2 years ago, I switched from alto to tenor after hearing this recording. The blunt power and and therapeutic darkness of this can't be imitated on any other instrument.
Dexter Gordon + a standard ballad = magic. The huge gorgeous tone, the phrasing that manages to light up your brain with musical ideas & wit, while filling your heart with the feeling of romance, the sense that you are on a long journey of discovery while never losing sight of the underlying tune. What a master he was!
dexters tone back when he used the 10m was the best. Broad, dark, powerful, but at the same time elegant and rife with sophistication and color. He sounded great on the selmer too, but nothing beats his tone here.
thanx for teaching your style to a whole generation of saxophonists Dexter gordon is just agreat talent of a holly creativity of tones ,transitions and melodic flow of a continious amazing streams of musical phrases absolutely impressing
i feel so lucky that i have the opportunity to see this video recording. is like i was there ! Masterclass for all of us !!! thank u Dexter Gordon for what u left
I am so happy to have had him as friend and inspiration. We first met in Copenhagen and later when I moved to Paris he came theer to play at " Le Chat qui peche " and we had a good time together again. I miss him.
Brilliant! Yes, his 10M tone is the classic Dex sound. I love how he quotes Van Heusen's "Nancy ( with the Laughing Face)". In one of his early choruses.
Such beautiful music! Sonny and Dexter, to me, were just genius on this melody. more than 55 years has gone by and this is a textbook improvisation. May his soul rest in peace and I give him a big thank you for having shared to us all his musical gift in this dimension of existence.
Agreed! One question, are u referring to Sonny Rollins or Sonny stitt? Both incredible of course and both have incredible versions, I was just wondering if there was a specific recording u were referring to
Early Dex. He would go to the double time feel with alternating Db with Dnat of Coltrane but with greater subtlety, esp. with Tommy Flanagan on "The Panther."
Yes, we're aware of that, but Dexter's music lives on. The" 50 year" comment was referring to the music still going strong long after the time the video was produced. Enjoy!
OK I have to stop! Okay pause maybe.. Now great things happen on my birthday in this case 3:19 to 3:29. 😌. I know somebody else had to catch that phrase.
Better late than never. What's an even bigger shame is that most blacks are growing up never hearing of Dexter. Goddamn Hollywood music industry ruins everything.
Actually if it weren't for white America there we be no Dexter Gordon as we know him. Four white guys wrote this tune, a white guy invented the tenor saxophone, white guys were the sound engineers who worked tirelessly to capture his essence. White guys signed him to record deals and supported his career. White people all over paid good money to see/hear Dexter, thus supporting his career. White guys cast him as the lead in a mainstream movie. He even married an American white person. Don't worry too much about "white" people. We're in your corner more than you know it!
I feel so blessed that This great artist made Copenhagen and Denmark his home in the sixties, and I know any Danish jazzlover would say the same!
No one plays Body and Soul like Dexter Gordon... He was smooth as silk...
I always liked Dexter Gordon's style of playing. So crisp and clear, bold and confident, and with this incredible feeling for the music.
Don't give a crap what anyone has to say...DG is the BEST Tenor of them ALL!!!! MAGNIFICO!!!
spr95que yes
God touched this man every time he lifted his tenor to his lips.
Yes I hope so!
Full of booz and dope and god touched him?

Wow!
Well put!
Interesting thought, but listen to Stitt on alto and you have to play both! 😁💥
Just beautiful 🤩 so glad I came across this video.

Straight up boss on the tenor here, the way he colors them chords is just outstanding

100% agree
Thats was an amazing assessment of Mr. Gordon style....
Even better in the mid 1940s with his 30M and Otto Link Tonemaster. It was a little darker but every bit as rich.
One of the main reasons I play a 10m
10m? whatisit?
The one, the only, and still goin' strong 50 years later, Mr. Dexter Gordon!!!!!

he is my biggest influence on tenor. his sound to me is like something belligerent, laid back, rude, beautiful, and sexy
Super cool 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

DEXTER ONE OF THE GREATS..!!!!
The phrase at 3:19 is probably one of the greatest musical phrases I’ve ever heard
He's literally the coolest

Dexter: The Master of quotations! 5:55
Joseph P Cannavo
Sublime!
Richly satisfying as always from Dexter Gordon, in company with a fine trio. Lovely high quality recording as well to enhance these fine performances.

BODY AND SOUL
love it...
Dexter Gordon foi e será sempre um artista completo, músico de tenor sax e fez cinema, interpretando "Pres" , onde esteve genial.
This is great!
extremely good video Julio Cortázar. I shattered that thumbs up on your video. Keep up the quality work.
Superbe Prestation ! Thank you so much my Friends !

Where oh where can I find this rendition of Body and Soul?
just here
It's from the Jazz Icons video series.
it’s only on dvd (live 63 - 64 of jazz icons) I used vlc to extract the audio from it ^^
👏🏾👏🏾
Did he play "Nancy with a laughing face" at 02:32 - 03:04 ?? :D
❤
anyone know where I can get a transcription of this?
love his lazy expressive tone and phrasing
❤ 1:01 3:18
1:55 , DG crushes the modulation
The Absolute is in there , such as.... indescriptible
all time GREAT, it's a shame he had to leave AMERICA to be appreciated. Jazz giant.
Fuck benny fakeman, anyway, and the fucking shiti land band
why is the bassist standing atop a contrabass marimba?
Maybe like the conga players, to make the low notes more resonant. Would be an extension to the lower frequencies.
Wow! That is Amazing Tone.. It's a shame I grew up in white America and never heard of Dexter G.

Long Tall Dex baby❤
A little mellow a little spice add a little cool and a bit of Saul pour in a tall glass and you have Dexter Gordon
I'm sorry to break this to you, but Mr Gordon died in 1990.
Sorry.
やっぱりテナーが良い曲です。🙄
Them white guys play real good.
Illegal.....just illegal.
LEFT HANDED DRUMMER ahh
