Just watched the first 5 minutes and I must say that there's one thing I love about your video that I wish I'd see on every other TH-cam videos: You post close-up pictures of stuff you're using so you don't have to pause or wait for the auto focus to be able to read the products name (and it could be useful for non-native English).
I can see how excited you are while building this beautiful guitar... Wonderful build and nice ingenious idea 👌. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and waiting for the next part. CONGRATS

Usually with these "build a guitar with limited tools" or what-have-you the person ends up bringing out belt sanders or some $500 file etc. This is theb1st time where watching a build I actually had everything and thought "could do this easy." Thx for a great vid!
That’s a quality kit. Love the grain and to spray a color over it would have been just short of criminal. Great balance between meticulous work and cracking on. Love the improvisation with the peppermill. At this point, you need to find an inlay guy and put ‘D’Paul’ in cursive MOP on the headstock. Cheers!

Love verathane stains. They work so well with minimal coats and mess. Just gotta know how to apply them without causing swirls and streaks. Pretty easy and great stuff.
Great job Derek! I'm going to be doing a Deluxe Tele with an Ash body, and am watching all these "finish" vids I can. That Varathane Early American looks like just what I'm after, or very close. Minwax also has a honey oak that might be the ticket, will have to sample them in the cavity or neck pocket to decide. Going to watch your next vid now, have to see how it turned out!

Thanks! Just scored a B+ second from Solo for $114. The veneer is a bit messed up, but this is my first build, so I am prepared to accept what I get. I can try finishing the spalted veneer and if it doesn't work out I can shoot is solid after.
Hi Derek, props to you mate, this vid is not only a damn good record of your work achievement but provides excellent instructional material too. The only bit I'd blanche at now, based on history is taking a coping saw to the headstock as per your tele vid, my previous attempt at reshaping my OLP version turned into an abortion. Luckily enough, I know a friendly retired carpenter who resolved the problem in 10 mins. flat........ well that and 10 mins of rolling eyes and head shaking LOL Now I'm off to Part 2. This furlough is a blessing!

Don’t know if we can get this exact kit in the U.K but I’ve found one online for £200 so may give it a go. Have you thought of doing a video on how to skin a guitar with vinyl? I’m planning to put a Union Jack vinyl skin on my Gibson Les Paul studio. It used to be wine red-until the ex-wife poured nail varnish remover over it! 🙁
I think a lot of the kits are generic (aside from the Crimson guitars ones) so you can't really go wrong, i havent thought of doing it, i'd mess that up for sure lol, but go for it i say! cheers
What are you using for sand paper or block in between poly coats? I worry about scratching but I guess with light any small scratches gets filled with the next coat of poly right? Also links to the other pts?
Is it necessary to veneer the spalted maple? I picked up a slab of Minnesota spalted maple yesterday. Was going to turn it into a conference table, but I’m looking at it as having the potential of at least 3 guitar bodies. I build tables, cabinets, counter tops, etc., but never a guitar...this slab is beautiful so I’m up in the air. Build a 20k table or mess around with building some guitar bodies.
Michael - forgive me if I am saying something you already know, but generally a Les Paul is built with a mahogany body topped with a maple cap, about 1/2 inch thick. Veneers are normally only used on cheaper kits, although some people do add them to own builds - a difficult process. If you use a spalted cap, you may have to stabilise the wood first using super/crazy glue, wood hardener, or epoxy. You certainly shouldn’t use spalted maple for the whole body. There are very many useful build threads on the net - check out “luthier’s corner” of the “My Les Paul” forum.
@@paulosprague2180 thanks for the info. This would be my first attempt at a guitar build so any info is appreciated. I was working with some spalted white oak the other day and realized what a difference the fungus creates in the wood density. I’ll check out your recommended content.
You should NEVER put stain on any surface that is to be glued !!!! It adds a barrier between the wood and the glue and your glue joint is now substantially weakened. BIG MISTAKE !! You should have also shaped the headstock a little instead of leaving it squared off at the top.
@@DerekPaulGuitar I think he means the part where you stained the neck tenon. I thought the same as Ross Tipps, to be honest. I've never seen or read anyone not taping it off to prevent staining.

Let’s not be misleading. The tuners and hardware are not good. Nor are they decent quality either. They’re low tier Chinese rubbish. The only things you’re actually buying is the wood.

Nope, no stain or clear coat went into the neck pocket as i wanted a solid wood to wood joint
