@@danielblake704 Hi Dan. They’re running off the rig PSU/battery. The board drives the fan. I no longer have this setup, but I do have a similar 70cm amp with a fan with just and on/off switch (no thermostat control board). I just leave it on while operating 👍🏻
I have just put the fan onto the heatsink and I found that if you use the top holes on the fan and then go to the base of the linear (bypassing the lower hole) with the first cable tie, where the first cable tie goes through "the hole" in the second tie (and likewise 2 into 3), you can adjust the ties so that they create small feet on the lower two corners of each "wrap", which raises the amp about 1/4" off the ground creating a little more airflow underneath the amp 73 de Terry G0BIX
Hi Ian bit unrelated to the video but I wonder if you still have that linear? I just picked one up for nothing as a faulty unit and found a couple of burned out resistors on the preamp stage (im guessing someone transmitted with the preamp on and no ptt wire connected) but I cant get any schematics that give values of the resistors. You would be a lifesaver if you could take the white cover off and take picture of them, just need the colour codes to replace them with the right ones, I can let you know exactly where they are but roughly an inch behind the pre amp switch itself. Thanks
No, good question 👍🏻 Either way, depending upon whether the fan is ok upside down. This fan is top-side up (label on top) and blows air down into the vents. My 70cm amp is the same. Both work great (70cm is just on a switch and not a thermostat). Thanks.
I brought two cheap amps from Walmart and as soon as I start playing through my speakers old school 15 inch and woofers .I noticed when I start on the Joe Bonomassa it really started get it hot.I took a thermometer and put it right on the side vent read 109 degrees.I knew that was Hot.I knew I had an old computer in my shed got the fan and a 12 volt converter it went from 109 to 95 or lower.I brought another one just the same and was playing today and it does not have a fan.I noticed it started out fine sounded pretty good until it got hot then it started to sound Fuzzy. The new one I was playing today through 600 watts woofer from Walmart. The one with the Fan sounds great.I also ordered a 18 dollar amp just because I am really curious 18 Dollars?
@@ianxfs I also just now found they don't like to play cold.I left my fan plugged in over night and it sounded Awful.I now got the amp nice and warm and it sounds really good.

Nice vid Ian and good bit of construction. I do wonder whether the manufacturer’s PA heat sinking isn’t adequately rated for ‘running’ in contests (ie duty cycle probably 30% on 70% off vs contesting 80/20)? Unfortunately not many manufacturers seem to provide info to allow you to make an informed choice. Hope to catch you Tuesday on 2m contest night. 73 Nick M1DDD
G1WHP 15W Paul. There’s a 200W version, but the prices are even higher than the high this was 😮 There’s a few similar/higher power kits out there, but 48V, which would be good if you have mains I think.
Simple, effective, and quiet!
Indeed! 👍🏻
Thank you for the informative vids l. This be great add for those radios that use the whole radio as a heat sink.
Kevin Helijeepworld Yes, good point Kevin.
Hello Ian I like what you have done here and was wondering how are powering the the fan and control board? Tnx Dan

Never thought of that! Good idea for bonus feet 👍🏻

Sorry, I sold it. Good luck with the fix. There’s a lot of these about, so hopefully someone can help 🤞🏻😀
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks William!
Dumb question..is fan supposed to blow air into vents.. or suck air through vents out fan?? Thanks..

Hi Ian, can you put up some links or item numbers for the fan and controller, I need to do a similar thing with some home beer making kit.

NICKGAR7 Yes Nick, possibly. Keeps the car warm I suppose 😀 Will see how it fairs Tuesday. Will keep my ears open for you 👍🏻
Nice amp and I like the fan mod. Where did you get your Yaesu mat from 👍🇬🇧👍
G1WHP Thanks Paul! The mat was from a rally. I think it’s the company who do the branded rig covers who’ve been at the main rallies I’ve been to.
Looks good.... I need some.radio themed desk mats for the trailer. How much input power is required to get 100w out of the amp.
