Forget the horn. It's the person that makes the instrument. And the person is gone forever. And that's what makes it so beautiful, this mortality of the individual, but the music lives forever in others. And that is what makes it last forever.
Dexter IS one of the Jazz Immortals. This video exemplifies why, it's either that simple or it's not. The terrible shame is that not all of us know this, I would love for the future generations to be taught this however..... rather than hate, prejudice, and war.
There was simply no one better at handling a top-shelf ballad like this than the late, great Dexter Gordon: the peerless sauvity & taste; the seemingly-endless reserves of musical invention; and of course the huge ravishing lyrical tone. His cadenzas alone are like a master class in Jazz phrasing. Simply superb!
just been "re-watching" "Round Midnight" and marvelling at this man's beautiful rendering of this lovely piece about a love affair coming to an end. Dexter played it like he was singing and feeling the lyrics-masterful!
"You've Changed" is one of my favorite of Dexter's recorded ballad performances. Thanks Julio for posting this live version. It's beautiful to hear the subtle differences in this recorded version vs. the Blue Note recording I'm familiar with. Long live LTD!
With a glorious intent, Dexter used to examine, dissect, investigate, consider, embrace, reconstruct, reshape, adorn, remodel any song, any sculptured phrase, giving us a friendly but professionally detached insight into a way of thinking, feeling.
Wonderfull ! Thanks a lot to clubedaserpente to share all these video's of Super Dex 1963, 1964. I assisted at the Amsterdam Paradiso concert of Dex with the dutch pianist Cees Slinger: a marvellous evening !! There is a CD of that concert. Clubedaserpente, can you please indicate the locations in Holland, Belgium and Swiss ?
Might be one of my favorite Dexter ballads of all time. Although his ability to play behind the beat is making it an absolute nightmare for me to transcribe!
I’m not sure which saxophone he sounds better on, the Conn or the Selmer? I guess it doesn’t really matter as he could make anything sound great! One of the true virtuosos of the tenor sax👌

@@captlarry-3525 Gee Larry.. It's a ballad, it's called supporting the soloist tastefully. not a pissing contest. go listen to some heavy metal solos if you want lots of notes that don't mean a thing
Kenny drew doing a great job showing us he'd rather be someplace else.. clank bang.. .I'd like to give him a hammer, let him tenderize some meat.. was it art taylor some body once told.. "quit fucking around".. which caused him to study.? Great players.. not playing greatly.

Gordon exhales humanity with every note he blows. Glorious, simply glorious.
The early 60's were Dexter's best years, such beautiful improvising. Drew and Taylor are also exceptional musicians.
Absolutely amassing... Dexter's sound is unmistakable....luv it...
A monumental figure in the great genre of jazz Dexter Gordon’s music transfer’s you to a better time and place.

John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins = The Three (Real) Tenors
Dex is the poet of the tenor sax.A true and brilliant saxophinist.
If they are the three real tenors, what does that make Hawkins, Young and Webster?
Mark Schultz FACTS
THERE WERE MANY OTHER GREAT 👍🏽 TENOR SAX 🎷 PLAYERS.
