Below, are some of the verses I've discovered are deleted / missing from ESV and NIV. Side note: A "real" modernization of the KJV is the MEV. Modern English Version. That doesn't have the below verses deleted. My two recommendations are the NKJV and the ESV. I think the NKJV is best for the Old Testament while the ESV is my choice for New Testament. For my "old" translation I prefer the 1599 Geneva Bible. If you want to get a KJV, get a 1611 edition, especially if it has both prefaces, the first to the king and the second to the readers. It throws cold water on a lot of the KJV only arguments.
I found the KJV a bit hard to understand prior to being saved. Since then it is much easier to understand. I got saved in 1977 and started reading the Bible every day. I've read the Bible through every year for at least 30 years and it's very comfortable and understandable. I really believe the Holy Spirit gives understanding.

For me as an 81 year old widow, I memorized so much as a child and adult from the KJV. I read from the others but I go back to the KJV so as not to mess up my memorization.!!!!!!

I had hard time with KJV coming to christianity late in life. So I came across the NASB and truly like it. Since then the NKJV was released so I’ve been using it. These are my 3!

No Hebrew speaker uses Yahweh or Jehovah when they read the text. Yahweh is the Tetragrammaton of the name of God which has been lost because they never said it.

I am not Reformed nor Presbyterian (Southern Baptist born and bred1) but I really enjoy your videos! I have so many different translations and a few paraphases but I didn't know there was anything other than KJV until probably 10 years after I was born again. And I find that I feel so "at home" with my KJV and the NKJ helps me with places that are not so easily processed these days. Thank you for being God's faithful servant!

Thank you for this enlightening video. I have grown up reading mostly the NKJV, NIV, and NRSV, but have found the KJV and ESV later in life and enjoy them both for different reasons. I did what you said and just read Psalm 90 from the King James out loud, slowly, and meditatively. I am 11 days away from the one year anniversary of my mother's death at the age of 78 and the threescore and 10 and fourscore verse really teared me up. As someone who has struggled with the church for the past 5 years or so but still remaining faithful in private devotion, I really needed that reminder from our Lord in Psalm 90 about using my time here on Earth wisely. God's peace my brother in Christ.
I am sorry for your loss. I do have a question about the ESV. It is one I was considering for my study Bible. What do you like about it that translation and what makes it different than the rest.
@@carolynenochs9139I have the ESV thinline and ESV study heirloom Bible from crossway, the Esv is very very good since its word for word translation. That makes it true to original text, and makes it great for study material as it’s more text book like than poetry like as some other thought for thought translations or the KJV for instance. (Those bibles are still great, just harder to use and understand from a study point of view)
I appreciate your comments on this. People often need a simple approach. I did take a couple semesters of Biblical Hebrew. Certainly not nearly enough, but it did give me a great appreciation for the challenge translators face. My normal reading version is NASB - I have become accustomed to reading the portions that use the "thee-s and thou-s" instead as modernized words. I use the Key Word Study Bible because it contains Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. What I recommend for others - who will not be studying Hebrew and Greek, is this ... Fundamentally, recognize there is a big difference between READING the Bible and STUDYING the Bible. Bible STUDY will get us blessing after blessing. But even for serious Bible students, we should not forget we all need at times to put the study versions and tools down and just pick up the Bible and READ and READ and READ. You will fall in love with reading the Bible and NOT want to stop! For reading - find a mainline version that is readable for you. Sounds simplistic, but it is truly important. So the version for reading is not so technically important as it may be for studying. Now, for studying, My advice is different. FIRST, start with an interlinear seriously!. I know of one available free online: Interlinear Scripture Analyzer from Scripture4all.org is freely downloadable. They tell you what original sources they use. But I find the greatest benefit to me is it makes me very aware of words in the original language. You get to see how the syntax and grammar is very different from English. Sometimes the words are similar enough the meaning is recognizable to me as an English speaker. But keep at it and you will come across some verses where you will shake your head and be very thankful there were translators to turn it into readable English. Hopefully you will join me is thinking that bickering over the ENGLISH words is futile. Then consider the element of copyright restrictions. There is a limit to how many English words can be used in the same order before a publishing house would be guilty of plagiarism. SECOND, compare the translations of several versions. Use BibleGateway.com's parallel function. Since there is no perfect "Word for word" translation of Biblical Hebrew or Biblical Greek into English, by comparing many, we are more likely to be exposed to the alternate shades of meaning these languages contain. Revealing alternate shades of meaning was a goal of "The Amplified Bible". And it is a worthy alternate to consider. Try it in BibleGateway.com to see how your favorite passages would look. THIRD, for Old Testament passages, be sure to also consider the Septuagint (LXX). The Septuagint is a Greek version of the Hebrew Scriptures which was translated a few hundred years before Jesus. As a new believer (a long time ago) when I saw the OT being quoted by NT authors, I would look up the cross- referenced OT passage and read it in the OT. But many times there were significant differences between the OT passage and the NT quote. For example, look at Acts 2:25-28 and compare to Psalms 16:18-11. OK, they are quite similar, but why the differences? NT Authors were usually already writing in Greek. So the OT they used was not the Hebrew Scriptures, but the LXX. FOURTH, Our brains absorb information differently when we READ versus when we HEAR. I had the Bible on CD for listening as I drove. There were times I would HEAR something that I felt was different from what I was familiar to having READ. Later when I would look up the passage to read it I would see the audio recording was accurate after all. So there is a benefit to listening to the Bible in the car AS WELL AS reading our Bibles. FIFTH, Regardless of which version we choose, the most important thing of all is to Read and Read and to keep Reading!
KJV vs ESV A simple test on how a translation treats the deity of Jesus Christ…. 1 Timothy 3:16 ESV- “Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.” KJV- “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. “ Notice the ESV and may I add NASB, NIV, New World Translation (JW’s Bible) Omitted “God” for “He”! “He” could be anyone , me, you, or anyone else! (Example: I was manifested in the flesh when I came into this world; I was vindicated in the spirit when I was born again; I am seen of angels then and now, etc) The King James Version specifically states that Jesus is God! Now the “Spirit of truth” would not testify otherwise!

Without context, crazy to not call Jesus God when it literally does in the original Greek. Craziest example is 1 Corinthians 1:18 though which now opens the debate of “can you lose your salvation?” The verse literally says “being saved” meaning that you that salvation in a verb not an adjective. - someone who went to a KJV only college and absolutely destroyed professors. I can’t tell you how many times my questions in class were answered with just “ask me about that after class”

Textus receptus doesn't mean that it was transmitted directly from God, it means received text provided by a priest named Erasmus of Rotterdam. Calvin was using the same texts that the KJV translators used as he also came out of the Roman church.

I grew up KJV and started memorizing with that translation as a child. Now, at 60+, my go to translations are NKJV & ESV. I tried to love the NASB but keep coming back to my tried and true. Every year I switch to a different version for my annual reading plan and this year is the NIVUK. It’s refreshing but I can’t wait to get back to my NKJV.
I love my KJV. There are times when I pull out the NKJV to read, but within a couple of chapters I go back to the KJV, for the beauty and movement and the three-dimensional feeling I get from the sentence structure, if that makes sense.

Christian for 40years and am a King Jimmy man. It's slows us down when we read it. We have to think about what we're reading also when we quote it most will know it's the bible. Also displays the glorious doctrines of grace crystal clear.
I’ve heard from the Lord so much in the KJV. The Amplified original (classic) explains what the meaning behind what the KJV describes in single words. I.e. “love.” What kind of love? Agape? Romantic? Brotherly? “ Peter, do you ‘love’ me?” That word the KJV and NKJV as “love,” isn’t the same in all three occurrences, as they would portrait. The Greek proves this. “The third time, He uses “phileō,” whereas the first two, “agape.” Both King James will NEVER open your eyes to this. Amplified is a good version that gives the context where single word usages fail. Be blessed saints. 🙏

@@robertmcvicar5824 funny thing about bread when Jesus is tempted in the wilderness, and quotes the OT where “Man my not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Many think this “word” He mentions is the Scriptures? It’s not. That’s the “logos,” not the “rhema.” (One is the written word ‘logos’ the other a spoken word ‘rhema’). KJV and NKJV will NEVER reveal this to us. It would be more accurately said as, “Man may not live by bread alone but by every freshly spoken word of God.” I use fresh loosely to emphasize a spoken word ‘in the moment.’ This is from my own research and study in His Word. I believe the Spirit guides us and prompts us when we run across things like this. They aren’t heretical, but it really brings things alive and is food for our souls. Bless you brother
I like the KJV as it makes me slow down and 'explain' passages as i go along. plus it's beautiful and helps me keep it reverent and I love the connection to the saints it has - for centuries it's all people used
Oftentimes I think the KJV was put together with more prayer than some others, but I continue to use the Interlinear Bible and Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance with Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.

It has been said that the New King James translation is the 'bridge translation' facilitating change in more modern translations. An interesting study into this is a book by David Daniels called 'Look What's Missing'. Translations are compared and you can clearly see how our scriptures are being changed. Some would argue that this is in part to meld world religions into a one world religion which is coming as we know by the book of Revelation and chapter 17. Whoa to those changing God's word. Revelation 22:18-19 says: 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. In the words of Mr. T, "I pity the fool."
I am one of the souls that Jesus saved, when I was a 22yo married college student!! It still brings tears to my eyes. It was 1973 and KJV was the MAIN Bible in the church I attended. I taught in a Christian School and that was the version we used. I believe that learning to read KJV really helps with brain vebal developement of the brain. In fact when I was in elementary school and Bible reading was included we memorized things from the KJV. However I was always confused by Psalm 23, but as a 1st grader I wondered why the three girls:Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, were following him around. As as a very new Christian I began trying to read a new translation/paraphrase, every year. Most of them have faded into obscurity. But then the NIV came out and I still love the 1984 version, whiich is falling apart. My next favorite was ESV. As a young woman, even in the 60's and 70's, the masculine language in Bibles did not bother me, one I started actually reading them. I am a mild feminist, but I hate when people ruin great writing in an attempt to be PC. Such as rewording the Carol, Let Chrisian folks rejoice instead of men. Which ruins the poetry. I am considering goint to the NKYV, because my ESV and are literally falling apart. But I don't like the actual book I just bought. So I am not sure.
I was a junkie and I learned how to use/apply/ read a King James Bible in jail. The Holy Ghost taught me. The Holy Spirit will show you what peradventure means. And wot not means. That's why back in the day they used to use the King James Bible to teach people how to read. When they teach you to read, they teach you to use context clues. We know how important Bible context is. If God's word is important and preserved, why would you change it and update it. Why wouldn't you update your minds to learn it instead of looking for perversions, and watered down paraphrases.
I don't know what other influences you've had, but you managed to get sucked into the cultish mindset of King James Onlyism. What you don't seem to understand is that the original writings of Scripture are what God inspired-not the King James translation or any other translation for that matter. But if you want the most accurate English translation, you should read the 1995 NASB.
100% agreed. The Lord led me to the King James and it changed my life. After a few months my sister asked me, are you reading the Bible a lot? You've changed. Of course I had to get used to the thees and thous but it was so easy, and the spirit that arose from the KJV was like a drink of water I had to keep coming back to. BTW Thou thee thy thine are just the singular form of You ye your yours, like I me my mine are the singular of Us we our ours. The T words fell into disuse because the King used to use the royal 'we' (the people) and his courtiers started calling him 'you' instead of 'thou'. This spread as a politeness to lords and ladies and finally down to all folk, until thee and thou became an insult to use, as we see in Shakespeare where one character says to the other, "Dost thou 'thou' me, thou dog!" It's aways been funny to me when people say the KJV is too hard to read/understand. I can remember being four years old, sitting in my dad's lap as he taught me to read using the KJV. It's been my bible for 39 years and continually amazes me with the beauty and simplicity with which is was written. I'd encourage anyone to give it a chance. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to read.
I love and grew up with the KJV like you did, but I totally get where people are coming from when they say that it's not the easiest to understand. It's not just the thee's, thou's and thine's (which would throw anyone off, who's not familiar with Shakespearean English), but also the occasional sentence structure, the archaic words and the false friends present (words that we still use today, but they have a completely different meaning than what they had back in 1611).
the only issue I have with the KJV is that some words had a different meaning back in 1611. For example Hebrew 4 verse 12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edge sword, piercing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart. Can you show me a scholarly study on languages that shows that some form of English was used in the first century, because I can’t find one. Most will say that old English came into use in the fifth century. So again, my question is: who told you or where did you read that Paul spoke old English?
Grew up on the KJV, picked up a NKJV when I came back to God Our Father. Then I got a Patriot's Edition copy of the 1599 Geneva and have not looked back- LOVE IT! Not a hipster (haha), just like my meat closer to the source and I'm a Proud Veteran, so yes, I'm Patriotic:)
I am a Missouri Synod Lutheran and I love reading the ESV. I have a lot of King James given to me by relatives. Nothing like psalm 23 or Luke chapter 2 in King James. I like the NASB as I have know a few seminary professors who used it until ESV came out. That’s my take.
After many years of using modern translations, I recently fell in love with the authorized KJV. I can't seem to connect with my NASB as much anymore for my devotional study. The KJV just hits me differently at a deeper level. I still enjoy my NASB for comparison when diving deeper into certain passages. Mainly because my large study bible with commentary is the NASB. But again, the authorized version has just been a huge blessing to my life lately.
Yea I’m no KJV only, but yea….there is just something special about the KJV. Has a flow and is actually easier to read than the others when you get used to it.
I can relate! After many years in the modern versions, I came to read in the KJV. Comparisons among them lead me to leave the modern versions behind. Memorization and retention are easier, I find, in the KJV--surely a help with the 'belt of truth' and the 'sword of the Spirit.'

I grew up in the Southern Presbyterian church which remained conservative. I grew up with the KJV and still think of memorized verses in the King James of my childhood.
In my early years I loved the Revised Standard Version. In my middle years I loved the New King James Version. Since I've retired I have come to really love the old King James Version. I've tried the Tree of Life and some modern english versions and the very Hebraic Cepher version, but never loved them like those first three I mentioned. Regardless of which version you pick, just be sure to read the Bible. We need a dose of it daily to keep out of the darkness, and to become salt and light, and be renewed in our mind. God Bless you.
I forgot to mention that comparing translations to the Burean Study translation has gleened great insites for me. I think it is the next version I'd like to buy. I use it on the Bible Hub app.
Great video. The Geneva Bible (1599) is great! If reading it you'll notice the definite article "the" is replaced with "that" which is jarring at first but you get used to it. What I have found with the Geneva is that it reads more "modern" than the KJV, like if the ESV and KJV had a baby. Plus it has the Reformers study notes which is a great help. Matt, your videos actually helped me leave my Baptist background and become reformed. Thank you! There isn't a Presbyterian Church around me that isn't liberal but I found a Reformed Church that uses the three forms of unity with its roots in the Dutch Church and it's been a blessing.
I used to be with a PCUSA (only because there where no PCA/OPC churches around but thank God Almighty that He brought me to a solidly Reformed Baptist (Particular Baptist) church. Praise God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
In 1980 I began my journey with the KJV, and used it for about 5 years. Then switched to the NKJV, which I very much enjoyed and used in the first years of Bible College. While in Bible college I adopted the 1977 NASB, and used it for many years until the ‘95 NASB came out. My preference was to use the most literal precise translation of the most evidenced manuscripts available. Although I have bought and referenced other translations, the NASB ‘95 remained my number one translation for about 23 years. When the Legacy Standard Bible became available in 2021, I was immediately smitten by the refinements and improvements to the NASB. The translators have done an amazing and thorough job in making revisions to the ‘95 NASB, while avoiding the more “politically correct” liberal leanings of the NASB 2020. As of today, the LSB is my preferred translation, although I often read from my old NASB ‘95 Bible with 20 years of notes. It’s like “home” to me. Maybe after my LSB editions get well worn and full of notes, I’ll feel at home with them. You are someone who will understand that sentimentality I’m sure. My husband and I were in a small Bible study when we were in our 30s, and most of the other members were above 65. If anyone read a verse from a Bible other than the KJV, a woman in her 80s would say, "OK. Now I will read the verse from the real Bible." I will never forget how much I loved hearing her read from the KJV. I agree with you that it is much easier to memorize Scripture from the KJV. I use the ESV.

Respectfully, you may want to use another example to prove your point. The previous verses immediately before 3:16 clearly state that God indeed is the main subject matter (ESV): “14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” Remember, context matters. What is written verses, even chapters before or after a verse helps define God’s Word. 😊

December 2021, my wife I decided we needed to strengthen our weak Bible knowledge. We read Bible in a year, every day in 2022. It was the NIV, which while glad we read it, wasn’t what we were looking for. This year we are both reading Bible in a year NKJV. Love it. My hunger for more word grew ferocious last fall & I bought a nice KJV, had never spent extensive time in it, it’s amazing. In January I added David Nortons New Cambridge Paragraph Bible. Love them both. Using the Bible in a year format I felt the room for one more a day; earlier this month I added my 2001 ESV. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched your video by the triangle. My wife added an NASB 95, I might add an NASB 77 to my mix. When I die I want to go to Heaven with a solid grasp on The Word. God bless you.
I was raised on KJV, but 30 yrs ago switched to NKJV. I fought the change till one day the Holy Spirit, spoke to me in the Inward Voice. They all work, if my people will use them, believe them and get to know me, personally, read one that you understand and the way I speak to you. since then I was free from religious tradition that makes the word of God of no effect.🔥🔥
You do realise that there is certain words in the NKJV (as well as other "New" versions of other translations) that has been changed from what they originally was in the KJV Some may seem small and insignificant changes BUT they can and do have a huge impact on the Truth Just one small example is found in Revelation 13:16-17, I suggest you read both the KJV and the NKJV for that passage and see for yourself Are you really sure it was the Holy Spirit ? did you test the "inward voice" to see if they was who they said they was ? (if no, then why not ?)

I'm thinking optimal solution for me is the parallel bible KJV Amplified versein with texts from both bibles side by side on each page. Because when can't udnerstand KJV can check AMP and vice versa. Or read AMP and check accuracy in KJV. Any oppinion before getting it?
As a Calvary Chapel bible teacher, we use the NKJV to teach from. When we were introducting the bible to brand new readers, we use NLT booklets to get them started.
Thanks so much for this video. Being 74, I was raised on the King James translation of course, but my favorite is the New King James translation. I think I have a copy of every translations there is, including the English Standard and 1977 edition of the New American Standard. And my son and his family gave me a new Geneva Bible for Christmas. Love it.
I love the NASB as well--the older 1977 edition, not the more modern ones which have changed critical things. I love how it keeps the more intimate language of Thee and Thou in place when addressing God in prayer. There is nothing more intimate than prayer--expecially in John 17 when it is a conversation within the Godhead. To change it so that Jesus is saying 'you' to the Father in prayer is like Jesus putting the Father at arms length. Stick with the 1977 NASB, thank you. The newer ESV and NKJV just change things too much as compared to the NASB 1977 edition. They have been trying to change things ever since that Masterpiece was done. (Satan was not happy with that version so he went into overtime coming up with all the new versions to confuse people after that--even 'modernizing' the NASB 1977 version in 1995 and 2000....)
Thanks so much for this video. I was raised on the KJV then later the NKJV. Then a SS teacher said he liked the ESV, I had to get one. But never could warm up to it, guess too many years in NKJV. Then I met a missionary living in Greece and speaks Greek. He said the NASB was his go to over any of the others. Got one of those and again, couldn't warm up to it so I'm back in my trusty NKJV.
CSB is legitimately great, we adopted it at our church plant in rough area. Makes great translation choices, and isn't afraid to drop well known phraseology to do good translation (see Psalm 23). Perfect for unchurched new Christians in my opinion.

I use a NIV 1984 print that was gifted to me when I was saved in 2010 which luckily was right before it was replaced with the 2011 NIV revisal. It’s special to me because of that reason and you can tell how much it’s been used. Never written in it other than my name on the first blank page and I love it but I also use an ESV study Bible from crossway and I just ordered an illuminated ESV Psalms scripture journal because psalms is my favorite book and would love to write down my thoughts and what the Lord puts in my heart during that reading time as well as what certain verses mean to me. I’m slowly dipping my toes into the ESV translation as I try to gather more knowledge to eventually be able to minister and spread the gospel. My 1984 NIV Bible has a special place in my heart and will be the one I use for my personal use while the ESV will be for my own personal Bible studies and write down thoughts that the Lord instills in me while reading as well as highlight verses that stand out to me that I may need in the future. The KJV is difficult for me to read as English is my third language and since I live in the U.S. I choose to pray and read scripture in English I prefer translations that are easier for me to read. And because English is the language that’s most common around the world today just like how Greek was a common language during the time of Jesus and the apostles during their time of ministry and writing down what we will eventually use as scripture from their gospels and writings.

If you want a good easy to read but faithful to the majority text, i recommend The Voice bible. There is a study bible version out of print called Compass study bible.
I’m with you on the NKJV. I, too, am a now retired pastor but still teach in a Senior Adult Sunday School class. KJV is obviously what I as a seventy-nine year old grew up with in the forties, fifties. In the eighties I purchased a New King James and haven’t seen a need to change. I was also an English teacher for several years and retention of the iambic pentameter coupled with, as you mentioned, the change of many archaic words with modern equivalents
Finally a modern Christian pastor/scholar who does not dismiss the KJV. I absolutely love it for all of the reasons he lists, though I do not say it is the only one we should use as he also is not saying. But for me it is the best.
The beauty of the KJs is, it is keyed to the strongs concordance, otherwise I enjoy the different translations to bring out depth and width of meaning in the word. The KJ is not perfect as many proclaim. It has some weak and outright wrong translations in very important areas, Calling the body of Christ “the Church” instead of the called out ones has focused generations on a building instead of people. And the translations about hell and everlasting punishment are wrong when compared to original texts.

Those tramslations are the ones that make muslims and atheists critisize. They change words which they dont accept, like begotten son.... modern book say unique son. I mean who doesnt understand begotten? Only americans?
@@umarae27 to us in South Africa that grew up with UK type of english , we find it unacceptable for America to do translations to suit their communities, because that causes problems when the word"begotten" is translated to " unique" . Thats why muslims insist thatvthe bible is changed.... because of these changes in words.

All that bible worshipers can see and believe is “all scripture was given by inspiration of God”. They search the scriptures for in them they THINK they have eternal life but they never come to the Living Christ that they might actually have life (John 5:39-40). I started out as a young teen, freshly saved, reading the NLT, a paraphrase, which was so non-intimidating, it helped me fall in love with God’s word. After I matured a little, after 4 or 5 years of steady reading and going to Bible studies, church, and listening to radio Bible teachers, I heard that the NLT was a paraphrase, and I wanted a “real” Bible because all I had at the time was a New Testament. So I saved up and got myself a genuine leather KJV. I was so excited and literally wore out that Bible. It started falling apart, and it ended up with all but a few white spots between all my highlighting and underlining. Most of what I have memorized is from that translation. A few years later, I went through a devastating, life-changing experience and a consequential deep depression and for some reason in the midst of it all, I wanted a Bible with a happier cover (😂) and since my KJV was dying, I decided to get myself a new one. I’d been hearing about the accuracy of the NASB so I got one of those with a pretty reddish cover and still have it. But my very favorite has become the Amplified Bible. What’s your opinion about that?
Two of my ancestors were King James translators. Lancelot Andrews and his brother, Roger, I believe it was. The KJV is my favorite, and I go from there.
If you have KJV translators in the family tree I would strongly encourage you to be definite about names and as much else as you can possibly find out. What a neat thing!!!

Those words were translated from Greek to 1611 English. Who says you can't translate the same Greek words in 2024? The KJV is a translation. If you want to read the God breathed words you have to learn Hebrew. Aramaic, and Greek.

I'm in agreement with the video author. The KJV, NKJV, and either ESV or NASB. My preference overall is the NKJV. The beauty of the language is lovely and poetic. I read it more often than that other 2-3 by a substantial margin. An important question is "which can you memorize and really remember?" I've found that I remember the NKJV best, can memorize it, and can quote it very accurately. I've found that while I love the ESV and NASB, I cannot do that. Yes, I can closely approximate but I find myself missing a key word or confusing a phrase or confusing two separate scriptures. The next most memorable is of course the KJV. It is a miracle, classic, majestic, accurate, melodic.
@@scottbrandon6244 Good question. NIV 1984 was solid. Now the owner has forced all licensees (sellers) to the 2011 or later versions which have made accommodations that are not accurate.
@@zerochaos1 I have a few nice new NIV84 Bibles that I'm hoarding. Not really; I'm giving one as a graduation gift. I don't like the newer NIVs. NKJV is my favorite but I also love the NASB95 (not so much the 2020), ESV, and KJV.
The reason I continue to read the KJV transition, is because I enjoy studying and exegeting God’s Word. Many modern English translations are easier to read, but it’s not necessarily better. I love to go beyond the surface of scripture and go into the deep waters. Studying Hebrew and Greek to help me understand the Word of God, keeps me in-tuned with the KJV.
I've read the KJV, NRSV, and NLT cover to cover multiple times each. I respect the KJV and use it as a reference Bible. The NRSV is useful as a non-denominational ecumenical text when speaking with Christians from other denominations, but when I read the Bible for pleasure my favorite is the NLT.
I was raised in the church and my early years were KJV only. That was the version that I had memory verses of in sunday school and children's church. It is the version that the leaders of my church preached out of. KJV was the only version I knew until sometime in the 1990s. When my parents saw that I wanted to start reading the Bible, they got me a Living Bible translation. The Living Bible made everything easy to understand for me and made the Bible come alive in a way that it hadn't before. In the late 90s, after I had been reading the Living Bible for a few years, I got my first study Bible and it was NIV. I stayed almost exclusively with the NIV for the next 20 years. I now consult different versions when preparing lessons and sermons. I find that when you consult different versions you can get a better picture of the contents of the verse. Personally, I think my progression from the more reader friendly version of Living (New Living or Message might be good alternatives as well) to the NIV (an in-between translation in my opion as far as readablity) and now consulting a variety of versions and commentaries to deepen my knowlege made me fall in love and understand the Bible. The understanding that I had as a foundation was able to be built on with other verions that are more word-for-word.
I did some research into Bible translations before I bought one and those three Bibles came out on top in every test and recommendations. My wife kindly bought me an ESV Study Bible and I love it. It's full of historical information and maps etc. I'm so glad you also chose it as one of three choices.
You all should also check out the analytical literal translations (alt3) of the bible by gary f zeolla its a bible set so and has concordance and companion and (why these books are in the bible) books so to me it's more trustworthy when an author can back up what he did also you can add and take away books that you think is canonical and have a place in the bible or not. Also check out the third testament spirit of truth I hope to hear more people conversate and debat it but as far as can tell it's scriptural and the knowledge of it has been proven based of my experience the only thing is that I can't find much research about it so I'm hoping to see videos of research. Plus based on my research god seems to be calling an Era every 2000 years and has been releasing a book around every Era. In around 2000bc he released the old testament around 400ad he released 2nd testament and about 1900 he released the third testament spirit of truth. I know things are done in cycles to. And I know people miss out on understanding and seeing his miracles because they aren't truly following him that's what happens to the people who knew about Jesus but weren't truly following the made the mistake of crucifying him.

truest text? and how do you come to that conclusion? Have you read the translator's introduction? Which translation of the KJV, the Oxford or Cambridge the 1769 or the original 1611 (find out by looking at the 'copyright' page)?
The very first things I really learned to read were bible verses in the meeting hall (Brethren) where my parents took me, from my birth onwards. I remember starting to read my dad's King James bible during the services, and looking at the pictures. One of the headings over the text was "Jesus heals divers sicknesses" "Divers" was the old rendering of "diverse" I found the pictures that this conjured up in my mind very moving, of Jesus standing over some poor guy, huddled on the floor on a harbour wall somewhere, struggling for breath after nearly drowning in a diving accident....
I have started using the LSB. I like it. When I came to know the Lord, I only used the KJV. Then I switched to the NASB. I now mostly use the NKJV, the NASB. Aside from those two, I use the LSB, the ESV, and NIV. I have been reviewing, and improving my Greek since April. Thank you for your review.

I grew up kjv, preached from it for years. Still has a huge place in my heart, as well as nkjv. But most recently I'm preaching from nasb. In my personal devotions I'm reading from the lsb. Good call on your top three.....

You all should also check out the analytical literal translations (alt3) of the bible by gary f zeolla its a bible set so and has concordance and companion and (why these books are in the bible) books so to me it's more trustworthy when an author can back up what he did also you can add and take away books that you think is canonical and have a place in the bible or not. Also check out the third testament spirit of truth I hope to hear more people conversate and debat it but as far as can tell it's scriptural and the knowledge of it has been proven based of my experience the only thing is that I can't find much research about it so I'm hoping to see videos of research. Plus based on my research god seems to be calling an Era every 2000 years and has been releasing a book around every Era. In around 2000bc he released the old testament around 400ad he released 2nd testament and about 1900 he released the third testament spirit of truth. I know things are done in cycles to. And I know people miss out on understanding and seeing his miracles because they aren't truly following him that's what happens to the people who knew about Jesus but weren't truly following the made the mistake of crucifying him..
As far as languages go, I find Hebrew so much easier. It’s so phonetical as long as you learn the usual consonant combinations. But this may also be due to me being a huge lover of Jewish culture and history especially the fact that our faith, scriptures and messiah came through them as God’s trusted “messengers” in a way. My childhood sweetheart was Jewish and now IS my wife so that may also have to do with it. Lol
LoL, never been a fan of gutteral languages. I suppose as the way I learned Greek and the phoneme structures, just so much more lyrical. Of course I learned Greek before Hebrew.
Interesting philosophy! I personally love the CSB, but could easily use the ESV and do use the NKJV in my church where I’m a youth pastor. My only pet peeve is that I end up spending a considerable amount of my teaching time just explaining terms that reach over my teens & pre-teens. But all in all we have a plethora of good translations that make God’s word accessible!
I find that too. I had a tough time explaining to youth what a covenant was. They just did not get it. Teens also seem to have a problem with much of the Old Testament and taking those stories and applying them to their own life.
The GOSPEL is NOT written with ink, nor on tablets of stone, but on our hearts by the Spirit of the Living God. Under the New Covenant we are to be led by the Holy Spirit, not the bible.

I like this version for new believer’s when they come to Christ. During the years when I was getting involved in the Harvest Crusades . We would share with New believers and give them the New Testament bibles with Pastor Greg Laurie’s footnotes in the NLT New Believers New Testament bibles 👍🏼
I use kjv. My wife uses niv and we keep a nkjv in the house so we often cross-reference between the 3. I've found that this helps to get a closer understanding of the meaning as originally intended.

Thank you Matt for your comments on these translations. I became a believer in early 1958 and at that time everyone in my circle of friends used the KJV and looked askance at using the Revised Standard Version. The first Bible I bought for myself was KJV in the Scofield Study Edition. So I learned early to accept the dispensations! I was involved with the Navigators and learned to memorize many many verses. That has stood me in good stead all these years. I and my friends were eagerly awaiting the whole Bible in the NASB but it was different than all the verses I had memorized in the KJV and so some of my memorized verses began to slip away not getting reviewed as much. So I settled on the NKJV and have not regretted it. Also I use the Phillips New Testament when I want to get another view on some passages. I love it.
Grew up with KJV. Using a NLT funny thing, during my study the other day got out my KJV to flip back and forth thru verses and remembered how much I loved reading the KJ translation!!
Great video! I am a new believer and was given a NKJV study Bible. I really like it, but have a hard time understanding some of the terms and sentence structures. The ESV really helped me. But then I had people telling me the NASB is better. I feel great reading the two I have. But being someone who really wants to study the word and understand it to its fullest, it’s refreshing to know that someone who studies as much as you do prefers the same. The KJV is God's perfect and preserved words, I promise you. All the other versions are corrupt catholic knockoffs to put it kindly. Pray about it sincerely and ask God to show you if I'm lying. We are in the greatest apostasy today since the dark ages
We use kjv at church. I really enjoy John McArthur’s Legacy Standard Bible for personal reading at home. I too was surprised by the message. I learned so much reading thru it. It’s almost like an explanation of the bible. Very helpful read.

Love your choices. I started with the NKJV some 20 years ago, most of my memorized verses are in that translation. I do better with the NASB than the ESV, just personal preference, and I’m probably in the minority in that regard. Just recently started using the KJV a little and am gaining an appreciation for its beauty and elegance. Having started with the NKJV has given me a leg up in understanding the archaic words and phrases as I’m reading it. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Then I'm in the minority too. I use the NASB, KJV and NKJV for hard study. If I buy/read anything else, it's for the format of the features, not the translation. Example: I have The Apologetics Study Bible (HCSB); I bought it for the apologetics content.
I also use the NSAB as primary and ESV as secondary as well as New King James. The problem with the King James for me, is the language for some of the 1800 Elizabethan translation that you have before you is the meaning of the words have changed in the last 150 some odd years since the translation of the King James. It sounds fancier because it's using words we don't use anymore, but I just don't want to be confused with words that have changed the meaning and modern times versus then was throws off what the verse is that I'm reading. I have no issues with those who can do so, God did not design my brain to be one of those.
@@TheOpendoormedia The meaning of the words has not changed. The Jesuits and the Vatican versions corrupted the words to deceive people. A sin still means sin, a dog, still means dog, etc. The King James bible is written on a 5th grade reading level. Why is it that people can understand Shakespeare's writings, but can't read the King James bible and understand it? It's not rocket science.

I read the Bible in Latin and Greek. My favorite translation is the Anchor Bible. Two lines of text and 2 pages of footnotes. When you work your way through it, you feel you have really learned something. We have very few OT texts in Hebrew. I studied Latin,Greek, Coptic, Old Norse, Old Irish, Old Church Slavonic, French, German and Italian, but not ancient Hebrew or cuneiform. At one time, I was pretty fluent in all of them. Now, nearly 60 years later, I can barely read any of it. Three kids, 3 bouts of cancer and 3 rounds of radiation kind of did me in, but it was sure fun while it lasted.

Amazing, what a gift. I do prefer the fairly original Greek myself, wish I could read Hebrew though. I find that all the translations in English lose a lot of the finer meaning, nuances and outright different in some places.
Thanks, great video. My favorite Bibles are KJV, NKJV, NASB, LSB and NLT. But my everyday reading is NKJV this year because as I read through the Bible I like to have a bit of Study help so I'm using the NKJV Life Application Bible and as time allows also the LSB and NLT. I think I've bitten off to much. I hadn't considered the Message, although I've got nothing against it. I grew up in Presbyterian churches before the present craziness so the KJV has been a favorite. I'm presently in an Independent Baptist church. Last year I went through The KJV Study Bible that had reformation notes. It is a good one too (The Reformation Heritage Study Bible, KJV).

The KJV has been my main translation for a number of years. I love it! You just can't beat its powerful and majestic language. Plus, it's a great word-for-word translation. To plagiarize another TH-camr, the KJV is probably the greatest English translation of all time. Also, I have recently been using the BSB (Berean Standard Bible). It reads kinda like the 1984 NIV, but its a bit more literal. It's English is very smooth and easy to read, while often maintaining traditional-sounding wording. I could say several more good things about the BSB. It is fast becoming my second favorite translation.
I’ve heard from the Lord so much in the KJV and love it, BUT, to claim it’s the most literal is false and one, just one, in depth word study with a concordance proves this. The Amplified original (classic) explains what the meaning behind what the KJV describes in single words. I.e. “love.” What kind of love? Agape? Romantic? Brotherly? “ Peter, do you ‘love’ me?” That word the KJV and NKJV as “love,” isn’t the same in all three occurrences, as they would portrait. The Greek proves this. The third time, He uses “phileō,” whereas the first two, “agape.” Both King James will NEVER open your eyes to this.

We bought 6x ICBs (International Children's Bible) to read as a family with our four kids. Fantastic version for children, new young Christians or people that may struggle with reading, and easy understanding, but makes no theological missteps when compared to my trusty NKJV that I can tell. We saw that the kids struggled with some of the larger words in trying to read an 'easy' version with them (the NLT), and gave up, until we found the ICB. HIGHLY recommended.
Well, I grew up on Billy Graham. But, I myself was/am Calvary Chapel. I think you made some good picks, and a lot of sense. My KJV was printed in 1948. Lost my NKJV & ESV somewhere in all my years of travel. _(KJV lost its cover back in the 60s.)_ Picked up a NIV a few months ago, but haven't been able to get into it. It's too different. And, I also have to admit that I like using the internet versions of translations a lot. _(Eyes aren't what they use to be.)_ And I will also admit that the internet has been a blessing for me. Not only for scriptural text, but also locating different Biblical studies. _(There's so much available to us nowadays... and I am a Biblical Archeology nerd. So, I'm having a heyday.)_

This is the information age, all material is there for you to find. But pieces of New Age, like name and claim it which is a direct new age teaching of positive manifestation, for example.
Amen you are spot on, the KJV is the only bible to read translations was taken from the Textus Receptus, and not from the Greek , many new bibles was translated from both translations and even from other translations
Asbury grad here. I started using ESV in seminary because my Hebrew skills were lacking and the ESV tracked so well with the Hebrew text. I first began using it for it's benefit in exegetical papers and now study it daily because I love it.
Translating from other languages into English is tricky (even so from old language) so each translation got strengths n weaknesses Using ESV for reading is 👍 but I find ESV for indepth studies is ok so far (unlike kjv there are many many books that show kjv weaknesses and strengths) Ps: nkjv - not good bcoz it doesn't even follow TR manuscripts n omits many verses n words

In talks about Bible translation I often hear the phrase "Precise, word-for-word translation," including by you at 15:25 in this video. I'm an RTS grad and took Greek but not Hebrew. But I've done extensive professional translation in other languages. Languages each have their own syntax, style, and word order, and those differences often mean the best and most precise translation may not be word for word, because it's just as important to take into account the target language as the source language. I use the ESV, but like you I grew up with the NIV 1984, and as a professional translator I understand and appreciate the "dynamic equivalence" principle. Applying ipsissima verba too rigidly, especially toward word and phrase order, can result in a stilted and even distorted rendition that can lose the meaning of the source. The committees who have done all the translations you mentioned were not amateurs, and I am sure they took this into account, though here I'm not including those who have prioritizeed contemporary cultural considerations over accuracy and precision of the text.
Well said. There's definitely a tricky and blurry line here, because trying to keep up *too much* with evolving English can also result in a blunder. I think a good example is the NASB updating "brothers" to "brothers and sisters" (with "and sisters being italicized) to indicate how the Greek word is actually used, even though it technically translates as "brothers".
You try to explain this to a KJV only user, they'll head will explode. They'll ramble on about how this certain text was preserved by God's supernatural powers. 😂
Just listened for a second time. Me, Grade 10, I favoured NIV, that's back in the late 1970's. Recently after being gifted a NWT, and discovering, many text altered and removal, removing Jesus Divinity. Back to KJV, which I grew up with at home from a babe. I have been considering NKJV, to Smooth the KJV, old bits. Have ordered Interlinear Translation Bible English Greek Hebrew, should arrive next week. Just today I ordered a paperback copy of ESV for a friend of 27 years, now moved to a nursing home. Then I decided, go back and order one ENV for myself, less than $20 a copy here in Australia, free shipping. I was encouraged and your experience in the matter of Translation was supportive, and I guess the Holy Spirit leads us in similar paths of knowing and reading God's righteousness. Shabbat Shalom
i personal use the ESV And KJV each night. but i also have messianic translations i enjoy as well like the TLV. i am incredibly grateful to have different translations to read side by side. it helps me to understand what's being said better when i read them together.

The NASB reference edition is where I am at home. That came with studying Greek. For example, Eph. 4:22 "lusts of deceit" is exact and is only found in the NASB. In addition, if they ever substitute a word that is for readability, but not literal, they tell you that in the reference column. They also do not leave out any verses found in the KJV, that may have been added for clarification. They too are found in the reference column. Alternate translation possibilities are also there. Perhaps you didn't look closely enough. But I appreciate you and your ministry. God's peace.
YES! I so agree! I love the NASB as well--the older 1977 edition, not the more modern ones which have changed critical things. I love how it keeps the more intimate language of Thee and Thou in place when addressing God in prayer. There is nothing more intimate than prayer--expecially in John 17 when it is a conversation within the Godhead. To change it so that Jesus is saying 'you' to the Father in prayer is like Jesus putting the Father at arms length. Stick with the 1977 NASB, thank you. The newer ESV and NKJV just change things too much as compared to the NASB 1977 edition. They have been trying to change things ever since that Masterpiece was done. (Satan was not happy with that version so he went into overtime coming up with all the new versions to confuse people after that--even 'modernizing' the NASB 1977 version in 1995 and 2000....)
@@trainleader21 Nope--my pastor reads from ESV while I follow along in NASB 1977 version----to many 'little' changes that actually affect the meaning of the verses. There was nothing wrong with the NASB 1977 version. They changed it because it was too threatening to have people able to understand the real gospel reading it. Notice our last BIG revival/spiritual awakening was when that Bible came out---people got saved left and right. Immediately after that the enemy suddenly went into overdrive to bring out 'new versions'--NIV etc etc. The more new versions that come out, the darker our nation has become. Go back to the NASB 1977 version and watch revival HAPPEN!
Excellent perspective on the subject. I, like you, learnt scripture, early on, through the NIV (84) and supplemented my readings with the KJV, but never bought into ‘the debate,’ because I gleaned the same understanding of scripture through both translations… and even when young (a child), I thoroughly enjoyed reading anything from contemporary language fiction to general language non-fiction in most categories; to the point where I could remember and explain vast tracts of content, but could never remember/recite anything poetical… except for limericks… so the NIV (84) continued to be my base. Like you, also; I cannot rightly accept any NIV presented after this version of the scriptures. Now I have my trusty; well worn, NIV (84), KJV - (Including two heirloom copies), NKJV, NASB, ESV, LSB… and NRSV (out of curiosity and to understand what liberal/ecumenical Christians use to draw their conclusions from) - I find it extremely important to understand other’s beliefs (across the religious and political spectrum) so that I know why they believe the way that they do and engage with them at their level if necessary. If I could only choose three versions of the Bible for my own indulgence and personal edification … it would be tough to let go of the KJV and NASB… But for all round clarity… 1. Keep my NIV (84) 2. NKJV (for the TR link to the KJV and helpful footnotes) 3. ESV (for the reasons that you outlined) and helpful footnotes. They would perfectly compliment each other as a small library to turn to, while solidifying my own personal beliefs. Strangely though, if I had to choose one ‘bare bones’ text to study, without any cross references or helps, I would have to choose the NASB - But that may be because I already have a broad understanding of the Bible through the dynamics set out in my NIV. But; as I am treating this exercise as a hypothetical, I will hide the KJV and NASB up my sleeve to compare texts when nobody else is watching. Enjoying your presentations Pastor Matt.

The KJV is notorious for having translation errors.
My two recommendations are the NKJV and the ESV. I think the NKJV is best for the Old Testament while the ESV is my choice for New Testament. For my "old" translation I prefer the 1599 Geneva Bible. If you want to get a KJV, get a 1611 edition, especially if it has both prefaces, the first to the king and the second to the readers. It throws cold water on a lot of the KJV only arguments.
I found the KJV a bit hard to understand prior to being saved. Since then it is much easier to understand. I got saved in 1977 and started reading the Bible every day. I've read the Bible through every year for at least 30 years and it's very comfortable and understandable. I really believe the Holy Spirit gives understanding.

the plan of salvation hasn't changed, it is only through repentance and baptism in Jesus Christ name.
You might recall in 1 Corinthians it mentions that the word of God is spiritually discerned and it is the Holy Spirit that helps us understand it. 😊

Well, first off, the Bible says that the sins of the fathers are passed on from generation to generation through the (earhtly) father. So the original sin from Adam and Eve forward is passed on through the man.
And since no man can be perfect, God himself condescended himself to somehow miraculously be the seed that impregnated Mary(a virgin with a pure heart) so that she could give birth to a sinless man, Jesus Christ.
So Jesus Christ was fully man while remaining fully God when he died on the cross to pay for the sins of those who believe that he died a substitutionary death for those of us who believe in Him.
Romans 10:9 declares: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For me as an 81 year old widow, I memorized so much as a child and adult from the KJV. I read from the others but I go back to the KJV so as not to mess up my memorization.!!!!!!

The NASB is the most literal translation and the most Christian vs Secular translation.
The NASB is based on the corrupted Critical Text, see "THE WORDS OF GOD: KJB or Modern Bibles?" The King James Version 1769 is God's ordained translation, his perfect word, preserved for us today. No Hebrew speaker uses Yahweh or Jehovah when they read the text. Yahweh is the Tetragrammaton of the name of God which has been lost because they never said it.

I am not Reformed nor Presbyterian (Southern Baptist born and bred1) but I really enjoy your videos! I have so many different translations and a few paraphases but I didn't know there was anything other than KJV until probably 10 years after I was born again. And I find that I feel so "at home" with my KJV and the NKJ helps me with places that are not so easily processed these days. Thank you for being God's faithful servant!

Thank you for this enlightening video. I have grown up reading mostly the NKJV, NIV, and NRSV, but have found the KJV and ESV later in life and enjoy them both for different reasons. I did what you said and just read Psalm 90 from the King James out loud, slowly, and meditatively. I am 11 days away from the one year anniversary of my mother's death at the age of 78 and the threescore and 10 and fourscore verse really teared me up. As someone who has struggled with the church for the past 5 years or so but still remaining faithful in private devotion, I really needed that reminder from our Lord in Psalm 90 about using my time here on Earth wisely. God's peace my brother in Christ.

@@carolynenochs9139I have the ESV thinline and ESV study heirloom Bible from crossway, the Esv is very very good since its word for word translation. That makes it true to original text, and makes it great for study material as it’s more text book like than poetry like as some other thought for thought translations or the KJV for instance. (Those bibles are still great, just harder to use and understand from a study point of view)
I appreciate your comments on this. People often need a simple approach.
I did take a couple semesters of Biblical Hebrew. Certainly not nearly enough,
but it did give me a great appreciation for the challenge translators face. My
normal reading version is NASB - I have become accustomed to reading the
portions that use the "thee-s and thou-s" instead as modernized words. I use
the Key Word Study Bible because it contains Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.
What I recommend for others - who will not be studying Hebrew and Greek, is
this ...
Fundamentally, recognize there is a big difference between READING the Bible
and STUDYING the Bible. Bible STUDY will get us blessing after blessing. But
even for serious Bible students, we should not forget we all need at times to put
the study versions and tools down and just pick up the Bible and READ and
READ and READ. You will fall in love with reading the Bible and NOT want to
stop!
For reading - find a mainline version that is readable for you. Sounds simplistic,
but it is truly important. So the version for reading is not so technically important
as it may be for studying.
Now, for studying, My advice is different.
FIRST, start with an interlinear seriously!. I know of one available free online:
Interlinear Scripture Analyzer from Scripture4all.org is freely downloadable. They
tell you what original sources they use. But I find the greatest benefit to me is it
makes me very aware of words in the original language. You get to see how the
syntax and grammar is very different from English. Sometimes the words are
similar enough the meaning is recognizable to me as an English speaker. But
keep at it and you will come across some verses where you will shake your
head and be very thankful there were translators to turn it into readable English.
Hopefully you will join me is thinking that bickering over the ENGLISH words is
futile. Then consider the element of copyright restrictions. There is a limit to how
many English words can be used in the same order before a publishing house
would be guilty of plagiarism.
SECOND, compare the translations of several versions. Use
BibleGateway.com's parallel function. Since there is no perfect "Word for word"
translation of Biblical Hebrew or Biblical Greek into English, by comparing
many, we are more likely to be exposed to the alternate shades of meaning
these languages contain. Revealing alternate shades of meaning was a goal of
"The Amplified Bible". And it is a worthy alternate to consider. Try it in
BibleGateway.com to see how your favorite passages would look.
THIRD, for Old Testament passages, be sure to also consider the Septuagint
(LXX). The Septuagint is a Greek version of the Hebrew Scriptures which was
translated a few hundred years before Jesus. As a new believer (a long time
ago) when I saw the OT being quoted by NT authors, I would look up the cross-
referenced OT passage and read it in the OT. But many times there were
significant differences between the OT passage and the NT quote. For
example, look at Acts 2:25-28 and compare to Psalms 16:18-11. OK, they are
quite similar, but why the differences? NT Authors were usually already writing in
Greek. So the OT they used was not the Hebrew Scriptures, but the LXX.
FOURTH, Our brains absorb information differently when we READ versus
when we HEAR. I had the Bible on CD for listening as I drove. There were times
I would HEAR something that I felt was different from what I was familiar to
having READ. Later when I would look up the passage to read it I would see the
audio recording was accurate after all. So there is a benefit to listening to the
Bible in the car AS WELL AS reading our Bibles.
FIFTH, Regardless of which version we choose, the most important thing of all is
to Read and Read and to keep Reading!

Also in John 1:18, changes the word God to Son. Without context, crazy to not call Jesus God when it literally does in the original Greek.
Craziest example is 1 Corinthians 1:18 though which now opens the debate of “can you lose your salvation?” The verse literally says “being saved” meaning that you that salvation in a verb not an adjective.

@@captainandrew016 Are you aware that the KJV came from the Catholic church and the later translations came from ancient manuscripts found in the North African desert that were untouched by the Catholic church? Textus receptus doesn't mean that it was transmitted directly from God, it means received text provided by a priest named Erasmus of Rotterdam. Calvin was using the same texts that the KJV translators used as he also came out of the Roman church.

I grew up KJV and started memorizing with that translation as a child. Now, at 60+, my go to translations are NKJV & ESV. I tried to love the NASB but keep coming back to my tried and true.
Every year I switch to a different version for my annual reading plan and this year is the NIVUK. It’s refreshing but I can’t wait to get back to my NKJV.
I love my KJV. There are times when I pull out the NKJV to read, but within a couple of chapters I go back to the KJV, for the beauty and movement and the three-dimensional feeling I get from the sentence structure, if that makes sense.

KJV is a very deep experience which connects with my soul most profoundly.
Christian for 40years and am a King Jimmy man. It's slows us down when we read it. We have to think about what we're reading also when we quote it most will know it's the bible. Also displays the glorious doctrines of grace crystal clear.

I’ve heard from the Lord so much in the KJV. The Amplified original (classic) explains what the meaning behind what the KJV describes in single words. I.e. “love.” What kind of love? Agape? Romantic? Brotherly? “ Peter, do you ‘love’ me?” That word the KJV and NKJV as “love,” isn’t the same in all three occurrences, as they would portrait. The Greek proves this. “The third time, He uses “phileō,” whereas the first two, “agape.” Both King James will NEVER open your eyes to this.
Amplified is a good version that gives the context where single word usages fail.

@@robertmcvicar5824 funny thing about bread when Jesus is tempted in the wilderness, and quotes the OT where “Man my not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Many think this “word” He mentions is the Scriptures? It’s not. That’s the “logos,” not the “rhema.” (One is the written word ‘logos’ the other a spoken word ‘rhema’). KJV and NKJV will NEVER reveal this to us. It would be more accurately said as, “Man may not live by bread alone but by every freshly spoken word of God.” I use fresh loosely to emphasize a spoken word ‘in the moment.’ This is from my own research and study in His Word. I believe the Spirit guides us and prompts us when we run across things like this. They aren’t heretical, but it really brings things alive and is food for our souls. Bless you brother
I like the KJV as it makes me slow down and 'explain' passages as i go along. plus it's beautiful and helps me keep it reverent and I love the connection to the saints it has - for centuries it's all people used

Oftentimes I think the KJV was put together with more prayer than some others, but I continue to use the Interlinear Bible and Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance with Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.

It has been said that the New King James translation is the 'bridge translation' facilitating change in more modern translations. An interesting study into this is a book by David Daniels called 'Look What's Missing'. Translations are compared and you can clearly see how our scriptures are being changed. Some would argue that this is in part to meld world religions into a one world religion which is coming as we know by the book of Revelation and chapter 17.

I am one of the souls that Jesus saved, when I was a 22yo married college student!! It still brings tears to my eyes. It was 1973 and KJV was the MAIN Bible in the church I attended. I taught in a Christian School and that was the version we used. I believe that learning to read KJV really helps with brain vebal developement of the brain. In fact when I was in elementary school and Bible reading was included we memorized things from the KJV. However I was always confused by Psalm 23, but as a 1st grader I wondered why the three girls:Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, were following him around. As as a very new Christian I began trying to read a new translation/paraphrase, every year. Most of them have faded into obscurity. But then the NIV came out and I still love the 1984 version, whiich is falling apart. My next favorite was ESV. As a young woman, even in the 60's and 70's, the masculine language in Bibles did not bother me, one I started actually reading them. I am a mild feminist, but I hate when people ruin great writing in an attempt to be PC. Such as rewording the Carol, Let Chrisian folks rejoice instead of men.
Which ruins the poetry. I am considering goint to the NKYV, because my ESV and are literally falling apart. But I don't like the actual book I just bought. So I am not sure.

The NKJV is the only one that I've found that capitalizes He, Him, His, etc. which I find very respectful.

I was a junkie and I learned how to use/apply/ read a King James Bible in jail. The Holy Ghost taught me. The Holy Spirit will show you what peradventure means. And wot not means. That's why back in the day they used to use the King James Bible to teach people how to read. When they teach you to read, they teach you to use context clues. We know how important Bible context is. If God's word is important and preserved, why would you change it and update it. Why wouldn't you update your minds to learn it instead of looking for perversions, and watered down paraphrases.
I don't know what other influences you've had, but you managed to get sucked into the cultish mindset of King James Onlyism. What you don't seem to understand is that the original writings of Scripture are what God inspired-not the King James translation or any other translation for that matter. But if you want the most accurate English translation, you should read the 1995 NASB.

100% agreed. The Lord led me to the King James and it changed my life. After a few months my sister asked me, are you reading the Bible a lot? You've changed.
Of course I had to get used to the thees and thous but it was so easy, and the spirit that arose from the KJV was like a drink of water I had to keep coming back to. BTW Thou thee thy thine are just the singular form of You ye your yours, like I me my mine are the singular of Us we our ours. The T words fell into disuse because the King used to use the royal 'we' (the people) and his courtiers started calling him 'you' instead of 'thou'. This spread as a politeness to lords and ladies and finally down to all folk, until thee and thou became an insult to use, as we see in Shakespeare where one character says to the other, "Dost thou 'thou' me, thou dog!"
When I next read my old Bible, the NIV, it was cold and in fact snake-like. I am not joking.

It's aways been funny to me when people say the KJV is too hard to read/understand. I can remember being four years old, sitting in my dad's lap as he taught me to read using the KJV. It's been my bible for 39 years and continually amazes me with the beauty and simplicity with which is was written. I'd encourage anyone to give it a chance. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to read.
I love and grew up with the KJV like you did, but I totally get where people are coming from when they say that it's not the easiest to understand. It's not just the thee's, thou's and thine's (which would throw anyone off, who's not familiar with Shakespearean English), but also the occasional sentence structure, the archaic words and the false friends present (words that we still use today, but they have a completely different meaning than what they had back in 1611).

the only issue I have with the KJV is that some words had a different meaning back in 1611. For example Hebrew 4 verse 12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edge sword, piercing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart. Now, I thought quick meant fast, but doing research it actually means alive. Which is why I was thinking for buying the NIV version but found some very interesting information that made me second guess it so I'm looking to buy a New King James Version with updated english language.

Also in John 1:18, changes the word God to Son. Without context, crazy to not call Jesus God when it literally does in the original Greek.
Craziest example is 1 Corinthians 1:18 though which now opens the debate of “can you lose your salvation?” The verse literally says “being saved” meaning that you that salvation in a verb not an adjective.

I am a Missouri Synod Lutheran and I love reading the ESV. I have a lot of King James given to me by relatives. Nothing like psalm 23 or Luke chapter 2 in King James. I like the NASB as I have know a few seminary professors who used it until ESV came out. That’s my take.

After many years of using modern translations, I recently fell in love with the authorized KJV. I can't seem to connect with my NASB as much anymore for my devotional study. The KJV just hits me differently at a deeper level.
I still enjoy my NASB for comparison when diving deeper into certain passages. Mainly because my large study bible with commentary is the NASB.
But again, the authorized version has just been a huge blessing to my life lately.
Yea I’m no KJV only, but yea….there is just something special about the KJV. Has a flow and is actually easier to read than the others when you get used to it.
I can relate! After many years in the modern versions, I came to read in the KJV. Comparisons among them lead me to leave the modern versions behind. Memorization and retention are easier, I find, in the KJV--surely a help with the 'belt of truth' and the 'sword of the Spirit.'

In my early years I loved the Revised Standard Version. In my middle years I loved the New King James Version. Since I've retired I have come to really love the old King James Version. I've tried the Tree of Life and some modern english versions and the very Hebraic Cepher version, but never loved them like those first three I mentioned. Regardless of which version you pick, just be sure to read the Bible. We need a dose of it daily to keep out of the darkness, and to become salt and light, and be renewed in our mind. God Bless you.
I forgot to mention that comparing translations to the Burean Study translation has gleened great insites for me. I think it is the next version I'd like to buy. I use it on the Bible Hub app.
Great video. The Geneva Bible (1599) is great! If reading it you'll notice the definite article "the" is replaced with "that" which is jarring at first but you get used to it.
What I have found with the Geneva is that it reads more "modern" than the KJV, like if the ESV and KJV had a baby. Plus it has the Reformers study notes which is a great help.

1599 is my go to as well.
In 1980 I began my journey with the KJV, and used it for about 5 years. Then switched to the NKJV, which I very much enjoyed and used in the first years of Bible College. While in Bible college I adopted the 1977 NASB, and used it for many years until the ‘95 NASB came out. My preference was to use the most literal precise translation of the most evidenced manuscripts available. Although I have bought and referenced other translations, the NASB ‘95 remained my number one translation for about 23 years. When the Legacy Standard Bible became available in 2021, I was immediately smitten by the refinements and improvements to the NASB. The translators have done an amazing and thorough job in making revisions to the ‘95 NASB, while avoiding the more “politically correct” liberal leanings of the NASB 2020. As of today, the LSB is my preferred translation, although I often read from my old NASB ‘95 Bible with 20 years of notes. It’s like “home” to me. Maybe after my LSB editions get well worn and full of notes, I’ll feel at home with them. You are someone who will understand that sentimentality I’m sure. Anyway, thanks for the video, it was really interesting.
My husband and I were in a small Bible study when we were in our 30s, and most of the other members were above 65. If anyone read a verse from a Bible other than the KJV, a woman in her 80s would say, "OK. Now I will read the verse from the real Bible." I will never forget how much I loved hearing her read from the KJV. I agree with you that it is much easier to memorize Scripture from the KJV. I use the ESV.

Respectfully, you may want to use another example to prove your point. The previous verses immediately before 3:16 clearly state that God indeed is the main subject matter (ESV):
“14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.”
Remember, context matters. What is written verses, even chapters before or after a verse helps define God’s Word. 😊

December 2021, my wife I decided we needed to strengthen our weak Bible knowledge. We read Bible in a year, every day in 2022. It was the NIV, which while glad we read it, wasn’t what we were looking for. This year we are both reading Bible in a year NKJV. Love it. My hunger for more word grew ferocious last fall & I bought a nice KJV, had never spent extensive time in it, it’s amazing. In January I added David Nortons New Cambridge Paragraph Bible. Love them both. Using the Bible in a year format I felt the room for one more a day; earlier this month I added my 2001 ESV. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched your video by the triangle. My wife added an NASB 95, I might add an NASB 77 to my mix. When I die I want to go to Heaven with a solid grasp on The Word. God bless you.

I was raised on KJV, but 30 yrs ago switched to NKJV. I fought the change till one day the Holy Spirit, spoke to me in the Inward Voice. You do realise that there is certain words in the NKJV (as well as other "New" versions of other translations) that has been changed from what they originally was in the KJV
Some may seem small and insignificant changes BUT they can and do have a huge impact on the Truth
Just one small example is found in Revelation 13:16-17, I suggest you read both the KJV and the NKJV for that passage and see for yourself

I'm thinking optimal solution for me is the parallel bible KJV Amplified versein with texts from both bibles side by side on each page. Because when can't udnerstand KJV can check AMP and vice versa. Or read AMP and check accuracy in KJV. Any oppinion before getting it?

I think I have a copy of every translations there is, including the English Standard and 1977 edition of the New American Standard. And my son and his family gave me a new Geneva Bible for Christmas. I love the NASB as well--the older 1977 edition, not the more modern ones which have changed critical things. I love how it keeps the more intimate language of Thee and Thou in place when addressing God in prayer. There is nothing more intimate than prayer--expecially in John 17 when it is a conversation within the Godhead. To change it so that Jesus is saying 'you' to the Father in prayer is like Jesus putting the Father at arms length. Stick with the 1977 NASB, thank you. The newer ESV and NKJV just change things too much as compared to the NASB 1977 edition. They have been trying to change things ever since that Masterpiece was done. (Satan was not happy with that version so he went into overtime coming up with all the new versions to confuse people after that--even 'modernizing' the NASB 1977 version in 1995 and 2000....)
I got saved by reading The Living Bible! And I know others have. I’m more into the NKJV now, but the TLB was my starting point.
Thanks so much for this video. I was raised on the KJV then later the NKJV. Then a SS teacher said he liked the ESV, I had to get one. But never could warm up to it, guess too many years in NKJV. Then I met a missionary living in Greece and speaks Greek. He said the NASB was his go to over any of the others. Got one of those and again, couldn't warm up to it so I'm back in my trusty NKJV.
I think God was stopping yo0u from warming up to the ESV. You'll find the devil in it more often than you find God.

CSB is legitimately great, we adopted it at our church plant in rough area. Makes great translation choices, and isn't afraid to drop well known phraseology to do good translation (see Psalm 23). Perfect for unchurched new Christians in my opinion.

I don't care for CSB. I guess we all have different choices.
Holman Christian Standard Bible is the choice for those who want a bold Bible.
I use a NIV 1984 print that was gifted to me when I was saved in 2010 which luckily was right before it was replaced with the 2011 NIV revisal. It’s special to me because of that reason and you can tell how much it’s been used. Never written in it other than my name on the first blank page and I love it but I also use an ESV study Bible from crossway and I just ordered an illuminated ESV Psalms scripture journal because psalms is my favorite book and would love to write down my thoughts and what the Lord puts in my heart during that reading time as well as what certain verses mean to me. I’m slowly dipping my toes into the ESV translation as I try to gather more knowledge to eventually be able to minister and spread the gospel. My 1984 NIV Bible has a special place in my heart and will be the one I use for my personal use while the ESV will be for my own personal Bible studies and write down thoughts that the Lord instills in me while reading as well as highlight verses that stand out to me that I may need in the future.
The KJV is difficult for me to read as English is my third language and since I live in the U.S. I choose to pray and read scripture in English I prefer translations that are easier for me to read. And because English is the language that’s most common around the world today just like how Greek was a common language during the time of Jesus and the apostles during their time of ministry and writing down what we will eventually use as scripture from their gospels and writings.
KJV vs ESV
A simple test on how a translation treats the deity of Jesus Christ….
1 Timothy 3:16
ESV- “Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.”
KJV- “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. “
Notice the ESV and may I add NASB, NIV, New World Translation (JW’s Bible)
Omitted “God” for “He”!
“He” could be anyone , me, you, or anyone else! (Example: I was manifested in the flesh when I came into this world; I was vindicated in the spirit when I was born again; I am seen of angels then and now, etc)
The King James Version specifically states that Jesus is God!
Now the “Spirit of truth” would not testify otherwise!
If you want a good easy to read but faithful to the majority text, i recommend The Voice bible. There is a study bible version out of print called Compass study bible.
I’m with you on the NKJV. I, too, am a now retired pastor but still teach in a Senior Adult Sunday School class. KJV is obviously what I as a seventy-nine year old grew up with in the forties, fifties. In the eighties I purchased a New King James and haven’t seen a need to change. I was also an English teacher for several years and retention of the iambic pentameter coupled with, as you mentioned, the change of many archaic words with modern equivalents

Finally a modern Christian pastor/scholar who does not dismiss the KJV. I absolutely love it for all of the reasons he lists, though I do not say it is the only one we should use as he also is not saying. But for me it is the best.
I have always read the KJV ( I’m 22) and will always.
Why?
The beauty of the KJs is, it is keyed to the strongs concordance, otherwise I enjoy the different translations to bring out depth and width of meaning in the word. The KJ is not perfect as many proclaim. It has some weak and outright wrong translations in very important areas, Calling the body of Christ “the Church” instead of the called out ones has focused generations on a building instead of people. And the translations about hell and everlasting punishment are wrong when compared to original texts.

I’m a NASB guy. I love the ESV, CSB and the NLT as well.
Those tramslations are the ones that make muslims and atheists critisize. They change words which they dont accept, like begotten son.... modern book say unique son. I mean who doesnt understand begotten? Only americans?

The ESV uses the Wescott and Hort which takes the liberty to remove quite a few verses that are in the textus receptus. I use and recommend the NKJV.
I’m right there with you, came out of a KJV only tradition, but now in my studies i rely on the KJV and ESV mainly for the reason you sited. When doing my daily devotional reading, I still love the flow and language of the KJV. Thanks for the great content of this video.

All that bible worshipers can see and believe is “all scripture was given by inspiration of God”. They search the scriptures for in them they THINK they have eternal life but they never come to the Living Christ that they might actually have life (John 5:39-40). I started out as a young teen, freshly saved, reading the NLT, a paraphrase, which was so non-intimidating, it helped me fall in love with God’s word.
After I matured a little, after 4 or 5 years of steady reading and going to Bible studies, church, and listening to radio Bible teachers, I heard that the NLT was a paraphrase, and I wanted a “real” Bible because all I had at the time was a New Testament. So I saved up and got myself a genuine leather KJV. I was so excited and literally wore out that Bible. It started falling apart, and it ended up with all but a few white spots between all my highlighting and underlining.
Most of what I have memorized is from that translation. A few years later, I went through a devastating, life-changing experience and a consequential deep depression and for some reason in the midst of it all, I wanted a Bible with a happier cover (😂) and since my KJV was dying, I decided to get myself a new one.
I’d been hearing about the accuracy of the NASB so I got one of those with a pretty reddish cover and still have it.
But my very favorite has become the Amplified Bible. What’s your opinion about that?

Those words were translated from Greek to 1611 English. Who says you can't translate the same Greek words in 2024? The KJV is a translation. If you want to read the
God breathed words you have to learn Hebrew. Aramaic, and Greek.

I'm in agreement with the video author. The KJV, NKJV, and either ESV or NASB. My preference overall is the NKJV. The beauty of the language is lovely and poetic. I read it more often than that other 2-3 by a substantial margin. An important question is "which can you memorize and really remember?" I've found that I remember the NKJV best, can memorize it, and can quote it very accurately. I've found that while I love the ESV and NASB, I cannot do that. Yes, I can closely approximate but I find myself missing a key word or confusing a phrase or confusing two separate scriptures. The next most memorable is of course the KJV. It is a miracle, classic, majestic, accurate, melodic.
What about the NIV?
@@scottbrandon6244 Good question. NIV 1984 was solid. Now the owner has forced all licensees (sellers) to the 2011 or later versions which have made accommodations that are not accurate.
@@zerochaos1 I have a few nice new NIV84 Bibles that I'm hoarding. Not really; I'm giving one as a graduation gift. I don't like the newer NIVs. NKJV is my favorite but I also love the NASB95 (not so much the 2020), ESV, and KJV.
The reason I continue to read the KJV transition, is because I enjoy studying and exegeting God’s Word. Many modern English translations are easier to read, but it’s not necessarily better.
I love to go beyond the surface of scripture and go into the deep waters. Studying Hebrew and Greek to help me understand the Word of God, keeps me in-tuned with the KJV.
I read it in Latin because that is even better. Harder = better

I've read the KJV, NRSV, and NLT cover to cover multiple times each. I respect the KJV and use it as a reference Bible. The NRSV is useful as a non-denominational ecumenical text when speaking with Christians from other denominations, but when I read the Bible for pleasure my favorite is the NLT.
I like the NLT and the Jewish JPS old testament.
I was raised in the church and my early years were KJV only. That was the version that I had memory verses of in sunday school and children's church. It is the version that the leaders of my church preached out of. KJV was the only version I knew until sometime in the 1990s. When my parents saw that I wanted to start reading the Bible, they got me a Living Bible translation. The Living Bible made everything easy to understand for me and made the Bible come alive in a way that it hadn't before. In the late 90s, after I had been reading the Living Bible for a few years, I got my first study Bible and it was NIV. I stayed almost exclusively with the NIV for the next 20 years. I now consult different versions when preparing lessons and sermons. I find that when you consult different versions you can get a better picture of the contents of the verse. Personally, I think my progression from the more reader friendly version of Living (New Living or Message might be good alternatives as well) to the NIV (an in-between translation in my opion as far as readablity) and now consulting a variety of versions and commentaries to deepen my knowlege made me fall in love and understand the Bible. The understanding that I had as a foundation was able to be built on with other verions that are more word-for-word.
I did some research into Bible translations before I bought one and those three Bibles came out on top in every test and recommendations. My wife kindly bought me an ESV Study Bible and I love it. It's full of historical information and maps etc. I'm so glad you also chose it as one of three choices.
You all should also check out the analytical literal translations (alt3) of the bible by gary f zeolla its a bible set so and has concordance and companion and (why these books are in the bible) books so to me it's more trustworthy when an author can back up what he did also you can add and take away books that you think is canonical and have a place in the bible or not. Also check out the third testament spirit of truth I hope to hear more people conversate and debat it but as far as can tell it's scriptural and the knowledge of it has been proven based of my experience the only thing is that I can't find much research about it so I'm hoping to see videos of research. Plus based on my research god seems to be calling an Era every 2000 years and has been releasing a book around every Era. In around 2000bc he released the old testament around 400ad he released 2nd testament and about 1900 he released the third testament spirit of truth. I know things are done in cycles to. truest text? and how do you come to that conclusion? Have you read the translator's introduction? Which translation of the KJV, the Oxford or Cambridge the 1769 or the original 1611 (find out by looking at the 'copyright' page)?
The very first things I really learned to read were bible verses in the meeting hall (Brethren) where my parents took me, from my birth onwards. I remember starting to read my dad's King James bible during the services, and looking at the pictures. One of the headings over the text was "Jesus heals divers sicknesses" "Divers" was the old rendering of "diverse" I found the pictures that this conjured up in my mind very moving, of Jesus standing over some poor guy, huddled on the floor on a harbour wall somewhere, struggling for breath after nearly drowning in a diving accident....

I have started using the LSB. I like it.
When I came to know the Lord, I only used the KJV. Then I switched to the NASB.
I now mostly use the NKJV, the NASB. Aside from those two, I use the LSB, the ESV, and NIV.
I have been reviewing, and improving my Greek since April.

I love KJV, but have just bought the Legacy Standard Bible, which I'm enjoying very much.
I grew up kjv, preached from it for years. Still has a huge place in my heart, as well as nkjv. But most recently I'm preaching from nasb. In my personal devotions I'm reading from the lsb.

As far as languages go, I find Hebrew so much easier. It’s so phonetical as long as you learn the usual consonant combinations. But this may also be due to me being a huge lover of Jewish culture and history especially the fact that our faith, scriptures and messiah came through them as God’s trusted “messengers” in a way. My childhood sweetheart was Jewish and now IS my wife so that may also have to do with it. Lol
LoL, never been a fan of gutteral languages. I suppose as the way I learned Greek and the phoneme structures, just so much more lyrical. Of course I learned Greek before Hebrew.
Interesting philosophy! I personally love the CSB, but could easily use the ESV and do use the NKJV in my church where I’m a youth pastor. My only pet peeve is that I end up spending a considerable amount of my teaching time just explaining terms that reach over my teens & pre-teens. But all in all we have a plethora of good translations that make God’s word accessible!
Teaching the meaning of words seems very much needed nowadays, since many people don’t even know what a woman is.
I find that too. I had a tough time explaining to youth what a covenant was. They just did not get it. Teens also seem to have a problem with much of the Old Testament and taking those stories and applying them to their own life.

I love NLT to me, I can hear Jesus talking to me so easily in it.
I like this version for new believer’s when they come to Christ. During the years when I was getting involved in the Harvest Crusades . We would share with New believers and give them the New Testament bibles with Pastor Greg Laurie’s footnotes in the NLT New Believers New Testament bibles 👍🏼

I use kjv. My wife uses niv and we keep a nkjv in the house so we often cross-reference between the 3. I've found that this helps to get a closer understanding of the meaning as originally intended.

Thank you Matt for your comments on these translations. I became a believer in early 1958 and at that time everyone in my circle of friends used the KJV and looked askance at using the Revised Standard Version. The first Bible I bought for myself was KJV in the Scofield Study Edition. So I learned early to accept the dispensations! I was involved with the Navigators and learned to memorize many many verses. That has stood me in good stead all these years. I and my friends were eagerly awaiting the whole Bible in the NASB but it was different than all the verses I had memorized in the KJV and so some of my memorized verses began to slip away not getting reviewed as much. So I settled on the NKJV and have not regretted it. Also I use the Phillips New Testament when I want to get another view on some passages. I love it.

Great video! I am a new believer and was given a NKJV study Bible. I really like it, but have a hard time understanding some of the terms and sentence structures. The ESV really helped me. But then I had people telling me the NASB is better. I feel great reading the two I have. But being someone who really wants to study the word and understand it to its fullest, it’s refreshing to know that someone who studies as much as you do prefers the same. We use kjv at church. I really enjoy John McArthur’s Legacy Standard Bible for personal reading at home. I too was surprised by the message. I learned so much reading thru it. It’s almost like an explanation of the bible. Very helpful read.

Love your choices. I started with the NKJV some 20 years ago, most of my memorized verses are in that translation. I do better with the NASB than the ESV, just personal preference, and I’m probably in the minority in that regard. Just recently started using the KJV a little and am gaining an appreciation for its beauty and elegance. Having started with the NKJV has given me a leg up in understanding the archaic words and phrases as I’m reading it. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Then I'm in the minority too. I use the NASB, KJV and NKJV for hard study. If I buy/read anything else, it's for the format of the features, not the translation. Example: I have The Apologetics Study Bible (HCSB); I bought it for the apologetics content.
The NKJV is a corrupted bible. Some of the covers on the NKJV have the satanic triquetra on it. 🤔
I also use the NSAB as primary and ESV as secondary as well as New King James. The problem with the King James for me, is the language for some of the 1800 Elizabethan translation that you have before you is the meaning of the words have changed in the last 150 some odd years since the translation of the King James.
It sounds fancier because it's using words we don't use anymore, but I just don't want to be confused with words that have changed the meaning and modern times versus then was throws off what the verse is that I'm reading.
I have no issues with those who can do so, God did not design my brain to be one of those.

A sin still means sin, a dog, still means dog, etc. The King James bible is written on a 5th grade reading level. Why is it that people can understand Shakespeare's writings, but can't read the King James bible and understand it? It's not rocket science.

I read the Bible in Latin and Greek. My favorite translation is the Anchor Bible. Two lines of text and 2 pages of footnotes. When you work your way through it, you feel you have really learned something. We have very few OT texts in Hebrew. I studied Latin,Greek, Coptic, Old Norse, Old Irish, Old Church Slavonic, French, German and Italian, but not ancient Hebrew or cuneiform. At one time, I was pretty fluent in all of them. Now, nearly 60 years later, I can barely read any of it. Three kids, 3 bouts of cancer and 3 rounds of radiation kind of did me in, but it was sure fun while it lasted.

Amazing, what a gift. I do prefer the fairly original Greek myself, wish I could read Hebrew though. I find that all the translations in English lose a lot of the finer meaning, nuances and outright different in some places.

Thanks, great video. My favorite Bibles are KJV, NKJV, NASB, LSB and NLT. But my everyday reading is NKJV this year because as I read through the Bible I like to have a bit of Study help so I'm using the NKJV Life Application Bible and as time allows also the LSB and NLT. I think I've bitten off to much. I hadn't considered the Message, although I've got nothing against it. I grew up in Presbyterian churches before the present craziness so the KJV has been a favorite. I'm presently in an Independent Baptist church. Last year I went through The KJV Study Bible that had reformation notes. It is a good one too (The Reformation Heritage Study Bible, KJV).

The KJV has been my main translation for a number of years. I love it! You just can't beat its powerful and majestic language. Plus, it's a great word-for-word translation. To plagiarize another TH-camr, the KJV is probably the greatest English translation of all time.
Also, I have recently been using the BSB (Berean Standard Bible). It reads kinda like the 1984 NIV, but its a bit more literal. It's English is very smooth and easy to read, while often maintaining traditional-sounding wording. I could say several more good things about the BSB. It is fast becoming my second favorite translation.
I’ve heard from the Lord so much in the KJV and love it, BUT, to claim it’s the most literal is false and one, just one, in depth word study with a concordance proves this. The Amplified original (classic) explains what the meaning behind what the KJV describes in single words. I.e. “love.” What kind of love? Agape? Romantic? Brotherly? “ Peter, do you ‘love’ me?” That word the KJV and NKJV as “love,” isn’t the same in all three occurrences, as they would portrait. The Greek proves this. The third time, He uses “phileō,” whereas the first two, “agape.” Both King James will NEVER open your eyes to this.

We bought 6x ICBs (International Children's Bible) to read as a family with our four kids. Fantastic version for children, new young Christians or people that may struggle with reading, and easy understanding, but makes no theological missteps when compared to my trusty NKJV that I can tell. We saw that the kids struggled with some of the larger words in trying to read an 'easy' version with them (the NLT), and gave up, until we found the ICB. HIGHLY recommended.
Well, I grew up on Billy Graham. But, I myself was/am Calvary Chapel. I think you made some good picks, and a lot of sense. My KJV was printed in 1948. Lost my NKJV & ESV somewhere in all my years of travel. _(KJV lost its cover back in the 60s.)_ Picked up a NIV a few months ago, but haven't been able to get into it. It's too different. And, I also have to admit that I like using the internet versions of translations a lot. _(Eyes aren't what they use to be.)_ And I will also admit that the internet has been a blessing for me. Not only for scriptural text, but also locating different Biblical studies. _(There's so much available to us nowadays... and I am a Biblical Archeology nerd. So, I'm having a heyday.)_

NKJV hands down is the best English Bible. Nothing comes close to it overall in terms of intact literalness, legibility, and literary quality.
It retains the excellent prose of the KJV while being fully intelligible. Plus it uses the TR which is a pro- for me.

This is the information age, all material is there for you to find. But pieces of New Age, like name and claim it which is a direct new age teaching of positive manifestation, for example.
Im reformed baptist, and I started with KJV and I have grown in ESV. I like the ESV reads as I get older.

The only reliable translation is the Douay Rheims.
Asbury grad here. I started using ESV in seminary because my Hebrew skills were lacking and the ESV tracked so well with the Hebrew text. I first began using it for it's benefit in exegetical papers and now study it daily because I love it.

Translating from other languages into English is tricky (even so from old language) so each translation got strengths n weaknesses
Using ESV for reading is 👍 but I find ESV for indepth studies is ok so far (unlike kjv there are many many books that show kjv weaknesses and strengths)

In talks about Bible translation I often hear the phrase "Precise, word-for-word translation," including by you at 15:25 in this video. I'm an RTS grad and took Greek but not Hebrew. But I've done extensive professional translation in other languages. Languages each have their own syntax, style, and word order, and those differences often mean the best and most precise translation may not be word for word, because it's just as important to take into account the target language as the source language. I use the ESV, but like you I grew up with the NIV 1984, and as a professional translator I understand and appreciate the "dynamic equivalence" principle. Applying ipsissima verba too rigidly, especially toward word and phrase order, can result in a stilted and even distorted rendition that can lose the meaning of the source. The committees who have done all the translations you mentioned were not amateurs, and I am sure they took this into account, though here I'm not including those who have prioritizeed contemporary cultural considerations over accuracy and precision of the text.
Well said. There's definitely a tricky and blurry line here, because trying to keep up *too much* with evolving English can also result in a blunder. I think a good example is the NASB updating "brothers" to "brothers and sisters" (with "and sisters being italicized) to indicate how the Greek word is actually used, even though it technically translates as "brothers".
You try to explain this to a KJV only user, they'll head will explode. They'll ramble on about how this certain text was preserved by God's supernatural powers. 😂

Me, Grade 10, I favoured NIV, that's back in the late 1970's.
Recently after being gifted a NWT, and discovering, many text altered and removal, removing Jesus Divinity.
Back to KJV, which I grew up with at home from a babe.
I have been considering NKJV, to Smooth the KJV, old bits.
Have ordered Interlinear Translation Bible English Greek Hebrew, should arrive next week.
Just today I ordered a paperback copy of ESV for a friend of 27 years, now moved to a nursing home. Then I decided, go back and order one ENV for myself, less than $20 a copy here in Australia, free shipping.
I was encouraged and your experience in the matter of Translation was supportive, and I guess the Holy Spirit leads us in similar paths of knowing and reading God's righteousness.

i personal use the ESV And KJV each night. but i also have messianic translations i enjoy as well like the TLV. i am incredibly grateful to have different translations to read side by side. it helps me to understand what's being said better when i read them together.

You all should also check out the analytical literal translations (alt3) of the bible by gary f zeolla its a bible set so and has concordance and companion and (why these books are in the bible) books so to me it's more trustworthy when an author can back up what he did also you can add and take away books that you think is canonical and have a place in the bible or not. Also check out the third testament spirit of truth I hope to hear more people conversate and debat it but as far as can tell it's scriptural and the knowledge of it has been proven based of my experience the only thing is that I can't find much research about it so I'm hoping to see videos of research. Plus based on my research god seems to be calling an Era every 2000 years and has been releasing a book around every Era. In around 2000bc he released the old testament around 400ad he released 2nd testament and about 1900 he released the third testament spirit of truth. I know things are done in cycles to. And I know people miss out on understanding and seeing his miracles because they aren't truly following him that's what happens to the people who knew about Jesus but weren't truly following the made the mistake of crucifying him.

The NASB reference edition is where I am at home. That came with studying Greek. For example, Eph. 4:22 "lusts of deceit" is exact and is only found in the NASB. In addition, if they ever substitute a word that is for readability, but not literal, they tell you that in the reference column. They also do not leave out any verses found in the KJV, that may have been added for clarification. They too are found in the reference column. Alternate translation possibilities are also there. Perhaps you didn't look closely enough. But I appreciate you and your ministry. God's peace.
YES! I so agree! I love the NASB as well--the older 1977 edition, not the more modern ones which have changed critical things. I love how it keeps the more intimate language of Thee and Thou in place when addressing God in prayer. There is nothing more intimate than prayer--expecially in John 17 when it is a conversation within the Godhead. To change it so that Jesus is saying 'you' to the Father in prayer is like Jesus putting the Father at arms length. Stick with the 1977 NASB, thank you. The newer ESV and NKJV just change things too much as compared to the NASB 1977 edition. They have been trying to change things ever since that Masterpiece was done. (Satan was not happy with that version so he went into overtime coming up with all the new versions to confuse people after that--even 'modernizing' the NASB 1977 version in 1995 and 2000....)
Same here. NASB is the literally translation of the Bible, then I also use ESV.
@@trainleader21 Nope--my pastor reads from ESV while I follow along in NASB 1977 version----to many 'little' changes that actually affect the meaning of the verses. There was nothing wrong with the NASB 1977 version. They changed it because it was too threatening to have people able to understand the real gospel reading it. Notice our last BIG revival/spiritual awakening was when that Bible came out---people got saved left and right. Immediately after that the enemy suddenly went into overdrive to bring out 'new versions'--NIV etc etc. The more new versions that come out, the darker our nation has become. Go back to the NASB 1977 version and watch revival HAPPEN!

I, like you, learnt scripture, early on, through the NIV (84) and supplemented my readings with the KJV, but never bought into ‘the debate,’ because I gleaned the same understanding of scripture through both translations… and even when young (a child), I thoroughly enjoyed reading anything from contemporary language fiction to general language non-fiction in most categories; to the point where I could remember and explain vast tracts of content, but could never remember/recite anything poetical… except for limericks… so the NIV (84) continued to be my base.
Like you, also; I cannot rightly accept any NIV presented after this version of the scriptures.
Now I have my trusty; well worn, NIV (84), KJV - (Including two heirloom copies), NKJV, NASB, ESV, LSB… and NRSV (out of curiosity and to understand what liberal/ecumenical Christians use to draw their conclusions from) - I find it extremely important to understand other’s beliefs (across the religious and political spectrum) so that I know why they believe the way that they do and engage with them at their level if necessary.
If I could only choose three versions of the Bible for my own indulgence and personal edification … it would be tough to let go of the KJV and NASB… But for all round clarity…
1. Keep my NIV (84)
2. NKJV (for the TR link to the KJV and helpful footnotes)
3. ESV (for the reasons that you outlined) and helpful footnotes.
They would perfectly compliment each other as a small library to turn to, while solidifying my own personal beliefs.
Strangely though, if I had to choose one ‘bare bones’ text to study, without any cross references or helps, I would have to choose the NASB - But that may be because I already have a broad understanding of the Bible through the dynamics set out in my NIV.
But; as I am treating this exercise as a hypothetical, I will hide the KJV and NASB up my sleeve to compare texts when nobody else is watching.

I thought that it was the Holy Spirit who speaks the truth of the Gospel directly into our hearts as we read God’s Word.
If somebody reads the Holy Scriptures out of context, then maybe they are being lead by somebody other than God.
