  • How I made a home made wooden piano stand (with minimal skill :) and under $100 cdn for wood!

UPDATE 2022: My stand finally died - was my own fault though; I've been moving the shelf SO many times up and down (as I review/sell/buy different keyboards they need to be at various heights) I finally drilled one too many holes in the sides. I would follow the same build plan again but next time would make sure to factor in an adjustable shelving system of some sort. This is only for someone like me who is constantly adjusting it though . . .

Thanks! It did die after a couple years, but only because I do so many piano reviews and keep renting, selling and buying keyboards so I'd keep moving the shelf up and down which eventually wrecked the stand. If I ever make another one, it will have some adjustable shelving brackets built in.

Thanks so much! It's still holding strong today, even after moving the shelf height a couple of times (because I keep changing keyboards lol).

Thanks! And if he works with wood he'll do a much better job than I did :D

Thanks! It lasted me a couple years - but I bought a DGX-670 and it was too big for it. The table was ready to be retired anyways; after buying, selling and renting so many different keyboards I was constantly adjusting the shelf height which eventually resulted in just too many holes :)
If I made it again I would build in some type of adjustable shelf height system.

Hey, like your piano stand!! How far off the floor is the L brackets for the shelf that holds your keyboard? I know that keyboards are usually 28.5 inches off the floor to the top of the white keys and the thickness of keyboards are different but I just wanted a ballpark idea. I am going to build one for my Casio.

Hi there! When I first built it I had the brackets at 24" off the floor. That plus the 3/4" thickness of the shelf plus the 5.5" thickness of my first piano put the key height at 30 ish inches (I had read about ideal heights being anywhere from 28 to 30; in hindsight I think 28 is probably easier on the elbows). When I traded in my Alesis for a Roland that was 1/2" thicker, I lowered the shelf by an inch to compensate, and once again probably could have come down another half inch. So I would recommend taking 28 inches - your piano thickness - shelf thickness = bracket height. I'm actually thinking of yet another piano trade in, and was thinking about some type of adjustable shelf brackets so that I can stop mangling my stand every time I use a different piano.
Good luck with your build let me know how it goes!

@@PianoTone I thought about building one for my crappy keyboard, however I really need the height to be 28.5 in to the keys for playing classical music and its not possible for me to have leg room and the proper height unfortunately.

@@Joeydoesmedicine I just recently bought a new piano (Yamaha P-125) which I love but I really struggled to get the height correct and still have leg room - the P-125 is a great piano but it is insanely thick. I finally got it to a place where my legs do rub on the underside of the shelf and I'm at an OK height. What occurred to me to try (which I haven't done yet) is to cut maybe the first inch or so off the front of the shelf, maybe even with an angular cut to just give my legs that tiny extra bit of room. The piano is set back an inch or a tiny bit more on the shelf anyways.

@@PianoTone haha yeah a notch for your pedaling leg could work... I’ve concluded whenever I finally upgrade to a nice keyboard I’ll get one that’s got the build in stand that makes it look like an upright

That’s way too much money for materials. You could have bought one for the Alesia for less

I definitely spent too much on the stain, but the wood itself was about half the price of wooden stands like what Yamaha makes for their pianos, and is nicer because I got the hutch as well (the usual stands from manufacturers only have the piano shelf and that's it). I now have added a mounted mic arm to the hutch as well as a tablet holder which is awesome. Alesis doesn't make a stand for the Recital Pro; I think they do for their newer Prestige pianos though.
