When presented with talent like hers Captain Grigory did something similar to what a character in one of my own stories did, warned her not to ever touch another piece of equipment she wasn't qualified for … and then challenged her to qualify and excel.
I don't write Star Trek, I prefer to 'play in my own little pond' rather than someone else's. Your Captain Grigory is a character I like, very human.
This young actress displayed something you don't often see, her reaction once she handled the emergency and the pressure was off. Her hands shook in reaction just as often happens in real life once the emergency is over and she had a chance to actually think about it. I've seen it myself. She (actress and character) did well.
Very nice! Combat scenes were easy to follow, and the flow was decent. The promotion of a suddenly discovered talent seemed sensible, given the circumstances, even though the captain will be going out on a limb due to her academic record.
Wow did you pack a lot of excitement and character development into a simple few moments. The more I watch this series the more I'm looking forward to the next episode with great eagerness. My heartiest congratulations one and all

I love these episodes. Such characters, nice near slip about being joined. Wonderful cast, this captain is growing to become one of my favorites, fanon or canon. Well done everyone.

Ah, almost let it be known that she was a joined Trill. I hope we get more of a backstory for this character and his much Star Fleet actually knows about Trill. I am assuming this is an AU series!
Actually she's not a joined Trill. She decided to forego that and entered Starfleet instead.
The Trill were on Earth when Doctor McCoy were in med school. He met Dax during that time.

Nice one So I assume The Federation doesn't yet know about the Trill custom of joining symbiotes to hosts. Seeing as there is nothing mentioned about it in Canon as of this point in the timeline, that was a very subtle nod to Deep Space Nine. Great work here. Thanks for sharing this fine segment.
We figure it's a "need to know only" sort of thing as it appears to.have been the case during TNG.

Quite so. The nature of the Trill was not disclosed in this production.
Very nice indeed.... Just one observation that puzzles me. This is the first time I've seen in StarTrek where 3-4 members of the bridge crew stop tending their duties in the middle of a battle, leaving the helm unmanned, to close the eyes of the dead helmsman and carry her off while they're still being shot at and taking damage. That all seemed a bit awkward in the flow of things.
Other than that - Really good storytelling! Nice to see an impulse version of the Picard Maneuver!

Thanks for the input! Very astute observation! The original script called for Security and Environmental (neither of which are usually involved in ship-to-ship combat) to carry the lifeless body of the Navigator from the bridge. Unfortunately, we had some absences for this shoot. Tactical and Environmental didn't make it, so we moved Science to Tactical. We took our non-speaking crewman and put her at Science. That left Engineering to get Environmental's lines and Security to take her from the bridge. The holiday season can be a pain to schedule (in fact, this year -- 2014 -- marks the first year we haven't scheduled a December shoot). Thanks for watching, and for the feedback!
@@Potemkin1711 As someone who did stage craft for 10-ish years, I totally get emergency recasting to cover the critical rolls! You all do great work and it's good to see. Too bad to see the train wrecks that have been the recent ST. I'm not subscribed to the stream services, so haven't bothered watching STD or Picard. Hope that you and the other fan story tellers can keep making 'classic' style Trek stories.

I wish you guys lived closer to me, kind of hard to find people around here to get this involved in a project like this. Cannot wait to see more.

I understand why he wouldn't want her touching equipment she wasn't rated for, but in an emergency what's the harm? She operates it and the ship might be severely damaged or destroyed. Or she doesn't and the ship *is* badly damaged or destroyed, Tactical theory dictates option 1.
She was a yeoman with no practical experience that Captain Grigory was aware of. Would you want a flight attendant to grab the yoke of a plane after a pilot has been killed? Once he learned she had been practicing with the ship's former helm officer (and had shown both skill and aptitude during the battle), he moved her into the post and an accelerated training program.
@@Potemkin1711 No, I wouldn't want a flight attendant to do that. But if it's a choice between a flight attendant and no one at the controls at all, then while the flight attendant may get everyone killed, the alternative is everyone will die *for sure!* In such a case, I'll take the flight attendant. Standard tactical theory: choose the option that has the greatest probability of succeeding. Or in other words, choose the lesser of two wrongs.
