Hello Pastor Mat. Very descriptive video. Im Mexican and very proud and grateful for having been baptized in the Presbyterian faith. I come from a Catholic family, but i never liked what surrounded that faith. So I started attending Presbyterian churches in Mexico and after some services i decided i liked the way God was worshipped and that i felt closer to God than in all my 20 years of being Catholic. I am non denomination. Me and my family study the kjv very hard. I do not go to church I only study and learn the Bible. I suppose in a way Presbyterian?
So what’s the difference between a Presbyterian and a Free-Presbyterian Church? I ask this because I am Catholic, and looking from the outside it seems confusing.....isn’t Christ.....Christ, or are we chopping up parts of the body?
I in no way am saying we should not read and use Scripture as a guide, but how can the Bible be our only source when the Early Church never had a Bible for at least three hundred years? They somehow managed to stay on course without a canonization scripture. If that's all it takes, why do we have so many different denominations ?
I realize this is a very old video, but I am looking for opinions on this as a new Christian. Is it okay to choose a church/denomination like you'd choose a political candidate to vote for? In other words, is it okay to choose a church that MOSTLY aligns with your own system of beliefs, or does it need to be an exact fit? For me, Methodism is like that. Methodism fits me nicely, but there are a couple (small-to-me) things that I'm just a little "meh" about.
It's not about your opinion, but the Lord's. Get to know your bible, if it seems daunting I recommend the Gospel of John and Romans. Know those books well and choose a church that aligns best with them. Continue reading the Bible complete. Of all the reasons to read the bible, one that nobody mentions is 'don't trust the pastor'. If you're in a church and the pastor preaches anything that's not biblical, you're in the wrong church. You can only know if he's biblical if you read the bible. Don't get me wrong, a good pastor will point out lot's of great knowledge about passages in the bible that you wouldn't have known otherwise, that's their full time job. When you know your scriptures, he can show something totally new and your discernment will tell if he's within biblical doctrine. If you sense otherwise, aproach and ask him about it and give him the benefit of the doubt, don't be a jerk. I realize this reply is a couple months after you asked your question. I hope you haven't been disheartened and hope you find a good church.
“Pray to icons” if this is about Catholicism that’s not true. They do pray and have some icons like Mary and Joseph near them, but they’re not worshiping the statue or Jesus/Mary. They only worship God. I love the video though and the explanation.
Great video. I'm a 1689 baptist at the moment but might become a Presbyterian someday if I feel the natural result of covenant theology is seeing things the way presbys do. Hasn't happened yet ;)
I suppose that depends on how you define conservative. I think of it as a continuum with more conservative on the right (OPC, PCA, RPCNA), some in the middle (EPC, ECO), and some very liberal, progressive groups on the left which have departed from the basic foundations of presbyterianism altogether, i.e. the PCUSA. For my part, I am ordained by the EPC. But even so, we have a continuum of right to left among our own churches, and I am on the right, conservative, confessional, historically reformed side of that continuum.
I’m a Christian but I’m not a cheerleader for denominationalism. Having said that, I’m certain my Ulster Scots ancestors were Presbyterians, and probably signed their confessions of faith with their own blood. Powerful stuff. ✝️ 🏴
Hi, I’m a Presbyterian in membership with the FCC (Free Church of Scotland Continuing). You mentioned that the singing of doxologies is sanctioned in Scripture. What is your support for that? I am one of those you maybe consider to be on the far right, who holds to the 1646-7 WCF without any scruples, and to the practice of exclusive psalmody as the consistent consequence of practicing the RPW.
swhumby briefly, Revelation 5. But I believe we can sing all of Scripture. Blessings! By the way, we love singing Psalms and honor the Scottish tradition of psalm singing. We are just not exclusive on this point.
Hello & Respect to All. First, i would like to share, 1 Cor 1:10-13, the, 14-17, I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? Now, what is the point? I believe, Paul is preaching with Corinth Christians problem; the divisions within the Church itself simply because of loyalty (spiritual immaturity). And this author Paul, is into the rescue of Corinth's beliefs to draw them back into the teaching (sound doctrine) of CHRIST and not of anyone else that can not save spiritually (now, it can be denominational / group and even affiliation). That is why Paul stating (in apologetic approach) in V v.14-17, as his defense for that arguments to be stopped. In doing so, all of us will be more matured with the teaching of Christ as being united with Him through the Cross. To LOVE-ONE-ANOTHER. And so, to the author of this page, for Mat, I appreciate your point of view as individual and as follower of Christ, but I disagree with your claim of being part of your said group that I believe (and you’ll agree with me), NO affiliation can saves even one soul, it is ONLY through CHRIST the LORD. I am just concerns with the other readers and their comments. As I observe, maybe because of being human, as with biases in life, it can also be our problem now a days as experienced of Corinth Christians before. You can also see and observe the responses of those particulars. The question is, How ca we be able to avoid the problem, like the 55 AD., with Corinth Church? What I can suggest is; * to promote CHRIST and His Doctrine + Application with our life, simply to claim that we are one among the “Christians” as Student or Follower of Christ, who is willing to RESTORE the teaching of the BIBLE and not only to react with those reformist, protestantism and so others 11th - 16th century's Church Leader. In doing so, we can avoid any schisms and we will be more matured and united with CHRIST and to His Love. * also, instead of mentioning of, to continue in “Christian’s Tradition,” we can plainly say to continue with “Christian’s Faith or Doctrine” written in the Bible. Consider this as constructive criticism from the younger minister. Thanks Man!
Pastor Matt, have you by chance ever actually looked into the catholic faith? Unbiasely? Look into the early church, and early Christians. You'll be surprised.
Well he's a very sincere man and obviously I'm not a Presbyterian. I listen to it and come to the conclusion Men are not looking for a religion or a church they're looking for the truth on getting right with God, making peace with their Maker, finding forgiveness of sins. He didn't give any word to look to Christ for salvation or to be born again which is the same thing. The problem with Presbyterians think is their Calvinists and since they are embracing this false doctrine of predestination they don't care about soul winning. They don't care about preaching the gospel. They don't care about spreading the words of life that men might be saved. They're real big on their religion and boast about the Bible but of course they will point you to other books that will pervert your thinking. "Ye shall know them by their fruits" Is the warning of the Lord Jesus Christ to examine the doctrines of those who profess to know God, and the doctrines that this religion professes is a killer of churches and is a killer of Christians who are spreading the gospel. That's not good news That's bad news. "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world"
Sorry Brother but you are just wrong. In every point with which you accuse Presbyterians. The accusations are so severe, I cannot let them pass by. Repent on the spot. You are falsely accusing faithful brethren. Please, do not ever again utter these lies about presbys ever again. Repent.
@@paulthomasson4832 My friend my point is well served If you are defending a religion - you saying every Presbyterian church is fantastic, The denomination is the answer what what is your point here. I have experienced dealing with those who go to these churches and there doctrines are just as I said. Whether or not some of them on my brothers and sisters in Christ I know not But I do remember listening to this video that a religion was exalted and books outside the Bible were encouraged. No word at all to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" On public airways where any lost soul could wander in. That's a warning to everyone!
@@douglascrosby5100 Again you say that I think that every presby church is fantastic (which I didn't say). Lie Number 1. Idk but do you think Matthew Everhard doesn't care about souls getting lost? There are a ton of liberal presby churches. No wonder you would get a bad Impression. I still think that you are not really interested in hearing about reformed beliefs. Because if you want to stay consistent, von have to say that the Puritans were all that of which you accused them. Jonathan Edwards, John Owen, Thomas Watson and literally every other Puritan apart from 1689ers.
@@paulthomasson4832 there is no attempt for me to deceive anyone which would be a lie, no I don't care about pure and beliefs or the list of many great preachers of the past I care what "thus saith the Lord" No souls are getting lost that they're already lost and need to be saved I don't understand your terminology is not biblical. I am consistent on my point whether this is a conservative approach from the Presbyterians or liberal it's indifferent to me the idea is a perversion corruption of biblical doctrine on the salvation of souls which is hindered many in history but this predestination elect madness. That definitely hinges soul winning by individuals publicly and from house to house, It definitely hinders the missionary work in evangelistic work of local churches, If you are true believer, and have come to Christ for mercy as a sinner then obey the word of God! "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature"
Question: if you look to scripture alone (Sola Scriptura) as the sole authority, where in the bible does it state specifically "only" through scripture? Truly curious.
I love Jesus and Methodist Church, and the Holy rules for live from the ministry of Methodist, but I love Presbyterian Church and all the body of Jesus
Pastor @@MatthewEverhard I am also a Presbyterian. English language is not my mother tongue. Therefore I find it hard to translate (to English) any liturgical system like services, small congregations, large congregations etc. of the Presbyterians. I actually know in my language but I can't tell it (them) in English because I don't know what is that particular thing called in English. So, my humble request to you. As a fellow Presbyterian, could you please tell me (just name) the liturgy and system in the Presbyterian churches in English? Thank you for your time!. . .
I'm surprised that Presbyterians end their prayer with { IN JESUS NAME} Amen. That is really nice. I wonder why so many don't water baptize in the NAME spoken of in ACTS @? Matthew @ says to baptize in the Name of and we see the only Name above all Names is Jesus. It is actually referenced throughout the Book of Acts where they went down into the water and baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. So I studied and prayed about this for years asking GOD to give me HIS Truth on this and only His truth on water baptism. He showed me the Name of Jesus in many references and that Jesus said I am come in my Fathers Name. I knew right then, if Jesus came in the fathers Name, and the Name of the Son is Jesus, and then Matthew @ is telling us to baptized in Jesus Name and that the titles are all the NAME which is Jesus. Acts @, Acts @ Acts @, Acts @, Acts 19:5 Romans 6:3 and JAMES says :Whatsoever you do in Word and in Deed, Do all in the Name of the Lord JESUS. Many many years ago, the Roman Catholic church changed the formula of Water baptism from in Jesus Name to speaking the titles father, son and Holy spirit. I just don't like change they have made. God bless all who pray diligently for revelation truth but above all to grow in Love of Christ Jesus.
Excuse me, pastor, but what verses testify to a covenant of works? ? ? of grace??? You Presbyterians exegete Scripture from the sieve of the Westminster Confession of Faith....thus the community non-denominational , non-Calvinist churches.
The Holy Spirit gives gifts to every believer and accompanies them with signs for those that believe Mark 16:17-20 . This action from Holy Spirit does not cease.
Americans can not explain something without trying to sell a book. Did Christ create so many denomination , or is it the greed of money that separate churches ? Do you have the right to take the money of people based on any verse ?
"...Because it is the most faithful expression of what the Bible teaches." Did Jesus build a Church or a Bible? How do you know you're in the Church that interprets the Bible correctly?
Mary Reed asked an important question in your comment section. She asked what kind of Presbyterian you are. Identifying merely as a Presbyterian gives you no orthodox credibility and risks encouraging a casual web-surfer like me to try out the Presbyterian church down the street. We both know that could be disastrous. There are far more Presbyterian churches that do not believe the Bible to be inspired, inerrant, and authoritative than those who do. Please differentiate. I speak as a graduate from a PC-USA seminary. I am not Presbyterian, but have great appreciation for the way you do church and for the majority of the Westminster Confession. However, there is no doubt that conservative Presbyterian churches accept it as reliable as Scripture even though they would protest to the contrary. I have a copy of the Confession with annotated Scriptural support for each point. Although helpful, it seems more like an apologetic for the reliability of the Confession than the reliability of Holy Scripture. It is, after all, a human document. It must always be remembered that the Reformation was about Sola Scriptura as you said. By the way, the Anabaptists were reformers as well. Reformer did not mean Calvinist and should not mean that today. Sadly, it has come to that further dividing the church.
According to the sacred scriptures the Lord's people were described in various ways such as disciples, holy ones, believers, and Christians, but never as Presbyterians or Baptists. (Acts 6:1; Acts 11:26) If we truly speak as the very words of God, we should identify ourselves as the scriptures identify God's people. (1 Peter 4:11) God is not the author of human names in religion. The Bible is right.
The word, presbyterian, directly from the Greek word in the NT Scriptures, means "elders." Thus, our Churches are distinguished as those who follow the Biblical admonition to have a plurality of elders which lead our congregations (See Acts 14:23, 15:2, 1 Timothy 5:17, Titus 1:7).
This is what I believe. Faith divisions existed when Jesus was alive. There is only one way to heaven which is Jesus. He's the way the life our hope. God bless
I learned recently that there are two Presbyterian denominations in America - PCUSA and PSA. The PCUSA is the one that allows those kinds of wacky stuffs. The PCA, however, is very biblical and conservative.
Do you believe in communion ? And confession? Trinity? IJesus the son of God? Are you part of Protestant? What is the difference between Presbyterian , Baptist, evangelical?
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes Predestination, saved by Grace alone, man has no impact of his salvation, he follows Christ because he loves his Creator not out gratitude for his blessings or in anticipation of reward whether earthly or heavenly. Faith is evidence of the receipt of God's grace and not a reason or cause of it. Once saved always saved. Can a man who believes he is saved do something to condemn himself? No, because in doing so he provides evidence that he never had God's grace and thus was deluded in thinking he was saved. It was known before he was born that he would or would not have God's grace because all is known to God.
The most faithful denomination of the faith once delivered to the saints is the same denomination that delivered it, that is Messianic Jews. As James 2:14-26 says faith being alone is dead. The faith that saves is the one that leads you to the obedience of God's covenant by His grace. Works being alone CANNOT save you (the law was never given to save anyone) as FAITH being alone CANNOT save you either as the Bible says. For sin is the transgression of the law 1 John 3:4. If there's no law, then there's no sin and you would not need grace to begin with. So faith must produce obedience as Malachi 5:4-5 reminds us ("remember" because we were supposed to and we didn't due to traditions of men contrary to God's commandments) to do before Messiah comes at the day of Yehovah.
I was raised as a Baptist but I have grown enormously in the 2 1/2 years I have been a Presbyterian... Thank You Lord for leading me here...

I in no way am saying we should not read and use Scripture as a guide, but how can the Bible be our only source when the Early Church never had a Bible for at least three hundred years? They somehow managed to stay on course without a canonization scripture. If that's all it takes, why do we have so many different denominations ?
Would a person who had a unitarian belief in Jesus fit in a Presbyterian Church
If Unitarian you mean you reject the Trinity then you would not fit in any reformed church nor most Christian churchs
& where do you standing regarding The Holy Spirit, His moving & His gifts. Please, thank you.
As a Baptist, I have never heard that a Presbyterian is just more afraid of drowning😆
Great explanation. Thanks!
Are Presbyterian's baptized?
bless you brother
If do only what the scripture said Bible never say pray to Holy Spirit... You can check if you doubt so..
So are you reformed pres? And if so, what is the difference?
R.C. Sproul is a good indication. Eschatology MATTERS because TRUTH Matters.
Great video. I'm a 1689 baptist at the moment but might become a Presbyterian someday if I feel the natural result of covenant theology is seeing things the way presbys do. Hasn't happened yet ;)
I'm sorta in the same boat. But I'm more "Presbycurious" these days. Is your screen name a ref to the band?
please read the fatal flaw www.amazon.com/Fatal-Flaw-Jeffrey-D-Johnson/dp/0974342610 before doing that
My mother has been the pioneer of the presbiterian church america californian.
What line of Presbyterians are conservative besides the OPC?
I suppose that depends on how you define conservative. I think of it as a continuum with more conservative on the right (OPC, PCA, RPCNA), some in the middle (EPC, ECO), and some very liberal, progressive groups on the left which have departed from the basic foundations of presbyterianism altogether, i.e. the PCUSA. For my part, I am ordained by the EPC. But even so, we have a continuum of right to left among our own churches, and I am on the right, conservative, confessional, historically reformed side of that continuum.
PCA
Love R.C btw.
I’m a Christian but I’m not a cheerleader for denominationalism. Having said that, I’m certain my Ulster Scots ancestors were Presbyterians, and probably signed their confessions of faith with their own blood. Powerful stuff. ✝️ 🏴
Afraid of being drowned!!
Are Presbyterians considered progressive Christians? As in the church approves of gay marriage and abortion etc?
Are Presbyterians cessationists? Do they believe in the gifts of the Spirit being for today?
Okay. I would say Rev.5 is not determinative of what we sing here and now. But glad to hear you are singing Psalms. 🙂
Let no man deceive you
Hello & Respect to All.
First, i would like to share,
1 Cor 1:10-13, the, 14-17,
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.”
13 Is Christ divided?
What I can suggest is;
* to promote CHRIST and His Doctrine + Application with our life, simply to claim that we are one among the “Christians” as Student or Follower of Christ, who is willing to RESTORE the teaching of the BIBLE and not only to react with those reformist, protestantism and so others 11th - 16th century's Church Leader.
Thanks Man!
Titles mean nothing. I grew up in the 60's next to the Presbyterian Church in a town of 500. That preacher preached 100% of every funeral into heaven.
Pastor Matt, have you by chance ever actually looked into the catholic faith? Unbiasely? Look into the early church, and early Christians. You'll be surprised.
im an EPC
Amen awesome 👍
Pet Blessings LOL is that a thing?
Well he's a very sincere man and obviously I'm not a Presbyterian.
I listen to it and come to the conclusion
Men are not looking for a religion or a church they're looking for the truth on getting right with God, making peace with their Maker, finding forgiveness of sins.
"Ye shall know them by their fruits"
Is the warning of the Lord Jesus Christ to examine the doctrines of those who profess to know God, and the doctrines that this religion professes is a killer of churches and is a killer of Christians who are spreading the gospel.
Repent.
@@paulthomasson4832 My friend my point is well served
If you are defending a religion - you saying every Presbyterian church is fantastic,
The denomination is the answer what what is your point here.
I have experienced dealing with those who go to these churches and there doctrines are just as I said.
Whether or not some of them on my brothers and sisters in Christ I know not
But I do remember listening to this video that a religion was exalted and books outside the Bible were encouraged.
No word at all to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved"
On public airways where any lost soul could wander in.
@@paulthomasson4832 there is no attempt for me to deceive anyone which would be a lie, no I don't care about pure and beliefs or the list of many great preachers of the past I care what "thus saith the Lord"
No souls are getting lost that they're already lost and need to be saved I don't understand your terminology is not biblical.
I am consistent on my point whether this is a conservative approach from the Presbyterians or liberal it's indifferent to me the idea is a perversion corruption of biblical doctrine on the salvation of souls which is hindered many in history but this predestination elect madness.
That definitely hinges soul winning by individuals publicly and from house to house,
It definitely hinders the missionary work in evangelistic work of local churches,
If you are true believer, and have come to Christ for mercy as a sinner then obey the word of God!
"Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature"
Do you believe in speaking in tongues?
Question: if you look to scripture alone (Sola Scriptura) as the sole authority, where in the bible does it state specifically "only" through scripture? Truly curious.
Thank you.
I love Jesus and Methodist Church, and the Holy rules for live from the ministry of Methodist, but I love Presbyterian Church and all the body of Jesus
I am Presbyterian.
And could you please tell me about the Westminster standards?
I do have this: th-cam.com/video/BgbUmFe_l9Y/w-d-xo.html

I am also a Presbyterian.
"...Because it is the most faithful expression of what the Bible teaches."
Did Jesus build a Church or a Bible? How do you know you're in the Church that interprets the Bible correctly?
It's a cult nothing more than that.
I amen it
Mary Reed asked an important question in your comment section.
Kudos for resisting the temptation to make a predestination joke. A lesser pastor would have succumbed!
Brian Rebholtz or beards. I go there often for an easy laugh too.
Woo, what a difference young man.
God bless
You are very strong, very astute, I feel the pride.
What is the difference between PCUSA and PCA?
@VncleChrvs So what helped them being presbyterian?
Thats why im a presbyterian too
I was Presbyterian that they are respected on other peoples beliefs and faith.
Where do you or the Presbyterian church stand on matters homosexuality, women pastors or leaders or concerning tests of true conversion?
I learned recently that there are two Presbyterian denominations in America - PCUSA and PSA. The PCUSA is the one that allows those kinds of wacky stuffs. The PCA, however, is very biblical and conservative.
John Knox
Yes. Presbyterian is biblucal
BIBLUCAL, YES, THEY PROBABLY ARE.
EPC ? The EPC a few blocks from my house is liberal, supports women preachers and is charismatic.
Do Presbyterians believe in praying for the sick and healing?
We pray for the sick yes. Healing also but not in the same way as charismatics do.
Not Presbyterian, Southern Baptist, but appreciate your spirit brother, keep lifting Jesus up!
I'm Christian, I'm in a pentecostal church, but I'm Christian
Do you believe in communion ? And confession? Trinity?
IJesus the son of God?
Are you part of Protestant?
What is the difference between Presbyterian , Baptist, evangelical?
Yes, yes,yes,yes,yes
Predestination, saved by Grace alone, man has no impact of his salvation, he follows Christ because he loves his Creator not out gratitude for his blessings or in anticipation of reward whether earthly or heavenly.
Moises G.V. Messianic jews are just Baptist’s with yarmulkes they are nothing like Jewish Christianity.
