with only Coffee & some Half-Half Cream and Lakanto Monk fruit for sweetener, plus water. Plus was a bit curious if the Lakanto Monk fruit sweetener was also affecting my Ketones and blood sugar also when just having coffee during the day also. Anyway monitoring my Ketones over about 5 days the highest for Blood Ketones was 0.8. Checked my glucose once after 1 meal it was 0.4 for Ketones and 150 for Blood Glucose to which I had no idea if that was really high or how high for Glucose or what is suppose to even be 2-3 hours after normal meal. I fasted overnight to next day mid morning and checking my Blood Glucose it had come down to 90. I find the actual Blood Testing quite helpful in my minds eye for accuracy more so than the strip dip test, as well the test is easy to do once you know how it all works. But what I find helpful in this very timely video is you not just telling us to reduce blood sugar, but telling and educating us what ballpark is the blood sugar suppose to be, where is high, where to avoid it being etc. For Ketones I have a really nice spiral chart from Keto Mojo website that shows good Ketones ballpark on the wheel chart for helpfulness and awareness of where you are and where you could be for really good Ketones, just no chart for Glucose I could find. But based on this video, I had no idea after a meal which was seemingly moderate and nothing heavy on carbs that my blood sugar was even spiking that high on my one meal for that day. Thus I find this video extremely helpful as well very timely. Thinking as well of going on a few days Water fast for 3-5 days then switching back to one meal a day and consciously monitoring that one meal even more. Still on another note though, I’m a bit 🤔 curious if that Lakanto Monkfruit is or isn’t affecting my blood sugar during the day in any way when I’m fasting as I’m only eating dinner for my one meal a day and that’s the only kind of sweetener I’m using.

You know, sometimes when I fast for 23 hours, I get a high reading in 120's (When I started measuring, woke up the first day and found it 300), because liver is pushing glycogen into blood stream in the form of glucose. Well, if you allow me I would like to explain something.
First of all, hba1C is a very good indicator if the person has no issues with b12 or iron or any related to RBCs.
Second, FBS is not usually 80, the normal range is 70-110, so any number between this is normal, every body is unique, not all humans are same.
Third, I agree with you on post meal sugar, but I disagree on the numbers, it's up to 140, not 120.
Seen that you talk about insulin resistance, there is a specific test for it and excellent indicator which is triglycerides and the ratio with HDL. When the ratio is high, it means insulin resistance.
I really like your topics, keep going

Well, as researchs say, post meal is best way to know your status regarding diabetes or pre diabetes, because it gives you an idea how your sugar spikes and insulin working together and how your cells accepting this.
Regarding the normal values, post meal should be taken between 1-2 hours after meal and should be up to 140mg.
I think your blood sugar is under control, intermittent fasting and sport will improve your status.
You can monitor with hba1C as long as no other conditions could interact with the results such as b12 or iron deficiency.
Triglycerides and HDL ratio will show insulin resistance too by divide the TG ON hdl.

January 13th I was admitted to the hospital with 1400 glucose levels. Good thing my wife and kids knew I was going in and out of a sugar coma. After 3 days in ICU and 10 days total in the hospital I was sent home. Although my vision is still somewhat off (doc says that should normalize in most cases" my premeal sugar has been between 91 and 114, I dropped 30 pounds (and keeping it off) and my BP is down to ~ 125/75 (from 190 /82). Docs in the hospital communicated I am lucky to be alive...I am know taking control of my health and diet.

Now on keto I am consistently below 110 one to two hours after a meal and mostly below 100 two hours after. My biggest problem is my fasting glucose, in the morning, goes up a bit, never really as high as 120 but often above 110. I do still take metformin but with my first meal at lunchtime and it is a very small extended release dose. Been Keto since October and lost over 25lbs.

Doc Berg, I have lots of autoimmune issues, so I'm doing Lion carnivore and just finally broke 100 (98 fasting blood glucose reading) today for the first time since starting 22 weeks ago. My BS initially went up and stayed up until now when I converted from the strict vegan plan I had been on for 5 years to carnivore. I'm excited to learn about checking my post meal blood sugars for better accuracy, so I thank you for presenting it!
