Both the "fake" energy tanks and the missing grapple and xray icons are caused by the way the UI is drawn. When I was helping with a netplay hack for sm/smr/smz3, the missing icon issue came up. I traced the code that executed when the xray scope is acquired and found that - in addition to the normal process of adding the item - it altered the tilemap used for the UI, changing the tile IDs to point to the icon tiles. I ended up writing a simple routine to refresh the tilemap based on whether or not those items were in inventory and we added a call to that function in the routine that added items from remote players, which fixed the bug. Old Nintendo code is really fun to play with.
Eagerly awaiting a tutorial on how to perform the even more powerful Golden Chorizo Code. Provides all of the effects of the GT Code, in addition to a YT channel and extensive knowledge of how to break the game in other exciting ways!

I'm so glad you made this! Ever since I read about the GT code on TCRF I've been curious about how it interacted with item % at the end of the game and collected items in general. Super happy to have an answer finally.
I'm a relatively big fan of Super Metroid speedrunning and sequence breaking etc but this was news to me. I really appreciate when videos like this give me access to that world.
I just decided to give this a try real quick myself on the Nintendo Switch's SNES before Dread gets released in my area. And, I paused the video at about 5:06 at your suggestion so that I could try figuring it out myself. I had decided to go fight Draygon to get Space Jump... but I had skipped Grapple Beam. So, that was certainly... an experience. However, on one of my attempts, I somehow got Draygon to "red stomach" health without its swoops going to ludicrous speed like usual, and I was able to attack while still dodging them, and I finished the beast off on that attempt! (I had just 9 HP left when I won.) And then, since I had Space Jump, I had no trouble approaching the Golden Torizo room from the left, at which point I watched the rest of this video. I guess I'll spend some time later cleaning out the rest of Zebes to reach 135% on my game. I should be able to do it in well under 3 hours for the best ending too.
It's really funny that last night I was playing Super Metroid just to get in the zone before Metroid Dread comes out, and I saved right at the entrance of lower norfair. Then, youtube shows me this video today and I go "wow I can just go over there and try it out" it was really cool!
based on the explanation of recurring items and 84/16%, and knowing that there's a way to use the murder beam to reset the game to think you're at the beginning, I decided to look it up to see if 184% is a thing, and sure enough, it is.
@@gamesforyou2351 It would more than likely be 255% cause I don't think they'd use more than one byte to store the percentage when it was never expected to go past 100%. Going any higher would make it overflow back to 0. 0% run anyone?
Nice video! Only thing I think worth mentioning is that on the PAL version of the game it's theoretically possible to get to GT without power bombs, thereby allowing you to finish with 136% (actually FLJ beat me to that now that I've looked at the comments)
Hey, Ruya, thank you so much for watching and commenting! :) Yeah, I kept going back and forth on whether to mention that in my video.... Never heard of you or much of what I have seen from your videos. You earned a new subscription! 😁 I will probably try to confirm with you or ask how some things work later. (If you don't mind).
the reason you can get to 135% is more of how the vanilla game calculate %, it divide your max health by 100 for % and max ammo by 5 for % while the other items are a yes or no, also it is possible to get 136%, on NTSC its considered to be TAS only because you need multiple frame perfect freeze of the viola in the room to moonfall on them above the yellow door making the power bomb pack skipable, while in PAL if you are fast enough you don't need another freeze as samus fall faster, then you need to use grapple to get out of the floor redo a moonfall reuse graple and contine like that until you are stuck enough so the last moonfall make you past through the yellow door. then once you enter LN you still have to go to the right, but since the floor is power bombs you have to go up where mickey mouse missile is and use ice beam with one of the multi-viola to freeze at the right place, also only one of them work since only one of them move in a such a way that it can enter the shot block hole, so you have to guide it all the way up near the crumble block to freeze it at the right place then clip the crumble block bomb the bomb block above and try to get all the way up. then once that is done you need to recharge your enegery to max capacity as you need to do reverse pillar room with the acid rising up, so far nobody did it as how intense and hard it is, and since it is PAL there is a way to get gravity suit without power bombs also making the ordeal easier but still very hard. and BTW the WR for GT max% just got beaten by ruyarin by 6s about right at the moment i'm writing this :) otherwise good video outside of what i wrote which i think not a lot of peeps know hence why i wrote it, it was well explained and nothing more to add to it
Hey, FrenchLightningJohn! Hope all is well. :) Once again, thank you so much for commenting - you always share so much knowledge with us, and it's really appreciated. :) I was not aware that that's how the game calculates your final item collection percentage when it comes to energy... that helps to explain why 700 energy is interpreted as 7 E-tanks, even though you effectively only have 6 (plus 1 energy unit) after the GT Code. I did know about the 136% technicality, but I chose not to mention that, simply because if Zoast/Ruyarin/etc don't even go for 136%, then I doubt any mere mortal would. ;) In all seriousness, though, that is EXCEPTIONALLY difficult even on PAL, so I didn't think it'd be terribly relevant for my viewers. Why should the Chozo need a certain pick-up to activate to begin with?
IMO it is a leftover from a design phase where Samus would not be so constrained by the terrain/doors. (also suggested by the "hidden 3rd eye") Explicit item checks would have dictated the sequence.
Hahaha, Borti_Ovi! 😂 I would guess that Bruno Mailly is correct in stating that was a leftover from development. Given how the final game was laid out, it seems a bit "redundant" for the statue to not function unless you have Space Jump. But, who knows for sure...

Hey, Green Murci, great question! I'm really glad you brought this up. :) The resource I use for all of the room names is the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki: wiki.supermetroid.run/Main_Page. It has a separate page for basically every room in the game. The best part is that if you know the name of just 1 room (say, the "Landing Site", which is the room with Samus' ship), you can find the name of any other room. This is because, in the top right corner of each room's page, there is a list of all adjacent rooms with links to their pages, so you can basically travel through the entire game map and learn the name of any room you want. :)
Haha, that's part of it! But the reason it *originally* got that name is because a common speedrunning strat for that room involves crossing it while continuously moving and shooting. :) As seen here: th-cam.com/video/E1nutq9VArU/w-d-xo.html
Well, now I know why you prefer the golden Torizo over the bomb Torizo. One thing I noticed is that you usually skip saying "the" before items like "if you already have screw attack". Is it just me or does this sound a little strange?
Haha, yea, Golden Torizo is the man. Regarding my omission of "the", I can safely say that most people in the Super Metroid community at large would find it odd if I said "the" before things like "Screw Attack" or "Gravity Suit." For example, check out the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki page for the "Max% GT Code" category: wiki.supermetroid.run/Max%25_GT_Code. The pages on that site are written by true experts of the game, and they essentially never say "the" before major item names. :) Thanks for watching and commenting!!

So why do they call that Crateria/Brinstar transition fungal hall "the Terminator room"? Because you'll be back?
Haha, that's part of it! But the reason it *originally* got that name is because a common speedrunning strat for that room involves crossing it while continuously moving and shooting. :) As seen here: th-cam.com/video/E1nutq9VArU/w-d-xo.html
Ruya got WR yesterday, 1:07:43
It's hilarious that Ruya took the WR literally later in the same day that this video was uploaded. 😂 I updated my video description last night. :)
how people can find these information and trick in the game. I've never understood. is developper know that?
Well, now I know why you prefer the golden Torizo over the bomb Torizo. One thing I noticed is that you usually skip saying "the" before items like "if you already have screw attack". Is it just me or does this sound a little strange?
Haha, yea, Golden Torizo is the man. Regarding my omission of "the", I can safely say that most people in the Super Metroid community at large would find it odd if I said "the" before things like "Screw Attack" or "Gravity Suit."
For example, check out the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki page for the "Max% GT Code" category: wiki.supermetroid.run/Max%25_GT_Code. The pages on that site are written by true experts of the game, and they essentially never say "the" before major item names. :) Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Golden Chorizo xD
My man!
Hey, Dylan! :)
btw, ruyarin just got the GT max record :P
Hahaha, I figured that was gonna happen... and FrenchLightningJohn just mentioned that. :) I've updated the video description. :) Congrats, Ruyarin!!

edit:
7:55 WOAH! I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!
Hahaha, hey again, Calvin! Thank you. :) And yeah, isn't that interesting? Something you'd probably never learn about from casual gameplay, haha.
I remember the first time I tried beating Ridley before Draygon, that was the biggest roadblock aside from the lava dive room. Eventually I learned GGG and now I can easily beat Ridley before Draygon, though
Cool
Thanks, Sid the Squid! :)
