Its easy and you will get a lot of enjoyment from both making it and watching the plants grow..One year we had a sparrow start making a nest in one...But never did finish..Good Luck with your project..

Duck uses a third of the tools in the garage.... makes a planter. So nice! Beaver walks in .... makes four cuts with a chainsaw, a dozen cuts with a hatchet or adz.... all done. Easy. Moral of the story: Beavers know how to build.
Hi Ken, Approximately how long did it take to do both planters? My husband cut a tree down last fall maybe slightly wider than your logs. He plopped a 10-12’ trunk section in the front border of our rhododendrons right over the row of daffodils I had just planted before he cut the tree down. Some of the daffodils didn’t come up but others have made their way up around the log and turned out naturally pretty. I would love to make that log a whole long planter and plant a bunch of muscari…I have old rail wood beams all across my front yard that had lots of splits and gaps that I filled with soil and planted muscari all the way down 6 years ago. I get more comments from the walker on those and I did dig the bulbs and divided them in splotches between the candytuft which is beautiful blue and white all the way down! Thank you for your inspiration.
YES...I did notice the joints were not that tight and would let water drain..I should have made mention of that in the video. Thanks for noticing that!

I've seen log planters that look like a train, but no instructions. Using a chain or circular saw is a little unrealistic for us. My daughter and I are thinking about splitting the log lengthways with a wedge. Then make a square box from free pallet wood. Then place the flat side of each log on either side of the box and slices of log for the wheels. I found pictures of trains made with planters like you did, but no instructions for the train, let alone what I have in mind. I hope you make a video of such a train.
