  • This small passage at Madison Blue Spring is on many cave divers' bucket list but it is so narrow that only one team is allowed at a time; but before we dive into that footage, we answer the very popular subscriber question: "If losing the guideline is so dangerous, why don't you tether yourself to it?"

    A good analogy would be people who work on extremely high antenna installations. They free climb the whole thing, more or less - only clipping onto something when stopped to work or rest, etc. - because the constant unclipping and clipping onto the structure, especially with their tools hanging off them, is WAY more dangerous. It really makes sense when you imagine going through the process in some detail.

    What about cave line that has fiber "dots" woven in that are like a sensor and there would be a device that is worn on the wrist that acts as a map for the "lit" line. If you lose the line you just look at your wrist and it shows you where the line is and also the picture on the wrist could expand or zoom out to show where the line goes as well. Kind of like a gps but with the line. Eventually we could have it be totally lineless maybe and only use a multitude of tracking dots to map with. Although, we are a ways off from the security of tangible line.

    Would you eventually be interested in reacting to some mountaineering disasters /stories like the K2 disaster from 2008 or Everest disaster from 1996?
    I know it sounds weird because this is a dive channel but if you look deeper into it you realise the causes of deaths and the reasons are very similar to diving.
    Lack of oxygen (altitude sickness) has basically the same effectas nitrogen narcosis and your discision making.

    Time is a important factor to not run out of oxygen..

    So i am not a diver, but from my understanding cave diving is basically a xonstant repetition of several tasks all at the same time (check o2 and co2 ratio, lay the line, swim, reorient yourself according to the diveplan, etc. etc.). So using a tether to me seems like a good way of complicate a complicated procedure even more than it already is.

    Bells.
    The thing that would make the line better is bells.
    Let me explain, bell can be made to ring at a given frequency, sound travel well inside water, so we make those tiny water proof bells and make so the resonate at given frequencies.
    There, you got yourself a line that can be found in a more easy way, especially if you bring something like a sonar.

    That footage from the Rocky Horror tunnel is a lot like what I would imagine a turd would see if they had eyes. Total colonoscopy vibes. You got a "turds-eye view"!

    I once had someone ask me about parachuting into the water with scuba gear and then diving. I made one important point. Those with rock climbing also are opposite sports as far as safety is concerned. (I've done all three sports) rock climbing and parachuting you dont want any gear fasteners to come loose. In scuba, you want everything to come loose easily hence bolt snaps. Self clipping carabiners with difficult release is a bad deal in scuba. My LP85 doubles (93cuft with the plus) are bigger than hp100s. Silly heavy too.

    Tethering to the guide line has a major pro, and a major con. Pro: "If" someone were to run out of air and die, you could easily find them. Con: Line could break in a number of different scenarios which would be disasterous to everyone.

    You could practice signals like tapping or dragging your one or two fingers signifying how many divers and which direction they were heading on the other divers forearm,
    out is elbow to wrist in is wrist to elbow then if you want both divers to figure out their tethers you grab at their elbow and then grab at their wrist and it only means identify your tether placement

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIVETALK understandable, just a thought however you two have the expertise and I am not very knowledgeable on the subject besides learning through your videos.
      I appreciate you replying to my comment, you two provide a great outlet as well as community for divers and non divers alike to understand and or troubleshoot serious and dangerous situations while also providing your own personal experiences and self critiques to be able to steer any part of the open water diving/cave diving community in the best direction to avoid putting themselves or others in life threatening situations and I look forward to every upload keep up the good work

    You see you said it for me Gus, if you had to bail out at that point, it would suck? See my brain says, then don't put yourself in the position where that could happen my man.
    I did a sky dive once, that shit sucked all the way down, I didn't balf or pass out but when I got back down I knew sure as shit wasn't doing that again, there comes a point you have to ask yourself is it worth it.
    Not to try and deflate your fun though, I love watching you all risk your lives, these caves are cool as, and I do think I get the fun in it.

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. But I guess it just makes it even more obvious perhaps and is an added reminder for the team to take that action of being sure they moved the clip off the “inn” label? Might as well put that clip on something that says “out” rather then clip it to nothing.

      @DIVETALK I'm curious about a few things. The arch at the blue hole, why can't a scuba diver be in there just for guidance/steering? I understand they can't keep up.
      Also, during the competitions why not have a safety diver on gas every few meters? Or those bells that hold air pockets.
      If you're holding you're breath, an several meters down, could u abort and catch an air pocket safely?
      Thanks guys.
